Service Above Self:

rotary’s motto in action This year’s Saratoga Home & Lifestyle Show marks the 42nd anniversary of this important fundraiser. Since1973, the Show has made possible the significant financial gifts of the Rotary Club as well as strengthening the community spirit of Saratoga. The Rotary Club expects to raise close to $100,000 from this year’s event, with proceeds to be distributed amongst community organizations, youth scholarships, and international humanitarian projects.

International Relief Efforts

Part of Rotary’s mission is donating to world disaster recovery efforts and improving life for citizens in developing countries. The Club has sent Shelter Boxes for war refugees in Syria and typhoon victims in the Philippines, funded well construction in Rwanda, and supported Pure Water for the World.

Retirement Resolutions for 2015

he first month of the year is a great time to stop and take stock of your life and your goals. By and large, the most common New Year’s resolutions involve money and health.

But just when the coldest part of the winter makes exercise less convenient and comfort food harder to ignore, the arrival of tax documents and year-end statements make this a natural time

By John Conroe, CFP®, AFIM Financial Planner and Investment Officer The Adirondack Trust Company

to review your retirement planning. Dreaming of golden years spent on sun-soaked beaches is also a great incentive to freshen up your personal escape plan and maximize your chances of a worry-free retirement when the winter winds blow.

H e r e a r e f o u r r e s o l u t i o n s t h at a n y o n e c a n m e e t :

1

Assess your current retirement readiness

One of the primary steps in financial planning is gathering information and analyzing the situation as it stands today. As tax documents—year-end credit-card and asset account statements—flow in, keep a running tally. Fill out a balance sheet, adding up all your assets and subtracting your debts. Utilize a robust online retirement calculator like the Adirondack Trust’s Retirement Calculator (log on to www.atc.com, click “Planning & Investments” in the left-hand menu bar, then “Retirement Planning”). Be as accurate as you can in projecting your retirement expenses, or, barring that, use at least 75% of your current pre-tax income. Don’t be afraid of the results; instead, embrace them, taking satisfaction in knowing that you have already taken the first step by assessing where you stand.

3

Review asset allocation

At The Adirondack Trust Company, we spend time with our clients to figure out their goals, needs, tolerance for risk and time horizon. This information helps us arrive at an investment objective and brings asset allocation into focus: How much to commit to stocks or bonds and what level of ready cash is required. Once we know this information, we can build or rebalance a portfolio. This is a great time of year to consider your retirement portfolio and change your allocation.

saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com

2

Find more money to save

If you’re able to meet your bills and cover expenses, you can probably find a few dollars here or there to direct toward your future retirement. If you expect a tax refund or year-end bonus, allocate part or all to your plan.

Taking a hard look at your expenses will likely find a few more dollars:

— Round up every purchase amount in your register and sweep the excess into your IRA. — Brown bag your daily lunches and increase your IRA/401(k) contribution by the amount you don’t spend. — Figure your weekly gas savings from lower oil prices and put it away. — Refinance your mortgage at today’s ultra-low rates and save the savings. — Re-shop your insurances and bank the difference. — Renegotiate your cable and cellular plans and invest whatever you can wrestle back. The more you use automation, the less you’ll miss the money. Every dollar you save this year will have time to grow and provide for you down the road.

4

Meet with a Financial Planner

Eliminate the hard work and have a professional review your finances. This is the teamwork approach to meeting your retirement goals. You can find planners who will charge you flat fees, hourly rates or waive fees if you move some assets to them for professional management. Sometimes, it’s best to get an outside view of your situation. We do it with doctors for health issues, mechanics for automotive concerns, lawyers for legal problems and accountants for taxes. Why not put a professional financial planner on your team as well? Resolutions are great if you actually achieve all or even part of them, but they can be a source of guilt and worry if you fail, and they usually represent a real need. This year, resolve to stack the odds in your favor, for 2015 and for the rest of your life. Saratoga Home & Lifestyle 2015  |  23

Concord Photo by Paul Castle Pools does a lot more than install amazing pools. An integrated design approach incorporates custom water features, landscaped slides, custom stairs and benches around deluxe outdoor kitchens, fireplaces, and outdoor living rooms to create your own unique personal backyard oasis. Behind the fantasy is the strength of an innovative and award-winning company. Concord Pools was the first to pioneer the use of radiant heat in swimming pools. A radiant heating system utilizes a modulating boiler and PEX tubing in the concrete floor of the pool. The result is an incredibly efficient source of heat for a swimming pool. iltered through the misty sunlight, the colors are hazy and muted, as if seen through a memory.

Nostalgia is a strong motivator, and this year’s furniture trends are reflecting that. Rich in history and style, well-made and classically-designed, the pieces evoke a delightful sense of discovery, hinting at a graceful displacement of time and space. The silver of an industrial-style metal table glistens in the palette of monochromatic neutrals filling the showrooms at DiSiena Furniture this season. Lustrous upholstered grey fabrics matched with weathered and distressed wood are contrasted against the intrinsic beauty of deep charcoals and decadent chocolate browns. The look and durability of leather is continuing to keep it at the top of the list in furniture covering choices, said DiSiena’s owner Carol Zappone.

Greens, as if dusted by nature’s dew, crisp blues the color of water and a touch of berry tones, like a small treasure hidden in the forest, are in this year’s decorating forecast. Warmed with pinks from champagne-colored to clay or sepia tones… natural meets urban as functionality is served up with style. From rustic elegance to metropolitan casual, DiSiena has been furnishing the region for more than half a century. DiSiena Furniture started in 1947 in the family’s garage and grew bit by bit; first taking over the garden area and then expanding to the point where it is today; with an enormous selection spread across 85,000 square feet, and through three buildings. g

Though their New Visions showrooms are new to the public, Capitol District Supply has had kitchen and bath showrooms since its founding in 1945. Hyman Zima was a World War II Purple Heart veteran who made the Capital Region his home after the war. “Grandpa’s legacy taught an amazing work ethic. He would drive down to New York City almost nightly and find material that contractors and

homeowners needed back in the Capital region,” says Hana Sullenger, Marketing Manager. As one of the first industry suppliers to have retail-friendly showrooms, today they are reimagining the showroom experience with New Visions Kitchens and Baths. New kitchens and bath displays were added and updated in both the Saratoga Springs and Schenectady locations in 2013 & 2014. With certified kitchen and bath designers using 2020 CAD design software on-site, customers are ensured a technologically advanced and trendy new kitchen or bath. Constantly competing with big box home supply stores, Sullenger knows that customers want to buy from local experts especially when it comes to peoples biggest assets, their homes. “We say “Don’t be Big Boxed!” Come to a place where we won’t create an unrealistic flyer price to only sticker shock you when you are ready to buy. Seams can be distracting, obscuring the natural beauty of the wood. In contrast, the wide, solid Heritage Wide Plank Flooring boards greatly simplify the design, allowing the exceptional magnificence of the wood to stand out. The enduring beauty and distinctive characteristics exhibited by wide plank flooring can enhance the warm ambiance of any room. Heritage Wide Plank Flooring was recently used in an unexpected way to complete an elegant look. American White Oak sliced from logs when it is milled in a “French Cut” style gives it an antique appearance. This French Cut Oak was used on a feature wall over the fireplace, nicely complimenting the flooring. “We think beyond the floors when recommending and specifying our Heritage Wide Plank Flooring. The possibilities are endless,” said Bullis. g

As new mechanical refrigerators were introduced, Feiden responded to the growing interest from his customers to repair and sell more appliances. He transformed the family garage into a showroom for the new electric appliances and radios that were emerging onto the market. In 1947, Earl B. Feiden Appliance opened in Latham Circle. The family farm and family business still stand strong today. The expertise that one gains by staying in business so long not only affords Earl B. Feiden Appliance the tremendous knowledge and ability to help everyone find the appliances they’re looking for, but also the insight that helping the community extends beyond the showroom floor. The projects most special to the family of Earl B. Feiden Appliance companies aren’t always remodeling or appliance related. The good fortune that comes along with being a successful business is the ability to support many local and national charities. Earl B. Feiden Appliance has donated refrigerators and ranges to Schoharie County flood relief efforts and supported the Children’s Hospital at Albany Medical Center and Protecting the Paws in Blue, an organization that provides bullet and stab proof vests for law enforcement dogs. g

scaping into the joy of a beautiful garden can be as simple as opening the door and taking a step outside.

It was a love of plants, and specifically flowers that led Rich Morris to take up flower arranging. He began Toadflax Nursery more than 25 years ago, as an outlet for his creativity. It evolved into providing plants and providing maintenance of these plants for clients, as well. As the years went on, Morris noticed a void in the marketplace for total landscape design-build solutions. “People needed help in creating a backyard oasis and we were just the right people to get the job done. We knew the ins and outs of creative landscape design and how to make a uniquely beautiful setting,” said Morris.

Along with the nursery, Toadflax is an award-winning landscape design and build firm with a professional design team and experienced construction, landscape and maintenance crews.

Today, Toadflax Nursery is a successful nursery and garden center with 11 greenhouses and acres of land that hold a vast assortment of top quality plant material, hard goods and natural stone products.

The landscape design and build team identifies landscaping as an extension of the architecture. Toadflax uses these insights to create beautiful and functional outdoor living spaces for their many clients throughout the area.

Toadflax also has an aquatic plant production business that provides subaquatic vegetation to restore the plant life in postdredging environments.

Taking on each project with the belief that it should be a genuinely unique landscape masterpiece, the Toadflax team strives to create beautiful functional landscapes. “Each new project is unique in its own way. This is the best part about the business we are in. We get to continually create new and attractive spaces. Each site holds different opportunities than the next. We are constantly coming up with new, innovative ways to overcome various issues and turn a problem into a possibility,” said Morris. Whether it’s a stone wall that also holds up a garden bed or a stone patio that acts as a water retention area, Toadflax personalizes each landscape feature to the client’s needs and desires. Outdoor living spaces that feel as comfortable and inviting as the rooms in the home are possible. Through the use of the right materials added with the use of a well-designed plan, your landscape can be a one-of-a-kind backyard oasis that you will enjoy for many years to come. g

here’s no way around it. Who you are becomes a part of what you make. The Amish people have a tradition of service. A community strengthened by humility and a deep respect for others, they work together for the benefit of all.

“They try hard to please and you can see that in the work they do,” said Chris Carte, President and owner of The Wood Carte. Working with Amish builders from New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio, The Wood Carte has the largest collection of Amish-made wood furniture in upstate NY. The wisdom and unparalleled workmanship that goes into Amish furniture results in a better quality product with a longer lifespan than what can be imitated by mass production manufacturers focused on speed and profit.

In addition to the reclaimed wood and Amish-made furniture, The Wood Carte’s huge selection includes styles from the rustic to the refined for the kitchen and dining room, living room, bedroom, home entertainment area and home office. Unique American-made home accessories and gift items are offered, as well. When it is indoors, the benefits of real wood are extraordinary, but for the outdoors, Carte advocates Polywood furniture. Over time, wood furniture that is exposed to the elements can degrade, but durable, solid and long-lasting polywood gives you the classic look of wood without any of the maintenance. Made from 100 percent recycled bottles, Polywood furniture requires no waterproofing, painting or sealing. It is easy to wash; quick to dry and it won’t crack, mildew or rot.

“It’s a combination of excellent quality at a fair price, and that’s hard to beat,” said Carte. Their full line of furniture made by another group with similar values, the Mennonite craftsmen, includes one of the store’s best-sellers; a reclaimed wood farmhouse table with heavy legs and a thick top. A good reuse of materials, reclaimed wood is gathered from barns that are dismantled and then converted into furniture. “You can’t duplicate what we see in the reclaimed barn wood,” explains Carte. “It’s the beauty of it – every piece is unique. It has lots of character. It’s not something that can be replicated through manmade procedures.” 62  |  Saratoga Home & Lifestyle 2015

New to the store this spring will be the “Presidential-style” polywood rocking chair. Developed from customer requests, Carte worked with an Amish builder to provide it exclusively to The Wood Carte. “I’m pretty excited. It should be a nice addition to a lot of people’s homes,” he said. g saratogaTODAYnewspaper.com
