Forget the Rules Laura Mullen, Owner of Lily Saratoga

WRITTEN BY MEGIN POTTER PHOTOS BY SUSAN BLACKBURN PHOTOGRAPHY

ou are not a piece of fruit. Forget trying to classify your figure as a pear, apple or more of a butternut squash. Everybody feels beautiful – and any body looks bodacious – when wearing a fantastically fitting dress.

“Wedding dresses fit differently than anything you’ve ever worn before, ”said Laura Mullen, owner of Lily Saratoga.

Open Yourself up to ALL the Options Bridal boutiques are bristling with emotion. Under the bright lights, you’re on a pedestal, seeing

yourself in the full-length mirrors while others openly evaluate how you look. Adding to the stress, confusion and doubt you may already be feeling, you’re surrounded by a bounty of beautiful dresses, trying to remember the shapes, features, embellishments and designers you studied and researched beforehand. “It’s really hard to do the work before you’ve tried on the dresses,” said Mullen. A bride may have dreamed of wearing a ball gown but after trying on a fit-and-flare style finds she’s fallen in love with the look instead. “Brides are often pleasantly surprised by what they like on their body, so I always tell them to keep a little bit of an open mind.”

The Gift of Time

four-to-six months for a dress to be delivered. Designers do offer rush options and Lily Saratoga can provide a list of trusted seamstresses to complete the fitting alterations.

Often, the wedding dress sets the tone for your wedding, so give yourself time to get it right. At Lily Saratoga, there are more than 200 dresses to try-on in all different styles and ranging to size 28. A sample sale room containing a collection of 60 dresses will also be opening mid-winter 2019.

Go Bare Under There

The Lily Saratoga Consultants aim to make each 1 1/2 hour-long appointment enjoyable and fun for each bride. Some brides don’t decide on a dress during the first appointment and come to revisit the same dresses at a later date; others change gears completely and gain clarity in the contrast after multiple appointments. Scheduling your first appointment nine months to a year before your wedding is prudent because it often takes

If you have a nicely fitting strapless bra to wear while you try on dresses, feel free to do so, but it’s not really necessary, said Mullen. The defined structure, boning and padding of many of the dresses makes it feel perfectly natural to try things on - without upper body undergarments. “Your wedding gown is an extension of yourself. It is designed to make you feel like the most beautiful version of yourself.”

GROWING MEMORIES ON LIBERTY RIDGE FARM WRITTEN BY MEGIN POTTER PHOTOS PROVIDED

Robert and I have been married for 35 years and working together 24 hours a day, seven days a week since we opened our gates to the public 20 years ago,” said Cynthia Gifford, owner of Liberty Ridge Farm. “I’ve had couples who had come here on school field trips and are now coming back to get married! Some had their first date here or their engagement, some found us online and have come sight unseen,” said Gifford. In 2002, they built the Gifford Barn and began hosting wedding ceremonies and receptions. By August 2019, their farm market renovations will turn it into an ideal indoor ceremony space.

TENDING TO YOU “We do something unique for every couple. We add those extra touches to enhance the whole experience,” said Gifford. The handicap accessible parking lot and barn is serviced by several golf carts and a trolley to shuttle guests. The outdoor ceremony area, positioned on the banks of the Hoosic River, has a white birch arbor and wooden bench seating. “Photographers are just thrilled with the photo opportunities here on the farm,” said Gifford.

HARVESTING HAPPINESS Little girls visiting the farm are enchanted when they catch a glimpse of a bride. Open year-round, the Gifford barn accommodates 150 guests, has a large granite fireplace, 15’ ceilings and radiant heat hardwood floors. Dessert stations are set-up on the barn’s wrap-around deck. Chef Shaun Skaarup serves up a selection of catering options that include the farm’s own smoked meats. “Its good comfort food that can accommodate a variety of dietary restrictions and makes you feel you’re at home here on the farm,” said Gifford. Their event tent fits 200 people, a dance floor and catering cooking station. Indoor restrooms, outdoor fires, fireworks and so much more ensures your night is just right. “When you find a venue that hits your heart, you’ll know it,” said Gifford.
