A Publisher’s Tale… Once upon a time in upstate New York...

Chadwick Michael Beatty Owner/Publisher That ends our fairy tale…

and begins the story of a young start-up company’s roller coaster ride to success. For those of you who don’t know the history of Saratoga TODAY, the company was formed in January of 2006 with the first edition hitting the street three months later on April 5. We originally began as a 3 day per week publication, printing 6,000 copies every Monday, Wednesday & Friday. The idea seemed prudent and fiscally sound. I couldn’t have been more wrong! The first stumbling block was our frequency. No one seemed able to figure out what days the paper printed. Readers would wonder “Is this the latest edition or the edition from 2 days prior?”

there lived a beautiful little resort community nestled in the foothills of the Adirondacks. It was a magical place where memories were made and dreams came true. Although the community was already a world-class destination, the residents who lived there didn’t have a locally owned and operated community newspaper. They were dark days…What were the people to do? Well, In January 2006 a young Publisher rode a bright white stallion into town flanked by drummers and trumpeters and he announced “TODAY is the DAY when you will have a newspaper to call your own, and I will call it Saratoga TODAY!”

The second stumbling block came in the form of advertisers. The process of acquiring advertisers (the life’s blood of a newspaper) turned out to be significantly more difficult than anticipated. The decision of where to invest their limited advertising dollars is a big decision for local businesses, and we hadn’t yet given them a great reason to invest in us. While readership slowly grew during those first few months, and advertisers were slowly coming on board, it was evident that our formula was not working. By the end of August we had lost approximately $100,000 and the hemorrhaging showed no signs of slowing. I can still VIVIDLY remember sleepless nights filled with fear and anxiety.

I’d like to personally thank our wonderful photographers for giving us these great photos to choose from... Francesco D’Amioco, Mark Bolles and Tom Stock

Saratoga TODAY 10 Year Anniversary Our First Paper.. 4/5/06 It was time to buckle down and get to work...

Tough decisions needed to be made if Saratoga TODAY was to survive. Over the course of a few months I trimmed the staff, reduced salaries, doubled down on our loans and eliminated two days of distribution. If the company was going to die, we would die fighting to the last breath rather than running for our lives. But failure was not an option and a small group of passionate individuals accomplished the unlikely. By the end of 2006 we had curtailed the losses and built strong relationships in the community. The New Year began a new chapter for Saratoga TODAY. Distribution was quickly growing and we were partnering with local non-profits. Advertisers were also beginning to invest their hard earned money in our newspaper.

It was time to tap the experience and wisdom of people with far more experience than me....

I turned to Tony Robbins, Mark Cuban and Jack Welch… • “Identify your problems but give your energy to solutions.” - Tony Robbins • “Make your product easier to buy than your competition, or you will find your customers buying from them, not you.” - Mark Cuban • “Willingness to change is a strength, even if it means plunging part of the company into total confusion for a while.” - Jack Welch

Things were looking good. Little did I know that the country would face an economic meltdown in 2008; The worst financial crisis since the Great Depression. The coming years would challenge our commitment and tear at our very fabric. But we remembered the old boxer’s adage: Get knocked down 3 times, stand up 4 times. We stuck to our core mission, a mission which remains the same today as it was a decade ago: • Produce vibrant and dynamic local community products, focusing 100% on local news, people, and entertainment. • Get those products in the hands of as many readers as possible. • Deliver results to our advertisers. The following years sailed by with hundreds of little steps and a few significant ones. During this time we increased our weekly distribution, added new product lines, bought into

complimentary media, created local events and doubled down on our commitment to the regional nonprofits. The relationships we built and the memories we made will last a lifetime. Whether it is the look on the kids faces when we burst into a classroom to announce the ‘Teacher of the Year’, or veterans walking out of the Navy SEAL seminar thanking us for our support of the military, I am proud of the work we have done. Now, as we begin our 10th year, I am happy to announce that we are stronger than ever. The weekly distribution of Saratoga TODAY is more than 10,000 copies and growing; our magazine division just won three awards from the New York Press Association; and our regional events continue to draw people from throughout the tri-state area. I want to thank my uber-dedicated staff that has made this journey successful. I’ve been blessed to find people who are skilled in the areas where I am weak, and they have helped me to execute my mission. And I certainly want to thank YOU… our loyal readers and advertisers. You are the reason we do this every week. You let us know when we are doing a good job, and you keep us on our toes when we mess up. God Bless, stay motivated and achieve your dreams.

Chad Beatty On the following pages you will be able to see an illustrated timeline focusing on some of the more noteworthy milestones in our history. You will also notice a LOT of advertisers who would like to participate in the celebration of our milestone- Thank you! 10% off all revenue in this section will be donated to the Franklin Community Center.
