Elle Décor: Women in Design: Magazine Celebrates 20 Years

Elle Décor magazine hosted the event, “Women in Design,” to celebrate its 20year-anniversary. The magazine’s editor, Margaret Russell, lead the panel of Holly Hunt, Kelly Wearstler, Annabelle Seldorf, Bunny Williams, Charlotte Moss, and fashion designer Cynthia Rowley. Rowley talked about her move from an all-white loft apartment (pre-children) to a townhouse with hardwood floors (post-children) and the tendency for elements of her collection to make their way into her home decor. The event included Elle “It was amazingly inspiring and Decor's first annual award for the panel discussion format outstanding achievement in made it a fun and interesting design, called the Vision discussion. Kelly Wearstler’s Latest: Hue What makes Wearstler so fantastic is the sense-of-humor found in her designs. Just when you think they are too much, she throws a little wink to make you absolutely love it. Like her previous books, we love the images that include her and her two sons lounging around antiques and playing on $20,000 rugs. The no-fear attitude around these gorgeous objects and opulent spaces makes her our modern-day Dorothy Draper. We are addicted! not sure what we like better, the sofa or her

Au Revoir

Metropolitan Home ...Another one bites the dust... It’s official. After 35 years of publication, Metropolitan Home will cease publication with its December issue, making it the latest home decor magazine to succumb to the industry's advertising slump. The magazine, owned by Hachette Filipacchi Media U.S., had a circulation of a little more than 560,000 at last count. Hachette said it will put its resources into Elle Decor, the luxury design magazine run by Margaret Russell. Only six national shelter mags remain! What are they doing right?

Esquire Goes Digital Esquire has launched its first interactive print media experience through its latest issue. After downloading the software from the mag’s website, hold the issue up to the computer and watch videos from stories in the issue. How sweet is that? One of our design crushes, Brad Ford, is keen on the idea for interior designers. “Imagine a shelter magazine being able to link a story to an actual tour of a space given by the interior designer who created it. Something to think about. Perhaps HGTV and Elle Décor should start talking….” We totally agree! http://www.designtherapy.com/

Crew's Creative Director, Jenna Lyons, and her little boy, Becket. It was featured in the December, 2008 issue of Domino Magazine and still looks cutting edge. The striped ceiling combined with the fur rugs and modern mobile, makes the room suitable for even a teenager. Love it!

Mini Jake has lots of great, selective products that represent a modern and functional approach to play and parenting, including the Bloom Fresco High Chair, the Cadillac of high chairs. There are safe and educational toys that the kids will love, and there is sophisticated yet playful nursery and playroom furniture that you'll appreciate. Their quality merchandise is meant to provide fun and comfort for all stages of childhood. They also have baby registries for those living out-of-town! https://www.minijake.com/

Our friends at ohdeeoh.com, one of the sister sites to Apartment Therapy, suggests using simple metal brackets and wire from IKEA to display the color masterpieces from your little Picasso. Here’s what they had to say: “In this photo, it's a child's artwork that really takes center stage on the white wall next to the white kitchen. (We also love this display idea for rotating artwork!) Though it may seem stark at first, a white backdrop can make even children's toys into little works of art in a museum and make your home appear less cluttered if done the right way.” Could also be a great way to display family photos!

Working at HGTV is my dream job. HG has been my favorite network since I was 15 years old. Which turned me into a bit of a Design Junkie… A huge part of developing shows for our network has to do with meeting the people who rock the Design World. To me, these people are total Stars. Last week, I had the pleasure of meeting the Design World’s version of Brad and Angelina. Christiane and Josh, founders of DwellStudio, came in for a chat. They are sweet, funny, smart and charismatic. They exude effortless chic, truly living the dwell lifestyle. Miraculously, they are also totally relatable and down to earth. & 10 Questions: Christiane Lemieux, DwellStudio

What instance in your life plays the biggest role in your design aesthetic? That instance was probably getting married and having kids – when you get married you have to compromise and accept at least a little of his stuff…and then you have to figure out how to make it work with yours. When you have kids – you have to put all your favorite things away so they don’t get broken and then figure out what to do with what is left. When you don’t have to make the compromises of family life you can have mohair velvet upholstered walls…(sigh)

When did you realize you wanted to be a designer?

6

I have always loved sketching, drawing, painting decorating and re-decorating. I redesigned my parent’s master bath at 13 (think lots of glass brick- yikes!). When I found out that could be your profession – I was sold. I had to beg, borrow and steal to get to Parson’s School of Design.

school!

What was your first Design Job? Fabric assistant at Isaac Mizrahi – 1997 – during the Unzipped era – fabric meant gorgeous jacquards and silks from Italy and had beaded wools from France. This is where I fell in love with textiles. I had no idea until then that they could be so luxe.

& 10 Questions: Christiane Lemieux, DwellStudio

Who wouldn’t love to work in an office like that?! 7

10

www.dwellstudio.com http://dwellstudio.com/Blog/ 8

Who do you think has the biggest influence on the Design world right now? Target –they are partnering with the best designers and they are bringing design to everybody - essentially – and the price and concept of design at a big box store does not seem so out there anymore. It’s funny how really expensive design or designers seem a bit like a relic. People want to feel like they are getting real value for the money – even those who shop the luxury market.

What is the one piece of Furniture you would die for? These days I am really feeling French 50’s lighting. I would love a 6 arm Serge Mouille chandelier or a Pierre Guariche wall sconce. They are so hard to find as originals. It is amazing to me how modern and current they still look.

9

What is the one thing EVERY living room should have? I have two -good lighting and a comfortable sofa. It sets the prefect mood when you are in a place where you look good and are at ease.

If you could choose one person (dead or alive) to design one room for, who would that person be and what would that room look like? I would love to design Sasha and Malia Obama’s white house bedrooms. I would make them fun, graphic and hip. Great prints, clean lines to play off of the amazing details in the White House architecture. I see a modern four-poster for Malia and an upholstered headboard in a great print for Sasha. I think the color scheme should be fabulous neutrals with pops of fushia and red something that will carry them through eight years in the White House and won’t seem too young. I think both girls would love a cool hang out area with comfy upholstery as well as a thought-through desk space. I would finish it off with a dramatic hanging light fixture.

They were created to encourage more use of the stairs to relieve the crowding on the escalator. Result: Over 68% more people chose the stairs. P.S. The video of people skipping the escalator in favor of composing music on the piano stairs of Odenplan subway station in has been viewed more than 2.5 million times on YouTube.

Imagine if these were in all of the subway stations? How much happier would everyone be?

.26 Empty Storefronts2 Turn Into Pop-Up Galleries

Decorators get a free canvas to show off their talents, and developers get a lavish unit that can fire the imagination of potential buyers. In their scramble to lure buyers in a market overcrowded with apartments and undersupplied with buyers, developers are struggling to increase their marketing efforts without depleting their already strained bank accounts. Showtime Show House 2009 Television is also getting in on the real estate deal. The Showtime and Metropolitan Home Show House drew in over 1,500 visitors this fall. Top designers transformed two duplex penthouses at the former 1913-vintage warehouse into opulent spaces with design cues taken from the network's popular shows, including The Tudors and Dexter. The cost of each was as much as $1 million and was borne by the magazine and the network. Now that Met Home is shut down, will the project continue with another mag next year? Image: Designer Amy Lau's 'Dexter' dining room features vinyl ceilings, skulls in liquid casing, red vials as centerpieces, a wine glass chandelier and and an entryway of tiny resin doll parts.

In the current real estate slump, landlords are looking to artists to spruce up the empty storefronts that are dotting the main streets of cities across the country. The artists pay minimal rent, sometimes none at all, to have space to showcase their work to audiences they otherwise might not reach. “The artist gets a gallery or studio, and the landlord gets a vibrant attraction that may deter crime and draw the next wave of paying tenants.” Could HGTV do a show house next year featuring its designers?

“The Glass House” is located in Johannesburg, South Africa designed by NICO VAN DER MEULEN ARCHITECTS. The future owner requested a “glamorous contemporary open-plan light-filled house that offered a view to the garden from every room,” I think it is obvious that Nico nailed it.
