SUBSIDY UNREST BY ALEX NWOKOLO 122 cm X 112 cm (48”x 44”) 2012 MIXED MEDIA (ALUMINIUM AND PAINT ON BOARD) 'Subsidy Unrest' came about in the early days of this year when the Nigerian Government removed the subsidy on fuel. People took to the streets in protest. This led to the loss of life and destruction of public amenities. The strike was eventually called off when an agreement was reached between labour and Government.

ABOUT ALEX NWOKOLO Alex Nwokolo was born in Lagos in 1963. He trained at the Auchi Polytechnic and later at University of Benin for an MFA degree. He has done 7 solo shows and 45 group shows in Nigeria, UK, Holland and South Africa. He won the American Ambassador's prize for artistic achievement in painting upon graduation, A Certificate of Merit in the Guinness Art competition 2004. He has been part of the Philips de Pury auction and is part of Bonhams ‘Africa Now’ auction in 2012. Alex likes working with socio-economic and historic issues. His subject matter varies from people to figures subject to near abstract forms. His compositions defy traditional perspective while colour helps to give them power and beauty of feeling. BY ALEX NWOKOLO “I see art as an adventure into the unknown which often includes the willingness to take risk. And I always begin my work with a concept but, as I progress I habitually take flight whenever the muse chooses and this often leads to unpredictable ends. By means of the materials that I use, it is generally a cut and paste culture of international calligraphy that one can actually see how things are made. I am a multimedia artist.”
