Message from the Vice Chancellor for Advancement Dear UALR friends and family, Thomas J. Watson Jr., the iconic American businessman and philanthropist, wisely noted that when a business decides success has been attained, all progress stops. What an appropriate message at an appropriate time of year at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock! Although we have had many prior successes, it would be unwise to believe our best days are behind us. Instead, we progress onward. We enthusiastically embrace the change that is coming even as we hold fast to longstanding and valued traditions that make a college campus so great. Students surround us as the haze of summer has finally given way to crisper, cooler air and an abundance of autumn color. New classes, new friends, new faculty … campus life can be summed up in one word: Change! Under the leadership of Chancellor Joel E. Anderson, UALR continues to undergo changes in its administrative structure. The Office of Development, for example, has merged with the Office of Alumni Affairs this year. We believe this change has already harvested a more efficient operation and increased productivity. In addition, a new digital system enables us to much more accurately track foundation account expenditures and save the campus time, paper, and money. This year also saw another change — the establishment of several new scholarships to help those who need and deserve a great education without going heavily into debt to get it. This includes an $800,000 donation to the Alumni Association, the largest gift ever received by the association. The Owen W. Parker Sr. and Merrily Parker Endowed Scholarship will provide for any education-related expense and will make a huge impact on our ability to attract and retain the most promising students at UALR. We are fortunate to work for a higher education institution and a leader who recognizes that, for all our successes, we can’t afford to rest on our laurels. More work lies ahead, but with that hard work comes much progress and positive change. And with that progress and change, comes the power to transform lives. To make a gift that changes lives, please call us. Thank you, as always, for your support of UALR. Bob G. Denman

My Opportunities

} “It’s very important,” she said. “It helps bring in business. If the Little Rock Chamber of Commerce shows there are options for quality higher education, it helps grow our city.” In addition, Carney’s daughter, Julann, graduated with a master’s degree in public administration from UALR, and stepson, Cy Carney, is a former city manager.

Anna Beth White

Generosity

advances career and central Arkansas

Betta Carney is so serious about the benefits of higher education to this area that she served on UALR’s Board of Visitors for 19 years. “I have been able to see all the changes that have occurred under the leadership of Dr. Anderson and others, and it has been absolutely wonderful,” she said. “I am so proud of what they have done. To take the school — almost from the status of a junior college to the status it has achieved now — it has been a wonderful thing for this city and the state.” Not only has Carney left a legacy in the number of hours she has donated to the university, she and her late husband also agreed to establish the Betta and Cy Carney Scholarship several years ago. The scholarship is awarded to a graduate student pursuing a degree in public administration. Carney said she and her husband agreed to establish the scholarship, not for recognition, but to boost the central Arkansas business community.

UALR’s growing MPA program, which is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration, provides students with an understanding of public policy issues needed for management and policy positions in various levels of government and the nonprofit sector.

Anna Beth White, 31, is the latest recipient of the scholarship. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science in 2004 and currently works for a nonprofit agency. She said she hopes the advanced degree will enable her to be a resource and advocate for her agency’s mission. “But I’m aware that the degree will also enable me to explore other career opportunities, perhaps in the public sector,” White said. “And there may be a time when I need to pursue other career opportunities so I can continue to be a resource for the program that I care so deeply about.” Scholarship winners are chosen by MPA faculty at UALR. White was notified by one of her professors toward the end of the 2013 spring semester. “I was completely humbled by the recognition and profoundly grateful for the support,” she said. “Because of the nature of this scholarship, being recognized by the faculty for my efforts, the difference has been an affirmation that this is where I needed to be.” White said she was concerned that she would not be able to manage a career and school, but her scholarship financially eased that burden. It also reinforced in her the commitment to finish the program with confidence in her abilities. “Today I know that I am able to not only manage, but excel, in both my personal pursuits and career demands,” she said. To her scholarship donors, she added, “Thank you for your contribution. Not only does it speak highly of a program that is truly investing in its students, but it gives recipients the encouragement needed to persevere.”

The following playwrights have visited the UALR campus to inspire the next generation of writers through the endowed fund:

The prodigious work produced by writer Kerry Lee Kennedy — whose contributions were cut short following her untimely death from cancer at age 56 — left a legacy that extends from the East Coast to the West and has come full circle back to Arkansas.

• Sheila Callaghan, recipient of the prestigious Whiting Award, who was profiled by Marie Claire as one of “18 Successful Women Who Are Changing the World.”

In the scripts she wrote, Kennedy always revealed a bit about herself as a small-town southern girl who pursued her dreams and lived life to the fullest. Today the dreams she left behind are being fulfilled through the Kerry Kennedy Aspiring Playwright Endowed Fund, established to benefit students of the Department of Theatre Arts and Dance at UALR. The fund was created in 2006 to honor Kennedy’s life and work. It provides assistance in the development of playwriting opportunities among UALR students. Kennedy, an alum of both UALR and Yale University, used her intelligence and wit to convey the human condition and earned accolades from New York to Hollywood in the process.

• Jack Heifner, best known for his play “Vanities” that ran for five years in New York and became one of the longest running plays in off-Broadway history. Kerry Lee Kennedy

Alum’s legacy inspires next generation of

writers

In the made-for-television drama “Baby,” released in 2000, Kennedy received attention from her professional peers and was nominated for an award by the Writer’s Guild of America. A few years earlier, she had written the teleplay “Hope,” loosely based on her own experience as an aspiring dancer who dreams of success in the big city. In fact, Kennedy began her professional career as a dancer. Upon graduation from UALR, she had moved to Dallas where she was cast in the original tour of “A Chorus Line.” She toured nationally, eventually settling in New York City to pursue a career in playwriting before moving to Los Angeles. Three times since the Kennedy fund was established, visiting guest artists-playwrights with national reputations have mentored neophyte playwright students at UALR.

• Madeleine George, a former resident playwright at New Dramatist, who has taught writing at New York University and also at Bard College, Barnard College, SUNY Purchase, and the University of Rochester. These visits were attached to Fringe Festival efforts where students were invited to submit 10-minute plays, some of which were chosen for production. Many of the submitted plays were from non-majors all over the university.

“Each of the chosen plays was produced entirely by students, with the visiting artists providing professional feedback,” said Department of Theatre Arts and Dance Chair Jay Raphael. Augmented with departmental funds, Channel 62 was hired to film and broadcast live interviews with each playwright. According to Raphael, these initiatives were only possible because of the Kennedy fund. “To witness artists from all walks of life come to UALR to engage and instruct our students is a testament to Kerry Kennedy’s enduring spirit,” said Raphael. “Through her writing, she gave the gift of herself. Today, the endowed fund named for her provides the gift of education.”

Although Boaz handles many planned gifts through her job, handling details of this scholarship was even more personal than usual. She is the daughter of the late Cecil Boaz. “Since I graduated from and worked at UALR and both Mrs. Mano and their son, Randy, attended UALR, a scholarship seemed logical,” said Boaz. “My dad and Mr. Mano met at our church back in the late 1960s. They ‘double dated’ with their wives, spent many hours on the golf course, and ended up having a deep and abiding friendship for over 40 years,” she said. Polly & Leonard Mano

Although Mano was a CPA, the scholarship was established to honor the work of Cecil Boaz, an electrical engineer.

“Dad worked for the telephone company for 40-plus years except for the year and a half he was on loan to Western Electric and the NASA space program, where he worked on the tracking system for Project Mercury, the first manned-space flight,” said Mary Boaz. Evan Schrodel

It is perhaps not uncommon for a student to benefit from a scholarship without fully comprehending the compelling history behind its establishment. The Mano/Boaz Scholarship at UALR is one such planned gift with a rich and compelling history. The 40-year relationship leading up to its establishment makes it abundantly evident that a person can give a gift, but a friendship can leave a legacy.

On a winter day near Christmas 2006, at a family gathering for lunch, Mano delivered a powerful speech about friendship, family, and what it meant to him to have the friendship of Cecil Boaz, a man he held in highest regard. The latest beneficiary is Evan Schrodel, a nontraditional student who returned to school following the closing of Hawker Beechcraft in Little Rock. Schrodel, who carries a 4.0 grade point average, said UALR is “an amazing school to attend” and added that the systems engineering program is “quite challenging.” “I treat school as my new job,” he wrote, in a personal note of thanks to Mano earlier this year. “(The scholarship) is bringing me ever closer to fulfilling a personal life goal with more ease.”

Created in 2006, it benefits students of the Department of Systems Engineering in the George W. Donaghey College of Engineering and Information Technology at UALR.

“Dad and Mr. Mano both believed in generosity and compassion and helping others have a chance at a better life … it really was the perfect gift,” said Mary Boaz.

When Cecil Boaz was first diagnosed with dementia, Leonard Mano wanted to honor his long-time friend by establishing a scholarship.

“This isn’t just money that is distributed, it is a gift that carries with it a friendship and the dreams of two wonderful men who worked their whole lives to create something lasting,” she concluded.

Both men were World War II veterans and the first in their families to receive a college education, according to Mary Boaz, director of planned giving for UALR’s Office of Alumni and Development.

art

Extending the gifts of

Taylor Nolley

Taylor Nolley, 21, of Little Rock is a student who views the world through an artistic lens. “There’s art in almost everything,” she explains. “A world without art would certainly be dull, but how we define what art is can also be so interesting. I do think our world would not be as fun or interesting without it.” Nolley, a studio art major at UALR, credits the Cindy Conger Endowed Visual Art Award for helping her pursue her passion. She is the first student to receive the award. Established to provide art majors needing assistance with art supplies, preference is given to a junior or senior, with academic and financial need strongly considered. To receive the award, Nolley submitted a portfolio with paintings, figure drawings, and threedimensional pieces. “I do a little bit of everything. There is not one particular medium I am drawn to,” she said. However, Nolley admits to being influenced by her late father, who was an exhibit director for a museum and enjoyed making three-dimensional pieces. She sees herself pursuing a degree in sculpture and possibly minoring in set design to prepare for theater or film work upon graduation. In fact, her work could be seen in the recent set design of “The Waiting Room,” produced by the Department of Theatre and Dance at UALR. Nolley expressed her gratitude for the award, since all her college and living expenses have been supported

by her father’s life insurance plan and part-time work at a local restaurant. “I’m glad I had dad’s Cindy Conger insurance, but this scholarship makes me feel like what I’ve done is interesting and worth something to someone else besides me,” she said. “It is definitely people like Cindy Conger who make doing art that much more worthwhile,” Nolley said. “Knowing people give their hard-earned money so that people like me can do what we love to do ... I want her to know that it is much appreciated.” In addition to the endowed scholarship for visual arts, Conger has also generously supported the Trojan athletic program, faculty development, and general education scholarships. Never one to feel that writing checks is enough, Conger has served on the UALR Foundation Fund Board of Directors, giving her time as a member of the Scholarship Committee and in other areas. She is also a UALR designated representative on the University of Arkansas Foundation Inc. Board of Directors, where she serves on the Audit Committee. “Cindy is passionate about helping others plan for their best life and accomplish their goal of completing a college education,” said Vice Chancellor for Advancement Bob Denman. “Her enthusiastic support through the years has left a lasting legacy.”
