Residence Life and Housing

The Residence Hall Director Position

Our Mission The mission for Residence Life and Housing is to offer exemplary facilities while encouraging learning, acceptance and cooperation that engages all individuals as positive community members by providing opportunities for academic support, civic responsibility and personal and leadership development.

Professional Development Opportunities Residence Life and Housing is highly dedicated to supporting professional staff development for our residence hall directors. RHDs are encouraged to pursue internships in other offices on campus. In addition, each RHD participates in a Residence Life Development Plan (RLDP) and an Individual Development Plan (IDP). These are designed to provide a framework for intentional professional development opportunities over the course of the RHD’s tenure at SUNY Cortland. The RLDP includes monthly competency-based learning sessions in topic areas based on ACUHO-I Hall Director competencies: administration; supervision; residential education and student development; crisis management; diversity; equity and inclusion; interpersonal skills and communication; professional foundations; and professional development. Included in the IDP are options for campus committee membership, internships with other offices across campus, conference attendance and other elective campus learning sessions. Both plans allow for a progression of development that seeks to broaden the RHD’s experiences from the office to campus and beyond.

SUNY Cortland and the Division of Student Affairs Located atop of one of the rolling hills in Central New York’s “City of the Seven Valleys”, the State University of New York College at Cortland was founded in 1868 as the Cortland Normal School. Over the decades the campus expanded and in 1941, by an act of the New York State legislature and the Board of Regents, the institution officially became a founding member of the State University of New York. Currently SUNY Cortland enrolls 6400 undergraduate students, of which 50% live on campus, and 710 graduate students. Residence Life and Housing is part of the Division of Student Affairs at SUNY Cortland.
