My Carpet is not the Toilet! Toilet training your puppy? The process most likely to create stress. For you definitely. It might also make your puppy nervous. If everyone’s in a tizz, the chances of success reduce exponentially. House-training is a common problem in puppy classes. The exasperated owner looking pale, ready to throw in the towel will assure me that she is doing her best to house-train her puppy, but the dog just doesn’t get it. She wonders if she managed to get the only dog in the world that will never understand that the doggie bathroom is outside, and not on the carpets inside! It is possible to shift your pup’s perspective to the great outdoors. Here is how… House-training is about consistency, patience and positive reinforcement. The goal is to instill good habits and build a loving bond with your pet. It typically takes 4-6 months for a puppy to be fully housetrained but some puppies may take up to a year. So, a sense of humour will help too. Size can be a predictor. (For instance, small breeds have small bladders and higher metabolisms. They require more frequent trips outside.) Provided you remember to ignore the behaviour you don’t want and reinforce (with praise) what you do want, you are on the right track. When to begin? When the puppy is between 12-16 weeks old.

Take your puppy to do its business in the same spot every time and stay with it until it is done. Most important, when puppy gets it right, make a fuss, give plenty of praise or even a treat.
Common errors • Punishing your puppy for having an accident is just not on. It teaches your puppy to fear you. This makes the puppy scared of doing anything in front of you, even outdoors. • Using ammonia based cleaning compounds which smell very similar to urine won’t help at all. It will increase the urge to go in the unwanted spot. • Access to rugs or carpet which are fluffy and absorbent, just like grass, will exacerbate your problems. Close those rooms off or get a baby-gate. • It is unfair to expect your puppy to go right through the night when it is very young. • Laziness on your part – especially in the middle of the night - will result in more puddles indoors than outdoors. Do not be lazy, some things are worth a little hard work and this is one of them. It’s not for long and if you are diligent, it is likely to make the time shorter. • Feeding at the wrong times or over feeding is a no-no. • As with all things ‘dog’, your own energy and state of mind are big factors in your house-training efforts. If you are feeling nervous or impatient, or trying to rush your puppy to relieve itself, that can be stressful to the little chap and could set the training back. Stay calm, consistent and take your time. • Leaving the puppy on its own for too long, so that it is forced to go indoors, sends the wrong message.
How to begin? • Keep the puppy on a regular feeding schedule and don’t leave him with food to nibble between meals. • Always take your puppy onto the lawn straight after meals. Eating a meal stimulates the digestive system and a puppy will usually urinate 15 minutes Done correctly, house training should be after eating. Are you considering getting a puppy or do you already own a dog? You’ve done some research into diets and may be feeding a particular brand, but are you really up to speed the dietary requirements for your dog and why you should be reading labels more carefully? Let’s simplify your dog’s dietary needs... It is widely known that dogs do better if fed animal protein instead of vegetable protein. As such, when choosing a dog food, you should be looking for high quality, animal-based protein such as chicken or lamb making up an appropriate part of the diet. This is integral for every dog’s lifestyle and lifestage and is important for overall health, muscle development and joint support. What is important, is to feed a complete and balanced diet where all ingredients are combined to give optimal nutrition to your dog. This includes moderately fermentable fibre for intestinal health and high or low fats, depending on weight loss or high energy needs. This is the basic groundwork for an extraordinary dog, but be sure and read the ingredients list carefully in order to make informed decisions on the correct diet for your dog. Compare labels... When reading labels, the most important ingredients to look out for are proteins, fats and carbohydrates (see table for sources of these key nutrients). The label should always have protein listed near the top, as ingredients are listed from highest to lowest levels and it’s important to have more animal-based proteins listed high up and preferably first.

High quality, animal protein diets also require a smaller daily intake (dependent on dog size) and better nutrient absorption by the body with smaller, fimer stools. Sources of nutrients are tabled here for easy reference when you read your labels. Animal Proteins:
Chicken, egg, fish and lamb.
Fats:
Omega-6 fats come from animal fats and plants oils. Omega-3 fats come from fish oil, fish meal and flax.
Carbohydrates: Rice, wheat, barley, corn and sorghum. Remember that not all proteins are the same and not all corn ingredients are used as a source of carbohydrates. Corn gluten is often seen on pet food labels and this is a common vegetable protein source. In looking for value for money when it comes to pet food, always buy the best you can afford because your pets are what they eat.

OLYMPIAN TANITH MAXWELL Tanith Maxwell is a female South Africa runner who has competed over distances ranging from 10 km to the marathon. She represented South Africa at the Commonwealth Games (2006 Australia), All Africa Games (2007 Algiers), World Athletic Championship (2007 Japan), World Athletic Championship(2009, Germany) and the Summer Olympics (2012 London) running in the marathon. She is running her first ultra marathon at the Two Oceans in April. When and why did you start running? I started running at the age of 6. My uncle, Kevin Flannegan had come down to Durban to compete in the South African Marathon champs. He won and I remember being blown away by the whole experience. I was given my first pair of running shoes during his visit and I haven’t looked back! Who has been your role model? Being a distance runner, my role model has to be Paula Radcliffe. She is the world record holder in the marathon and someone who has inspired me throughout my running. What was it like growing up with a vet for a dad and a zoologist as a mom? Certainly interesting! Animals have always been a huge part of my life because of them…..and it wasn’t always the usual domesticated ones! I was always involved in caring for and rearing baby mammals, birds and reptiles. I count myself very lucky!
only got him when he was already 8 months old. I think his loyalty to me is his most endearing quality. He never lets me out of his sight and becomes quite protective of me when there are unfamiliar people or dogs around. What is the number one thing people should do for their pets? Give them loads of love and attention! Do you ever take your dogs running with you? Elliott doesn’t come running with me - he is too old and his legs are too short!! Daschunds don’t make good distance running dogs anyway! How do you and Elliot best like to unwind? I think that is when I take him to the local dog park in Kloof. He likes to retrieve small stones or avo pips that I throw for him and it’s generally a chilled time for the both of us! When and where can we watch your next race? My next big race is in Cape Town when I tackle my first ultra marathon, the Two Oceans! It takes place over the Easter weekend, on the 4th April!

LEFT TO DIE IN THE MOUNTAINS – UNTIL KAPS STEPPED IN KAPS heard about Lucy by chance from one of their volunteers. Afflicted with mange, with fur missing from all over her small body, she had been taken into the mountains, tied up, and left to die. By the time she was found she was starving, parasite-ridden and her ears were terribly burnt by the sun. With careful nursing, nutritious food and lots of TLC in one of KAPS’s foster-homes, she made an amazing recovery and is now living happily with her new family. The Karoo Animal Protection Society – KAPS – has been rescuing animals in distress like Lucy for the past 14 years. KAPS is effective because it is a mobile organisation, pro-actively patrolling and monitoring conditions of animals in the impoverished rural communities of the Klein Karoo. Its core efforts are concentrated in some of South Africa’s most problematic municipalities. Its key priority is to keep up the year-round programme of free sterilisation that is vital to prevent the back-yard breeding that would otherwise produce overwhelming numbers of sick and malnourished animals. It’s hard enough for animal charities who work in townships. Even more difficult are the depressed rural and farming areas covered by KAPS, with huge animal numbers spread over isolated and inaccessible locations lacking in infrastructure. Roads that are unmade, often washed away and seldom repaired. Distances to travel spanning hundreds of kilometres – and if you need a vet, you may have to go yet another hundred kilometres. Naturally the animal owners don’t have their own transport, so when the Society holds its free mass clinics, sterilising dozens of pets at a time, it usually pays for visiting welfare vets who set up temporary operating theatres in the communities being helped. An organisation like KAPS survives because it cuts outlay to the bone. Being a mobile facility, there are no offices or admin staff, hence no regular salaries to pay. KAPS don’t believe that dogs thrive in kennels so all their rescued animals are fostered by volunteers in loving household where they receive individual care and their characters 12
are assessed for rehoming to suitable new owners. Run by volunteers, KAPS is manned by ad hoc workers who don’t sit waiting for cases to come to them. Their vehicles are out on the road 7 days a week delivering help free of charge to communities mired in poverty and unemployment, where it’s rare to find animal owners who can afford proper food and care. The organisation’s eyes and ears are volunteers embedded in the communities. Inspections have revealed cases such as the little dog found in a pitiful state inside a barrel without food or water and with the lid held closed using bricks and rocks. The owner tried to blame his 14-year-old son. KAPS ensured he was prosecuted, and he was ordered to spend a year behind bars or pay a R3,000 fine. Many cases are even more distressing. At any given time KAPS will be pursuing several prosecutions as a result of working in half a dozen core centres in the Klein Karoo plus several outreach areas, that extend as far as the Eastern Cape interior. Working with the justice system can be endlessly frustrating, with precious time wasted on following up dockets that are ‘lost’ or cases endlessly postponed. Among the saddest cases are the donkeys and horses that are worked too hard – sometimes even to death – by subsistence farmers and other impoverished owners. In the Klein Karoo they still use donkey-carts, and KAPS is the only local organisation that provides free mouth-bits, exchanges new cart-harnesses for old, runs donkey clinics, and takes abused donkeys into sanctuary.

KAPS chairperson Colette Teale, who founded the organisation, explains that when your income is entirely dependent on goodwill donations, it presents a terrible dilemma to spend so much on any single rescued animal.
