Palacio Arzobispal o de Gelmírez Archbishop’s Palace or Palace of Gelmírez
El primer arzobispo de Santiago, Diego Gelmírez, se hizo construir esta residencia a partir de 1120, tras la destrucción de su palacio en revueltas urbanas. La fachada actual, añadida en el siglo XVIII, protege un palacio medieval con cocina, patio flanqueado por la Catedral y salones medievales reformados en siglos sucesivos. Entre ellos destaca el salón sinodal del siglo XII, cubierto por una impresionante bóveda de crucería.
Una imagen: Tras franquear la entrada, el inesperado verdor del antiguo patio de Gramáticos. Una curiosidad: La cocina y su fregadero, cuyo desagüe da a las caballerizas. Imprescindible: El salón sinodal, con una inmensa bóveda que descansa sobre ménsulas bellamente decoradas con escenas de un festín medieval. Los sirvientes presentan alimentos –panes, empanadas, calderos- a la nobleza y el clero, mientras tocan los músicos y cantan los juglares.
The first archbishop of Santiago, Diego Gelmírez, had this residence built starting in 1120, after the destruction of his palace during urban revolts. The present-day façade, added in the 18th century, protects a medieval palace with a kitchen, a courtyard bordered by the Cathedral and medieval halls altered in successive centuries. Among them the synodal hall stands out, covered with an impressive ribbed vault.
An image: After flanking the entrance, the unexpected greenness of the old “Gramáticos” courtyard. A curiosity: The kitchen and its sink, whose drainpipe leads to the stables. Not to be missed: The synodal hall, with an immense vault resting on beautifully decorated corbels depicting scenes from a medieval feast. The servants are presenting foodstuffs –bread, pies, cauldrons- to the nobility and clergy, while musicians are playing and minstrels are singing.
