• MOBILE TELEPHONY Movistar, Amena and Vodafone are the companies that provide this service in Spain. All three offer two possibilities for using mobile telephones: pay as you talk or pay monthly (each operator has its own types and rates). -Technologies Different mobile telephony technologies currently coexist in Spain, with more advanced ones soon to be added: 1. Analogical system, available until January 2007 but practically nonexistent. 2. GSM (Groupe Spécial Mobile): it is expected to be available for at least 23 more years; currently the most used system. 3. WAP (Wireless Internet Protocol): protocol incorporating the advantages of the Internet into mobile phones, which has had little success with users. 4. GPRS (General Packet Radio System): Telefónica Móviles is the only company that markets this system, which almost doubles the transmission speed. 5. UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System): this is the standard that will be used by so-called “3G” mobile telephony. Still not commercially available. 6. 3-G, third generation mobile telecommunications. Such services provide the possibility of transferring voice and data (a phone call) as well as non-voice data, such as downloading programmes, exchanging e-mail and instant messaging, in addition to videoconferences.
