EL AUTÉNTICO FINIS TERRAE DEL IMPERIO ROMANO Cuenta la tradición –los historiadores Estrabón y Floro así lo refieren- que en el año 135 antes de Cristo las legiones romanas comandadas por Decius Junius Brutus hollaron el norte de la península Ibérica. Entraban a la Gallaecia desde el sur, tras detenerse aterrados ante el río Limia. No temían su caudal, sino el hecho de poderse hallar ante el Río del Olvido, aquel que haría de quien atravesara sus aguas un vagabundo apátrida y sin recuerdos.
THE ROMAN EMPIRE'S REAL “FINIS TERRAE” According to tradition, and related by the historians Strabon and Florus, in the year 135 B.C. the Roman legions led by Decius Junius Brutus subjugated the northern Iberian Peninsula. They entered Gallaecia from the south, after stopping terrified in front of the Limia River. They were not afraid of its volume of water but of the fact that it could be the River of Forgetfulness, turning those who cross it into stateless vagabonds without memories. Decius showed great courage by crossing to the other side
Decius había dado prueba de gran valor al pasar a la otra orilla y llamar a cada soldado por su nombre, espantando el temor a la desmemoria. Pero el miedo volvería más tarde, frente a un promontorio rocoso lamido por el mare tenebrosum. No parecía haber más allá ni más nunca. El caudillo confesaría más tarde que había temblado al escuchar cómo el disco solar se sumergía en el mar con el mismo ruido del hierro al rojo vivo metido súbitamente al agua que lo templa. Quizás no volviese a emerger. Aquel era el mítico finis terrae, el punto de no retorno del Imperio Romano.
