instructor index the places photography takes us Tanzania, Oaxaca, Bhutan, Peru, Oregon, Route 66, Central Park, and Santa Fe are some of the breathtaking places photography is taking us this year. With our camera as our passport and adventure in our dreams, we head off to explore the world and its amazing places with eyes fine-tuned to make images. Our passion for photography encourages us to go places, to wander, to experience, and to see the land, people and culture in a way not possible without a camera. Over the years, I have been lucky enough to take part in several of our Around The World educational programs that promote cultural exchange and people-to-people interaction. My resulting images, mostly portraits, reveal the character and heart of the people I encountered. The process of creating a portrait and the resulting personal exchange enabled me to learn more about their lives. One lovely encounter with Marta and her granddaughter resulted in a portrait I am proud of. This connection would not have been possible without a camera around my neck. Photography takes us to places and it also reveals these places to us. The camera is a wonderful instrument of discovery and understanding. It connects us to the people and events we encounter and engage in the photographic process. The camera can also turn itself around and provide insights into who we are and how we see the world. I learn about myself when I make images. You can, too. The camera is an amazing tool! This year, make a pledge to let photography take you to places unseen and worlds undiscovered, be it a far-flung destination or your back yard. With all good wishes,

Mentorships Overview Learning from a master through an apprenticeship has been a valued tradition throughout history. Even today, many experts recommend working one-on-one with a mentor to accelerate one’s path to success. Designed for advanced amateur photographers and professionals, our Mentorship Program connects you with our talented photographer instructors —from anywhere in the world. A mentorship is often goal-oriented; it could focus on developing a business plan to start your photography career, building a stronger portfolio for graduate school, exhibiting in a gallery, printing in a magazine, publishing your book, or simply creating a memorable portfolio of personal images under the watchful eye of a photography master. Your mentor will champion your work—guiding and supporting your dreams and aspirations as a photographer.

Intensive: Flowers Close Up June 1-3

Explore new ways of finding, seeing, and making beautiful photographic images by discovering different methods of capturing the exquisite details of flowers and plants. By moving in close and revealing detail, you perceive new ways of creating the unique, individual, and personal renditions that are not always immediately obvious. We begin with visits to private gardens and a plant nursery to photograph in exterior daylight, studying, among other things, how to control or soften light in order to get the best results. Next, we photograph indoors using available light in a more controlled situation. Props, reflectors, and various backgrounds help to create mood and atmosphere. We review close-up flower images through a series of slideshows, exploring a number of artistic themes. In individual and group critiques led by Francesca, we examine composition, color, depth, and texture. Working both spontaneously and meticulously, we look at abstraction and how to interpret our subjects in multiple ways. Using an array of techniques, we master methods of enhancing and capturing the details in flowers and plants to bring forward intimate interpretations of form and result in truly creative photographs. This workshop is bound to inspire any and all interested in flowers, nature and the art of photography.

FRANCESCA YORKE, originally from the United Kingdom, now resides in Santa Fe. Her clients include Gardens Illustrated and a variety of national newspapers and Condé Nast publications. Francesca has over 30 book commissions including Nigella Bites and Going Organic. She was the art editor for a leading international photo agency, and the creative analyst for The Telegraph Color Library. Francesca’s personal work is wide ranging, from abstract flower portraits to black-and-white reportage. She also portrays the denizens of various contemporary subcultures such as rodeo performers and the world of extreme fighting. This is her fourth year teaching for The Workshops. Portraits That Make a Difference

June 4-8

Everyone has dreams and passions. Harnessing them to create personal projects that make a difference in the world is one of the most rewarding things a photographer can do. In this workshop Scott encourages us to explore our own lives, in order to find purpose with our portraiture and turn our dreams into reality. Trust, compassion, empathy, and communication are so very important for engaging with subjects and putting them at ease. Scott explores how these qualities can be used to the photographer’s advantage in order to bring out the best in subjects, resulting in powerful portraits. Breaking down the barrier that exists between subject and photographer is addressed and put to the test through fun psychological exercises. Critical to making great portraits is the simplification of technique and lighting, to the point where it becomes second nature. Scott shares his simple lighting set-up and methods of combining strobe with natural light to enhance any environment. Participants photograph each other as well as interesting locals in the Santa Fe area. Daily critiques allow for room to learn, grow, and try new things. We delve into simple post processing in Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop and, because we’re operating out of The Workshops state-of-the-art digital lab, everyone is given an opportunity to print their best portraits. Scott Pasfield’s work has appeared in numerous publications, from BlackBook to Fortune and POZ to Gotham. His clients include the Independent Film Channel, Time Inc., and the American Red Cross. With a background in architecture, Scott utilizes the interplay between space and subject to reveal new dimensions within each portrait. Combining a practiced eye and a relaxed attitude with a determination to develop meaningful projects, Scott is intent on making a difference through art. His first book, Gay in America, was released in September 2011 to great reviews and is creating an impact at libraries nationwide. This is Scott‘s second year teaching at The Workshops. Nik Software Retouching Techniques: The Image Whisperer

Have you ever wondered how to get the great images you envisioned when you captured them in your camera? Although the exposure, the lighting, and the framing seemed right, somehow the image on your computer monitor does not match what you saw and felt when you looked through the viewfinder. This hands-on workshop explores retouching techniques that empower your creative vision and bring back that “alive” feeling—the mood, the light, and all the nuances that first inspired you to capture the image. Using Adobe Photoshop, the full suite of Nik Software products, and Wacom tablets, Janice demonstrates new techniques that do away with tedious selections and endless steps, thereby saving many hours in front of the computer. Topics include getting the most out of your workflow, optimizing raw image files, noise reduction techniques, global adjustments versus targeted adjustments, and what working in black-and-white can teach you about image exposure and light. We also explore selective enhancements, bringing out detail, applying traditional techniques, creating black-and-white images from color capture, and developing a personal style through retouching. Step by step, Janice energizes and inspires you. Come learn to listen to your images and to see what is possible in the final steps of image enhancement. JANICE WENDT is one of the industry’s most respected retouch and image enhancement artists, one who “trains the trainers” on numerous techniques related to digital imaging. As an education and training manager at Nik Software, Janice instructs professionals across the country in all aspects of digital capture and digital workflow. Her practical approach to retouching features alternative, timesaving techniques for professional and beginning photographers alike. Janice is also a commercial and portrait photographer with more than 25 years of experience in film and digital photography. This is her fourth year teaching at The Workshops. Alternative Photographic Processes June 24-29

Investigate an extensive menu of alternative photographic processes in this adventurous, hands-on workshop. Christopher welcomes creative people from all disciplines—especially those individuals who possess an active sense of humor. He encourages participants to jump-start their artistic energies by experimenting with a wide array of alternative and esoteric processes. The ultimate objective of this workshop is to reveal new options, restore creative energy, and inspire new directions for each participant’s unique vision and artistic growth. Among the processes we explore are cyanotype, cyanotype murals, kallitype, Argyrotype, salted paper, albumen, fumed silica albumen and Athentatype, gum bichromate, platinum / palladium, and Ziatype, as well as process combinations, and toning options for a variety of processes. Other topics include large-format pinhole photography, simplified digital negative production, paper preparation, and a survey of historical and contemporary alternative processes. The Personal Photographic Image June 24-29

The powerful medium of photography allows us to manifest our personal stories. Stories told through photographs can come from a place of joy or pain, and they may be truthful or fictitious; the only essential factor is that they be intensely felt by their maker. The challenge is to avoid the universal and clichéd and, by seeking out the specific and the personal, to discover the unique. Using metaphor and symbolism, participants photograph across many genres—the found and the constructed, the landscape, the still life, the portrait, and the self-portrait—in order to articulate their narratives visually. We devote the magical hours of early morning and late afternoon to making images so that our stories are told in beautiful light. The rest of the day is spent as a group in the classroom, writing, brainstorming picture ideas, critiquing images from the previous day, and viewing work by other artists who have used personal experience as a vehicle. Cig meets individually with each participant to discuss how to push his/ her work further and avoid repetition. Uncover the elements of your own story and learn how to make pictures that are, as Cig puts it, “about things not just of things.”

Christopher James is an internationally known artist and photographer whose paintings and alternative process images have been exhibited in galleries and museums in the U.S. and abroad. His work has shown in the Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, George Eastman House, and Philadelphia Museum of Art. His book, The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes—the winner of The Golden Light Technical Book of the Year award—is recognized as the definitive reference text in alternative process image making. Previously at Harvard University, Christopher is presently at The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University, serving as director of the MFA in photography program, and chair of photography. Cig Harvey’s photographs have been exhibited in permanent collections of major museums, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography, in Rochester, New York. Cig was a recent finalist for the BMW Prize at Paris Photo and, in the spring of 2012, had her first solo museum show at the Stenersen Museum, in Oslo, in conjunction with the release of her monograph You Look At Me Like An Emergency. Cig is a full-time assistant professor of photography at the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University. She is known for her high energy, optimism, and creative teaching style. The Portrait: Finding Your Voice June 24-29

A powerful portrait is a gift—an expression not only of the subject, but also of the photographer. The process is a dance, an endlessly fascinating exercise in give and take. Accordingly, the pathways to a powerful portrait are many. The question that the portrait photographer must answer: “Which path do I choose?” The goal of this workshop is to explore those paths. Will it be environmental? Intimate? Studio? And what of light? Is it found or produced? Is the portrait an absolute likeness or an impression? And what of the face? Is it necessary to show the face to define character, or might a silhouette, a fragment, or a torso suffice as a substitute? Is the photographer seeking spontaneity, a gesture, or movement? Kurt presents examples of successful portraits, culled from his extensive archive and from the files of photography legends such as Strand, Weston, and Evans, as well as contemporary masters. These presentations are followed by critiques from the day’s assignments and portfolio reviews. Emphasis is on active picture making with models, using simple lighting techniques in a variety of locations, indoors and out. Portraiture on location is a personally rewarding and challenging adventure, but one that at times is limited by the light that is available to you. This workshop brings the worlds of creative portraiture and technical control together, to demystify the technical side of using strobe lights, teach us how to meld it with available light, and open up new windows into creating portraits with your own look and feel. Through daily technical exercises and photography sessions, we explore and master the fundamental function and use of light, strobe lights and the various modifiers that help shape and create the effects we are looking for. Mornings are dedicated to reviewing the previous days accomplishments with an open creative critique to help boost our awareness of design, framing, posing, and use of lighting. To practice our new lighting skills and techniques, our afternoons take us out of the studio to some of the most unique and stunning locations in New Mexico. Of course, no portrait lighting class is complete without willing subjects and wonderful models to help us create stunning portraits. Every day promises to be event-filled and action-packed. We learn the various methods of portraiture, explore standard lighting techniques, appropriate lens choices, flattering posing, and even take a look at the psychology of location portrait photography. In Search of the Spirit: Its Land and People June 24-29

Learning how to identify the spiritual and sacred essence of a place, a person, or a culture is at the heart of this workshop. Participants explore the deserts and mountains of northern New Mexico, the traditions of the Native American culture, and the spiritual communities of Santa Fe and Taos. Our focus is on the documentary approach to photographing cultures and their environments. Daily assignments emphasize tuning in to the land and its primeval energy, as well as listening and watching for a spiritual connection to unfold during a portrait session. Chris joins participants on field trips to help them find the link between what they see and what they feel, and then to capture their emotions with their camera. We look at personal documentary projects from the philosophical to the technical, the spiritual to the pragmatic, including magazine assignments, books, and fine-art exhibitions. Chris also discusses funding, publishing, exhibitions, and careers in travel photography, and meets individually with each participant. CHRIS RAINIER is one of today’s leading documentary photographers, specializing in wilderness areas and indigenous cultures. He has photographed numerous civil conflicts, wars, and natural disasters and has explored the North Pole, Antarctica, and the jungles of New Guinea. A National Geographic Society Fellow, Chris specializes in photographing endangered cultures and helps bring cameras, video, and computers to native communities around the globe. Chris is director of the National Geographic All Roads Photography Program. He is a contributing editor at National Geographic Traveler, specializing in indigenous cultures. Today’s digital SLR cameras offer endless creative opportunities—but only if you know how to use them. Whether you recently acquired your first digital camera or have owned one for a few years, this workshop empowers you to take control of your camera’s features and advance your skills. Designed like a hands-on user manual, this workshop provides you with the knowledge essential to explore all the capabilities of the digital SLR. Jennifer patiently guides participants through the variables of aperture, shutter speed, and the various settings and shooting modes. We learn how to incorporate these tools with different lenses, and explore techniques of composition and lighting in order to create more interesting and powerful images. Mornings are devoted to lectures, discussions, and critiques of the previous day’s work, while afternoons are spent practicing newly acquired skills in the picturesque environs of Santa Fe. This workshop offers photographic artists the opportunity to learn the beauty and complexity of the historical wet-plate collodion process from a contemporary perspective. Christopher provides a dynamic, handson, group experience in an energetic and supportive environment. Participants receive continual assistance and immediate feedback on works in progress, along with an open exchange of working concepts, ideas, history, and techniques. Demonstrations, and learning through repetition, success, and failure, are a continuous part of the workshop. A sense of wonder, an appreciation of the accidental, and a sense of humor are especially helpful. Using Christopher’s definitive reference text, The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes, Second Edition, and supplemental handouts, as our guide, we proceed to make wet-plate collodion ferrotypes. Christopher provides several antique cameras and lenses to work with, and all chemistry, tanks, and plates are provided. We begin learning about the process in a dedicated Workshop facility and then get on the road to make wet-plate collodion images using outdoor New Mexico as our studio. Plans include a location day on an authentic Western movie set. Christopher’s workshops are a lot of fun, so bring your sense of adventure and curiosity about this magical process.

Finding your photographic “voice” can be a lifelong quest. With Michael Crouser as your guide, begin the journey to developing and honing your own personal aesthetic—the point of view that is uniquely your own. We start by examining the works of well-known photographers and review the choices they make in producing their images, and how they present a unique and personal voice as a photographer. We examine the choices that we make when producing a photograph, the choices that separate the image from a mere snapshot and make it a photograph we can call our own. These elements include composition, lighting, subject, perspective, black-and-white versus color, and a myriad of other choices. Our stimulating and thought provoking classroom sessions are followed with field sessions every day, to put into practice our insights, develop our eye and our voice, and to draw inspiration from the beauty of Santa Fe. We begin to see photographs differently and learn to identify the aspects of our work that are uniquely ours, as well as the aspects that we need to discard. Photographing people with skill and confidence, and having fun doing it, is the goal of this workshop with Cathy Maier Callanan. Designed for intermediate-level photographers who want to make stronger, more meaningful portraits, but may be hesitant about approaching people, we learn effective methods for approaching strangers and putting friends and family at ease. Through daily assignments, we develop the awareness and sensitivity necessary to move beyond literal renderings to more intimate portraits. Composition, lighting techniques, and forming a personal style are topics for discussion, investigation, and assignments. Everyone will leave with their own personal project. Nothing charms like surprise, yet in portraiture there seems to be so little of it. Although the human face is endlessly beguiling, most photographers settle into a routine of presenting glamorous or smiling pictures that flatter and soothe their sitters. This workshop explores a different approach to portraiture. We examine the strategies and pitfalls involved in executing truly fascinating portraits of celebrities and regular folks alike, as we learn to deal gracefully with time constraints, shy or difficult subjects, and our own fears. While the week includes some discussion of equipment and technology, most of our time and energy are devoted to developing techniques for creating relationships with our subjects and remaining in control of any situation. Assignments concentrate on taking ordinary portrait situations, both in the studio and on location, and making intriguing images out of them. Classroom discussions cover the business side of professional portrait photography, including building and maintaining a successful career, marketing, challenges and opportunities of new technologies, and how to stay vital and creative in a competitive commercial environment. Come prepared to push the envelope and take risks during this exciting and challenging week. Advanced Multimedia Storytelling

Our first stories were spoken. Soon we learned to write and then to create visual stories by making photographs. Now technology has closed the circle, allowing us to easily add the power of sound and motion to bring forward powerful narratives in multimedia. Using a still camera (with or without video capabilities) and an audio recorder, we can easily produce and share the stories we once only imagined. In this advanced workshop, everyone produces a short (2 minutes max) multimedia story that is reported, captured, and edited in Santa Fe. We walk through each step of the process together. The first part of the week, we spend mornings in class going over the topics of story, audio, interviewing, and shooting for multimedia; during those afternoons and evenings, you capture your story. By Wednesday you wrap up your field time and start digging into editing and post-production. You finish the piece with a hard deadline of 2 p.m. on Friday, July 6, 2012. The first and most important thing you bring to the class is a story idea (a character, really) that you can photo/film/record the first part of the week. It’s ideal to find a person/story that’s near The Workshops so you don’t spend hours in driving—better to spend hours hanging with your character and telling the tale. Light reveals warmth, mood, place, time, and spirit. It separates, simplifies, and creates spatial relationships. Light forms the frame of reference for photographs. It speaks many languages, and presents many views. The highest aspiration of the photographer is to translate all of these elements of light, and allow viewers to see as they have never seen before. This workshop is about slowing down, looking at the light, and thinking about what it is we want to say through our photographs. Whether our focus is on portraits, still life, or landscapes, we learn to adopt an open mind and a willingness to explore and experiment with light. We take the ordinary and allow ourselves to capture the extraordinary by reacting, interpreting, and expressing ourselves with our cameras. Daily assignments in and around Santa Fe encourage participants to venture beyond their normal comfort zone. Our workshop schedule includes time alone contemplating light and working with it, as well as time spent together discussing the work and what it reveals. Discussions, daily image reviews, and assignments fill our days, as we perceive, frame, and translate light into photographs that reveal so much more than the sum of their individual elements. Imagination and Dreams July 8-13 Elizabeth Opalenik has always been in love with photography as a metaphor for life—her life, or the life of the subject standing before her lens—believing photographs are self portraits that lie somewhere between imaginations and dreams. This workshop explores your stories and creative process to develop new ways to express your vision as a photographic artist. We have all experienced times when we are not inspired photographically, but by revealing ourselves and examining our thought process in a supportive environment we find new paths for our creative purpose. Each day is about taking risks, and often being rewarded by our best images coming from failures and happy surprises. The week is for learning to work with natural and reflected light, models, and fabrics, as well as artistic and spiritual growth through critiques and discussions. There are daily assignments—using models, ourselves, and each other—in the beautiful and fertile locations around Santa Fe. Light is the single most important ingredient in creating photographs with impact. Exciting applications of light make it possible to transform the mundane into the magnificent. This workshop is designed for photographers seeking a broad understanding of artificial lighting techniques in order to achieve greater control over their images. Light can be elusive. Often it’s too harsh or too soft. It may be nondirectional or too directional; too warm or too cool; it can even be too dark or too bright. Tony presents a solid technical foundation for portrait lighting that enables participants to surmount these common lighting challenges. His hands-on teaching style offers a thorough understanding of light quality, light-shaping tools, and metering in any working situation. Through demonstrations, daily assignments, and critiques, we explore studio lighting in depth, covering such areas as light quality, light quantity, light direction, and working with models and props. Going out on location, we learn to apply these techniques by controlling the natural environment and lighting. Tony guides participants with a high-energy, fun-filled approach to the technical side of photography while keeping a close watch on the creative side as well. Crafting Dramatic Light on Location July 8-13

Syl Arena is well known for his mantra, “To create interesting light, you have to create interesting shadows.” In this location lighting workshop Syl shows you how to implement that philosophy by creating dramatic light with portable, studio-size strobes and modifiers. Our week starts with an investigation of how lighting shapes the persona of a subject; change the lighting and you have changed the persona in the image. The first step in Syl’s approach is to increase or decrease the amount of ambient light captured by the camera. Syl demonstrates a wide range of tools—including strobes, umbrellas, softboxes, grids, and gels—and techniques to shape and color flash so you, the photographer, can craft dramatic light that conveys your inner vision. We also explore how to build creative synergies between our lighting gear and the controls of our digital cameras. Workshop mornings are spent on critiques and lighting demonstrations. In the afternoons and early evenings, we put our concepts and techniques to work in a variety of locations around Santa Fe. Throughout the week our approach is not that of documentarians, recording scenes as we see them. Rather, we take a pictorial approach and work towards an understanding of how to craft light to influence the viewer’s perception of our subjects and their environments. Santa Fe and its environs are rich with color and form. Making strong photographs depends, in part, on creating graphic strength and tension through the placement of both of these elements in the frame. Technical skills are necessary, but compelling images can’t be made with any camera until you first develop the capacity to see. Photographing the Travel Magazine Assignment

Learn first-hand what makes a good and comprehensive photo travel story, from people and culture to food and landscape. More often than not, photographers are only given a few days to capture images for a feature travel story, and it can be difficult to wander through a town or city taking pictures aimlessly and get anything that defines that area in a cohesive group of images. Whether you’re photographing a travel story for yourself, one that you’ll propose to a magazine, or an actual assignment from a magazine, it’s important to define what makes a location visually impressive. We start by reviewing published travel stories that Doug has photographed for various magazines. Then we go over how to research a travel story, how to contact locations, and, crucially, how to schedule a shoot. All of this is combined with taking area-defining photographs in and around Santa Fe and Northern New Mexico. We actually photograph a real travel story for a national magazine during this workshop. New Mexico Magazine is providing participants with an article written by Cheryl Jamison, and it is our job to fulfill the assignment. New Mexico Magazine is publishing select images made during this workshop to accompany the story in an issue later this year.

The beauty of available light is that it is everywhere. Any time of day, any situation, can be a great opportunity to make an interpretive portrait. This workshop is designed to develop your ability to see the quality of light and apply it to real people. We don’t scout locations, we scout light, and then make the location work. The emphasis is on utilizing all of our tools—light, tonality, composition, and color—to state our ideas visually. Through demonstrations, field trips, and personal projects, we explore the realm of existing light: hard, soft, bounced, reflected, and diffused. Alternative Processes Portraits

A great portrait explores gesture and expression. It encapsulates the moment in which both subject and photographer connect. That moment takes on a timeless quality when the portrait comes to life and is created using historical techniques such as albumen, Kallitype, and wet-plate collodion. Our week begins with studying and discussing examples of 19thcentury and contemporary alternative process images, and then focuses on learning techniques for the types of processes participants can create during this workshop. Our days in Santa Fe are filled with making portraits on location—of models and of each other. We then return to The Workshops campus and make digital negatives from our images and transform them into beautiful handmade contact prints on watercolor paper, using a variety of historical techniques including albumen and Kallitype. We also learn how to make wet-plate collodion portraits on glass plates, which can be used on their own, contact printed, or scanned into a computer to make digital negatives. You leave the workshop with a thorough knowledge of these historical processes and a clear perception of how to incorporate them into your own portrait photography. JILL ENFIELD uses historical techniques to enhance the textural and painterly effects of photography. Experimental Digital Printmaking July 22-27

Photography has changed. What used to take hours in the pre-digital world, now may only take seconds. This compression of time offers unexpected benefits to the printmaking process—the ability to integrate manual techniques previously limited to traditional art forms such as painting and drawing. Digital capture, rather than eliminating the hands-on practice of creating imagery, makes it easier and more enjoyable than ever. We start this workshop by finding the sources of our creative inspiration. We examine the importance of pre-visualization and experimentation, especially as they relate to “happy accidents.” We move on to demonstrations of digital workflow, as well as techniques such as compositing, using a scanner as a camera, processing in High Dynamic Range (HDR), and creative uses of layering and blending. Then, we experiment with a wide variety of unusual and highly specialized printmaking processes, including acrylic transfer, encaustic layering, inkAid coating, and using Lazertran decal papers. By incorporating techniques from a variety of disparate artistic disciplines this hands-on printing workshop challenges participants to think outside the usual methodologies. The results are often surprising, inevitably leading the inspired photographer to further experimentation beyond the traditional boundaries of conventional printmaking.

KAREN KUEHN has been a professional photographer for the past 24 years. Her work has appeared in national publications such as TIME, Newsweek, Garage, Reader’s Digest, More, People, and The New York Times. Her corporate clients include MasterCard, Northwest Airlines, Toyota, and Campbell’s. Karen’s portrait work, which ranges from celebrities to the homeless, conveys her natural way of seeing the story within the frame. The Daguerreotype: A Contemporary Approach July 22-27

The daguerreotype was the first successful photographic process, with the discovery being announced in 1839. During the course of this hands-on workshop in Santa Fe, we travel back in time to make use of the same materials and the same techniques in use during the age of the daguerreotype. Come with us on an adventure that starts with the dawn of photography. We cover two methods of exposing the plate. First, we try the traditional method, using the plate in-camera to produce a direct positive. Then we learn about the alternative to “live” exposures: contact printing from a positive transparency. This method can produce an image indistinguishable from an in-camera plate—but with greater control over the film positive, can provide superior results. Along with these methodologies, we learn about the historical context of the daguerreotype, as Jerry presents representative images and relevant information from the 1840s and 1850s. If you shoot with a view camera, bring it along. We use 3x4 inch plates, which fit easily into a 4x5 holder. If you plan to use film, bring your negatives and find out how to produce film positives for the daguerreotype. We also consider how you want to present your finished piece. Matting and framing a daguerreotype deprives it of its charm, so Jerry demonstrates how to make display cases as one of the many possible installation options. Join a contemporary master of the historic daguerreotype in the beautiful setting of Santa Fe and explore the technical and artistic nuances of this time-honored technique.

The dynamic high desert is a magnet for artists eager to record its magnificent forms and light. Motivated by the unique spirit that courses through every aspect of New Mexico, this workshop is for photographers who want to push beyond their current vision, explore photography in new and challenging ways, gain insight into non-traditional methods of working and seeing, and discover creative modes of expanding their personal vision. The week offers classroom time with David that includes a diverse blend of discussions, assignments, critiques and one-on-one sessions. In addition, there are two full-day field trips dedicated to traveling as a group to wild and wonderful locations in Northern New Mexico. On field trips down back roads, we pursue the elusive magic that lies beyond the obvious. Because of the mercurial nature of New Mexico’s weather, David prefers to “chase the light” rather than plan a definite itinerary. We’re given special access to photograph some of the locals David has come to know in his 26 years in Northern New Mexico, finding paths into our subjects’ spirits that allow them to relax, feel safe, and trust us enough to give the gift of a true and honest image. A great fashion photograph, like any other portrait, is most successful when photographer and subject truly connect, creating an energy and experience that goes beyond the technical. In our image-conscious era, photographers must be knowledgeable about fashion, wardrobe, hair, makeup, and lighting, and aware of how the choice of location or studio will define their work. Photographers also need to create a great rapport with subjects and clients alike. Whether you are photographing high fashion, editorial fashion, testing models for your portfolio, or shooting images of your kids, your knowledge of style and your communication skills deepen your work. In this workshop, we review the masters of fashion and portraiture and discuss how their work can inspire our own imagery. Andrew discusses, with demonstrations, his extensive background in and knowledge of fashion portraiture and lighting techniques. As the painter is responsible for every brush stroke on the canvas, the writer for every word on the page, and the musician for every note played, so is the photographer responsible for everything within the frame. In this workshop, we explore the various ways photographers can compose an image “in camera” while photographing it, thereby keeping darkroom and digital manipulation to a minimum. We begin by photographing simple two-dimensional spaces, working with normal to moderately wide-angle focal lengths that approximate our own field of vision. By week’s end, we learn how to design complex three-dimensional scenes, using multiple elements and details that support rather than detract from the subject. We concentrate on the center and edges of the frame, and pay close attention to what we are capturing in the background. Our assignments are enriched by our study of photographers who are renowned for their sense of composition and design. We examine a variety of genres, including location portraits and street photography, landscapes and cityscapes, and static and action scenes. This workshop places its emphasis on the development of creative vision, rather than technical expertise. Norman supports and guides our photographic efforts with group and one-on-one critiques. NORMAN MAUSKOPF has taught and inspired students of all levels during his 30-year career in photography. He has three award-winning books with Twin Palms Publishers, and a fourth book, Descendants, about Northern New Mexico Hispanic culture, was recently published. Welcome to the era of digital imagery, where you have no photos to lose, and so much freedom to gain. Freedom from the shoeboxes and overstuffed file cabinets of unorganized photos. Freedom to make as many images as you want. And the freedom that comes from knowing how Lightroom and Photoshop can work together to get your images organized, make them easy to access and give them that all-important “pop.” This workshop combines field sessions to create new images with classroom time in The Workshops state-of-the-art digital lab. In the lab, we devote the majority of our time to Lightroom, beginning with the powerful organizing and enhancing tools that give us quick, consistent control of our images. We explore Lightroom’s image rating and cataloging tools and learn practical techniques for image enhancement, including synchronizing enhancement settings to apply to multiple images automatically—an efficient tool that will save you hours of computer time. Photoshop steps in when images need further adjustments, retouching, or compositing. Rick explains the integration between Lightroom and Photoshop, the basic retouching tools in Photoshop and how to keep your new changes stored back in Lightroom. Our goal is to streamline our photographic workflow using Lightroom with some Photoshop, and discover how these two applications help minimize the time you spend on your computer and maximize the time you can devote to your true passion—making pictures! A great next step after basic photography is learning how to use color, light, and composition to create outstanding images. Another important component of this workshop is its focus on the artistic use of light, with special emphasis on creative flash techniques. We begin each day by editing and reviewing each other’s photographs. Visual lectures and demonstrations cover digital camera settings, accurate metering and exposure, and the rules of composition. We spend afternoons on field trips in and around Santa Fe, photographing assignments based on topics discussed during morning sessions. These assignments include an on-location session with models, a visit to Abiquiu’s Plaza Blanca (or the “White Place,” made famous in a series of painting by Georgia O’Keeffe), and a trip to the beautiful and historical town of Las Vegas, New Mexico. Raul accompanies the group during these assignments, providing hands-on support and advice. A final lecture on the basics of editing and sequencing your work rounds out your learning experience. The inspiring light, architecture, people, and colors of New Mexico are ever-present, providing the group with endless opportunities for practicing newly acquired skills.

Enjoy a week in beautiful Santa Fe exploring a genre that is both challenging and rewarding: photographing pets on location. In this workshop, we focus on the planning and production of a commissioned pet portrait. Sharing the tricks of the trade, Norah emphasizes the importance of using props, forging a playful connection between photographer and subject, and discerning the all-important details regarding a pet’s behavior and its environment. Most significantly, Norah addresses strategies for solving the unique problems that often arise when dealing with animals during a photography session. Working with a variety of animals, including domestic pets and horses, we learn how to apply the many different techniques that Norah uses as a successful pet photographer. Participants work individually and collectively on daily assignments, followed by group critiques and discussions of lighting, composition, and style. Classroom time also touches on creative approaches to pet portraiture, as well as troubleshooting unexpected technical issues. Assignments include photographing horses on a local ranch, interacting with people and pets in their environments, and creating imagery at a non-profit animal organization. By the end of the week, you acquire a unique set of people and pet skills, and are able to translate those skills into compelling and marketable imagery. Participants have daily opportunities to practice their skills in the studio and around Santa Fe, working first with experienced models and then with complete strangers. Local ranches, the Farmers Market, and the streets of Santa Fe offer ample opportunities to find willing subjects. The ability to engage and build trust is the most important factor in portrait sessions, and Paul works individually with each participant to guide this vital process. There will also be a black-and-white day for those wishing to enhance and strengthen their vision using this iconic art form. The ”soft” techniques required for making compelling portraits are of primary concern, but technical matters are always a consideration. Photography has a way of taking us to our deepest creativity. Most photographers hope that these flashes of creativity will show up at just the right time. But you don’t have to wait for them: you can go looking. Creativity is there all along, and there are ways you can get to it. Over years of teaching and studying, Sean has gathered a series of simple exercises that explore and deepen our creative state through direct experience, and that help to make it available all the time. During this workshop we apply these exercises to daily photographic assignments, giving us the chance to see where our best work really comes from, and how to get at it more fully. In addition, as we expand our seeing and awareness, our pictures begin to change. This is a process that continues long after the workshop is over. Extensive photographic knowledge is not a requirement; you must merely be open to new approaches and possess a desire to pursue to the adventure of seeing. We look with our cameras and our minds. We work deep, wake up, and have fun. We do work that is adventuresome and truly our own, and we prize audacious failures over small, safe successes. Due to the resurgence of handmade photographic prints and the exploding interest in non-traditional techniques, teachers at all levels now have to be knowledgeable in 19th- and 20th-century alternative processes as well as 21st-century digital imaging. This weeklong workshop provides you, the educator, with a sound foundation in techniques and aesthetics of alternative photographic processes, also known as alt pro. Alt pro has many practical applications for students, is educational beyond the realm of photography, and is fun for a diverse population. Michael starts the week with a survey of the history of non-silver photography, then moves into a hands-on exploration of a wide selection of alt pro processes, including cyanotype, Van Dyke, argyrotype, gum bichromate, salted paper process, albumen, and wax and Polaroid transfer processes. We also cover methods for making enlarged negatives: pinhole cameras, film and digital cameras, flatbed scanners, and copy machines. Focusing on the D.I.Y. approach of art making and creative discovery that many artists and educators share, we explore critique methods, discuss curriculum and lesson planning, and expand our knowledge of artists working in Alt Pro by visiting local museums and galleries. The human figure has long been a favorite subject of artists in every medium, including photography. The elements of form, gesture, line, texture, light and shadow, and artistic intention all play vital roles in creating successful figure studies. By placing the human figure into a unique and inspiring landscape, we add the additional element of nature and open up countless new opportunities for exploring these elements. Developing a personal vision and point of view is a goal of this works hop. In daily field sessions, we learn how to work with models in a professional manner and learn to establish a rhythm to the session that encourages artistic feedback and active participation from the model. Classroom time is devoted to discussions, critiques of the previous day’s images, and one-on-one reviews. Participants are grouped into teams of three, and work with one model at a time. Individual attention is a driving concept behind the workshop, and during each cycle Allen spends time with each photographer, answering questions, and making suggestions. In addition to onsite input, there are daily critiques for fine-tuning your vision. Allen covers how to get proper exposures outdoors, how to create dynamic compositions, and how to balance message and aesthetics in one image. Importantly, he also shares his insights on establishing a strong working relationship with models and creating the environment of trust, mutual respect, and collaboration that allows great figure studies to emerge.

This start-from-scratch workshop takes you, the beginning photographer, from the basics of proper exposure to the ultimate goal of creating more compelling photographs. Over the course of a week, you build a solid technical foundation that enables you to make the photographs you have always wanted to make. You learn to be comfortable with your camera by understanding manual modes of exposure, the manipulation of depth of field, and the ground rules for using specific shutter speeds. Subsequent discussions cover such topics as focus, composition, lenses, natural light, and complex lighting situations. Sarah has you on the move throughout the workshop, practicing new skills daily during field trips in and around historic and picturesque Santa Fe. David guides us through the finer points of career choices, evaluating the relative merits of the freelance path versus the in-house photography position and helping us learn how to identify prospective clients and meet their needs. In the ever-changing world of photography, we remain fascinated with ourselves and our fellow human beings. If you’ve always wanted to photograph people but have been hesitant to try—or simply wish to improve your skills—this workshop is for you. We focus on the two main categories of photographing people: portraits and candids. The Portrait: A photographic portrait can convey the truest aspect of the human condition. The best ones capture shared humanity while portraying individual uniqueness. Learn how to engage both strangers and friends, how to create a collaborative partnership with your subjects, and how to incorporate gesture and background—all in the service of creating an engaging, unified, and memorable portrait. The Candid: The candid photograph is the polar opposite of the portrait. Here you are an observer, remaining as inconspicuous as possible. Instead of slowly building a rapport with one individual, you must act with speed and precision to reveal the tapestry of a singular, distinctive moment. We explore the art of street photography, learning to react decisively to the unexpected as it occurs. In both areas we discover techniques for increasing concentration and awareness, working with intent and proficiency. You come away with new skills and confidence in photographing people, providing a springboard for further exploration. John Weiss studied photography at M.I.T. and earned his MFA at RISD. As head of photography at the University of Delaware, John received his university’s Excellence in Teaching Award and was also named Teacher of the Year by the Santa Fe Center for Photography. While the traditional photographic image captures reflected light, infrared (IR) photography captures invisible light—infrared radiation, to be exact. There are many practical applications for IR photography, including criminology, photomicrography, and celestial photography. IR images are otherworldly, surreal, and dream-like, offering never-ending surprises, and this four-day workshop focuses on the creative aspects that have intrigued and fascinated photographers for decades. If you are searching for a new creative outlet, IR is an effective vehicle for expanding the range of your artistic vision. Working with digital point-and-shoot cameras or digital SLRs, we take a journey into the technical and aesthetic aspects of the magical world of digital infrared photography, learning to see in IR and discovering the best ways of recording the IR spectrum. Daily field sessions in the stunning New Mexico light provide myriad opportunities for photographing landscapes, architecture, people, and animals. Back in the classroom, Dottie demonstrates techniques for enhancing and adjusting IR images with Adobe Photoshop and Nik Software. Adobe Lightroom Intensive: Organizing and Enhancing Your Images August 24-26

Adobe Lightroom is an incredibly powerful tool for photographers of all levels. In this two-and-a-half day intensive you learn the ins-and-outs of proper Lightroom workflow to help you strengthen and streamline your photographic output. Will begins by explaining how Lightroom handles files, then takes us through importing and organizing image files from our cameras and hard drives. Lightroom’s powerful organizational tools make it possible to sort through thousands of images with ease, and a principal goal of this workshop is to teach you how to navigate this program’s essential element. Using Lightroom’s system of Collections, Keywords, Flags, Stars, and Color Labels, you gain a solid understanding of how to simply manage photographs stored on your home computers. From organization we move onto Lightroom’s powerful developing tools. Using the Develop module, we make adjustments ranging from correcting exposure to creating vignetting, in order to enhance the quality of our images. Will also demonstrates how to synchronize Develop settings across groups of images in order to streamline your workflow. We wrap up by learning how to export images for print or web viewing. After a quick review of the skills that were covered, you’re equipped to get the most out of your digital images using Adobe Lightroom at home. Although the digital revolution has given the creative photographer more tools and options for capturing and enhancing the monochromatic image, none can be employed as a substitute for the unequaled ability of the human mind to visualize the potential in a subject—whether it be a portrait, documentary statement, or landscape. During these five days, working with the uniquely inspiring resources of Santa Fe and nearby attractions, we explore the play of light on natural colors, forms, and textures. We practice interpreting familiar hues with more subjective shadings of black and white, to express qualities capable of evoking positive viewer response. We learn to previsualize images, properly expose for the final outcome, and use our in-camera tools, computer software, and printing technology to turn our visualizations into powerful images that match the inspiration we felt at the moment of capture. The workshop provides ample on-location opportunities for making portraits, landscapes, architectural details, or documentary studies. It also includes one-on-one conferences with David, lab instruction, and time for printing, demonstrations, discussions, image evaluations, and portfolio reviews. Intensive: Time-Lapse Photography September 1-3

Time-lapse sequences are an exciting way to add motion content to your photography skills. When stills are taken over a long period of time and played back at a faster rate, time speeds up and a dynamic new medium unfolds. In this fast-paced, two-and-a-half day intensive we use still images from our digital cameras and explore the endless subject possibilities and uses of time-lapse movies. We start with looking at the many uses of time-lapse sequences. We then learn how to set up our digital cameras, use an intervalometer to time the image sequences, and pick the right interval for different subjects. After recording our first images, we use Adobe Lightroom to import, adjust, and export them. Next, we bring everything into QuickTime Pro to assemble the initial movie and move it to iMovie to add titles and other effects. We head outdoors to grab additional footage and record audio in the field with portable digital stereo recorders before returning to The Workshops state-of-the-art digital lab to complete the process. The next step is importing our audio into GarageBand and sweetening the sound with editing and layering techniques. We combine the audio with your new iMovie and take time to view and critique your finished project. Finally, we upload your movies to YouTube or Vimeo so others can see them—and collapse in happy exhaustion! Blue Fier specializes in the vigorous field of location photography. He has photographed advertising campaigns for major corporations, creating images of people and products in exotic environments. Blue feels his MA and MFA degrees in art have given him a classic yet unique perspective. His years of creating order out of chaos have lead to his recently published book, Composition Photo Workshop, which has been translated into Spanish, Czech, Polish, and Mandarin Chinese. Authenticity is the single most important attribute a photographer can learn and possess. Not only is it a process of working from within, but it can also eventually lead to the creation of the masterpiece. This workshop explores the perceptual and technical processes involved in authenticity. Typically, photographers practice their craft without giving enough thought to vision, awareness, and the basic fundamental technical aspects that cause the effects they create. In contrast, the process of authenticity deals directly with the fundamentals of creating an image, by enabling photographers to work directly from their unique nature, rather than photographing derivatively. George starts by reviewing the fundamentals of “photographic seeing,” and the skills necessary to accomplish it. Next, we examine the basic technical problems that hound us when we are making images, both in photographing a subject and in post-processing. Lastly, we study and practice a way to free ourselves from the concepts and styles of other photographers. The simple answer to a creative life in photography is emptying yourself of all unnecessary impediments, and seeing the world as if only the wind had blown that way before. This intensive starts you toward accomplishing this goal by freeing you from entrenched rules of composition, foundational technical problems, and unproductive behaviors. George DeWolfe is an award-winning photographer whose career spans more than 40 years. A student of Ansel Adams and Minor White, George studied perception with Dr. Richard Zakia and earned an MFA in photography and graphic art from the Rochester Institute of Technology. His commercial clients include APC, Eastman Kodak, and Sears. He has published three books: At Home in the Wild, George DeWolfe’s Digital Fine Print Workshop, and B&W Printing. Exceptional Portraits September 10-14

Delve into an extremely creative, intuitive realm of hands-on portraiture that goes beyond mere technical expertise to capture the emotional spirit of subjects. On location and in the classroom, Jock demonstrates ways to approach the human portrait to incorporate not only character but emotion, too. We explore—on location and in historic Santa Fe—the concepts of human relationships, risk-taking, emotion, and creativity. Under Jock’s guidance, we practice illuminating humanity, connecting with one another, and getting inside the “cultural bubble.” We examine self-trust and how our fears affect the creative process. We learn about and use the emotion of light, the difference between seeing and looking, intuitive composition, and making intentional mistakes. Jock also introduces the “quick sketch” technique, which enables us to shape the creative intent while being open to capturing the moment. Throughout the week, we use combinations of flash and available light to take in the remarkable and colorful surroundings of Santa Fe, our backdrop for making portraits. We also go on location to the New Mexico State Fair and rodeo, as well as local ranches. Participants willing to share and be open to feedback from group discussions, critiques, and individual time with Jock take portraiture to a new level. The Black-and-White Master Print September 10-14

A masterpiece is the product of an artist’s individual authentic genius. That authenticity forms presence, the result of light working on form. An examination of the great master painters and photographers reveals that this relationship—light on form creating presence—is the key element of a genuine masterpiece. This workshop lays out the perceptual and technical skills necessary to practice and create presence. We begin with a detailed study of presence in Old Master paintings and photographs. Then we head out on location to make our photographs, applying the perceptual and photographic skills necessary to achieve presence. Back in The Workshops state-of-the-art digital lab, we learn about perceptual correction skills and image manipulation tools. For simplicity, we use no more than five specifically relevant tools—our emphasis is on the organic process of perception and presence, not the complexities of imaging tools and techniques. We complete the workshop by printing inkjet photographs that reveal the presence we have given life to in our images. This is an opportunity for photographers to hone their perceptual skills, while learning how to use a minimal number of highly effective tools to create the essential element of presence.

Route 66 Photo Adventure: Capture to Print September 18-22

Take the off ramp into a bygone era of Route 66 in New Mexico, and see how America traveled from 1926 up to the 1960’s. Our photographic journey takes us to the intact and off-the-beaten-path locations where we discover wonderful old Route 66 trading posts, filling stations, diners, tourist traps, vintage cars, and ghost towns, all along the scenic “Mother Road.” We begin at the heart of Route 66 in Albuquerque exploring both the new and vintage sites along the famous Central Avenue. For the next two days, we continue our road trip, traveling past the Texas state line to Adrian, the midway point of Route 66. We work to hone our travel photography skills and our personal style and our schedule includes field demonstrations and individual reviews of work in progress. On Saturday morning, we return to Santa Fe along the pre-1937 route. The remainder of our time is spent editing, processing, and printing our images in The Workshops state-of-the-art digital lab. The often-romanticized Route 66 inspires in many of us a nostalgic tug at something buried deep within us. The Mother Road is a unique experience, a feeling, a perception, a taste of sight and sound, and a photo journey not to be missed.

There is no better place to study the interplay of light and land than the exquisite high desert of Santa Fe. And with the inspiring light and landscapes of Northern New Mexico beckoning, rest assured this workshop is first and foremost about photographing. Mark takes us to a wide variety of locations, where we concentrate on working with the light to make a great subject stand out. We visit those locations multiple times to study the effects that different times of day—and different types of weather—have on our subjects. We go to at least one of our chosen spots at night to take advantage of New Mexico’s clear, starry skies, using this special time to examine one of the more unusual aspects of high desert light. Our classroom time is spent reviewing images and reinforcing learned techniques, such as how to utilize different types of light and effectively post-process those images, with a special emphasis on the night exposures. We practice pre-visualization and strengthen our compositional skills by learning how to read our images, breaking them down into regions to post-process different areas separately. We also work in Adobe Lightroom and pick up some helpful Adobe Photoshop techniques. Guided by Mark’s expertise on location, we deeply examine the role of light in turning a good image into a truly outstanding image.

Mexican author Juan Rulfo wrote: “A landscape is not just the description of what our eyes see but rather the revelation of what lies behind visual appearances. A landscape never refers only to itself but to something else, something beyond—a metaphysics, a religion, a conception of humanity or of the cosmos.” He’s right. Your landscape photography expresses who you are and what you really care about. It is an interpretation of the world and, at its best, an intensely personal interpretation. But how do you get there? There is no simple formula, but there is a two-part path. One part is mastering the craft (nowadays, this encompasses digital photo techniques) and, in the process, honing and refining your own graphic and photographic style. The other part is connecting with your subject matter. Whether this is a landscape, a specific physical place, or a landscape theme, it should be something that moves you deeply, something you simply have to photograph. We follow both paths, photographing intriguing places in great New Mexico light, and—even more important—critiquing and discussing your photographic journey. Your goal is to create not just a random assortment of good images but a cohesive group of photos that allows you to delve deeper into landscape. Linde Waidhofer sees photography as a passion as well as a profession. The author of seven fine-art books of landscape photography, she is a long-time instructor for The Workshops and a regular contributor to Outdoor Photographer magazine. Linde’s latest photographic adventure is an ongoing visual exploration of Patagonia, a South American region of incredible beauty that is relatively unknown and seldom photographed. Hand-coloring is as old as photography itself. In the 19th century, color tinting was applied to early black-and-white prints to make them more closely resemble reality; it was the advent of color films in the 1950s that took photographic hand-coloring techniques into the realm of interpretive artistic expression, which is where it lives today. Applied color has become a way for photographers to communicate their feelings, not just simply a means of creating another color image. Kate introduces you to the materials and techniques of hand-coloring while inspiring you to experiment with your own creative process. You start with traditional silver-based or digitally output prints and then apply a variety of paints, pigments, pencils, and inks to extend the photographic image and produce the effects you are want. The possibilities are limited only by your imagination. “Photography is magic in its own mysterious, chemical way,” Kate says, “but I love pigment—the color, the smell, the whole tactile thing.” Spend a week exploring the fine-art possibilities of the hand-colored image with a modern-day master.

The goal of this legendary workshop—rarely offered and always sold out— is to help serious photographers, both professional and amateurs, jumpstart the process of taking their work to the next level. It is designed to motivate by identifying obstacles, clarifying work, and taking the steps necessary to revitalize careers and promote richer photographic lives. Working with renowned photographer and teacher Sam Abell, participants edit their existing portfolios and generate new work. In addition to an intensive daily program of editing and photographic assignments, our schedule includes in-depth, one-on-one and group portfolio sessions with Sam as well as field trips into the compelling cultural landscape of New Mexico. Learn how your words can add power and meaning to your photography. All photographers can benefit from the ability to write about themselves and their work. This workshop is for photographers who want to express themselves through the written word, be it for use on web sites, in print publications, or to pitch their work for exhibition. It’s also the perfect workshop for those who simply want to explore ways to articulate their photographic aspirations and accomplishments. During the course of the workshop, we look at books and web sites and take field trips to the Photo-Eye bookstore and galleries in Santa Fe. In the classroom we look at successful (and unsuccessful) relationships between photographs and texts and show how carefully chosen words can bring insight and public awareness to your work. There is more than one way to write beautifully—we involve ourselves with various options for writing about your own images. Plan to bring approximately 50 photographs for discussion. In one-on-one conversations with Leah and Sam we reduce the number to approximately ten. We discuss your personal writing goals and we work with you as you apply them to your selected photographs. By the end of the workshop, you have a simple, to-the-point biography, along with concrete descriptions of photographs and projects. In addition to being practical, this workshop will be lighthearted and fun (not ponderous and intimidating!).

Now that you have learned the basics of your camera, it is time to tackle available light and your flash equipment—sometimes called speedlites, off-camera flashes, or small strobes. When we as photographers start to take control and gain hands-on, practical experience, it becomes time to take the camera off auto-mode and start managing the balance between available light and flash. At first encounter, speedlites, with all their bells and whistles, can seem like technical monsters. But as we explore our flashes on manual mode, the control of light begins to make sense and, at the same time, stimulates our imagination. Understanding and exploring lighting can give you consistent control over the “feeling” of your images. Our focus is on the color, quality, and direction of light. We use available light and flash to enhance what we see and what we want to capture with our cameras. In addition, we use these tools to express ourselves creatively. Daily assignments and two evening sessions photographing in Santa Fe are a part of our planned activities. The atmosphere in this four-day workshop is one of exploration, practice, and play. Infrared photography is a way of creating images using the invisible infrared light that strikes your subject. Long-time infrared experimenter Nevada Wier calls it “invisible poetry,” because in the process of studying this technique, you move beyond your usual methods of photographing and discover a new way of seeing the world. Infrared is not only ideal for creating dreamy, surreal landscapes, but it’s also lovely for portrait and still life photography. Infrared photography in the digital age is light years ahead of its film counterpart. Two factors have led to this unique niche becoming more accessible: first, the use of digital cameras that have been converted to render infrared light and, second, new digital workflow protocols. In this two-and-a-half day intensive, Nevada introduces you to digital infrared photography. Using converted cameras and Adobe software, you learn the ins and outs of photographing and processing your images. After getting comfortable with the technique, you move into the creative and experimental side of making images with the infrared spectrum. Historic Santa Fe, the neighboring town of Nambé, and the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta provide us with dramatic locations for our infrared explorations. Intensive: Blurb Bookmaking November 27-29

Spend two-and-a-half fast-paced days in Santa Fe with one goal in mind: creating your own photographic book. We delve into the exciting and rapidly expanding world of custom printed books using Blurb’s BookSmart software. Each participant brings 20 to 30 images from one body of work, such as a personal project or a commercial venture, and learns how to edit, sequence, and lay out a beautiful and stylish photo book that can be ordered online, on demand. We explore all the capabilities of BookSmart in depth, and Susan explains Blurb’s new Color Managed Workflow options. We also investigate Blurb’s ImageWrap feature, the option of dust jackets, and how to enhance static templates with Blurb’s Edit Layout feature. For inspiration and design ideas, we examine books previously published with Blurb, as well as traditionally published books. Eddie Soloway’s “Natural Eye” workshop series in our country’s beautiful urban parks makes its summer stop in Chicago’s Millennium Park. Peru: Lost City of the Incas and Machu Picchu August 25-September 3

Nothing you may have read, no photographs or films you may have seen, can prepare you for the awe-inspiring moment when you visit Machu Picchu for the first time. It is a miraculous place, charged with the grandeur of more than six centuries of history and the legend of the Incas. We spend parts of three days on site, walking ancient pathways, surrounded by an astonishing visual landscape. We journey through the Sacred Valley, where we visit a grammar school set against a backdrop of the snow-capped Andes. In the nearby village of Willoq, we observe local craftswomen weaving their colorful textiles. We photograph in traditional outdoor markets and visit a private home to celebrate the festival of Mother Earth. Before sharing lunch with a local family, we participate in a sacred blessing conducted by a shaman. This travel workshop with John Weiss is a rare opportunity to witness Peruvian traditions from the inside. We photograph a wide array of locations—outdoor markets full of life and color, an Andean school, a women’s weaving cooperative, and more. The spirit of the Incans remains palpable and alluring. The Oregon Coast July 18-22

The entire Oregon coast is magnificent and beautiful. All sorts of superlatives can be used to describe it, but none really capture how pretty it actually is. Newport, on the mid-Oregon coast, is a particularly perfect spot for a photographic workshop. It’s easy to get to, it has good places to eat and stay, and there are more nearby places to take pictures, with more variety, than almost any other place on the west coast. There are two lighthouses, tidal pools to explore with your camera, sea stacks to fit into your compositions, and miles-long beaches with pounding surf. To top it off there is an active harbor full of picturesque fishing boats, stacks of colorful crab pots, and piles and piles of brightly colored ropes and nets. All within walking distance of our hotel. Photos of the harbor at twilight (usually foggy this time of year) are breathtaking. And we even spend a morning at the Oregon Coast Aquarium photographing breeding puffins, red and green anenomes, golden and glowing jellyfish, seastars, and even adorable sea otters. This is one of David’s favorite places to photograph and to teach. He comes here every year because it is such a productive place to photograph. It is also a great place to simply explore and enjoy. David Middleton is a professional outdoor photographer, writer and naturalist. During his 20-year career, he has traveled extensively throughout the United States, Canada, Central and South America, South Africa, and Australia. A contributing editor of Outdoor Photographer, David’s photography and writing have been featured in many magazines, books and calendars. Situated in the rain shadow of the Indian Himalaya, Ladakh occupies the westernmost edge of the Tibetan Plateau. Millenia-old traditions of Tibetan Buddhism have thrived here without the interruption or repression found in Tibet iteself. In Ladakh, Buddhist culture is alive and well—and vibrantly displayed through the dozens of spectacular monasteries, frequent festivals, and warmhearted, open nature of the Ladakhi people. On our Ladakh adventure we will traverse an amazing range of landscapes: wind-swept desert and sand dunes, brilliantly colored rock formations, lush valleys and immmense sapphire-colored lakes. These awe-inspiring vistas are dotted with traditional villages and ancient monasteries, which we explore both by road and on foot. This journey is a true adventure and a photographer’s paradise. There is an optional post-Ladakh extension to visit Agra and the Taj Mahal. Fall Colors in Vermont October 10-14

Few places in the world are more spectacular than Vermont in October. The landscape is awash with reds, oranges, and golds as trees, vines, meadows, and late flowers shout for a photographer’s attention. This workshop takes place in the heart of the state near Manchester, where David lives and photographs. We visit David’s favorite places, including tumbling streams, quiet lakes, rolling hills, and quaint villages. As a special treat, David takes us to the 250-year-old hill farm that he has been exclusively photographing for several years. Almost a square mile in size, the farm is a photographer’s dream, with beautiful old barns, calves and yearlings, wild meadows and woods, an old sugarhouse, miles of stone walls, and pastures lined with colorful sugar maples. We have complete access to photograph whatever strikes our fancy. NEW The Best of Turkey – A Photographic and Cultural Exploration

October 4-15 If you have never been to Turkey, the warmth of the Turkish people will amaze you. The architecture in the cities is truly awe-inspiring, and in the countryside you are welcomed into Turkish homes, served tea or baklava at any moment. We photograph in some of Turkey’s most visually exciting places. In the alluring city of Istanbul, we discover where the treasures of the Silk and Spice routes met their markets. Istanbul is also the site of Hagia Sophia (Temple of Wisdom), the Blue Mosque, the Topkapi Palace of famous harems, and the fabulous Spice and Grand Bazaars. Ephesus, the best-preserved classical city in the eastern Mediterranean, is the place to get a feel for what life was like in Roman times. The iconic ruins, photographed in soft light at dawn and dusk, are stunning. We also visit artisan villages in the surrounding countryside, photographing workers and their families. Autumn on the Coast of Maine October 17-21

Maine’s Mount Desert Island, the home of Acadia National Park, is a photographer’s playground. It boasts the East Coast’s highest mountains as well as its only true fjord. The island also offers stunning, easily accessible rocky coastlines, lovely traditional harbors, dazzling forest-edged lakes and ponds, a magnificent lighthouse, and historic carriage roads that wind through colorful woods. All of this scenery is packed onto an island that takes only a few hours to drive around. Timed to coincide with the peak of fall colors on the Maine coast, this workshop is based in the picturesque village of Bar Harbor. Our schedule includes capturing both sunrise and sunset from the top of Cadillac Mountain, photographing the forest and reflections of Jordan and Bubble ponds, driving the famed Ocean Road, and wandering the quaint villages of Bernard, Southwest Harbor, and Somersville. The close proximity of all our photo destinations affords us plenty of time for image reviews and critiques. A Natural Eye: Ghost Ranch, New Mexico Eddie Soloway takes his popular “Natural Eye” workshop on the road, this time to northern New Mexico’s historic Ghost Ranch. Burma is one of those few remaining, magical places that feels overlooked by the modern world. The country is steeped in an amazingly rich history, and graced with a vibrant, living religion that permeates every aspect of daily life. Visualize yourself in Africa, at a private game preserve between Mts. Kilimanjaro and Meru. Herds of elephant, impala, zebra, and wildebeest graze near the permanent tented guest retreat at Ndarakwai, home base for this incredible journey. With diverse habitats from riparian woodland to acacia savannah, the 11,000-acre preserve affords opportunities to make stunning photographs that capture the essence of Africa. Veteran workshop instructors Jennifer Spelman and Renie Haiduk return to Tanzania to lead a small group on an intensive photo excursion of landscape, people and wildlife. Unlike tourist safaris, this is an opportunity for dedicated imagemaking—in the right light, supported by drivers trained to assist photographers. Land Cruisers with ample space for our intimate group give us the flexibility to follow wildlife off-road, with the option for night drives. OVERVIEW OF SKILL LEVELS AND EXPERIENCE

The Workshops welcomes all levels of photographers, from beginners to professionals. We want to make sure you find the workshop tailored to your interests and skill levels, so we collaborated with our instructors to provide the info you need to make an informed decision. Each workshop description indicates who it is designed for (Who Should Attend), the technical skills participants are expected to have (What You Should Know), special details for that workshop (Special Notes), and if an image submission is required for acceptance (Portfolio).

Who Should Attend Four photography levels help identify the appropriate workshops for you: Beginners, Amateurs, Advanced Amateurs, and Professionals. BEGINNERS have little to no experience with digital cameras, photography, or image editing software. AMATEURS have been photographing for a while, have a working knowledge of the basic features on their cameras, and are familiar with digital workflow and image editing software. ADVANCED AMATEURS have a working knowledge of manual mode on their cameras, have a working knowledge of digital workflow and image editing software, and are familiar with artificial lighting, digital printing, or other techniques as required in a particular workshop. PROFESSIONALS earn a majority of their income from their photography, have a substantial body of work, and are proficient in all aspects of photography, as required in a particular workshop.

Regardless of your photographic skills, all participants are expected to have a working knowledge of how to use a laptop computer. For more information about manual mode, Adobe Photoshop knowledge, digital SLR guidelines, and computer requirements, see the Digital Capture and Equipment section below.

What You Should Know

We want to make sure that you feel confident working not only with your instructor, but also with other participants. The desire of staff, instructors, and participants alike is to maintain a consistent level of photographic proficiency in every workshop. Since each workshop has a unique set of technical skills, there are three standard phrases to indicate expected knowledge. FAMILIARITY: You have a basic understanding WORKING KNOWLEDGE: You are competent and can navigate comfortably PROFICIENCY: You have in-depth experience and are a high-end user As an example, you might see: Working knowledge of your digital SLR camera; familiarity with digital workflow and Adobe Photoshop.

Special Notes This area indicates unique details about a particular workshop. It is typically used to communicate special technology information, such as computer workstations provided to participants for workshops held in the digital lab.

PORTFOLIOS

Our sincerest desire is to maintain a consistent level of photographic proficiency, therefore many workshops for Advanced Amateurs and Professionals require a portfolio submission prior to acceptance. Your application and deposit will reserve a space in the workshop of your choice, but you are not officially accepted into a workshop that requires a portfolio until we review appropriate samples of your photography. Images are reviewed by The Workshops staff. If we do not feel that your choice is appropriate, we will call you and discuss other possibilities. If you choose not to transfer to a suggested alternate workshop, we will refund the deposit, less the $45 application fee. After applying for the workshop, submit your images using the following guidelines:

Portfolio Requirements SUBMIT TWENTY PHOTOGRAPHS: Viewing a personal web site or images submitted via email are the preferred method of submission. To submit slides or printed materials please call (505) 983-1400, ext. 11.

Digital Guidelines

• Images should be formatted as 72 dpi JPEGs at 5" x 7" • Images can be sent via email to portfolio@santafeworkshops.com • Images on a CD/DVD must include your contact information on the label, and filenames must include your first and last name

DIGITAL CAPTURE and EQUIPMENT

Digital SLRs and laptops are required for most workshops, unless otherwise noted in the workshop description. You are expected to have a working knowledge of downloading images from your camera to the laptop, organizing files using your image editing software, and selecting images for critique. The only exceptions are for participants in beginning workshops with Rick Allred, Jennifer Spelman and Sarah Meghan Lee. The following indicates the minimum equipment requirements all participants should bring (computer workstations are provided for workshops in the digital lab):

Computer Equipment

• Mac or PC laptop computer with up-to-date operating system (OSX, WinXP or later); iPads are not recommended as an alternative to laptops due to their limited functionality for photo management and processing • Minimum 1.33 GHz processor (processing speed should meet or exceed specifications of your image editing software) • 2 GB or more of RAM • Minimum of 15-20 GB of free hard drive space • Mouse and mouse pad (highly recommended, not required) • Power adapters, battery, and cables for laptop • External hard drive and/or blank CDs/DVDs for backing-up images • Current version of image editing software such as Adobe Photoshop with Bridge, Aperture, Lightroom, or Photo Mechanic. The Workshops staff is most familiar with Lightroom and Photoshop with Bridge.

Manual Mode on Your Camera

Working knowledge of your camera in manual mode means that you are capable and comfortable with evaluating your in-camera light meter and choosing the appropriate manual settings. The following statements can help determine your comfort level with manual mode: • You have a working knowledge of aperture priority, shutter priority, and manual mode, and understand the difference between each setting. • You understand how to adjust the aperture and shutter speed to control the light your camera captures. • You understand that in order to maintain the correct exposure, as aperture becomes larger, shutter speed becomes faster.

Working Knowledge of Adobe Photoshop

Designed for Amateurs, Advanced Amateurs, and Professionals, the nonbeginning Photoshop workshops require a certain level of proficiency on the computer and in Photoshop. Please ensure you have a working knowledge of the following skills.

The Workshops is pleased to offer two discount opportunities.

Next Generation

Intended to instill a passion for photography in the younger generation. Any parent or grandparent who attends a four or more day-long workshop in Santa Fe receives a $250 credit for their child or grandchild to attend during the same week. This discount may not be combined with any other discount or scholarship program. Other restrictions may apply.

Frequent Photographer

Offered to participants who take two or more four or more day-long workshops in Santa Fe during the same calendar year. A 10 percent discount will be applied to the tuition of the lower-priced workshop(s). This discount may not be combined with any other discount or scholarship program. Other restrictions may apply.

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR WORKSHOPS IN SANTA FE

Santa Fe Photographic Workshops is committed to creating opportunities for photographers of all ages and skill levels. We offer a total of 12 scholarships, $1,000 each— four awarded by Nikon and eight by The Workshops—per calendar year. The $1,000 scholarships are provided as credit towards tuition and fees for the recipient’s workshop of choice, subject to portfolio approval. Please see the Scholarships section under General Info/Information for Applicants on our web site.

CANCELLATIONS* Workshops in the Continental U.S.

We rely on your attendance to make important arrangements, so if for any reason you need to withdraw, please notify us 30 days or more before the start date of your workshop. At that time we will refund your deposit by check, less a $125 cancellation fee. If notification of cancellation is made 15 to 30 days before the start of the workshop, we must retain the $300 deposit. If cancellation of on-campus housing is made 15 to 30 days prior to the start of the workshop, we retain the $100 housing deposit. If notification of cancellation is made less than 15 days before the start of the workshop, we must retain the entire balance paid. Santa Fe Photographic Workshops reserves the right to cancel a reservation if full payment has not been received by 15 days before the start of the workshop. any fees will be made for withdrawal after the workshop begins. Santa Fe Photographic Workshops is not responsible for cancellations due to medical emergencies. We highly recommend purchasing travel insurance. In the event that a workshop must be cancelled due to inadequate enrollment, all fees and deposits are refunded in full or may be transferred to another workshop within 12 months. Santa Fe Photographic Workshops is not responsible for reimbursement of non-refundable airline tickets in the event of a workshop cancellation. TRANSFERS*

If for any reason you wish to transfer to a different workshop, please notify us at least 30 days (60 days for workshops outside the U.S.) before the start of the workshop you wish to withdraw from. You may only make one transfer at a charge of $30. We reserve the right to allow or disallow any transfer. You must register and complete a new workshop within 12 months of the withdrawal. There are no exceptions to our Cancellation and Transfer Policy for workshops, inside or outside the continental U.S. *NOTE: Unless otherwise indicated, Around the World workshops are not managed through Santa Fe Photographic Workshops. Whether you are traveling to Santa Fe or Around the World*, we strongly recommend that you purchase travel insurance to protect yourself against unforeseen circumstances that might prevent your attendance. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What is the difference between workshop “seasons?”

We refer to three different “seasons” at The Workshops. In 2012, the “photography seasons” are March 7 to March 31, 2012 (Spring), June 24 to August 10 (Summer), and September 23 to October 5 (Fall). During photography seasons there is a mandatory meal plan for all participants, optional housing on campus, and optional breakfast on campus. Aside from these major differences, there are also instructor presentations, group dinners, and participant image presentations. The “off season” is the rest of the year. Digital workshops are scheduled during many of these off weeks, but may be the only class on campus. Consequently, many amenities of the photography season are not available; for example, on-campus housing is limited and no meals are served.

What is meant by a sample of work for those workshops requiring a portfolio?

Some workshops require that you submit a sample of recent photography for final admission. For complete details, visit the Portfolios section in the General Info/Information for Applicants section on our web site.

Why do I have to pay an application fee?

The application fee of $45 per calendar year is mandatory for every participant. This fee helps cover administrative costs of your registration. Most educational institutions charge such a fee.

Why is sales tax charged?

The State of New Mexico requires all businesses to collect gross receipts tax on all goods and services. In order to not pay tax, you or your company must register for tax exempt status with the State of New Mexico and pay the annual fee. The tax rate as of January 1, 2012 is 8.1875%.

Why is there sometimes a mandatory meal plan and sometimes not?

What can my family do while I am in class?

Keep in mind that you will be very busy with your workshop. Your family might not see a lot of you! Still, Santa Fe is a major tourist destination and there are many things to do in and around Santa Fe. Are there any scholarships available?

The Workshops offers two scholarship programs: one for workshops January through May and one for workshops June through December. For complete details, visit the Scholarship information page on The Workshops web site.

What happens if I need to cancel a workshop?

We know that unexpected things come up that might require you to cancel your workshop. If at all possible, let us know more than 30 days before the start of your workshop. See page 74, or visit our web site, for full details about our Cancellation and Transfer Policies. We also recommend that you consider purchasing travel insurance.

What is Travel Insurance and should I buy it?

How many people will be in my workshop?

All workshops held in the digital lab take a maximum of 12 participants. Nearly all photography workshops have a maximum of 14 participants. The minimum number of participants to run a workshop varies from workshop to workshop, depending on a variety of factors. In the event that a workshop must be canceled due to inadequate enrollment, all fees and deposits are refunded in full or may be transferred to another workshop within 12 months. The Workshops makes final decisions about the running of a workshop no less than 30 days before the begin date.

Will I have much free time during my workshop?

Days are busy and intense. You may find some time in the early evening to see the city. We suggest coming in a few days early or staying a few days after your workshop if you would like to take in the sights of Santa Fe, including the great museums, restaurants, and galleries.

Where should I stay while in Santa Fe?

Please read the about on-campus and Santa Fe accommodations in the General Information section on pages 71-72 or on our web site.

Do I really need to rent a car? A car is not a requirement for certain workshops if you are staying at The Workshops campus. While these participants do not necessarily need a car, a car provides added freedom and flexibility. If you do not rent a car, you will need to car pool with other workshop participants when you go on field trips. Please call to find out if a car is required for your workshop. If you are not staying on campus, you really need to have a car. Santa Fe is not readily accessible by city bus or taxi, although both are available.

What is the weather like in Santa Fe?

Santa Fe is located at 7,000 feet above sea level in the Sangre de Cristo mountains; it can take your body a day of two to adapt to the high altitude. Santa Fe is comfortably dry but can have rapid weather changes. It is common to have 30-degree temperature differences between night
