For the first time ever, join Santa Fe College for Kids, First Lego League (FLL) team! Our coach is a past judge with 5 years of experience teaching with LEGO® MINDSTORMS® Ev3 robots. This year’s 30th anniversary theme is “INTO ORBIT”. You will be competing to design and create something to help our future astronauts, as well as program and build a robot to overcome a series of exciting space

Students will learn about robots and what it takes to control them. Working in pairs, students will learn to program the Lego Mindstorms EV3 robot to perform precise maneuvers, use sensors to interact with its world and use additional servo motors to perform complex tasks. This introduction to Robotics class will focus on design and customization with an emphasis on programming fundamentals.

Horseback Riding Lessons

In the first few lessons, riders will have the opportunity to interact with their horses on the ground. You’ll learn the basics of grooming/ tacking, and learn to ride in a structured and fun environment. Become a confident, safe rider and handler of horses under the professional training of Madonna Bynum. All riding levels are welcome.

Beginner Horseback Made EasyTrail Riding

Learn to trail ride horses in an easy‑going learning environment, and gain fitness benefits. Class will culminate with a trail ride to a nearby wildlife management area cooperative. This is a beginner’s class so no previous experience or knowledge is needed. Facility horses are provided.

Expanded! Fossils Into Gems

Our world is full of fossilized materials from millions of years ago. This course will introduce cabbers to the wide variety of these materials, such as petrified wood, fossil shells, corals, bones, even dino poop! NEW! Advanced cutting techniques: Withlacoochee coral. Prerequisite: Introduction to Cabbing or previous experience cutting cabochons. Class taught by instructors from the Gainesville Gem and Mineral Society in conjunction with The Tech Toybox.

Introduction To Cabbing

Learn how to turn a slice of rock into a cabochon suitable for use in jewelry. This beginning class will teach you to trim, grind, and polish stone on a variety of lapidary equipment, creating a flatbacked, domed cab. Pottery 101 - Wheel Throwing

Work with clay and learn the basics of wheel throwing to make your own bowl! Class is 1 hour and includes two pieces of clay and a second visit to come back and paint what you make! This class is perfect for beginners!

Celestial Navigation

This two session course (facilitated by James C. Albury - co-host of the nationally syndicated PBS program ‘Star Gazers’) teaches you the fundamentals of finding your way around using the stars. By the end of the course, you’ll be able to tell what season it is, which direction you’re traveling and how far north or south your are on the Earth, just by the constellations you can see above you. Both two-hour sessions will be held at the Kika Silva Pla Planetarium at Santa Fe College’s NW Campus using their Chronos optical/mechanical projector by Goto.

This course will start with understanding your camera and how to use F-stop, shutter speed, and lenses to get the best results. Understanding composition and lighting to create dynamic photos will be reviewed. A field trip for shooting nature in the High Springs area and critiques to help improve your shots will occur.

You may drop a class and receive a full refund by calling the Community Education office DURING THE FIRST TWO WEEKS OF THE COMMUNITY EDUCATION TERM for any class 2 weeks or longer in length. For shorter classes, you must drop the class at least 2 business days before the class begins to receive a refund. After that, you must fill out a petition for refund. See website for refund policies. You will receive a refund check in the mail in approximately 3—4 weeks. Your credit card account will NOT be credited for the amount.
