THIS WEEKEND THERE’S A WONDERFUL VARIETY of artistic offerings to enjoy, speaking to the varied and multiple talents that make up our community. There are many stand-out events, but some that jump out at me are the Frank Buffalo Hyde lecture at galleryFRITZ on Saturday afternoon, the openings Friday night at Acosta Strong and Pippin Contemporary, and Pro Musica’s Heroic Beethoven concerts at the Lensic Saturday and Sunday. The variety of music is tremendous this weekend. Everything from

Nosotros are playing a 10 pm show at Tesuque Casino on Saturday night, with other rock bands at El Farol and La Fonda. Best part is that the rain of this past weekend is behind us and the weather should be just about perfect for any activity. EVENT Friday, September 20, Collected Works Bookstore and Coffeehouse celebrates Jaima Chevalier’s new book Fringe: María Benítez’s Flamenco Enchantment. The book contains almost 200 photos of Benítez taken by local and world-famous photographers, some of which will hang at Collected Works through September. María Benítez was born and raised in Taos. Trained from an early age in ballet, as a young woman she went to Spain in the 1960s to study flamenco. She returned to Santa Fe and New York in the mid ‘60s, performing in both cities and worldwide until her retirement from the stage in 2007. WISE FOOL NEW MEXICO FALL CIRCUS CABARET ERIC PETERS
PERFORMANCE Santa Fe Pro Musica opens its 2019–2020 season with a pair of concerts September 21 and 22. Guest soloist is violinist Colin Jacobsen playing Erich Korngold’s 1945 violin concerto. Born in Europe in 1897, Korngold was a child prodigy in composition, emigrating to the United States in 1935 to write film scores—and escape Europe’s growing antisemitism. Once denigrated by critics because of Korngold’s work in Hollywood and his adherence to tonal, romantic music, the now-appreciated violin concerto is built on themes from his films. The concerto is preceded by Julia Adolphe’s Shiver and Bloom, a 2017 piece for chamber orchestra. The concert opens with Thomas O’Connor leading the orchestra in Beethoven’s third symphony, “Eroica.” The symphony was written as a tribute to Napoleon Bonaparte and his efforts to reform French society in favor of the working classes, but Beethoven angrily withdrew the dedication when Napoleon proclaimed himself emperor. Exciting stunts fill the stage at the Wise Fool New Mexico Fall Circus Cabaret.
PERFORMANCE Unicycling, trapeze, clowning, aerial hoops, silks, spoken word, and more dazzle and delight at Wise Fool New Mexico’s Fall Circus Cabaret. The show features professional performers, advanced students, and youth performing spectacular feats and specialized skills to entertain and to welcome the fall season. Two renditions of the Fall Cabaret take place on Saturday. The 4 pm show has a youth focus while the 8 pm show includes adult themes. The allure of the natural world—both cultivated and untamed—drew three artists represented by Ventana Fine Art to seek out and interpret vistas well off the beaten path. Each artist has a unique take on the rural landscapes. Natasha Isenhour’s oil and pastel paintings lovingly capture serene, private moments among New Mexico’s cliffs, mesas, and waterways. Barry McCuan, who often works en plein air, paints the less-frequented areas of New Mexico, England, Scotland, and France. His renderings are warm and soft-edged. Don Tiller’s acrylic paintings, recognizable for their heavy contours and playful colors, wander into abstract realism. His rolling hills and cheery farmhouses idealize rural life.—Sarah Eddy

Three artists—Elizabeth Hahn, Gina Rossi, and Suzanne Wallace Mears— present a group show of their recent work. Hahn’s paintings are instantly recognizable, with midcentury shoes, skirts, and luggage hinting at the outline of a story. Hard edges and straight lines separate Hahn’s bold blocks of color. Gina Rossi’s paintings could not be more different. She paints landscapes, subtly blended color and soft edges forming land and sky. The third artist, Mears, works in kiln glass. Her sculptures are vibrant, incorporating glass of different colors and degrees of opacity as well as dichroic glass and metal elements. Mears enjoys how the pieces change with a room’s lighting.—Lisa J. Van Sickle
Keiko Mita was raised on a small island in Northern Japan. She studied jewelry design in Japan and New York, and was successful from the beginning, winning awards in Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. In 2002 she moved to New York and opened her own studio. Mita works in high-karat gold and mixed metals, often set with diamonds and colored stones. The waves and sand of Rebun Island, her native land, often appear in her designs. She will be at the gallery Friday evening and all day Saturday, September 21.—LVS

The artwork of Mark Bowles and Ali Launer may not appear, at first glance, to have much in common. Bowles paints in acrylic on large canvases, favoring landscapes with a low horizon line and leaving brightly colored skies to fill most of the canvas. Launer covers animal skulls in tiny glass beads, creating patterns by following the contours of the bone. Both artists start with nature, enhancing it by adding color and pattern. Both also confront the passage of time. Bones have always been a symbol of life and death, the skull in particular a memento mori. In some of his paintings, Bowles marks off a square or rectangle, painted in the colors the sky would have been earlier or will be later, marking the shift from morning to evening.—LVS
