“S
o, then I guess the question is whether you’re the coyote, the chicken… or the whale?” my clearly bewildered compatriot asked, obviously confused but still (apparently) interested. “Precisely,” I retorted with an academic’s emphasis. “That is indeed the question.” We’d been sitting at the bar at Three Pickles on Canon Perdido for almost an entire hour, enjoying our lunch and Bob Lovejoy’s quick wit, my friend in a suit – no tie, he’s come too far for such formality – and immaculately buffed dress shoes, me in jeans and a Pendleton (and Birkenstocks), lost deep in conversation about life and business and wives and kids and balance. I knew the answer for my friend beyond any doubt; he’s all whale, through and through. Slow and steady, always forward, building a career with chartable trajectory and careful planning. Safe. Reliable. A behemoth, nearly unstoppable in his ambition. But also quite predictable. I was a whale, too, once. Predictable. Steady. Suddenly it was less clear. ...continued p.5
