FROM THE EDITORIAL DIRECTOR

One of my favorite things about living in Santa Barbara is the homes behind the hedges. With beautiful stone walls or high foliage, the residences are blocked from view…but once you step inside the grounds, I find I am constantly surprised with the beauty, imagination, and creativity that abounds. With its specific Mediterranean look—the red tile roofs, white walls, bougainvillea, meandering stone driveways—the “Santa Barbara Style” has been widely exported around the world, even heavily touted in advertising and backdrops for television and movies, too. So when we decided it was time to celebrate our city’s distinct decor and design in our returning Home & Garden special issue, we selected a diverse collection of abodes that reflect a wide range of our American Riviera style. We were thrilled to be welcomed into our cover girl Ruthie Sommers’s ranch-style spread (“Town & Country,” page 118) for a day of down-home chic, rambling conversations, and casual yet impeccable interiors. Sally Russ’s colorful and authentic hacienda (“Riviera Rustica,” page 128) transports us into another world. Stephen and Susan Keeney’s design mecca Lucca Antiques makes a big move from Los Angeles to Carpinteria, and with it, we get new neighbors in Riven Rock (“Naturals with Neutrals,” page 138). Art is in the eye of the beholder, and Jon and Cassandria Blackmore make a downtown historical building a unique living/work/studio/gallery space in “Home Is Where the Art Is” (page 146). “Cue the Light” (page 156) is a phrase that director Peter Smillie has used often in his career, but it’s his sprawling Hope Ranch home that takes center stage. Lastly, heritage and design collide in an elaborate coffee-table tome, Spanish Colonial Style: Santa Barbara and the Architecture of James Osborne Craig and Mary McLaughlin Craig. We spotlight the duo and the legendary landmarks they have created in “Old World Charm” (page 166). Those of us lucky enough to live here enjoy our homes for entertaining, especially in our indoor/outdoor paradise. While we have a wealth of amazing restaurants, some of my favorite evenings are spent with friends over delicious meals that make you want to linger until the last of the fireplace’s flames have faded. A good sign of a truly successful home is one from which you don’t want to leave….you want to stay, dream, live, and be surrounded by its beauty.

“Susan Keeney is such a uniquely positive person, I could have sat at her dining table and chatted all day,” says this Los Angeles-based writer who penned “Naturals with Neutrals” (page 138) and is releasing her first novel, Gainesville (William Morrow), next year. “When you look closely at the art and objects in their house, you see the layers of detail emerge. We also had the pleasure to work with many different photographers to capture the essence of each distinct home. Christina Rottman sets up a modern studio in the historic Presidio neighborhood When interior designer CHRISTINA ROTTMAN decided to move her team to the Presidio neighborhood, she created a studio with both heart and style. After combining—and gutting—two office spaces, she developed a custom plaster wall finish inspired by the whitewashed adobe Presidio itself. To give a historic look an edgier feel, she layered in modern elements including Tom Dixon copper pendants, vintage rams’ heads, and floating bookshelves. On one wall, a satiny gold mosaiclike wallpaper gives texture and the illusion of tile while actually being a low-maintenance performance product. With lofty ceilings, loads of natural sunlight, and mood boards throughout, Rottman says it’s the optimal creative space. “I love the modern lines of this building in particular—a strong but appropriate juxtaposition to the historic elements,” she says, adding it’s “so simple, yet so pristinely elegant.” 300 E. may soon be known as much for her homes as for her humor (she recently penned her own design book, Home), spends a lot of time shopping in Santa Barbara. Since she and wife Portia de Rossi renovated a Montecito stone farmhouse, they’ve found many antiques—a staple of her signature design— at neighborhood stores. “I feel so lucky to be able to call Santa Barbara my home. It’s such a special place with great people,” DeGeneres says. “I love the Upper Village to do my antique shopping. And I love casual dinners at Trattoria Mollie, Tre Lune, Lucky’s, San Ysidro Ranch, and Via Vai. I just love it there so much. Have I made that clear?” J . B . K .

Designing from the BOTTOM UP There’s a new face in Santa Barbara’s burgeoning Design District. The opening of a kitchen and bath showroom on Gutierrez Street marks the next stage in the evolution of REED INTERIORS since Romain Doussineau acquired the company on Santa Claus Lane in 2011. “My husband always loved flooring and design,” says Myriam Doussineau, “and his vision has led to what we have today.” Along with its original hardwood and carpet offerings, the firm first added upholstery and design then began to source furniture from Europe and Mexico. “We specialize in modern Italian design,” she says, “couches, tables, and chairs in leather or fabric but with modern lines.” The mix of traditional flooring and contemporary furnishings, increasingly popular in Europe, gives a room “soul.” Why the new venture? “When people remodel, 99 percent start with the kitchen,” says Myriam. “We

wanted to add that.” Teaming with French architect and designer Michel Clair and working exclusively with Italian manufacturer Armony, Reed offers an array of styles—including transitional, Shaker, and contemporary lacquer cabinets—as well as different colors, arrangements, countertops, and accessories. Especially trendy are Carrara marble or quartz countertops as well as the latest bells and whistles. “Customers want modern technology,” she says, “but with the look and feel of traditional or transitional styles. Now we can show off what we do and what you can do to make the place your own.” 3821 Santa Claus Ln., Carpinteria, 805-684-7583, and 590 E. Gutierrez St., Santa Barbara, 805-684-7583. Global Studies Meet BIRGIT KLEIN who is bringing her European design sensibilities into our neck of the woods. Originally from Germany, “Bee” has lived in London, New York, and Los Angeles until she realized this was home for her. “I fell in love with Santa Barbara when we visited to watch the Bombardier polo final,” she says. “I remember it so clearly, as I was newly pregnant and I just knew that this is where I want to raise my family. “ Now, she and her husband have moved their two children, Karlie, 6, and Luca, 3, to be near the mountains in Montecito. While she’s working on creating a local studio and storefront full of unique European home furnishings and accents, she’s still bouncing from project to project all over the globe. Her style, which she calls “luxurious and timeless yet comfortable and relaxed,” includes signature components such as sculptural pieces, lots of texture, draperies, and muted tones—however the style varies as much as the cities she works in. “I have travelled extensively in my life but there is no better place to bring up a family than Santa Barbara.” J E N N I F E R B L A I S E K R A M E R B IR G IT K L EIN. Beach VIBE “I have a very hands-on approach,” says Jodi Goldberg, the creative force behind Montecitobased JODIGDESIGNS . “I like to explore how a client wants to live in a space, and I make that vision come to life.” The results generally reflect her penchant for interesting textiles, textures, attention to detail, and a sense of openness. “The rooms flow,” she adds. “That’s a signature feeling.” Jodi also enjoys working in a gamut of styles. “It gives me the chance to explore something new.” For a spectacularly sited beach house/second home in Santa Barbara, she made use of the clients’ collection of contemporary art and added customdesigned furnishings, giving the house the feel of a vacation getaway, a place where the family could gather and relax. Designed for indoor-outdoor living, the house is “very Santa Barbara,” she says. “The views are magnificent, and there are tons of entertainment spaces…so many places to be happy in that house!” J O A N T A P P E R J O D IG D E SIG NS. The hills are ALIVE This year, the SANTA BARBARA BOTANIC GARDEN celebrates its 90th

anniversary with five new gardens conceived, designed, and installed thanks to Seed the Future campaign funding. Two of the gardens—the children’s Centennial Maze and the Wooded Dell—were donated by the Garden Club of Santa Barbara to commemorate its own 100th anniversary. ECOLAWNSB , a sustainable landscaping business, designs around “waterwise” trees, plants, and synthetic grass—which requires zero water and little maintenance. successful stints in San Francisco in graphic design and letterpress before turning her creative eye to landscape design back in her hometown. “A child of two Mountain Drive artists, I grew up in their ceramic studio, gardening on our shared fiveacre property,” Eaton recalls. Landscape designer “As a Yale undergrad, other ISA HENDRY EATON . parents sent their kids care packages of chocolate and chips, but my parents sent me bundles of sage picked on Rattlesnake Canyon trail.” Now a mother of three, Eaton transformed her own family’s Mission Canyon home into a playful, colorful paradise and quickly had several friends hire her. She went on to study horticulture at Santa Barbara City College and says the transition from graphic to landscape design was fluid, since many elements are the same— composition, color, and form—with the added element of working with living material in 3D. She adds: “Santa Barbara is in my bones. While living in San Francisco, I dreamed in colors of agave green, bougainvillea red, and terra-cotta orange, and I knew I had to end up in the only place that ever felt like home.”

For super easy arrangements, Grant partnered with local florist Pen + Poppy for a step-by-step, foolproof approach:

Gillian Valentine Grant, a former event planner with Merryl Brown Events, has started her own entertaining blog, GATHERINGS, INC., full of DIY tips for everything from making home-cooked meals to floral accents to family gatherings. “It has helped shaped my eye to identify how can you still make things special and unique without spending a lot of money or time,” she says of her event experience. Herewith, Gillian’s tips for bringing your garden to the vase.

• Choose monochromatic flowers from your garden or favorite florist. • Remove unnecessary leaves and cut stems diagonally. • Start the arrangement with a bold or heavy flower (such as protea) and work from there, grouping flowers and arranging them in sections and levels, starting from the top.

ALLISON ARMOUR is renowned internationally

for her iconic Aqualens fountain, a meditative sculpture that garnered a silver medal at London’s prestigious Chelsea Flower Show in 2000. Hundreds of Aqualens fountains have been installed at private homes, hotels, and public institutions in far-flung locations from Europe to East Asia. Currently, Armour’s recent largescale metal sculptures appear likely to become as coveted as her Aqualens. L . D . P O R T E R

It’s no coincidence LINDA EKSTROM’s sculptures of Bibles— whose printed pages have been carefully shredded to spill out in graceful tangles—resemble a woman’s unruly head of hair. By transforming the written words into tactile objects, Ekstrom directly confronts the patriarchy of religious institutions. “While the altered books are no longer books operationally,” notes the artist, “they function visually.” L . A New ANGLE BIRGIT FAUSTMANN’s impressive geometric

sculptures are designed to be studied from various angles, so much so the artist often includes mirrors in her installations to multiply viewers’ potential vantage points. Working primarily in Baltic plywood, Faustmann examines the effect of projecting two-dimensional ground plans into the third dimension. The result is both lyrical and undeniably complex. L . D . P .

Leading LENSMAN

If you’ve ever seen a photographic image of architecture that literally took your breath away, FARSHID ASSASSI was probably behind the camera that captured it. For more than 30 years, the Santa Barbara-based photographer has produced stunning images of groundbreaking architecture located throughout the United States. It’s an open secret that the astounding beauty of Assassi’s work has played a significant role in the 300-plus design awards his architect clients have garnered over the years. In addition to his sheer talent, Assassi’s success is inextricably linked to his skillful wielding of emerging visual technology. Always on the cutting edge, Assassi’s latest venture—überstylish story-based Moments in Architecture videos—changes the way we view architecture in an exciting and unique way. Originally from Iran, Assassi studied architecture at Milan’s oldest university, Politecnico di Milano, before settling in Santa Barbara where he received his masters degree from the Brooks Institute of Photography in 1980. Imagine dining with friends in a stunning room surrounded by lavender, rosemary, and olive trees while a guest chef prepares memorable food paired with very good wine. That was the idea when creative minds David Pringle, Caroline Harrah, and Rich Rees sat down with SUNSTONE VINEYARDS & WINERY owners Anna and Bion Rice and envisioned the winery shifting to become a luxury culinary retreat for the Central Coast. Hoping to create a food and wine epicenter in the Santa Ynez Valley—much like what’s happening in Napa—Sunstone is now hosting custom bespoke dinners and opening the villa for overnight stays. To kick things off, they hosted a high-end vegan dinner, as Harrah says the cuisine is moving beyond “hempwearing hippies” and into the mainstream for those seeking a healthier lifestyle. The crew brought in lauded Los Angeles-based chef and author Mark Reinfeld, who is known for converting meat lovers over to the lighter side of veganism, even for just one night. “It’s important to me to emphasize the idea

Flavor FAVOR The latest cookbook from local chef Pascale Beale: LES FRUITS: SAVORY AND SWEET RECIPES FROM THE MARKET TABLE ($29.95, M27 Editions). Drawing inspiration from different regions around the world—“I love North African food, the spices used in Moroccan and Tunisian cooking, dishes from Lebanon, the Middle East, Turkey, Greece, Italy, Spain, and France” and incorporating the bounty of produce grown on the Central Coast— Beale developed 240 luscious pages of 96 recipes that “delve into the marriage of salty and sweet, sweet and sour, sugar and spice,” she says. Whether it’s roasted Cornish hens with apricots or seared tuna with cherry relish, “this book embraces those flavors.” G I N A Z . T E R L I N D E N PASC ALESK IT C H E N . C O M

MUSIC for the MOUTH

In Santa Barbara’s wine industry, Steve and Chrystal Clifton are a force to be reckoned with. (He’s wellknown as half of winemaking duo Brewer-Clifton— their 2012 Pinot Noir Sta. Rita Hills made Wine Spectator’s list of the top 10 wines of 2014—as well as the founder of Palmina Wines.) Having worked together since 2000 and married in 2004, Steve, whose first career was in the music industry, and Chrystal (the marketing mind behind all three labels) are just now launching their first label together—and their first focus on French varietals—LA VOIX WINERY . “It’s been amazing to pull our love for storytelling, art, music, and wine together,” says Chrystal. Their first releases of La Voix (“the voice” in French) include a rosé called She’s Crafty, as well as three Pinot Noirs named Rebel Rebel, Satisfaction ($75, pictured), and Reflektor. “Steve began singing in a band again about three years ago,” says Chrystal. “That’s when the seed was planted about creating a brand that bridges the way both wine and music can inspire and mark a moment in time.” New additions to the tracklist this year: a Chardonnay, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Source

Santa Barbara wine guru Ted Vance spends up to six months per year touring specifi c viticultural regions in Europe, studying the terroir, varietals, and vintners. This encyclopedic wealth of knowledge translates into his wine importing business, THE SOURCE . Recently, Ted and his fi ancée, Andrea Arredondo, have revamped their website, making it perhaps the most interactive and user-friendly online wine retailer. Citing the trend and future in importing direct to the customer, “People miss the connection between what they are drinking and who made it,” says Vance. “This fi lls that gap.” With a team of six—and combined decades of experience as a sommelier, winemaker, restaurant manager, and more—The Source knows exactly what to look for and “we have strong opinions about what constitutes good wine, good relationships, and good business,” says Vance. “Needless to say, our expectations of the producers we choose to represent are high.” The site off ers 700 diff erent wines from about 80 producers from France, Italy, Austria, and Portugal. But the best part is the search engine—you can sleuth out your new go-to based on not only the color (whites, roses, reds, or sparkling), but by the style (be it crisp, dry, fl oral, fruity, full-bodied), price, country of origin, and more. Ruthie Sommers wears a lot of hats. Like maybe five in a given day. She and her three daughters— Eloise, 9, Bailey, 5, and Posey, 4—started a collection of vintage top hats, Mexican wedding hats, and cowboy hats they found together at Goleta thrift stores. The fact that all these hats would inherently set the decor tone at their Santa Barbara ranch house should come as no surprise to those who recall the iconic debut Domino magazine cover featuring Ruthie snuggling her dog and rocking the design world with her havefun, can-do, “fast and fearless” decorating attitude. While that cover is now 10 years old and Ruthie has since racked up a long list of celebrity clientele, she still finds great joy in affordable design and peo ple who are proud of their homes. Steering away from the sense that everyone has to be a brand these days, she sticks to her instincts and seeks solitude on her ranch as many weekends as possible. The shingled home with hunter green trim sits on 90 acres in a canyon amid Gaviota’s stunning coastal locale. When she and her husband, Luke, bought it four years ago, it was basically move-in ready, however they remodeled the kitchen with a large is land, white cabinetry, brass hardware, and cottageindustrial sconces. Then it was all about the hats. “I wanted to keep it ranchy, not decorated,” Ruthie says. “I didn’t want it to look like a photo shoot, I wanted to fill the house with local things and make it a place where we could come and take a deep breath.” True to her words, everyone literally has to unplug on the property—there’s no cell reception. Plus, Ruthie is a no-screens mom, therefore the kids rarely have TV or tech time so she compensates with all the dress up. Friends are always welcome but kids have to trade up their iPads for magnifying glasses and nature walks. She sees most kids, including her own, have a fit of

anxiety for about five minutes, then it ends and they play together. Painting alfresco, carving out trails, and hitting the beach—especially with dad, who always dreamed of having a place to surf—are among the big days of ranch life. “We live for the weekends,” she says. While weekdays are spent in their East Coast-style house in Los Angeles’s Hancock Park and summers are spent with family at their home in Newport, Rhode Island, she loves the rustic, authentic vibe in Santa Barbara and the spiritual feeling she gets walking around the hills. “I can’t help but be in awe of the land.” On any given weekend, the crew is outdoors with their five dogs. If L.A. is about tennis clubs and trimmed boxwoods, the ranch is her place for mixing vintage Playboys with pretty pillows. A free spirit with a wild sense of humor, Ruthie is known for her non stop tangents on all topics and there’s no telling what she’ll say or where she’ll go next. She and Luke love the quiet as much as a good party—they’ve hosted huge birthday fetes under twinkly lights and roller skating nights after the kids have gone to bed. While she laughs and chocks this all up to ADHD, it’s her sense of adventure and how she never takes herself too seriously that translates into her whimsical, ap proachable design mentality. As she layers on more local finds to her mix on the ranch—Ronald Regan plates, vintage saddles, surfing photos, and old black-and-whites of the Santa Ynez Valley—it’s a reminder that good design isn’t always at a high cost. As she says, “You’re only as good as your smile when you open the door.” ●

As Sally Russ traverses the entry hall’s custommade Mexican pavers, her kinetic energy is sparking merrily. “Did I tell you that my friend who’s an artist made those?” Before the item—or the friend—is actually identified, she is already in the adjoining room pointing out another piece made by another friend. And yet another. It’s clear this home’s soulful cache of gifted bibelots, textiles, and artworks are a warm reflection of Russ herself. The 1926 Spanish Colonial house perched high up on the Riviera looks as if Diego Rivera just stepped out for tapas. Room to room, lime-washed walls boast rich, deep colors from one end of the rainbow to the other. Mexican serapes and Guatemalan huipils— some specially woven, others found treasures—are layered over worn leather chairs, hung on walls, and illuminated by vintage wrought iron chandeliers in every shape and size. Although Sally and her husband Bill live full-time in a Houston high-rise she describes as “very modern and very white,” they both have been drawn to California since their teenage years. So when their son Will (owner of the Santa Barbara Rock Gym) started attending Brooks Institute 13 years ago, they started renting houses in different neighborhoods—near the El Encanto Hotel, in Montecito, in Summerland, and another near the mission. “But we decided on the Riviera,” says Sally. “So we told our realtor to search for an old house, George Washington Smith-esque, original—and we wanted ocean views.” Sally’s work with Brazos Abiertos—an organization devoted to improving healthcare and providing education in the prevention of sexually transmitted

diseases in the Yucatán—meant she used to travel to Mexico every other month. Being amid the country’s vivid colors and the crafts and textures influenced how she decorated her home. Although the aesthetic is pure Russ, she credits their architect Robert Foley with de signing intricate details such as the custom iron trusses that suspend across the bedrooms with the serpentine lines of a fertility goddess, offering both extra bracing support and a decorative focal point. The master bedroom’s unfortunate lack of an ocean view was handled with equal dispatch. “I found this ocean painting by an artist in Mexico who had never seen the ocean,” says Sally. Artworks—and their stories attached—include a boldly primitive 40-by-40-inch work El Montecito de Braga procured for $35 that survived a cleaning with Pledge by a well-meaning local, followed by a short taxi cab ride from the mercado to the hotel, then a first-class airplane upgrade before landing in the front room; a textile bunny sporting a sign announcing it will not tell you that you have spinach in your teeth (also made by a friend); and a circa 1940s The Orange Seller by local artist Charles P. Austin wrangled at an auction with her husband. “I love that one. I keep or anges in front of it,” Russ muses. But the tour de force—the kitchen and its domed boveda ceiling—is home to the Russ’s beloved Talavera collections of Gorky, Uriarte, and Fiestaware, some gifted and some gathered with the help of local designer Christy Martin of Studio Encanto. The brick-lined ceiling coupled with intricately carved cabinetry creates the effect of having wandered into the cozy cellar of a Mexican potentate. Russ credits her mother—who, at 96, still plays a wicked game of bridge— with her inherited love of entertaining. “Growing up in Houston, every night our dinners were amazing. She’d garnish the platters, use kerosene lanterns, and

SB_MAG_H+G_RUSS_03.indd 136

beautiful cloth napkins. She was the Martha Stewart of her time!” Now, three generations of friends and family gather for weeks at a time soaking up that same creatively colorful feasting—Santa Barbara style. And then inevitably offer up another trinket to the Russ collection of gifted treasures. ●

Susan Keeney believes in fate. Four years ago, when she and her husband, Stephen, were on a buying trip for their antiques stores, Lucca, they purchased a monumental copper sculpture made by lighting designer Serge Mouille when he was a professor at the Olivier de Serre art school in Paris in 1977. It’s a rare piece. It weighs thousands of pounds. And they had no one in mind to sell it to, nowhere to put it. “That’s what we do,” Susan says, with a shrug, from the dining table of her new home in Montecito. “We buy things before we know what we’re going to do with them.” The Keeneys’ taste for European antiques—a finely edited selection of items acquired during their frequent trips everywhere from Spain to Sweden—is wellknown coast to coast. Stephen, a former philosophy professor, works on restorations and builds custom light fixtures, often from antique or reclaimed materi als. Susan, an author and founder of cancer survivor’s group Cancervive (as a teenager, she had a rare form of the disease), is drawn to artfully made items in organic materials such as wood, leather, or stone that have acquired a muted patina. The couple met at an antiques show in Redondo Beach 15 years ago and have opened stores on La Cienega in Los Angles and on 61st Street in Manhattan; their Lucca brand attracts people who share their love of neutral tones, texture, and bold, intriguing pieces— including serial renovator and design aficionado Ellen DeGeneres and Santa Barbara-based interior designer Kyle Irwin to name a few. Susan also works with select interior design clients such as former golf pro Fred Couples, who has a home in Newport Beach. Nearly every dramatic impulse buy the Keeneys make in Europe for Lucca quickly finds its way into some of the most exquisite homes in the country. Nothing seems to collect dust on the selling floor or sit in storage for long. However, they were saving the Mouille sculpture for that “one day” scenario, when Stephen and Susan (a lifelong Angeleno) would realize their dream of selling their Brentwood house, packing up, and heading north on the 101. “We have a lot of clients here. I do some interior design work as well. And we just fell in love with Montecito,” she says. “We knew we wanted to make our lives here, but we are not retired, and we want to work.” Last December, after making repeated offers on what Susan describes as a “nondescript ’80s ranch house,” they purchased the property from a German industrialist and began to quickly Lucca-fy the space. They gutted it, added a soaring wall of windows in

the living room to create a view of the mountains, and installed their signature finishes: bluestone tile, Belgian-oak floors, and their favor ite paint colors for every project— hushed Rockport Gray and warm Ballet White by Benjamin Moore. Outside, they bulldozed a tennis court and planted an olive grove. And they installed the Mouille piece on a flat parcel of land edged by low trees whose crooked branches echo the angles of the sculpture. For the Keeneys, the renovation and interior design was the easy part. The challenge was figuring out how to maintain their business so they could spend the days when they aren’t at a hotel or on a plane in their slice of paradise. In typical fashion, Susan made a sizable leap of faith and transferred the whole operation—their offices, restoration facilities, and an enormous show room—to a 35,000-square-foot facility in Carpinteria, the largest industrial space in the area. Judging by the reception of Lucca’s opening early this year and Susan’s propensity for bold moves and grand gestures, the entire community has benefited from her unique optimism and impeccable vision. ●

After 20 years in Seattle, Cassandria and Jon Blackmore needed sunshine. Heading down the California coast in their fully equipped diesel motor home with their children Orion and Leona, the couple was pursuing a dream. Cassandria, an artist and Califor nia native, yearned to live by the ocean; Jon, a musi cian born in Tucson, fondly recalled his home state’s majestic Santa Catalina mountains. The family made several stops along the way, but when they rounded the bend from El Capitán State Beach, they knew Santa Barbara—with its mountains adjacent to the ocean— was where they wanted to stay. As artists accustomed to unconventional living spaces, Cassandria and Jon lived in abandoned Seattle warehouses at the height of the grunge music era and were known for salonlike parties combining local artists and musicians. Finding a comparable living situation in Santa Barbara proved daunting to say the least, but the Blackmores had luck (and persistence) on their side. Following up on an Internet listing for a photography stu dio, they happened upon a vintage apartment building that seemed to have been waiting for them to discover it.

Built in 1907, the Blackmores’ home combines elements of the mission revival and craftsman styles of architecture emblematic of that time period. Over the years, as the neighborhood developed around it, the building remained largely untouched, a silent witness to Santa Barbara’s modernization. Cassandria and Jon were immediately captivated by the structure’s expansive spaces with north-facing windows. “The light was golden,” she recalls, “I’ve never been to the South of France, but this is how I imagine the light being.” Better yet, the building had plenty of living space with ample room for Cassandria’s art studio. And after they started researching the building’s history, the Blackmores were convinced it was all meant to be. The original owners Carolyn and Edwin —CASSANDRIA BLACKMORE Gledhill were renowned portrait photographers who used the building as their studio and residence, while the apartment spaces were actual studios inhabited by several well-known artists (Diego Rivera among them, see “Picture Perfect Past,” page 175). “From what we’ve understood, artists have always lived in here,” Cassandria says, and it’s clear she and Jon consider it their duty to perpetuate their home’s legacy as an art haven. Due to the neglect it received over the years, bringing the structure back to its art-centric existence

“We are big dreamers...

proved challenging. Luckily, “everything was wrong in the right way,” says Jon. The couple did the majority of the restoration work themselves, and the result is sophisticated and chic, with just the right mix of quirkiness and fine art. It’s the type of environment interior designers mine for inspiration. Cassandria’s artwork is a constant but not overpowering presence at Casa Blackmore. “She is world known, but she’s a humble person and won’t talk about it,” says Jon. Indeed, Cassandria’s art chops are impressive: She’s a respected member of the modern studio glass movement (think Dale Chihuly) by virtue of her unique twist on verre églomisé, a traditional reverse glass painting technique. After completing a glass painting, she shatters it and painstakingly reassembles the pieces like a puzzle. The result has been described as “a sublime landscape of cracks frozen in time.” Humility is also part of Jon’s character. When pressed, he will offhandedly admit having always played the drums, but in fact, he’s toured and recorded with numerous Seattle bands (bicycle, Anodyne, SuperDeluxe) over the years, and has been drafted to play drums on Blind Melon bassist Brad Smith’s next solo project. Add to that his art advisory skills, Continued on page 175

If the exterior of Stephanie and Peter Smillie’s Spanish Colonial hints at the home’s history—designed in 1927 by Alexander Bertrand Harmer, this was one of Hope Ranch’s original 13 houses—the striking objects inside testify to the couple’s own story. An early 19th-century map of Africa hung in the high-ceilinged entry hall is a nod to Peter’s South African birthplace and a lanky wooden Polynesian “surf god” statue is a clue to the couple’s global sailing voyages. An ornate crystal chandelier hangs above where Peter was insistent on small windows near the ceiling—not just for the light but for the way sunbeams bounce off the prisms and create rainbows on the walls. “I am a frustrated designer/architect,” says the noted former commercials director who, with Stephanie, ran a production company in Los Angeles and worked around the world. Over the years, the couple, who have twin teenage sons Lucas and Travis, have owned a Balinese-style house in Malibu, a beachfront spread in Hollister Ranch, and a Wallace Neff house in Hope Ranch, among others. For long periods, they also sailed through the Mediterranean, Caribbean, and South Pacific, but they were living in a contemporary beach house in New Zealand when a business trip brought Peter back to California. While driving around Hope Ranch he saw a For Sale sign, telephoned the agent, toured the property, and called Stephanie to say he’d bought the house. At the time, there were heavy curtains on the windows, and the rooms were “packed to the rafters with SANTA BARBARA

furniture,” Peter remembers, “but the house had good bones, and considering it was from the ‘20s, it was in good shape.” To increase the size of the rooms, improve the flow, and, most importantly, add more light, the couple connected with architect Peter Becker, who has a way of bringing historic projects unobtrusively up to date. Historic restrictions meant that the envelope of the roughly 5,500-square-foot house couldn’t be altered, but Becker combined small rooms, removed low ceilings, and created a tower space in the bedroom wing that functions like a light well. He added a curving “mole hole” passageway to separate public and private spaces and designed an upstairs office for Peter, reached by an outside stairway adorned with handmade tiled risers. “Peter Smillie has astounding taste,” says Becker. “It was a wonderful collaboration, and that’s the best thing in architecture.” The renovations were carried out by Allen Construction, which kept things as original as possible. “We took the doors and windows and reused them,” recalls Ian Cronshaw, vice president of Allen, who worked long-distance with the Smillies, who were in New Zealand during the two-and-a-half years of construction, “You always want to build a beautiful house,” he adds, “but the owners are the heart of it.”

Furnishings and art truly add to the heart of the home, as they have accompanied the family across oceans from move to move. Covering one wall of the living room, a huge framed canvas depicts a colonial Portuguese East African scene. Opposite, flanking the French doors that lead to a stretch of lawn and ocean views, are two iconic photographs by Norman Seeff, one of Ray Charles, the other of John Belushi. In the adjoining den, a leather art deco couch and chairs are paired with colorful curtains and cushions made from African fabrics picked up during their travels. In contrast, the new master bath, which replaced a 1970s-style den, is a luxe space of crystal, marble, and mirrored shelves that show off an array of antique perfume bottles. In the kitchen, stainless steel cabinets and appliances complement the boldly veined marble counters in an airy space designed to accommodate a long monastery table made in Argentina in the 1800s. “We have our stuff and stick it where it fits,” jokes Peter. “It’s eclectic—that’s why it works!” “Hope Ranch is an interesting place—quiet and peaceful,” says Stephanie. “We wanted the boys to be able to run around.” Their five-acre property also in cludes a tennis court and pool, and now that the twins are 16, a skateboard ramp. A storeroom has been converted to a bunkhouse for younger guests, and a gatehouse turned into a guest cottage. And for a family with a passion for surfing and sailing, there’s always the ocean, alluringly close at hand and glittering with light. ●

Husband-and-wife architects James Osborne Craig and Mary McLaughlin Craig played a pivotal role in the development of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture in Santa Barbara in the 1920s. Many of their works are major examples of our city’s signature style, however their names are largely unknown. A recent exhibition at the Santa Barbara Historical Museum offered a vivid reminder of their contributions to the city’s transformation into a mecca of Spanish Colonial architecture. The exhibition was accompanied by a major monograph on the Craigs’ lives and work; Spanish Colonial Style: Santa Barbara and the Architecture of James Osborne Craig and Mary McLaughlin Craig was written by their granddaughter Pamela Skewes-Cox along with architectural historian Robert Sweeney and published by Rizzoli New York in association with the Santa Barbara Historical Museum. This collaboration delivered what the authors call “a long overdue spotlight on the rich career of these tremendously influential artists.” With unseen photography, renderings, and historical imagery, the book is their tribute to this largely untold episode in local architecture. Here, the authors share a few excerpts. ●

1/28/16 1:10 PM

“Osborne Craig left two buildings of such potency—even precocity, given his age—completed posthumously, that one suspects he would have given George Washington Smith ample competition if not for his premature death at age 33. One was Casa Santa Cruz, also known as the Hoffmann House, designed for Irene and Bernhard Hoffmann.” Casa Santa Cruz delivers much of what the authors call the hallmarks of Spanish Colonial style: whitewashed stucco and plaster walls, exposed wood-beamed ceilings, wrought iron detailing, and “deep, dramatic fireplaces that cast magical shadows.”

“Mary Craig is indelibly linked with Plaza Rubio. Completed with Margaret Andrews, it represents a remarkable synergy of strong women in the 1920s and coincides with a gradually shifting ethos in a profession historically dominated by males. Here lies Mary Craig’s true legacy.”

In 1928, El Paseo opened and unveiled its addition with a twoday celebration with “Denishawn Dancers.” SB_MAG_H+G_SPANISH_COLONIAL.indd 169

which emerged when collectors of Cassandria’s work would visit her Seattle studio and ask Jon to recommend other artists. Eventually, Jon opened galleries representing other artists, selling their work along with his wife’s. He’s currently the principal and director of Blackmore Projects, Jon Blackmore Fine Art with galleries in Seattle, San Francisco, Carmel-by-the-Sea, and—by appointment—Santa Barbara. And there’s more to come. As Cassandria says, “We’re definitely a creative family all the way.” Daugh ter Leona, 8, is anxious to follow in her mother’s footsteps, having already completed half of the 10 paintings she plans to exhibit in her own art show (gummy worms will be provided at the opening). Son Orion, 11, is a born collector; at age 9, his only birthday desire was for vintage books (1920s or older). Although not particularly interested in sports, after being gifted a tennis racket by his parents, Orion managed to confound them by excelling at the sport. Coincidentally, Orion’s current bedroom happens to be where Keith Gledhill, the Gledhill’s tennis champion son (he won the 1931 NCAA Men’s Singles Championship), grew up. In the end, the Blackmores are living proof that some things in life are truly meant to happen. As Jon says, “I never could have dreamed this up. Let’s see, let me find a place that Diego lived in for my wife, that a tennis star lived in for my son, the ocean, the mountains, the environment…I would never even be so bold to even wish for something like this.” Adds Cassandria, “But we are big dreamers…following our passion and our art.” ●

During the early decades of the 20th century, one of the best places to have your portrait taken was the Santa Barbara photography studio of Carolyn and Edwin Gledhill, conveniently located within walking distance of the Potter Hotel, a seaside resort featuring elaborately landscaped grounds, tennis courts, and a zoo. (De stroyed by fire in 1921, the hotel was never rebuilt.) Celebrities snapped by the Gledhills include screen star Walter Huston (director John’s father), writer Upton Sinclair, and Thacher School founder Sherman Day Thacher. The Gledhills also photographed famous artists, among them Diego Rivera, who jour neyed to Santa Barbara in 1941 to paint Frances Rich, a sculptor who happened to be renting an art studio from the Gledhills. Rivera used Rich’s studio to paint the portrait of Frances, and to paint two self portraits, one of which Rivera inscribed to Rich’s mother, screen star Irene Rich. Cassandria and Jon Blackmore currently own the former Gledhill studio building. L . D . P .

Messel handpainted the murals in 1939.

“I have always liked Oliver Messel’s touch, and our careers are eerily similar,” says highly regarded designer Paul Fortune, who started out doing murals and sets for music videos—not unlike Messel, who is known as one of the foremost stage designers of the 20th century (and both are Brits). Fortune, who is currently working on Sofia Coppola’s West Village apartment and another project in Montecito, has always wanted to view this talked-about—yet unseen by most— salle de bain at Lockwood de Forest’s famed Val Verde, a 1910 modernist villa in Montecito. “You’d never see this sort of thing done these days. I hesitate to say it’s camp, but it is a tent! And nobody does camp like the English.” GINA TOLLESON
