fundraisers, galas, and special events. From fun-runs and bake sales to glamorous galas, Santa Barbara’s nonprofits make it possible for all of us to give back to our community in enjoyable and creative ways. We at The Independent continue to support and applaud the organizations whose yearlong altruism improves the lives and welfare of many in our community.

LifeChronicles 3rd Annual Father Virgil Remarkable Life Award Honoring Pete & Gerd Jordano 6:00 PM. Fess Parker’s DoubleTree Resort

LifeChronicles created the Father Virgil Remarkable Life Award as an annual way to present him in video to our community and to also honor two people who exemplify the giving nature of Father Virgil. At this year’s dinner, our guests of honor are Pete and Gerd Jordano. We will feature video excerpts from Father Virgil just months before he passed, as well as video of our honorees, highlighting their stories of hard work and service to the S.B. commmunity. $200. Red Road Foundation Red Road Foundation Benefit 7:00 PM. Indochine

This benefit will aid in the building costs of a sustainable earthship school and safe home in Kampot, Cambodia, made out of recycled and natural materials. The foundation has already been able to purchase land, plant a first round of crops, and build a water source, but the schoolhouse and safe home is the last step before children and adults in the community can start benefiting in receiving education and shelter to create a sustainable living environment. $20. The 6th Annual Carpinteria Talent Showcase will feature 50 performers, including dancers, musicians, and a comedian, ranging in age from 8 to 94 and displaying their talents on instruments as familiar as the piano and as unusual as the Korean harp. Santa Barbara Strings Artistry of Strings

Heralded as one of the best classical concerts of last year, the Artistry of Strings Benefit Concert returns to Hahn Hall. Featuring the nationally renowned artists and educators Mary Beth Woodruff (violin), Basil Vendryes (viola), Andrew Smith (cello), Robert Cassidy (piano), and Jane Chung (violin), the concert program will feature works by Brahms, Mozart, and Piazzolla. These artists are bringing this rare concert to Santa Barbara to raise funds for Santa Barbara Strings, which educates and nurtures young string musicians through studying and performing master works in orchestras and a chamber music program. $40. Join local law enforcement agencies at one of the many Tip-A-Cop events in the Santa Barbara area as volunteer law enforcement officers add a whole new meaning to the phrase “Protect and Serve.” Officers trade in their badges for aprons at local restaurants, serving patrons lunch or dinner and collecting tips that directly benefit the athletes of Special Olympics Santa Barbara.
