love staying in hotels. The crisp, clean linens that magically appear anew each day, the perfectly manicured gardens and grounds, and the smiling faces ready to grant my every wish are a delightful departure from everyday life. When I heard about a house for sale in Santa Barbara at 428 Corona del Mar, I looked up the location and thought, “Wait, there are only hotels in that neighborhood.” I was partly correct. As a local, unless I’m going to the zoo or East Beach, it’s an area that I rarely visit. This part of the waterfront district is populated mostly by quaint inns and hotels that play part-time home for tourists. The adorable “Sea Captain’s House” at 428 Corona del Mar fits right in. Just like its neighbors, it is pristine, welcoming, and as charming as can be. But unlike its visitorserving counterparts, it’s an actual residence.

MAKE MYSELF AT HOME

Charm abounds before one even walks through the front gate. The facade of the house is quintessential Martha’s Vineyard, with a combination of white wooden shingles and planks accentuated by black shutters and a signature red door. A towering pine tree frames the house with its branches, and a wide gray walkway leads to the front porch and the treasures awaiting within. A gorgeous sunroom with floor-to-ceiling paned windows welcomes visitors into the house, with the living

room, dining room, and kitchen laid out beyond. Each space offers ooh-and-aahinspiring details that beg to be admired. I found myself in a kid-in-a-candy-store trance, unsure whether to linger over the details in each room or race through to experience it all. The living room boasts a traditional Santa Barbara sandstone fireplace with a bright white wooden mantel above, flanked by two multi-paned windows. The clean lines and symmetry of this room contrast perfectly with the angles of the huge bay windows in the dining room beyond. Both of these rooms enjoy high coved ceilings, wide-planked wood floors, and gorgeous period millwork detailing. On the day that I visited, a huge round dining room table was laden with a catered feast in anticipation of the many open-house-goers who were scurrying in to see the home. I couldn’t help but imagine similar holiday feasts that could be enjoyed for years to come. The kitchen lies beyond in a perfectly stylish blend of old and new. Stainless steel appliances cavort with board and batten woodwork, a farmhouse sink, and tiled backsplashes to continue the period charm and yet ensure current day comforts. On the left side of the house, all three bedrooms plus the full bathroom lie off two short hallways that also provide extra storage. The master bedroom is the largest of the three. Situated towards the front of the house, it enjoys an adjoining sun-filled sitting room that just may be my favorite space in the house. I looped back through the house toward the backyard and discovered a full laundry room and powder room tucked back behind the kitchen. The back door opens to a porch and stairs leading down to a cute back garden with a detached studio ready to be used as an office, playroom, or she shed. Sorry, it’s just too cute to be a man cave.

The garage sits on the side of the house through a garden gate. A pathway beyond leads to “The Sea Loft,” a separate upstairs unit that’s deserving of its own name and delivers much more than its demure entryway promises at first glance. A stairway upstairs reveals two big bedrooms, a full bath, a separate kitchen, and a large combo living and dining area with treetop views. But it’s the bonus rooms in this legal second residence that really surprises. Two dormered rooms on either side of the large, front bedroom offer versatile additional space. Either could serve as a reading nook, office, game room, or cozy guest room. I was captivated by the cute clapboard kitchen pantry, the first-impression view as one crests the entrance stairway, and the endearing sloped ceilings. But at over 1200 square feet, and permitted as a legal second residence, “The Sea Loft” also adds practical flexible options for interested buyers. As I walked away, I admired the pristine inns surrounding the idyllic “Sea Captain’s House.” I realized that as much as I love hotels, getting to live among them in this storybook-perfect-cottage would be an even more idyllic dream come true.

Military Ball Honors Veterans and Active Duty Members

O

n November 2, Pierre Claeyssens Veterans Foundation (PCVF) held its 23rd annual Military Ball, where it honored veterans and active duty members and paid special tribute to women in the military. At the entrance to this always-grand affair, guests were greeted by the sounds of Scottish bagpipe player Bill Boetticher while they strolled past WWII jeeps. During the extended reception in the ballroom foyer, veterans and their families mingled with active duty members and supporters and their families. Of the 600 guests, 250 attended as guests of the foundation, including ROTC members; returning veterans at SBCC and UCSB; enlisted personnel at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Point Magu, and Port Hueneme; and British Army Lt. Col. Ian Gumm and the Royal Welch Fusiliers. The Grand Ballroom was beautifully framed by white star projections against blue walls, red curtains on stage, and flags from a multitude of nations around the room. Guests were welcomed by emcee PCVF cofounder and codirector Lt. John Blankenship (USN, former), who related how Pierre Claeyssens, who created the first ball in 1996, felt very strongly that this event be held every year so that all veterans, regardless of rank or branch of service, would be honored and never forgotten. The program included solemn tributes, but also lighthearted, playful jabs at the different branches of service, and a dance break with a lively dance floor full of twenty-somethings to eighty-somethings. Senior Cadet Kirsten Annell (UCSB ROTC Surfrider Battalion) performed the Missing Man Ceremony, explaining the symbolism of the small, spotlighted, empty table for missing comrades in arms who are with us in spirit. Major Carolyn Alexandra Wagnild, an Apache helicopter pilot in Iraq and Afghanistan, one of only three female pilots in her battalion, led the Salute to Services Musical Tribute, with members of each branch, former and current, rising. Blankenship emphasized the critical importance of supporting veterans, as PCVF does. In the past five years, PCVF has provided nearly $400,000 for emergency liv-

ing expenses to 37 returning veteran students at UCSB. In the past two years, PCVF has also supported many veteran graduates of SBCC in their continuing studies at UCSB and other schools. The foundation is an active participant in VETNET, a network of nonprofit organizations working with the VA to assist veterans and their families obtain the resources they need. Presenter, facilitator, and author Eileen McDargh enthralled guests with the story “Mama Was a WASP,” a reference to the Women Airforce Service Pilots, the 1,176 women who PCVF Boardmember Capt. Joe Danely (US Army former), Bonnie Jo Danely, flew for the military in WWII. McDargh related Yolanda Baptiste, and PCVF Boardmember Sgt. Dennis Merenbach (US Army how WASPs flew every kind of airplane manu- former) factured in the U.S. but were considered civilians, so they lacked military honor and benefits. The WASPs were finally granted military status in the 1970s and given the Presidential Gold Medal by President Obama in 2010. McDargh explained how the shortage of pilots led the military to accept female pilots. These women flew 60 million miles, and 38 died in the course of duty. Before the war’s end, Congress decided women would no longer be allowed to fly. McDargh related the heartbreaking story of how the WASPs’ commanding officer told them “Ladies, thank you for flying wingtip to wingtip with your brothers. Your services are no longer needed. the 1988 Summer Olympics and later worked as a mechanic for the now-infamous Lance Armstrong. Stefl has been cycling since high school, and he typically puts in about 100 miles a week. His favorite ride starts at home in Lompoc and heads out to the quiet scenery of Happy Canyon. Since 1989, he’s done about 50 “centuries,” or 100-mile group rides. Just for fun. When he’s not on his bike, you can find Stefl running job sites for Giffin & Crane, where he’s been a team member for 26 years. He grew up in the San Joaquin Valley, where he learned the construction trade while building dairy barns. Then, scooped up by Oklahoma Baptist University on a basketball scholarship, he earned an art degree, which he put to use for seven years in downtown Los Angeles as a line illustrator for a design firm. “I enjoyed it, and I was good at it,” he remembers. “But I got tired of sitting at a desk.”

He decided to get back into construction, focusing on highend custom homebuilding. He landed work with an Arroyo Grande–based contractor building an estate home in Santa Barbara. Needless to say, he grew fond of the place. “I really enjoyed Santa Barbara,” he says. “So, I decided to find the best builder in town and apply.” “Tom sought us out in 1991,” remembers Bruce Giffin. “Back in the day, we were more handson.
