Travel around Phuket is easy and convenient with a myriad of car rental operators serving car at the airport. In case of self-driving, GPS or map will enable one to travel around the Island. Also airport transfer taxis connecting airports to different landmarks around island are generally available. The locals usually use the colourful shared taxi called ‘Po-tong’. เทศกาลตรุษจีน วันขึน้ ปีใหม่ของลูกหลานมังกร บนเกาะภูเก็ต มีกจิ กรรมมงคลมากมาย เช่น ไหว้ เทพเจ้า และแห่มงั กรวันตรุษจีนในแต่ละปีจดั ขึน้ ตามปฏิทินจันทรคติจีน งานท้าวเทพกระษัตรี-ท้าวศรีสนุ ทร ตรงกับวันที่ 13 มีนาคม เป็นงานเฉลิมฉลองทีจ่ ดั ขึน้ อย่างยิง่ ใหญ่ เพือ่ รำลึกถึงสองวีรสตรีทป่ี กป้องเมืองถลางให้พน้ จากข้าศึก ประเพณีปล่อยเต่า เพือ่ อนุรกั ษ์พนั ธุเ์ ต่าทะเล มีการจัดงานในหลายหาดของเกาะปล่อยลูกเต่า ลงทะเลในวันที่ 13 เมษายน เทศกาลอาหารทะเล มีขนึ้ ในเดือนพฤษภาคม มีขบวนพาเหรดและการออกร้านอาหารทะเลจาก ร้านที่มีชื่อเสียง

เทศกาลไหว้พระจันทร์ พิธไี หว้เทพเจ้าด้วยขนม ไหว้พระจันทร์และขนมโก๋ ตรงกับวันขึน้ 15 ค่ำ เดือน 8 ตามปฏิทินจีน เทศกาลกินเจ จัดขึน้ ช่วงเดือนกันยายน-ตุลาคม ของทุกปี ชาวภูเก็ตจะถือศีลกินเจและมีประเพณี แห่เจ้าตามหลักความเชือ่ ไปตามถนนหลายสาย บนเกาะ ประเพณีสารทเดือนสิบ ประเพณีแสดงความ กตัญญูตอ่ บรรพบุรษุ ผูล้ ว่ งลับ โดยมีขนมประจำ ประเพณี คือ ขนมลา ขนมเทียน ขนมพอง และ ขนมท่อนใต้ งานแข่งขันชิงเรือใบถ้วยพระราชทาน จัดขึน้ ตรงกับวันที่ 5 ธันวาคม บริเวณหาดในหาน มี เรือใบจากนานาประเทศทัว่ โลกเข้าร่วมแข่งขัน 4

Chinese New Year New Year holidays for Chinese descents of Phuket mean many auspicious activities including Gods worshiping, Dragon dance. Chinese New Year is according to Chinese lunar calendar. Thao Thep Kasattri and Thao Sri Sunthorn Festival 13 March every year marks the date of the heroic acts of Phuketâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s two heroines had defended the city from enemy. Turtle Release Tradition This means to conserve sea turtles, so there are a number of organised turtle hatchling release events in various beaches around Island on 13 April every year. Seafood Festival It takes place in May with all the lively parades and booths and stalls from top seafood restaurants and outlets.

Moon Worship Festival The festive holiday is observed by the worship of the Moon by moon cakes and other Chinese treats on full moon night of the 8th month on Chinese lunar calendar. Vegetarian Festival The festival can be during September to October. Phuketians will worship gods and have only vegetarian diets. Their local deity images are taken, decorated, and paraded on the main streets. 10th month Feast The tradition is to express gratitude to dead ancestors by worshipping of certain traditional Chinese treats. Phuket Kingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cup Regatta This grand event is held on 5 December at Nai Harn Beach and has been participated by many leading international yachts. 5

Saikaew â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Mai Khao Beach These two connecting beaches are the longest stretch of beach in in the Island. During November to February, it is the season that sea turtle will lay their eggs on this beach. Nai Yang Beach This beach situates in National Park, and is popular for camping and picnicking. Nai Thon Beach The tranquil beach has been ranked best for sunbathing. Bang Tao Beach This open beach is rather windy, so it is ideal for surfers and sailors. It hosts an annual event of Laguna Phuket Triathlon in December. Kamala Beach This beach is for those who enjoy snorkelling and scuba diving as well as this is a chance to appreciate local Muslim fishermen communities. Patong Beach Patong never sleeps with its daytime water sport activities and a vividly glowing nightlife along the beach line.

Kata-Karon Beach These two sister beaches are ideal to for those enjoy the sea with their powder like sand beach evenly throughout the beach. Rawai Beach The beach offers nice restaurants along the line of beach where one can enjoy the feast with sea view. Chalong Bay It is known for its viewpoint as well as piers and marina. It is a hub connecting to other smaller islands. Phi Phi Island Phi Phi is one of the finest diving sites in Andaman Sea with a pristine coral reef. Siray Island The Island is home the biggest fisherman community in Phuket. Prom Thep Cape This is the best view point to enjoy the most majestic sunset view of the Island. 7

This old house was constructed in later in the reign of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), at the turn of last century in Sino-Portuguese architecture, first of its style in Phuket. The owner was Prapitak Chinpracha and the estate has been inherited to later generations of family to the late Mr. Pracha Tantavanich, and now ‘Aunty Dang’ Mrs. Charoonrat Tantavanich, the wife of Mr. Pracha. The estate is open to public to revisit the glamorous past of Phuket. All materials were imported during the high time of trade via Penang – floor tiles from Italy, wall bricks from The Netherlands, furniture is inheritance from old generation. This house is also last of its kinds which can maintain the interiors of an old Phuketian family house intact.

Life in Phuket Australian designer has lived in Phuket for already 12 years. He owns ‘Underwood’, a furniture shop with interior decoration items and sculptures locating on Chalerm Prakiat road in Phuket City. First thing coming to mind when mentioning ‘Phuket’ Rich environment of the Island, because my design work involves recycling leftover materials to be more useful, to be a brand new product that works again. Phuketian’s Charm Phuketians can look quite serious but they are indeed friendly. Thai friends I have here in Phuket really confirm me that I have made a right decision to move here. Favourite place in Phuket I like to come to my shop because I like working.

Here we have Underwood Factory as well. I always have dinner out. Last night I went to ‘Savoey’ at Patong Beach, the food was just delicious. We always wear that to the important social and traditional events including Baba-yaya styled fashion I wore in my wedding day. Phuketian’s Charm Phuketains are friendly and easy to make friends. All locals know each other well and still use many local particular words in our daily conversation. I love Phuket because Phuket is not a big province with lots of people. People mostly know each other. Foods are unique and we have traditions and festivals that bond us together like Phuket Vegetarian Festival. Even some Phuketians might move away, but they will return to join these important festivals.

Life in Phuket I was born in Phuket, am growing up along with Kan Eang @ Pier, the famous restaurant by Chalong Bay which is family business. First thing coming to mind when mentioning ‘Phuket’ Sea is what I think of. My family usually goes picnicking at Koh Hae (Coral Island) which has white sandy beach and hornbills which is a prime indicator for the best nature condition of the Island. Krabi road Residence and business premise of Laung Anupas Phuketkarn and mansion of Phra Pitak Chinpracha – these are two of the best kept ‘Ang Mor Lao’ in Phuket. The latter is now home of Blue Elephant Restaurant and Cooking School. Thalang road Old shop houses in SinoPortuguese style lie along the road, and are decorated in neo-classic style. First electric home appliance store, the first ‘Supermarket’ and traditional herbal drug stores are here on this great road.
