BALANCE ACHIEVED

Fall is a magical time of year. As the weather chills, October sweeps in with vibrant hues of red, orange, and yellow, colorful leaves tumbling to the ground as we make plans to pick apples or peruse pumpkins with family and friends. It creates a backdrop for the month’s most anticipated celebration— Halloween.

It’s a time when creativity and imagination run wild as children and adults dress up in costume, evoking wonderment in the youngest minds that revel in the enchantment of the holiday. So often a time to indulge, we can enjoy the sweet treats synonymous with the season without forgetting the importance of balance. A crisp Oktoberfest brew alongside a Snickers bar is a great pairing, but it doesn’t have to replace the healthful habits we’ve cultivated thus far.

Balance. It’s a key word in my life, allowing me to enjoy life’s simplest pleasures while also taking care of my body. October represents a time of health. It is Breast Cancer Awareness month, a time to celebrate those who have fought the battle, remember those who lost it, and encourage awareness for women (and the occasional man) to put health on the front burner, remembering regular check-ups, early detection, and supporting organizations that provide vital resources and services for patients and survivors.

Women’s health is a multifaceted concept that encompasses physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Incorporating selfcare practices into our routine can help us stay healthy even in the time of year when sickness tends to knock us down. Whether it’s an annual mammogram or a bi-monthly facial, any form of self-care is a step in the direction of prioritizing health.

Whether you’re savoring a pumpkin-spiced treat or embarking on a scenic hike amidst nature’s kaleidoscope of colors, let us do it with a renewed commitment to health, a promise to care for ourselves as much as we care for others—an important reminder for the women in our lives who so often don’t prioritize themselves.

Warm regards,

LAST THOUGHTS

WICKED WINE STROLL

Gather your witches and hit the town; Lodi’s Wicked Wine Stroll brings a flavor of festive cheer to the streets of Lodi on October 14. Twenty or more local wineries will partner with downtown stores to bring the bounty of the vineyards to one central—and spooky—location. Purchase tickets to taste wines from participating vendors, sample sweet treats, and shop special sales. Blend Ultra Lounge hosts the after party.

COLORFUL HOLIDAY

Halloween may typically be marked by orange, purple, and black décor, but a rainbow of color has been infused into the holiday to create safe trick or treating for all. It all started with a teal pumpkin, used to signify houses had nonfood treats available for those with food allergies, or that a child would prefer a non-food treat. Today, a blue pumpkin may signal a child carrying it has autism and purple is for epilepsy awareness.

CARRINGTON / D BY SOPHIA ELLE

It is a momentous accomplishment when a cancer warrior can emerge on the other side of the battle as victorious. Marguerite Toliver is one such warrior, and her battle and journey is nothing short of miraculous. Even during the occasion of our interview, Marguerite was gearing up for surgery connected to her cancer journey.

In a very matter-of-fact way, Marguerite describes her latest surgery as one that is following a breast reconstruction from years ago, and she has since had her breast implants removed and replaced multiple times. Marguerite explains, “I was 22 when I had surgery, and that was in 1962. I had a tumor in my breast, and they noticed it when I was 15. Of course, at that time it wasn’t being considered as cancerous and it wasn’t until

later when I was 22 when I was having it removed that they discovered the cancer cells.”

She was thrust into the role of fighting cancer at a young age. In retrospect, she considers herself fortunate because of the thoughtfulness of her surgeon at the time. “He just decided I was too young to do a radical mastectomy,” says Marguerite. “He felt that it was so contained, and the margin was large enough that he didn’t remove the breast. In most cases, they would have, without a doubt.”

they started doing mammograms and that’s when I became an advocate for women, to make sure they were checking their breasts and getting mammograms.”

Fast forward several decades and Marguerite continues to be a voice for women. “It’s front and center at all times,” she says. She works with other women, including friends, women she doesn’t know, and others who have been referred to her because she had a unique cancer experience. Marguerite has spoken extensively on TV and radio and participated in speaker panels to help bring an experienced viewpoint.

In one example that is indicative of how she shares her knowledge, Marguerite is supporting a friend who has finished chemotherapy and getting ready to start radiation treatment. “What I do is create a complete Excel spreadsheet for family and friends to participate in... It’s a process because all women need support.” Information on the spreadsheet includes dates of treatments, injections, medical trips, the need for food and food delivery, transportation needs, and general support. Sometimes, Marguerite juggles multiple spreadsheets in efforts to support more women battling breast cancer.

“I kind of walk them through from a layman’s point of view. I don’t give medical advice at all,” Marguerite explains. “Once you get a cancer diagnosis, most people are torn to pieces, and that’s the reaction you normally get when you get breast cancer. You can get other kinds of cancer. But women especially... They don’t take it the same way as they do with breast.”

“You can get other kinds of cancer. But women especially... They don’t take it the same way as they do with breast.”

“I became an advocate, even though many people weren’t talking about breast cancer at the time,” Margarite says. “Later on,

In addition to encouraging women to get second and third medical opinions, she likes to suggest to women who have been diagnosed with cancer to get into a good support group. As Marguerite points out, some women, whether they are married or not, simply don’t have the support of a partner, and it is important to be with other women who are going through the same experiences in their cancer journey. On the flip side of that, Marguerite also likes to talk to women’s partners to convey the importance of support. “My husband has been an outspoken advocate for breast cancer, and he talks to men about supporting women and supporting the partner and anyone who has cancer,” finishes Marguerite.

THE GREAT PUMPKIN of Lodi

BEATTIE’S PUMPKIN WEIGHS IN AT OVER 1300 POUNDS

Ashton Beattie is growing a 1,300+ pound pumpkin in Lodi. At one point in the growing season, it was gaining 45 pounds per day, and since has settled somewhere around 20-25 pounds “I’m hoping it’ll weigh over 1500 pounds by the time I take it to the weigh off,” Ashton says, adding he had almost a month left to add those extra 200 pounds at the time of our early September interview.

The large pumpkin is one of two Ashton is growing. The second weighed in 200 pounds behind the first, hitting 1,100 pounds one month ago. “I’ve been growing giant pumpkins off and on for 11 years,” Ashton shares.  “I took my first pumpkin to the Elk Grove weighoff in 2012 when I was 11 [years old], and It weighed 572.5 pounds.”

A string of bad luck has kept Ashton from attending another weigh in since.

“There's no one secret to growing a massive pumpkin, you have to get just about everything right, and even then there's no guarantee you won't be hit with bad weather or disease,” Ashton says. “Soil is one of the biggest considerations if you want to grow a prize-winning pumpkin.”

When Ashton first started growing pumpkins he lived in Stockton. He grew his first porch pumpkin in 300 square feet in Stockton. “The Stockton clay was very nice to grow in, but the sandy loam in Lodi has its own advantages, and when paired with lots of compost is ideal for growing giant pumpkins,” he says. With more property in rural Lodi, he is able to dedicate 500-1000 square feet per pumpkin plant, giving it room to stretch out its hundreds of jumbosized leaves, which feed the pumpkin. “Every leaf counts when you're trying to break a record.”

Ashton says this pumpkin is by far the largest he’s ever grown, and the success came as a surprise to the University of the Pacific computer engineering major. “It was a late pollination on a small plant... It wasn't until the pumpkin was 20 days old that I measured it and realized it was bigger than anything I'd ever grown at that point.”

Ashton plans to keep growing pumpkins at his parents’ house for another year or two until he has to turn his attention to starting a career after college where he’s part of the UOP solar car team and plays the saxophone.

Q & A:

MAKEUP TRENDS TO GIVE YOU BRIGHT EYES, BIG LIPS AND A GLOWING FACE

Professional Makeup Artist Aisha White

(who has been working in the industry for over 18 years, 15 of which were with MAC Cosmetics, before becoming her own boss) fills us in on current beauty trends every woman should know.

WHAT IS THE ONE THING THAT YOU CAN’T LEAVE THE HOUSE WITHOUT?

Blush! Blush can transform your face [by] making it brighter. Truth be told, if you have nothing on your skin but you have blush on, you still look put together.

WHAT'S THE SECRET TO MAKING OUR EYES APPEAR BIGGER AND BRIGHTER?

Lashes are a big part of that. While big lashes are still in, many are focusing on growing natural lashes longer, using lash serums instead of fake lashes.

To make your eyes pop if you have a lighter complexion, you should try brown or even purple eyeliner and mascara – you’ll be surprised how bright they can make your eyes look. Additionally, if you want to wear eyeliner, don’t wrap it all the way around the eye. If you wear eyeliner on the bottom lash line, try to put a thin line underneath the lashes, not on the waterline, to help expand and give the appearance of bigger eyes.

HOW

CAN WE ACHIEVE THE LOOK OF FULL LIPS WITH MAKE-UP?

Lighter and glossier colors can help brighten and make your lips appear fuller without resorting to lip filler. It’s also very in vogue to wear dark lip liner with lighter lipstick.

HOW CAN WE MAKE OUR SKIN GLOW?

Naturally healthy skin is in. Focus your efforts on creating beautiful skin with a full regimen that is tailored to your unique composition and needs instead of relying on foundation.

Quick tips to get started include using sunscreen, double washing your face, using clean products, and using eye cream daily. Do your research – figure out your unique needs (is your skin oily or dry, for example) and then buy products accordingly. Don’t just buy something that you’ve seen an influencer say works great.

HAUNTED MOKELUMNE HILL

FRIENDLY FACES AND GHOSTS CALL THIS SMALL TOWN HOME

Want to follow some of the stories to their graves? MokeHill.org/ history/cemeteries has a listing of inhabitants.

Mokelumne Hill, oft referred to as Moke Hill by locals, has a story steeped in Gold Rush history. A bustling town in the 1850s, nary 700 people call it home today. That is, of course, not counting the spirits that allegedly zoom around. Want to explore Moke Hill? We have an itinerary perfect for fall that includes a few ghost stories.

Hotel Leger: If you’re staying overnight, these are your digs; there’s not exactly a lot of options in the small town. The big yellow building acts as the centerpiece of downtown, and includes a restaurant, bar and quaint rooms for overnights. You’ll enjoy the Victorian feel of the accommodations, but keep in mind a few familiar faces died in this building, and some say they come back to greet guests. Ghost Adventures has even been here.

Not sure you believe? Ask the staff to tell you about their own experiences with the former owner, George Leger, his mistress, and the gaggle of child ghosts that like to cause mayhem in the saloon.

Expert Tip: Ask for room 7—if you dare. Shutter Tree Park: Moke Hill was once home to many Chinese immigrants, some that fled with the bones of their loved ones, leaving behind less personal cultural artifacts. The mural at Shutter Tree Park includes pieces of many of those items, plus images that pay tribute to the Chinese history intertwined with the town.

Kids can play on the playground or slip into the library where librarians have more tales to share. If you’re chasing ghosts, walk across the street to the Chinatown Gardens. Then, take a peek at some of the burned and reconstructed

buildings with plaques outside. Expert Tip: peruse it all with a cup of coffee from Moke-A-Java in hand, served at the Moke Hill Nuts and Candies shop next door to Hotel Leger.

Hang amongst the living: On weekends, Renegade Winery is the town’s hotspot. Come in for brunch, lunch, or dinner. Most weekends feature live music. Or enjoy small batch cider at Prosperity Ciderworks. The story here may not include any ghosts but it does involve one man on a mission to wrangle wild apples from gnarled and neglected nearby trees.

BLUEPRINT for SUCCESS

FIT OWNER LAUNCHES FACTORY FOUNDATION NONPROFIT

When Tim Brown was 12, his dad sat him down. A proud worker at the General Mills factory in Lodi, he wanted his son to have a life plan. “I already knew what I wanted to do,” says Tim, a warm smile radiating from his brown eyes. “I wanted to play Division I Athletics, graduate from college, play pro ball, and then open up my own gym in my hometown.”

Even when the going got tough, Tim stuck to the plan. He trained hard during high school and was awarded a full scholarship to Temple University in Philadelphia, and, after that, Tim was drafted into the Canadian Football League. After reaching many of

his goals, he prayed. And he looked back to the blueprints— the plans he had made for his gym throughout his life’s journey.

He was inspired to call his gym The Factory. “We want to build athletes. Or taxpaying citizens. Or just good, wholesome people.” Its full name is FIT, or Factory Institute of Training. Even after he launched FIT and it flourished, Tim wasn’t done. “How do I reach people beyond these four walls of the gym?” he wondered with his friend and business partner, Lavell Henderson.

The nonprofit they built, the Factory Foundation, does just that. It offers free physical fitness programs in 3540 local schools that teach self-discipline, healthy nutrition habits, and a good mindset to youth fortifying them for the challenges they will face in life.

“We can teach kids at an early age how to handle struggles, how to survive during difficult times,” Tim says.

“We use fitness and education and education to propel our kids and athletes to the next level.”

Factory Foundation also runs an array of sports opportunities for boys and girls, all as a tool to inspire them to do their best.

The Factory Foundation also quietly provides blankets and food to homeless residents and housing for young athletes chasing their dreams.

As we wrapped up our interview, Tim had a special request. “Can I thank my team of employees in the gym and the schools? God has steered me with a great team.”

It’s safe to say Tim’s blueprints— both literal and proverbial—were built. And the plan he had at 12, wasn’t a bad plan at all.

THE WORLD FAMOUS Clown Motel:

NEVADA’S SCARIEST ROAD TRIP ATTRACTION

America’s “scariest motel” is what nightmares are made of, and since it opened in 1985, the horror has only gotten more real.

Built on the edge of Tonopah, Nevada, on the western outskirts of the state, about four hours south of Reno and due east of Lake Mono, The World Famous Clown Motel leans heavily into its eerie reputation.

The 31-room motel has continued to lure visitors after

36 OCTOBER 2023 | SJMAG.COM upfront209

new owners, Hame Anand and his brother Vijay Mehar, took control in 2019 and fully embraced its nightmarish theme. The motel earned recognition for featuring more than 3,000 clown dolls and artworks inside its lobby and rooms. In a town with a population of 2,192, Tonopah has more clowns than people thanks to the motel and its owners.

The brothers also began soliciting clown and horror film paraphernalia from the public to further adorn the desert novelty. The response was overwhelming. Over 500 donations poured in and as a result, the motel lobby is overflowing with clown dolls, mannequins, Halloween decor, small toys, paintings, and more. People continue to drop off clown relics to this day—a woman recently donated 850 pieces from her own collection— forcing the brothers to open a storage room to stash items that haven’t yet made it to the showroom.

The outpouring of attention

culminates a passion for clowns and motels that began when Anand was 14 and started collecting clown miscellanea. He and his brother come from a hotelier family with ties to Las Vegas and purchased the hotel from long-time owners Bill and Deborah Perchetti. The motel debuted in 1985 when brotherand-sister Leroy and Leona David opened the establishment next to the cemetery where their father, another avid clown collector, was laid to rest. It was his collection of 150 clown treasures that started the venture.

The Old Tonopah Cemetery shares a border with the motel. Rainbow polka dots splashed over the motel’s sides are visible from the headstones. The motel is impossible to miss from the town’s main drag, located on Main Street and boasting not only a large and lighted The Clown Motel sign but also a wooden Ronald-McDonald-esque greeter that waves to you from the front of the bright yellow building, red hair ablaze.

If you've ever wanted to stir awake afraid in the middle of the night, the Clown Motel is the destination for you. Each guest room is brimming with clown decor, not to mention the thousands housed in the lobby. While the bulk feature more generic clown motifs, the new owners have begun to give movie-themed makeovers to the other rooms.

The re-designed lodgings don paintings of Jason (from Friday the 13th) holding a chainsaw or a room

dedicated entirely to the clown Pennywise from Stephen King's It. If the other accommodations gave you the heebie-jeebies, try sleeping with a menacing Pennywise portrait above your bed.

The upside is, if you’re not brave enough to sleep there, you can see much of the hotel’s charm from the lobby, which is open to guests. In addition to the clown collection, there is plenty of memorabilia (t-shirts, stickers, and magnets) to commemorate your visit. Hame is often working the counter, offering up the perfect opportunity to ask about the hotel’s history.

Among the collectibles are movie posters from motion pictures filmed on location, including a trio of direct-to-video horror films available on Amazon Prime. That’s only the tip of the iceberg though for the location’s Hollywood presence. The Clown Motel has also been featured on Travel Channel’s Ghost Adventures as well as over 100 documentaries and shorts available on YouTube. The Curse of the Clown Motel is due later this year. Hame himself was featured as an extra in a couple of the films.

Creepy clowns aside, the motel has an illusive backstory. The cemetery next door is filled with more than 300 graves; many buried here lost their lives in one of two large mine fires or to disease in the 1800s. Graves are haphazardly arranged and many have old stuffed animals and other relics left at their headstones. Most include details on how each person died and their age; a surprising number of children were laid to rest here, marked by rocks that outline the tinier gravesites. A walking tour map details backgrounds of some of the cemetery’s residents, and you can grab a copy at many of the hotels, museums, or the Tonopah Town Office before traipsing through the unlocked gate.

STOCKTON ASTRONAUT INSPIRES FEATURE FILM

Jose Hernandez, a Central Valley native who grew up in a family of migrant farm workers, always dreamed of being an astronaut. “In those days, Apollo was a big deal and I really got very, very motivated when I saw the very last man to walk on the moon,” Jose says. After learning English at age 12, receiving his bachelor’s in electrical engineering from University of the Pacific and a master’s in electrical and computer engineering from UC Santa Barbara, and 11 failed attempts at joining NASA, Jose finally succeeded, proving perseverance always wins out. His life’s greatest career ambition was realized and in 2011, after shuttling to space on Space Shuttle Discovery in 2009, he retired. His story, however, was far from being over.

If you ask Jose today, his life has come full circle. He’s moved to Manteca from Houston, Tex. and spends much of his time working a plot of farmland between Lodi and Acampo, at least when he isn’t consulting on projects with NASA. Although he tried his whole

life to have a career in space—and succeeded—he came back to the Central Valley as a first generation Mexican American farmer, a father to five kids, and a husband. He plans to build a retirement home on Jahant Road, as well as a tasting facility where he can share his wines from Tierra Luna Cellars with guests. “My true calling is I love the outdoors and I have a vineyard and I work my vineyard,” he says.

Jose has also landed amongst a different kind of stars, this time of the Hollywood variety. His personal story is on display as part of an inspirational biopic about his professional and personal trials and triumphs. The movie of his life, named A Million Miles Away, is available on Amazon Prime. Michael Pena was cast as Jose, and Jose says it was he who recommended him originally after seeing his work in The Martian alongside Matt Damon. The film features a team of Hispanic professionals, including Director Alejandra

Márquez Abella and actress Rosa Salazar, and was filmed in Mexico City. “It was very important To keep it real, which is why I was very ecstatic and happy that they had selected [Abella] as the director… she understands the cultural sensitivities and put them on the screen beautifully, tastefully.”

The film follows Jose from his young life in Stockton to his success at NASA.

Jose says the film drives home the idea that, “the American dream is alive and well and that anything is possible in this great country of ours if we’re willing to work hard for it.” He also says A Million Miles Away promotes education as the great equalizer.

“I was very honored that Michael Pena said yes to the project because he was our first choice,” Jose says. And Pena did his homework, holding several Zoom sessions with Jose before filming began

so he could nail the character. Jose also flew to set to meet Michael in person. He says they established a great working relationship, and Jose’s running joke was that Michael may be a great actor, but Jose is better looking.

Jose also says he believes Michael’s real-life experience as a first generation Mexican American helped him understand the complexities of the role.

“It’s going to empower and inspire folks to reach their maximum potential,” says Jose, who has already seen the film several times. “I’m hoping this movie… will hopefully [generate] some buzz around awards time in several of these categories… it’s that good.” Dare we say, A Million Miles Away is out of this world?

As in any biopic, Hollywood takes some creative license, but Jose says the majority of the story stays true to

the facts. The big changes included his cousin’s character, who was really more of a melding of three different people in Jose’s life. “They play around with the timelines as well, but all that is so they can fit the movie and it has a good flow for those two hours,” he explains.

The basis of the story and its central theme remains intact. According to Jose, they did not embellish his efforts or struggles to join the space program. Watching Rosa play his wife, Jose says was like watching his wife in real life. “Rosa played my wife to the T.”

At the end of August, the film began premiering at several one-night-only events including a screening at the UOP campus and another at the Mosaic Museum in Sacramento on behalf of the Mexican Consulate. It hit Amazon Prime, Amazon’s streaming platform, on September 15.

A LEGACY OF Pumpkins

PERRY & SONS HAS BEEN FARMING IN SJC SINCE 1926

Perry & Sons’ history stretches back nearly 100 years to the early days of Manteca. And the more things change, the more they stay the same. The family-owned business has grown considerably in the past century, but remains committed to farming, families, the community, and being stewards of the earth.

The farm was founded nearly 100 years ago by Delphino Perry, who originally came to America in 1906 from the Azores Islands near Portugal. He started in Oakland and worked his way to Manteca where he launched a dairy. “What we advertise is that we started doing business as a watermelon company in 1926,” says Art Perry, who is Delphino’s grandson and

42 OCTOBER 2023 | SJMAG.COM
COMMUNITY

actively involved in running the company today, along with other members of the family. The owners now include Art, his brother George Jr., their wives, Karen Widmer (Art’s daughter), Ron Perry (Art’s oldest son), and George M. Perry (Art’s nephew). “Gail Perry, my brother’s wife, is known throughout the country. She’s our head salesperson and everyone knows her!”

Today, Perry & Sons is best known for its seeded and seedless watermelons. In fact, there are not many suppliers of seeded watermelons in existence anymore. Now that it’s fall, Perry & Sons is rolling out its massive supply of pumpkins, its other star crop. “We do a lot of pumpkins,” says Art with a laugh. “We’re very big into the Halloween business and we’re really busy in October!”

“We actually have growers that grow pumpkins for us, and at one time we were the grower. Now we have growers that grow with us.

SJMAG.COM | OCTOBER 2023 43

We’re involved with the growers to guide them and direct them in what we want done, and which varieties to grow, and all of that,” Art continues.

One of the biggest draws, particularly in October, is Perry’s Market, located on Highway 99. “The market has become something really special for our family as we look toward the future because we have all kinds of things in there,” says Art. There is an abundance of fruits, vegetables, and snacks. And just in time for the holidays, there are pies. “One of our biggest sellers are fresh pies,” explains Art. “In October, we have lots of pumpkin pies and we also have a pumpkin maze and fun activities for the kids to do.”

Perry & Sons has grown as a company and always keeps its customers in mind. “We’re a company involved in farming, and we procure products 365 days a year,” Art explains. “We’re never out of watermelons! As long as there are some kinds of watermelons or seedless watermelons somewhere in the United States or in Mexico, we’ll have them!”

Even in the wintertime when certain produce items like watermelons are not typically available elsewhere, Perry & Sons will have them in stock. “We’re obligated to bring product in, and we haven’t missed a lick,” says Art.

This season’s other fruits and vegetables available through Perry & Sons include peaches, apricots, lemons, oranges, avocado, summer squash, beets, cucumbers, and onions.

Over the years, Perry & Sons has made a lot of contacts, and keeping positive relations with suppliers has proved fruitful (pun intended). “It’s all about relationships. In the winter, we pay big money for these loads... So, we’re talking a lot of money, but we have to take care of our customers. We’re proud of that and we want to advertise that we take care of our customers, 365 days a year, in this area.”

Some of the products come from the Phoenix and Yuma area and they help supply Perry & Sons for the massive demand of watermelons around 4th of July. Having suppliers in different areas

44 OCTOBER 2023 | SJMAG.COM

also helps when a particular supplier falls short on a product or has some other issue. And on the other side of the relationship, Perry & Sons will move the product that it promises to buy from its suppliers.

Art spends much of his workday bouncing between tasks. He observes two growing areas on the farm, estimating when they will be ready to harvest. Then, he’ll head back into the office to do cost analysis. Recognizing that the family ownedand-operated business is managed with a lean and streamlined team, he has also been working to ensure that his son and daughter are cross-trained in all farm and business matters. It can be dicey working with family members, especially when it pertains to a family-owned business. But the Perry family business is built on a foundation of solid rock. “We've never had a problem with that! And you know what the secret is? We’re Jesus believers. As long as we are believers, he is our ‘go to’ guy. So, if you get a little tense or something, you go to Him and you ask for guidance, and he calms the storm. Then, that way, we can function and think correctly.”

TOP TEN Skin Trends

PROMOTING YOUTHFUL, HEALTHY SKIN AT EVERY AGE

Skin is the largest organ of the body and a primary factor in how we look and feel. Taking good care of your skin is essential to health and happiness. We sat down with experts from four dermatology labs and discovered the top trends in women’s skincare. Here’s what they had to say.

1. Preventative skincare is in.

We see that people are taking steps to great skin, younger. Women in their twenties and thirties are already starting to use medical grade skin enhancements, which is termed “prejunvenation” instead of rejuvenation. Invest in medical-grade or at least sciencebacked products versus drug store, celebrity, or influencer endorsed items.

46 OCTOBER 2023 | SJMAG.COM

“Investing in medicalgrade skincare ensures we are getting enough of the essential ingredients like glycolic acid, vitamin C, retinoids, and SPF. I provide skin coaching with ZO Skin Health line created by Dr. Zien Obagi. He is a famous dermatologist in Los Angeles and all his products are extensively studied, tested, and protocol driven. They are truly transformative products,” says Brittany Luiz, family nurse practitioner and owner of Goldie & Co. Skin Medicine.

2. Nonsurgical laser treatments are taking the lead.

“I recommend the Clear and Brilliant® Laser Skin Enhancement. One 15-20 minute treatment can leave your skin feeling smoother, looking younger, and with a radiant glow,” says Sahar Khourdaji, an esthetician with Golden State Dermatology. With routine treatment, it can deliver lasting results. This non-invasive treatment requires little to no down time and can improve overall skin tone and texture, while also reducing the appearance of pores.

SJMAG.COM | OCTOBER 2023 47

3. Thinking beyond the box, with Botox.

Traditionally, Botox has been used to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles on foreheads and around eyes, but we are now seeing it being used for the reduction of lines and wrinkles everywhere.

“Now, most of my patients use Botox around their mouths, chins, and sometimes necks. This will decrease, and possibly prevent, a lot of aging challenges and decrease the amount of filler or other treatments needed in the future,” advises Brittany. “I would say there is now less emphasis on being frozen and more emphasis on opening the eyes and preventing or correcting heaviness in the lower face.”

4. Filler isn’t just for your lips.

Filler is now also being used to give your entire face more structure. You can use it to lift cheeks, contour your jawline, and define your chin. “Dermal fillers, made from hyaluronic acid, are used to plump and add volume to areas like the cheeks, lips, and jawline,” says Katie Acosta of Lux Dermatology.

Brittany adds, “Over time, the bones in our face become more recessed, losing their shape and structure. We lose collagen, so our skin becomes thinner, and our fat pads separate, thin out, and fall. These changes happen all over our face. The best way to make cosmetic injectables look natural is to take a patient’s entire face into consideration so that it all matches, creating balance and harmony.”

48 OCTOBER 2023 | SJMAG.COM

5.Collagen is still key.

We know that collagen is a primary factor in youthful looking skin. There are several popular collagenenhancing treatments available, including microneedling and Sculptura.

“Microneedling provides more superficial changes, improving textures of the skin and strengthening the skin to help with things like fine lines, acne, and surgical scars,” says Brittany.

“Sculptura is a breakthrough treatment that redefines skin rejuvenation beyond traditional fillers. It triggers collagen production when skillfully injected into targeted areas, fostering a gradual yet remarkable improvement in skin texture, elasticity, and tone. Its transformative power lies in its ability to stimulate your body’s natural collagen synthesis, offering longer lasting and more authentic enhancement,” explains Gifty Aidoo, NP, owner and lead injector of Aesthetic Lab.

6.Skin removal surgery is becoming more prevalent.

Loose skin is common after major weight loss. Ozempic, the medical weight-loss injectable treatment that has taken over Hollywood, has had a part in the uptick we’re now seeing in skin removal surgeries.

“When large amounts of weight are lost quickly, as we are seeing with this medication, the skin has trouble retracting. This leaves loose skin in the face, breasts, abdomen, arms, and thighs. So, an increase in facelifts, breast lifts, arm lifts, tummy tucks, and thigh lifts are bound to happen,” says Brittany.

7. Try something new: InMode Morpheus 8Enhanced Skin Rejuvenation.

It may sound like something from a sci-fi fantasy movie, but InMode Morpheus 8 is actually a treatment that combines methods for penetrating deep into the skin and stimulating collagen production.

“InMode Morpheus

8 is a non-surgical treatment that combines microneedling with radiofrequency (RF) energy to promote skin rejuvenation and tightening. It targets various skin concerns, including wrinkles, fine lines, acne scars, and overall skin texture. The microneedles penetrate the skin, delivering RF energy deep into the dermis, stimulating collagen production and improving skin elasticity,” says Katie.

“InMode Morpheus 8 has gained immense popularity due to its ability to provide significant results without the need for surgery or extensive downtime. Women love it because it offers a customizable solution to address their specific skin concerns, helping them achieve a more youthful and radiant complexion,” Katie explains. “Moreover, the minimally invasive nature of the treatment appeals to those seeking naturallooking results without the risks associated with more invasive procedures.”

8. Treat your skin and your mind with HydraFacials.

Facials are not only good for your skin, but they also help to relax and center you, too.

“HydraFacial treatment is a transformative and all-encompassing solution that promises to reveal your skin's natural radiance. Combining the power of cleansing, exfoliation, extraction, hydration, and antioxidant protection, the HydraFacial is a multi-step process that leaves your skin revitalized, refreshed, and truly radiant,” Gifty says.

“What sets the HydraFacial apart is its hydration and infusion of nourishing serums.

Using a unique vortex technology, the treatment delivers a blend of hydrating and rejuvenating solutions deep into the skin, promoting a plump, youthful texture. The infusion of antioxidants provides an added layer of protection against environmental stressors, helping to maintain your skin's newfound glow.”

10. Platelet Rich

“Personalized skincare has become a major trend in recent years, with dermatologists and aestheticians offering tailored treatment plans based on an individual's specific skin type, concerns, and goals. These customized plans may include a combination of in-office treatments, such as chemical peels and laser therapy, along with athome skincare products,” says Katie.

All skin is unique and thus has unique needs. “By receiving targeted treatments and using skincare products suited to their skin type, they can address concerns like hyperpigmentation, acne, and aging more effectively. This empowers women to take charge of their skincare journey and invest in treatments that truly work for them,” Katie explains.

“Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) treatment epitomizes a natural approach to skin enhancement. By utilizing your body's own resources, PRF treatment offers a safe and holistic alternative to synthetic interventions. This results in a refreshed appearance that respects your unique features, avoiding the overly dramatic changes often associated with more invasive procedures,” says Gifty.

“PRF harnesses your body’s own regenerative powers to revitalize and enhance your skin’s natural beauty using your blood. PRF is rich in growth factors, cytokines, and platelets, making it a potent elixir for promoting collagen production, improving texture, and achieving a radiant complexion,” Gifty adds.

REDUCE EVERYDAY Stress

The health of our hearts is intricately bound to the health of our minds. Research has shown that individuals who experience chronic stress may experience inflammation in their arteries, plaque buildup, and other risk factors that contribute to heart disease and heart attacks. This makes stress management an important part of reducing heart disease risk.

There are a lot of methods for reducing stress in your life including meditating, therapy, and making life changes. Many of these remedies take time. Exercise, however, can begin today and greatly reduces stress—physical, emotional, and mental.

Exercise produces endorphins. These endorphins not only increase our moods, which helps to reduce stress, but also lead to better sleep, which is another surefire way to feel better day in and day out. As an added bonus, exercise also leads to

better overall physical health including weight loss, lower cholesterol, and less ailments such as diabetes—all of which are risk factors for cardiovascular disease and heart attacks.

Dr. Ramin Manshadi explores the link between exercise and heart health in his book The Wisdom of Exercise Health: Feel Better Than Ever While Protecting Yourself Against A Wide Range of Illnesses. As a practicing sport cardiologist, interventional cardiologist, and the founder and president of Manshadi Heart Institute, Inc., Dr. Manshadi is an expert in the field of heart health.

His recommendations are to start small. If you haven’t exercised in a long time, it may be necessary to consult a physician before starting a new routine to ensure you don’t overdo it. When you’re ready, commit to 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise per day (something that gets

your heart pumping). Your first exercises may be simply walking or lightly jogging. Then, work your way up to a run or a bike ride. Even activities such as weight lifting are good for the heart.

In addition to science, Dr. Manshadi’s book is steeped in personal experience, making it an accessible and relatable read for the average consumer. And as an added bonus, all of the proceeds from Dr. Manshadi’s book go to purchasing AEDS, or automated external defibrillators, devices used to assist those who go into sudden cardiac arrest

MAINTAIN A Youthful Glow

Most women want to look younger. Regardless of your beauty ideals, many take measures to protect the look, feel, and health of their skin. According to Gifty Aidoo, FNP-C, of Aesthetics Lab, the first step is to achieve a healthy glow and the second is to maintain it.

Achieving a healthy glow is possible in several ways. For many, it involves investing in a daily skincare routine that involves cleansing, moisturizing, and applying sunscreen in the morning, followed by cleansing at night. You can also use toners and serums daily. “Obagi's medical-grade skincare products can address various skin concerns, from aging to hyperpigmentation,” Gifty says. Monthly, you may consider chemical peels or microdermabrasion for exfoliation and rejuvenation. At home, exfoliation treatments and masks are a good option. Annually, laser therapy or PRP (platelet-

rich plasma) can assist with collagen stimulation.

If you need an extra boost, nonsurgical interventions include Botox (recommended every three months) to minimize fine lines and wrinkles or dermal fillers to restore volume. These two services offer faster results, often within days. “Injectable treatments are minimally invasive and have shorter recovery times [than surgery],” Gifty says. “They're great for early signs of aging.” However, if you have more severe aging concerns, a facelift may be the best course of action.

Once you’re satisfied with skin’s appearance (within reason), it’s time to maintain the look you’ve worked to achieve. Gifty’s top tips for maintaining youthful looking skin is avoiding excessive sun exposure, always wearing sunscreen, giving up bad habits such as smoking, limiting alcohol consumption, maintaining

a balanced diet, staying hydrated, getting adequate sleep, and managing stress. During any consultation, ask questions to manage expectations. Professionals should ensure clients understand the limitations of any procedure they choose to have as well as the range of possible outcomes. Some goals may take multiple session, however, with chemical peels and microdermabrasion, most people can except some results with just one session. For most skin procedures, aftercare will also play a role in results, which means following the care instructions provided by the medical professional is imperative.

“Braces are usually the most cost effective option for straightening teeth and correcting the bite,”

GET STRAIGHT TEETH on a Budget

It’s hard to deny the impact of a pleasant smile. But straight teeth can be cost prohibitive, totaling thousands of dollars to achieve. There are, however, some options that will save you a pretty penny. “Braces are usually the most cost effective option for straightening teeth and correcting the bite,” says Dr. Mickey Samra of Samra Orthodontics. “There are lots of advantages to braces besides the cost, including shorter treatment time when compared to clear aligners.” Lab costs are a big reason clear aligners tend to be more expensive.

TIPS TO SAVE MONEY: Utilize dental insurance. “The total cost for orthodontic treatment including retainers in the Stockton area is between $4,000 to $5,000,” Dr. Samra says. By accepting a large variety of dental insurances, those costs can be lowered.

ASK ABOUT FINANCING. If the amount owe is still high, Samra Orthodontics uses financing to make it affordable. The remaining balance can be financed in house with a down payment followed by monthly installments. Most down payments range between $100 and $500 with monthly payments between $100 and $300. “We try to work with every person that walks through our doors and offer extended financing and lower down payment and monthly payment options,” Dr. Samra says. “One of the biggest differentiators with our office is that we offer in house financing with zero percent interest.”

CHOOSE AN ALL-INCLUSIVE PLAN. The overall price tag on braces should include the cost of retainers. If this is a separate cost, you’ll need to add it in when comparing offices. “Make sure

there are no additional charges if the orthodontic treatment takes longer than expected or if a few braces break off during orthodontic treatment,” Dr. Samra suggests. These costs can quickly add up, and it’s not uncommon to run into small challenges along the way. You just want to know that if something does happen, you’re not shelling out additional cash.

CHOOSE THE MEDICARE Part D plan that’s right for you

As your patient profile evolves, your Medicare Part D coverage should, too. And even if your prescriptions haven’t changed recently, your drug coverage by your plan might have, so it’s a good idea to review coverage on a yearly basis. “A lot of seniors don’t realize that their Medicare Part D plan for this year may not be the best plan for them next year,” says Hammer Lane Pharmacy’s Amir Khan. “Definitely shop the various plans every year to avoid paying more next year". Luckily, annual open enrollment gives seniors the chance to ensure their coverage is up to date and tailored to their needs every October 15 to December 7.

WHAT IS MEDICARE PART D?

Medicare Part D is the Medicare coverage that covers prescription medications. It is especially important for patients with long-term and ongoing medication regimens. Each Medicare Part D plan covers a different “formulary” (a

set selection of prescription drugs). Within each formulary, medications are organized into tiers based on the cost. Dr. Khan, believes this is an important time to potentially save money and choose a better pharmacy. “This is an opportunity for patients to opt out of pharmacies that provide bad service or have long waits and choose a more personalized approach like we offer at Hammer Lane Pharmacy,” he says.

WHAT SHOULD I CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING A PLAN?

When preparing to enroll in a Medicare Part D plan, be sure to have a list of all the medications you are currently taking or anticipate taking in the coming year. In situations where brand name medications are not covered, a generic form could work instead. Make sure you understand what tier your medication is in and how much you can anticipate paying. The best place to get started is Medicare.gov. From there, you can type in your medications

and add in your pharmacy of choice. The search engine will populate the various plans starting with the least expensive plans at top and most expensive plans at the bottom.

HOW DO I APPLY FOR A MEDICARE TYPE D PLAN?

Register online (Medicare.gov) or by calling 1-800-MEDICARE. The website or representative can help explain the plans that could work for you. If you still have questions, make an appointment with Dr. Khan on the weekends in October. He sets that time aside to help his patients.

The chances of getting breast cancer at any stage of a woman’s life is about one in eight. Behind skin cancer, it is the most common type of cancer in U.S. women. “Breast cancer screening is the most reliable way to detect breast cancer early,” says Dr. Megumi Tomita, assistant physician-in-chief of medical subspecialties at Kaiser Permanente Central Valley. “Treatment for breast cancer that occurs at an earlier stage is much more likely to be successful and lead to increased survival.”

To stay on top of your breast health, commit to routine screenings. There are two types of screenings that every woman should adhere to.

MEDICAL SCREENINGS:

“Mammograms are the best screening test for women at average risk for breast cancer,” Dr. Tomita says. For most women, mammograms should start at age 50. However, depending on independent risk factors, it’s also appropriate for some women to start getting mammograms at ages 40-49. “Women in this age group should talk with their healthcare provider about when the right time is for them to start screening.”

SCREEN for BREAST CANCER

learn how your breasts normally look and feel, and to check for any lumps or changes in your breasts,” Dr. Tomita says. These at-home exams do not take the place of mammograms but they are a great supplemental tool. Self-exams, “may help identify any abnormalities in your breasts,” Dr. Tomita explains. For those with a menstrual period, the best time to check is about one week after your period begins to avoid tenderness. You should always check at about the same time each month.

lumps, discoloration, changes in breast size or shape, or changes in skin condition such as dimpling, puckering, or inflammation, you should contact your healthcare provider.

SELF-SCREENING:

In addition to annual mammograms, women should self-screen monthly.

“The purpose of self-exams is to

“Not all lumps in your breast may indicate cancer. There are other conditions that may cause lumps or swelling such as hormonal changes, injury, or cysts,” Dr. Tomita explains. If you notice any change in your breasts including discharge,

Eye Health

What’s your favorite childhood memory? Think about the impact each of your five senses had on that moment. Maybe you recall the smell of freshly baked cookies or the sound of the ocean, but chances are what stands out most about that moment are the things that you saw.

Our ability to see the world around us dictates our ability to interact with it. The way we learn, communicate, work, and go about our daily lives are dependent upon having healthy eyes and clear vision. Yet, somehow eye health is often overlooked and changes in vision go unaddressed throughout life.

Fortunately, many eye conditions are preventable or treatable, starting at a young age. At Zeiter Eye Medical Group, routine eye care ensures any vision changes are addressed and developing eye conditions can be caught

early. “Children should have a vision screening by age four, even if the child has no complaints,” says Dr. John Zeiter, the managing physician at Zeiter Eye Medical Group. “Young adults should be checked every year if they wear glasses or contacts and adults over 40 should be seen by their eye doctor at least every two years to check for glaucoma, cataracts, and retinal problems.”

As Dr. Zeiter mentioned, vision problems can start early and often have no obvious symptoms. In fact, vision problems are growing among preschool-aged children, a trend that

is only expected to continue. Luckily, the most common problems can be corrected with glasses and can help head off any vision-related learning problems.

Eyesight will continue to change through puberty and teen years, stabilizing in the mid- to late-twenties. But eyes naturally start to change again with age, particularly between 40 and 50. For most people this just means reading glasses, but more serious conditions can develop with age, even if you’ve had great vision all your life.

Some eye problems that appear later in life can run in families, such as glaucoma, a degenerative condition where pressure on the optic nerve results in vision loss. Other conditions are complications of existing health problems, like diabetic retinopathy where perpetually high blood sugar levels damage the blood vessels at the back of the eye, leading to vision loss. While neither of these conditions can be cured or the damage reversed, they are manageable if caught early by your eye doctor

ACHIEVE NATURAL RESULTS with Injectables

Injectables are becoming more and more accessible. No longer a luxury for celebrity clients only, Botox, Juvéderm, and other products are used by the average woman (and some men). While some results look over-the-top, it is possible to achieve a natural, youthful look with injectables. So, what’s the secret?

WHO YOU HIRE MATTERS

Because certificates can be achieved after limited coursework, it’s important to work with someone who prioritizes injectables in their business. “A certified aesthetic nurse specialist (CANS)… is someone who has worked under the supervision of a board certified plastic surgeon or dermatologist and passed a national exam. That type of certification means something,” says Brittany Luiz of Goldie & Co. Skin Medicine, who has that

certification. “The best way to find an injector [is] by word of mouth or a personal referral.”

PRIORITIZE SKIN HEALTH

While injectables are most often used to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and offer plump, youngerlooking skin, the results will appear best when your skin is healthy. “Your injectables are only as good as your skin care,” Brittany says. “If you have acne, melasma, sun damage, etc., treating the health of your skin barrier should be prioritized.” Wearing sunscreen daily and applying SPF on your chest, as well, will not only protect your investment but also help the overall impact appear more natural.

UNDERSTAND PROCEDURES AND EXPECTATIONS.

“Before you invest in any injectables, understand what they are and what they do,” Brittany warns. Injectables and

facelifts offer different results and one isn’t a substitute for the other.

TREAT THE WHOLE FACE.

“Having a frozen forehead but very active muscles around the eyes does not look natural. Also, do not neglect the lower face,” says Brittany. “Treating the upper third of the face and leaving the lower face untouched also looks unnatural.” Temples are another “don’t-miss” area.

START EARLY.

If you want “help aging,” don’t wait until your dissatisfied to start seeking help. The earlier, the better. "Pre-juvenation, as I like to call it, is always easier than rejuvenation,” Brittany says.

Through precise radiation therapy and precision oncology, your care team is able to target your treatment with little collateral damage. With recent advancements in technology, radiology now has less side effects and less impact to the patient due to this precision therapy.

“It is not just about the treatment, but everything that affects your treatment – nutrition, social work, a support group,” says Art Hill, Cancer Center director at St. Joseph’s Medical Center. The navigators follow the patients before, during, and after the treatment to ensure they get the resources that they need. The St. Joseph’s Cancer Center offers a holistic approach to treatment, providing nutritional services, social services, and nurse navigation to help facilitate your healing—mind, body, and soul.

In 1998 while helping establish the Central California Dental Surgery Center in Atwater, California, Dr. Pankaj Patel had been building his private practice and found a desperate need for pediatric dental surgery centers in the Central Valley. With profound ambition, Dr. Pankaj Patel started developing and building Salida Surgery Center in 2004. This led to eventually opening the doors in 2005 with his business partner and brother Dr. Shailesh Patel, whom already had over 13 years of successful dental offices in the Los Angeles area. Together over the last 17 years, they have taken a hand in caring for over 35,000 pediatric patients in the Central Valley alone.

Their family-owned pediatric dental surgery center provides full mouth dental restoration for children ranging from 1 ½ years old up to 12 years old. Salida Surgery Center is reliant on a tight-knit referral network with local Dental offices throughout California. With the facility being easily accessible off of highway 99, it makes Salida Surgery Center an ideal care center for patients coming from long distances. Salida Surgery Center provides the pediatric community with safe and ethical dental treatment under general anesthesia with their professional team of Dentists, Dental Anesthesiologists, Registered Nurses, and Dental Assistants.

Four Seasons of Fun

BEND OREGON GETAWAYS ARE GOOD YEAR ROUND 
ESCAPE
ALT

Whether the leaves are changing in fall, the fresh powder is falling in winter, the waterfalls are raging in spring, or the warm weather is calling summer visitors to jump in, Bend, Ore. has something spectacular to offer for every season. Located just over three hours from Portland, Bend is an outdoorsman’s paradise due to its position on the Deschutes river, west of the lakes and peaks of the Cascade Mountains, and in the shadow of Mount Bachelor. Book a long weekend any time of year and opt outside, racing from rural mornings to leisurely afternoons spent eating, drinking, and playing games throughout the city.

BEND’S BEST

Most who head here are looking to get outdoors. Whether you want to take the trail out of town to Pilot Butte, the area’s extinct volcano, or hitch a ride down the Deschutes River in a vessel of your choosing, you can do it all in Bend, and only Bend. Wanderlust Tours is the main outfitter for outdoor exploration in Bend, and one of the city’s more unique features is its underground caves. Take a cave tour to get the full experience and explore into the depths more safely than if you were to go it along. The Wanderlust Lava Cave Tour takes visitors underground where they’ll climb boulders to reach the end. In some caves, army crawling may be necessary to get to the furthest reaches, and we should warn that bat sightings are a possibility. While many of the caves are open to the public, meaning you can crawl in without a tour, not all caves are created equal. Some allow for a more leisurely stroll, while others include confined spaces and bigger adventures. Regardless of the season, caving is a popular activity in large part because the underground destinations hover around 45 degrees year round.

Wanderlust Tours offers plenty of other ways to see the best of Bend. We are partial to the Brews & Views Canoe Tour when the weather is right (when the snow is packed in, the waterways

aren’t accessible to the canoes) This experience takes visitors out to the high elevation lakes in the Cascade Mountains, to enjoy the stellar views, but also includes a foray into the local beer scene with tastes available on board. The tour escapes into fingers and coves of the lake only accessible by paddling and will even tour the wetlands created by ancient eruptions and erosion. Perhaps the best part is that the tour is family friendly, and kids will enjoy root beer while adults taste local microbrews. Expert Tip: Bring your swimsuit to jump in for a swim.

Mt. Bachelor, reaching 9,068 feet elevation, is a big part of the natural playground’s draw for locals and visitors. In spring and summer, trails are open to mountain bikers, and disc golf and ziplining offer

both leisure activity and highadrenaline fun. The former has a PDGA-listed course and requires a chairlift to get to the start; the latter reaches elevations of 7,800 feet and drops 1,400 vertical feet along the volcano’s slopes.

In winter, many clamor here for skiing and snowboarding, which routinely lasts long into the spring season. When the snow is deep, the runs provide plenty of adventure opportunities for families and a traditional ski lodge experience. The indoor Cocoas and Clearing Rock Bar in the West Village Lodge have cafeteria-style grub at the former and a raucous après ski experience at the latter, complete with bloody Mary’s and hot toddies. The other big excursion is snowshoeing on the mountain’s marked trails. There are

78 OCTOBER 2023 | SJMAG.COM escape

three main ones to take, distinguished using colored flags so you don’t get lost in the backcountry. We warn, however, those couple of miles quickly feel like ten when trudging in knee-deep snow. This experience isn’t for the faint of heart.

If you’re not afraid to get a little muddy, the Bend Badlands ATV Tour is one more way to see the sights. Driving your own UTV, head up the mountain to take in a view of the surrounding peaks. In winter and spring, you’ll definitely splash in some mud puddles and run into snowpack at the top, while in the summer the roads may be a bit more clear and just as fun to navigate in a follow-the-leader style behind your backroads guide. For two hours, you can play your own jams and rock out while exploring Bend’s more rural trails, with a few stops along the way where you’ll get out and take in the scenery. This tour is booked through Viator. While it isn’t an outdoorsy escape, Bend’s other hidden gem is a nostalgic one. Perhaps you’ve viewed The Last Blockbuster documentary on Netflix. If you remember, the final Blockbuster store is in Bend. The video rental company is down to its final location, and it’s fully operational. Even visitors can rent DVDs to enjoy while they’re on vacation. There is also lots of film memorabilia and souvenirs to shop, including Blockbuster scented candles—you know the smell. For millennials, it’s a must-stop that will bring back those childhood memories of sifting between new releases and bright orange VHS tapes to take home on a Friday night.

DOWNTOWN BEND

Downtown Bend is bigger than expected, somehow expertly combining the charm of a winter ski town with the allure of a big, small city’s urban offerings.

One of the area’s more unique businesses, nestled in between the chic retail stores, cute coffee shops, and many restaurants, is Vector Volcano Classic Arcade

The small storefront is filled with retro arcade games, including pinball, and offers unlimited play by the hour (or an all-day pass). Local beers and other drinks are available at the front counter, so you can enjoy adult beverages while you compete for the top score in Donkey Kong.

Downtown is also home to a handful of restaurants you’ll likely want to visit. Drake’s is heralded for its menu of highend and delicious fare that tastes good enough to be a destination without losing the casual air that permeates most of Bend. While you could dress up to enjoy your Seared Duck or Flat Iron Steak,

you could also show up in a t-shirt and jeans without feeling out of place. While the menu is expansive, we don’t suggest skipping the Buttermilk Fried Chicken, herb-marinated breast and thighs with cucumber-potato salad, dill, spring onion, and arugula. You could also make a meal out of shareables with options such as Prosciutto Melon Salad, Caramelized Carrot Dip, and Miso Cured Cod.

If you are looking for that high-end, white tablecloth experience, Domaine Serene Wine Lounge is a pleasant surprise. In the very walkable downtown district, you can stop in for a glass of delicious wine (or perhaps a flight) or dine in on wine-inspired cuisine.

Also located downtown, the quaint and buzzy Hola! Downtown is a MexicanPeruvian restaurant serving delicious and creative margaritas alongside authentic dishes made with fresh ingredients. The restaurant routinely fills up with

rambunctious customers, but seats at the bar are first come first serve.

You’ll also find the best bed in the city just next door. Or, at least the best pillow. The Oxford Hotel gives off rustic lodge vibes with an opulent edge, and the lobby sometimes plays host to festive receptions. Here, staff caters to an adventurous traveler who likes the finer things in life, especially when their muscles are sore and achy from a day spent outdoors. Slip deep into a soaking tub using your own custom-ordered soaps before sliding into the white, plush bed where you’ve already preselected your pillow for the night (yes, a pillow menu allows guests to choose from a variety of options including Tempurpedic).

Some of the rooms provide full kitchens and living rooms so you’ll feel like you’re on vacation in an immaculate home instead of an impersonal hotel room. Don’t forget to open the windows and peer out onto Downtown.

BEER & LIQUOR

It’s no secret that Oregonians love their beer. But they also love their liquor. There’s too many places to visit in a weekend, but one of the best ways to get a sample of the local offerings is through a tour. And Wanderlust Tours happens to dabble in spirits, too. Appropriately named The Pour Tour, one of the biggest perks of touring the region’s breweries and distilleries this way is the safe ride from place to place. A local guide will pick you up at your hotel before carting you, and other tour goers you’re sure to make friends with, to some of their favorite spots. You may stop at breweries, distilleries, and even a cidery; the locations routinely change. Bevel Craft Brewing offers a tour of their beer-making process and talks heavily about their disc golf influence, all the while sharing sips of their brews. Oregon Spirit Distillers has curated a similar experience, with a complimentary cocktail at the end.

If you’re going it on your own, don’t pass up a chance to visit Deschutes Brewery. Arguably Oregon’s most popular beer, the Bend taproom serves a variety of drinks (including wine) and their famous brews on tap plus a full menu so you can grub while you imbibe.

OLD MILL DISTRICT

Apart from downtown, the Old Mill District is Bend’s other premier destination. In addition to traditional shopping, where you can spend cash at local purveyors such as Vanilla Urban Threads and Kara’s Kitchenware in addition to big names like American Eagle and Anthropologie (don’t forget Oregon is tax free!), there are a host of restaurants and drink spots.

Evoke Winery is particularly fun, offering a rather robust wine tasting experience to guests with creative monikers that sometimes sway a little naughty. Come in for a few glasses before setting out in search of dinner. Lady Bird Cultural Society is swanky and sweet, with windows proffering dynamic dinnertime views. The fine dining restaurant has Chef John Gurnee at the helm, serving up his own spin on farm-to-fork dishes and an overall eclectic menu, all punctuated by a fabulous cocktail program and a plethora of wines.

WHEN THE WEATHER IS WARM

Milder temperatures really bring the party outside in Bend. Many breweries and restaurants open their patios and some even put out lawn games, including cornhole and giant Jenga. From food truck-heavy districts to outdoor swings, it’s nice to sip and savor in the sun.

RESTAURANTS | WINE | DRINKS | SWEETS Wine Dine EATING WELL GRILLED TO Perfection! IT’S ALL IN THE MARINADE FOR THESE FAMILY-MADE KABOBS! 
/ D DAN HOOD
BY SARAH STEFFENS

Arestaurant in San Joaquin County has cracked the code on preparing perfect portions of delicious and healthy meals, and it involves using quality meats and vegetables, a tried-and-true family marinade recipe, a hot grill, and metal skewers.

Yes, we’re talking about kabobs (or, kebabs, depending on who is asking), and more specifically, kabobs from Sugar Mediterranean Bistro, located in the heart of Stockton.

Kabob means “to roast,” and refers to cut up pieces of pan-fried or flamegrilled meat. The dish likely originated in Turkey when soldiers used to grill chunks of freshly roasted meats skewered on swords over open fires. The first kabobs were likely made of lamb, but today you can find them with beef, chicken, pork, seafood, and vegan proteins such as tofu or tempeh. Vegetables often interlace the kabob’s protein, adding an array of vitamins and nutrients. Common veggies skewered onto kabobs include bell pepper, zucchini, mushroom, onion, and tomato.

They’re self-contained sticks of protein, fiber, and healthy fats. Because they use diced, marinated chunks of meats and veggies, they have ample surface area that stands to char over a flame grill, offering a winning flavor and texture combination in every bite. Thread them how you like, in

any which order, and you’ve got yourself a custom meal in no time, making them a great option for every person in your party.

The kitchen at Sugar Mediterranean Bistro has taken the ritual of threading kabobs to a new level, creating impeccable and irresistible combinations. “Our kabobs stand out because of the quality ingredients used and authentic flavors and presentation that are key to a great dish. We put love into everything we do and that's always the first and best ingredient in any recipe created at Sugar Mediterranean Bistro,” says owner Ana Alorizo.

Sugar Mediterranean Bistro offers a wide variety of delicious, melt-in-yourmouth kabobs. Their Chicken Kabobs are marinated and skewered with fresh zucchini. They have combined prawns marinated in oregano, garlic, and lemon with red bell peppers and onions. Their beef kabobs are ultra-tender, threaded with bell peppers and onion, and their fish kabobs feature mahi mahi marinated in oregano and lemon and threaded with bell pepper and onions. All of their kabob plates are served with homemade rice pilaf and seasoned vegetables.

“We have perfected preparing kabobs through years of experience, and practice. Our recipe is based on common marinade

ingredients that are characteristic of Mediterranean cuisine,” says Alorizo. One taste of Sugar Mediterranean Bistro’s tender, juicy, and seasoned kabobs, and you will understand how essential their dedicated practice has been.

Besides serving skewered meals, the restaurant also serves us a wide variety of Mediterranean appetizers, salads, pita wraps, pastas, and mains, with an impressive cocktail and wine list to match. There is something for everyone, and a taste of history and exotic travel in every bite.

Alorizo says she is thankful for her loyal customers who make Sugar Mediterranean Bistro the special place that it is and welcomes all those who have yet to visit come to the restaurant and try their food. “We are a family owned and operated restaurant,” she says. “We are kid-friendly, and our guests are more than welcome to bring their pets to the patio. We enjoy helping out our community and giving back some of what this wonderful city has given us.”

CRAVING CAJUN? Try Captain Crab

DIY MEALTIME ADDS FUN TO FLAVOR

If you are looking to satisfy your crab cravings, look no further than Captain Crab in Stockton. Captain Crab Boiling Seafood is a casual, family-friendly restaurant serving up savory, Louisiana-style Cajun seafood to hungry diners. With an expansive space, full bar, and the friendliest service around, Captain Crab is sure to be a local favorite.

With Cajun dishes like hush puppies and shrimp po’boys, there are many options to choose from. However, one of the restaurant’s most popular dishes is, The Boiling! And this is where the fun begins. You get to pick from a dozen seafood options including blue crab, mussels, manila clams, lobster tails, and Dungeness crab, choosing as much or as little as you like.

Then, pick your seasoning—Cajun, garlic butter, or lemon pepper. Can’t decide? The Captain Special is a combination of all three seasonings resulting in a savory, umami bomb of flavors. The spice level of your boiling pot is also up to diner discretion. From mild,

to extra hot, there is a heat level for every tastebud. Each pot is also loaded with sweet corn on the cob and red potatoes.

The boiling pot arrived in a large plastic bag loaded with seafood, broth, and more. The bag is then placed on a silver platter in the middle of the table. The Cajun spice combined with garlic and lemon was just what I’d hoped for. The broth, both satisfying and concentrated, served as the perfect sauce for the buttery shellfish.

As you cook, aromas of Cajun spices combined with seafood and herbs waft out of the kitchen, which was prepped with a waxed paper covering to prevent messes, a platter of lemon slices, hot sauces, salt, pepper, crab crackers, and a seafood bib.

The boiling bag was delicious. Fresh and flavorful, Captain Crab delivered a truly enjoyable dining experience best enjoyed with a crowd and a few cocktails. Just be sure to bring your appetite, an open mind, and be ready for a fun-filled dinner that requires a little light lifting on your part.

INTENTIONAL Smoothies

Feeling wellrested, strong, and cared for starts with what you put in your body—at least that’s the philosophy at The S.H.A.W. Bar, owned by Lakeisha LittleShaw. Located in the Waterfront Warehouse in Downtown Stockton, the smoothie and more bar offers an extensive and unique selection of specialty smoothies as well as satisfying meals that will fill your body with the vitamins, nutrients, and minerals needed to power you through your day, and soothe you into peaceful sleep at night.

Lakeisha is on a mission to share her healthy mission one delicious meal at a time. “S.H.A.W. stands for Sharing Health and Wellness, and our motto is where there is a healthy mind, and healthy body, there is a happy human! It’s important for me to get the community healthier so our community can be a thriving and happy community,” says Lakeisha.

Smoothies focus on full nutrition. Try the Pineapple Express Greens to add fiber from spinach and chia seeds and flaxseed for proper digestion. The

Gal’s Smoothie, with collagen peptides, iron, zinc, and biotin supports glowing hair, skin, and nails. The King’s Smoothie, blended especially for men with boron, pine bark, and saw palmetto, ensures balanced hormones and high-functioning brain health.

Be sure to try one of many breakfasts, salads, and sandwiches, too. Each dish is created to help you feel energized. In addition to making all of its foods with the highest-sourced ingredients, Lakeisha says the most important ingredient is, and always will be, love.

In addition to offering tasty food and drinks, S.H.A.W. is also launching a fitness and food package this January to offer memberships to the fitness center next door. “We take the mystery and guesswork out of health. Members will discover the best foods and fitness routines for their bodies,” says Lakeisha. Truly, S.H.A.W. is covering every base for people to crush their diet and fitness goals.

You, of course, do not need to be a member to enjoy the benefits.

Savor Seasonal Squash

Squash is a simple vegetable, requiring little fuss and simple, quality ingredients. We often enjoy squash stuffed, roasted, or made into a tasty soup. It’s also an easy substitute for pasta or potatoes. I can’t even begin to decide which squash is my favorite— butternut, acorn, or spaghetti?

Squash is a healthy alternative to starch laden holidays. Packed with potassium and antioxidants and low in calories, it’s also a great source of magnesium and vitamins A and C. In fact, we can’t think of a single reason NOT to jump on the squash bandwagon. Want to make squash part of your fall holidays? Read on for three delicious recipes featuring the colorful veggie.

FRIENDS of Fungi

MUSHROOM HUNTING TIPS FOR BEGINNERS

California is known for its abundant crops, supplying fruits, vegetables, nuts, and livestock to most of the world, and it’s something we’re very proud of, but what do you know about our abundant supply of fungi?

Fungi foraging, rather, mushroom hunting, picking, or simply mushrooming, is the ancient practice of gathering mushrooms in the wild, typically for culinary use, and sometimes for medicinal and psychotropic use. Knowing where and when to forage mushrooms is key to a successful hunt. When beginning, it’s best to learn from mycologists (experts in fungi and yeasts), who can educate newbies about mushroom varieties, best foraging practices, and varieties that are safe for human consumption.

Jim Adams, president of the Sacramento Area Mushroomers Club, says, “We have a wide variety of habitats and several distinct seasons in Northern California that allow for many different types of mushrooms and fungi.”

So, where should you begin? Jim says that national forests are the best places to find mushrooms, specifically lands in the upper foothills and mountains. “Outdoor areas with less human disturbance will have fungi after the fall and winter rains in most of our area, but there are not many places that allow collecting. Many parks have regulations that visitors not take anything home with them, other than photos, such as Oak Grove

Park outside Ripon, and Caswell Memorial State Park. Deer Creek Hills has very limited access and doesn’t allow collecting, but has many good habitats to explore.” Adams has also found mushrooms in the American River Parkway and the Consumnes River Preserve. Foragers can find a variety of fungi this fall. “Early fall mushrooms in our area include Oyster (Pleurotus ostreatus), Lions Mane (Hericium erinaceus), and Chicken of the Woods (Laetiporus sulphureus),” says Adams. He recommends enthusiasts, and those looking to dive deeper into mushroom hunting, join the North American Mycological Association and a local mushroom club. Often, clubs forage together. It’s both bonding and an exciting adventure. Remember, never eat, or let your kids eat, something you cannot identify with absolute certainty, and be sure to leave enough for fungi to reproduce, ensuring their long-term health and sustainability.
