CITY GUIDE

ADVENTURE ON It’s summer in San Joaquin and there isn’t a better time to round up the brood for some adventuring. Our annual City

“We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm and adventure. There is no end to the adventures that we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open.” –Jawaharlal Nehru

Guide is back again and ready to accompany you into the New Year with a concise list of holiday happenings, summer camps, and festivals and fairs. Explore old favorites that have received a facelift, like the beloved Haggin Museum and its massive renovation that encourages interaction through digital integration. Even old staples got in on the action, like Constant Troyon’s Un dernier jour d’ ete, Normandie (A Last Day of Summer, Normandy), that took nearly two years to restore! The redesigned galleries are just asking to be explored! Or, cash in on newcomers like the various Escape Rooms popping up around San Joaquin. It’s fun to see how fast this trending experience made its way into our hometown, and we couldn’t be happier to have puzzles and problem solving social outings at our reach. This year’s guide has really inspired me to take advantage of the Delta. It’s no secret that boat ownership is tons of work, but did you know there’s a business in Stockton that does the work for you? Freedom Boat Club members get access to their fleet and can gas up and go, without the hassle. With boats fit for just cruising along, or hitting it hard with adrenaline-fueled fun like wakeboarding or tubing, there's a vessel for every kind of mood or craving for adventure. And just like that, a new family tradition is born and a hobby is formed. That’s what it’s all about, really—making memories and exploring interests; breaking away from the mundane to learn and play, regardless of your age. That’s the inspiration behind City Guide, really. It’s a public call to action inviting the community to breathe new life into the streets of our cities, to play and explore. We hope our pages inspire you to invest in and enjoy this beautiful, bountiful place we call home.

See you next year, Tony Zoccoli, Publisher/Editor

NEIGHBORING CITIES

STOCKTON Our Port Side City stands strong as an ever-evolving metropolis amid an agricultural wonderland. Bringing in residents both old and new by car, boat, and plane, Stockton offers diverse experiences that honor both its urban and agricultural roots that spread across downtown and throughout the Delta.   Stockton’s historic buildings and city gems are celebrated by passionate and proud residents who work to offer a glimpse into the future of San Joaquin’s central hub—and let us tell you, the future is bright. 14

CITYGUIDE 2018 EDITION

NEIGHBORING CITIES

History:

Gold fever helped to define Stockton’s youthful years, where miners could gather resources before heading for the hills in the late 1940s. After the Rush, Stockton’s many winding river channels and rich soil helped to cultivate an agricultural hub. Stockton became home to the first inland seaport in California in 1933, and continued to industrialize and expand into the metropolis we know today.

CAFFEINE KICK WITH A LOCAL TWIST DOWNTOWN STOCKTON

Our bustling downtown metropolis is ever-increasing its outstanding number of businesses! In recent years, we’ve had the honor of upping our caffeine addiction with trips to Trail Coffee Roasters where their own Nicaraguan extracted blends abound. Empresso opens up the scene on San Joaquin Street, supplying ample sips to those ready to break from the courthouse. Enjoy a little art from the heart at the Mexican Heritage Center, where Terra Coffee boasts subtle layers of flavor that leave a powerful impression. And when you’re done sipping away, we suggest a trip over to the Filipino American National Historical Society, where you can learn a key part of Stockton’s history.

If you have a few hours:

There’s no time like the present to experience all that Stockton has to offer. And what better place to begin, than within a bakery that’s odd in name and outrageous in flavor? Big Worms Bakery & Deli offers incredible donuts of all flavors, prepared hot daily. If waking up early isn’t your thing, drop in for Uso Fries instead, where sublime cuts of meat are piled over our favorite cut of potato. Next stop is Blackwater Delicatessen, where the food is as hip as those taking to the stage on Jazz Night or Open Mic. When you’re ready to wind down? You’re going to Channel Brewing in downtown to enjoy a few pints of craft beer done right.

RIPON

This charming community may be on the smaller side, but what Ripon lacks in size it makes up for in agricultural abundance and classic home-town qualities. Perfect for folks looking for a tightly knit community, its bustling little bundle of boutiques, eateries, and easy access to the freeway means that you’re never far from having a grand ol’ time.

History:

The success of this agricultural community began with its position along the Stanislaus River in the 1840s. Multiple ferry crossings were erected to connect San Joaquin with its neighboring county, but it was John Murphy who petitioned that a road be built toward his crossing in particular, which is now a part of Hwy 99. As families and businesses settled in the region and irrigation was introduced, Ripon’s agricultural industry boomed into the success its known for today.

18

CITYGUIDE 2018 EDITION

If you have a few hours:

After finding yourself along Ripon’s Main Street, you’ve got to take a stop at Burgess Baking Company. A fine selection of cakes and cookies await. Then, mosey on over to the Clarence Smit Museum where you can take a peek into the past of one of San Joaquin’s most agriculturally invested communities. Before calling it a day, drop by the Veteran’s Memorial Museum for another step into history, and take a glance over the Veteran’s Memorial Wall.

the smaller side, those that drop in for a visit know that its festivals are some of the best in San Joaquin. Stop by for the Almond Blossom Festival to experience a vast variety of delectable eats in February alongside blooming almond trees. Soaring Over Ripon gives flight to a parade of Hot Air Balloons that take to the sky over a singular weekend in the summer months.

INSIDER TIPS While Ripon may be on

The “Family City” continues to welcome new residents with open arms— resulting in a constantly expanding base of beautiful homes alongside the agricultural expanses. Families sink their roots into Manteca’s soil as they enjoy easy and direct routes to the Bay Area, the Capital, and Los Angeles, while being only an hour’s drive from the majesty of the mountain ranges to the east.

up and maintained. It all began with cattle, grain, and a station called Cowell, where the Central Pacific Railroad crossed through. Manteca’s name, funny enough, was a spelling error by the railroad. Monteca, the original spelling, simply wasn’t meant to be after the first railroad tickets were developed with the Spanish name for “lard.”

If you have a few hours:

Begin your morning by stopping by Bass Pro Shop to stock up on all your tackle-box needs. Enjoy the live aquarium inside, and then head on out to catch a movie with someone special at AMC Showplace. After, slip into downtown for some good, ol’ fashion cookin’ at Billie Hills’ Hillbillie Barbecue. If the hillbillie décor doesn’t leave you hankerin’ for more, then you just don’t deserve that southern comfort charm.

INSIDER TIPS Put the pedal to the

metal, of your racing bicycle of course! Spreckels Park BMX offers the perfect opportunity to get a little exercise on dirt hills and tight corners. Make sure to bring your helmet— and your A-Game!

TRACY With cute corner stores, ritzy restaurants, and other memorable pieces of history—such as the Tracy Inn—this corner of San Joaquin County continues to bring our roots back to life in all the right ways. Known as the archway to the Central Valley, it’s just a skip away from the Bay Area and home to many new and growing families.

History:

Location has everything to do with Tracy’s founding, which was built by the Central Pacific Railroad as a station that could efficiently connect the Central Valley to the Bay Area in the 1870s. Tracy’s success was the end to Ellis, another nearby station whose population moved its wares and homes to its successor only three miles away. Since its inception, Tracy has continued to work the land and grow in residents.

20

|

CITYGUIDE 2018 EDITION

Every foodie knows that Tracy is the gateway into the Central Valley and the perfect beginning to fine cuisine. Grab a bite at Café Dazzling, where ramen and hot pots go hand in hand with a wide selection of confectionary delights! Next, get your grub on with Papa Urb’s Grill where you’ll find the best Filipino food around. Wrap this all up with a sushi boat like you’ve never seen at Mikasa Sushi, and grab something for your sweet tooth at Pink Turtle Shoppe.

INSIDER TIPS Looking to get the kids out of the house? A taste of the great outdoors is none too far away when you’ve got Eagal Lakes down the road and the plethora of fishing spots, water ski opportunities, trail walks and more. Carnegie SVRA is another excellent spot for those with a motor bike and a sense of adventure.

Lathrop perfectly balances suburban residences, innovative industries, and agriculture. The “young buck” of San Joaquin County is ever-evolving, as its location alongside Highway I-5 and the 120 kindle flames of new business ventures for residents and visitors to enjoy.

After Tracy’s incorporation, the hustle and bustle of the rail line—including its headquarters—was moved to Tracy, but the small city continued on to deal in agriculture and has since become an important crossroad for 99 and I-5.

Then, slip on over to the Ghirardelli Chocolate Outlet for that ice cream sundae you know you’ve been craving.

NEIGHBORING CITIES

LODI

Lodi has created quite a buzz in recent years, as its charming demeanor and award-winning grapes welcome wine experts and enthusiasts from around the globe. For locals, Lodi is where suburbia falls away, where unique boutique shops, tasting rooms, and dining venues reign in its picturesque downtown.

History:

In its late 19th century beginnings, the appellation we know and love was merely a speck, if that, on the map of the Central Valley. Known as Mokelumne, the population grew once the Central Pacific Railroad chose it as a station for its route. From there, Lodi received its name in 1874, and thrived despite a fire that ran rampant through downtown. The rise of our appellation began in the late 1850s, starting with the Tokay varietal, and has blossomed since.

INSIDER TIPS Burn some calories and enjoy your favorite varietal by buying the perfect bike in downtown Lodi and hitting the backroads of San Joaquin. With the Delta breeze at your back, and plenty of sips to enjoy, it’s the perfect way to revel in the Lodi wine region.

If you have a few hours:

Lodi has no shortage of unique boutiques to peruse. Enjoy a leisurely stroll through a few of your favorites after catching a movie at Lodi Stadium 12. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, drop into Porter’s Pub for your hunger-pang fix. Then, unwind while perusing the many tasting rooms along the busy streets. Lodi Vintners sits on the site of the first bonded winery in Lodi that dates back to 1903 under the name Urgon Winey. It was purchased in 1991 by Rippey Family Vineyards, fourth generation Napa natives. We've remodeled our little stone cottage with an elegant rustic design. It's a fun place to mingle with friends and family. Bring a picnic to our shaded picnic grounds, enjoy a game of Bocce Ball or Corn Hole. Enjoy Lodi Old Vine Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Cabernet Sauvigion. We also have a large selection of wines from our vineyard in Napa and Sonoma. Call to book a private tasting for up to 10 in our new Rippey Family Reserve Room. We are open daily from 10:00 - 5:00 and are Kid and Dog friendly!

WINE TASTING

Macchia The name says it all at Macchia, where the moniker itself means “the spot” in Italian. Here, it’s hard to turn down the parade of appropriately named wines, including a “Vivacious” 2012 Nebbiolo—a popular choice of famous Italian variety normally sourced from the Piedmont region, and “Delicious” a 2013 Barbera—a food-friendly wine brought to California by early Italian immigrants. 7099 E. McCay Cellars With their new tasting room in downtown Lodi, McCay Cellars promises sublime sips of Rhone varietals, Rosés, and Zinfandels that truly showcase the appellation. A HISTORY IN THE AGING:

LODI HISTORY

With the perfect Mediterranean climate, Lodi’s wine region has always boasted a natural vintner paradise. In fact, before settlers arrived, the Calaveras River was known as Wine Creek by hunters, all due in part of the bountiful stretches of vines that flourished along its banks.
