Great trip can boost spirits By JENNY RAMOS

San Jacinto Times

Everything starts after midterms, when you leave class with either a good or a bad feeling about what grade you made. However, all those worries can go away for the time being when you have something to distract you that following week. Whether it is flying or on the road, there are several ways to enjoy your self during this week off of class. Spring Break is a week to take advantage of, and there are a couple of places worth your while if you are willing to travel to different states. Depending on what your tastes are, researching a location for spring break is a must. You can have a completely different outlook on a location than what it really is all about. Disney World is a great example on this, and the great stereotype on it being “only for kids” keeps people from traveling and enjoying themselves at the location. The choice of 4 different theme parks and 2 water parks allows travelers to enjoy their stay boredom-free. People who visit Disney World always have something to do, and parks continue to expand rapidly within each passing year. Roughly around 15-17 million people visit the park each year, and that does not only include families and kids. In fact, “the younger your child, the less ground you can expect to cover” states Ellen H. Parlapiano from iVillage. Many young couples can travel more of the park and take advantage of everything there is to see. An endless amount of fireworks, rides, restaurants, shows, and much more are provided at Disney World for people to enjoy. Eight Resorts also can be chosen in the theme park itself, all depending on your travel preferences. SEE SPRING ON PAGE 7

SPRING BREAK ON A BUDGET

Spring Break is a time to be stress-free and relax. Every college student looks forward to leaving the school pressure behind and enjoy a great vacation with friends, but what if this year you can’t afford your dream vacation? Money is tight but that doesn’t mean you have to give up your spring break. Here are some tips to enjoy your Spring Break, even if you’re on a budget: 1) Find an affordable destination. Somewhere you can drive to and not fly. Invite a few friends and ride in the same car as this will allow everyone to split the cost and save money. 2) Don’t stay at a fancy hotel. There’s no need to spend money on overrated hotels since you will probably be out most of the time instead rent a room at an inexpensive hotel/motel. 3) Search for coupons. Take advantage of all the discount deals and websites that can help you save on hotels and attractions. 4) Buy your own food. Everyone knows you’re not going on a spring break vacation to visit restaurants. Go to a local grocery store and get a couple of things you can cook at your hotel this will save you a lot of money. 5) Stay home. If you’re on a budget is for a reason, visit some local attractions, go to the Houston Rodeo or hang out at the beach in Galveston. You can also take this time to work a few extra hours at your job and earn some extra cash for a real vacation since summer is right around the corner. --VANESSA PIÑA

For some, it’s just a break

A lot of San Jacinto College students aren’t privileged with the luxury of having a car. Those are the students who probably ride the bus to school, get rides from parents, or like me, get a ride from their friends every once in a while. This spring break might seem like an eternity to those who are carless. Just sitting around at home might seem like a burden, but there are many things to do for those without cars. The first suggestion is to take a day or two to just relax and catch up on sleep. College students are probably some of the most sleepdeprived folks in the world, so catching up on sleep should be a mustdo on everyone’s Spring Break to-do list. The next thing to do is to get ahead on assignments that are due immediately after Spring Break. Waiting until the day before Spring Break ends to do all of your assignments is a very bad idea. The key to doing this is to do assignments in the middle of the week or right after school is over in order to have more free time during the break. Choosing to procrastinate is never a good idea. Since we’re living in the Digital Age, everything is only a click away. This Spring Break, why not submerge yourself into a good TV show? Websites such as Hulu provide episodes of many good shows such as Parks and Recreation or Modern Family. If you’re a Netflix customer, take time to watch movies or even entire seasons of TV shows. Another way to use technology during Spring Break is to catch up

Brenda Hellyer, Chancellor of SJC, partnered with the Economic Alliance Port Region on Wed., Feb. 22 discussing a number of topics that would both enhance the student experience and help to further benefit Harris County’s economic advantage along the Texas coast. President of the Economic Alliance Chad Burke comments on the Houston Port Region being one of the world’s most influential energy corridors and trade ports: “We’re a booming area economically, with 1400 new jobs brought to [the] area last year alone, we look forward to a busy year following the success of 2011,” commented Burke. “Most Jobs lost in 2009 have been recovered and brought to recovery in 2011 in the greater Houston area, and by the end of 2012 we should be nearly recovered as our region gets to take advantage of some great converging factors.” Talks of plans to incorporate the NASA program were suggested in the meeting, as Hellyer kept in mind her role as Chancellor and Chairman of the Economic alliance. “How can we use the space program and keep that talent and resources available in our area? We need to be aware of all the opportunities we have at our fingertips, we’re able to pull resources from a number or areas.” The San Jac North Campus also became a topic of interest as Hellyer proudly announced the college’s new land purchase to further develop the Marine Time Training program. “The land we closed on last week is right on the water so this is a big deal to us, were taking a regional approach to our economic needs.” SEE HELLYER ON PAGE 7

The crowd cheers and cameras are flashing. The sound of a bouncing basketball down onto the treated hardwood floor rings throughout Madison Square Garden. The squeaks of Nike sneakers pierce the ears of thousands of fans as the game ensues. Just then, as the New York Knicks emerge out onto the court once again, the crowd cheers to see the team’s new shining star: 23 year-old Jeremy Lin. Jeremy Lin was born on August 23, 1988 in Los Angeles, California. His parents, Gei-Ming and Shirley Lin, were Taiwanese immigrants. Lin, along with his two brothers, was taught to play basketball by his father at the YMCA. Lin graduated from Palo Alto High School and wanted to play basketball for one of the Ivy League schools. He finally decided to go with Harvard University, even though they did not offer sports scholarships. He studied economics while he was there, and graduated in 2010 with an impressive 3.1 grade point average. He played basketball while at Harvard, and was the only man in the NCAA Division I to be rated top ten in scoring, rebounds, assists, and steals. Lin, although considered to be a pretty good player, was not drafted by the NBA in 2010. In fact, the last time an Ivy League basketball player was drafted by the NBA was in 1995, which was Jerome Allen. Although he was not drafted, Lin decided to join the Dallas Mavericks during

their mini-camp and the team in the NBA Summer League. After playing in the League, Lin received offers from the Los Angeles Lakers, and a few other teams, one of which was the Golden State Warriors. The Warriors offered Lin a two-year contract for $500,000 with half of that amount guaranteed, which he accepted. At the same time, Nike signed a three-year contract with Lin, and his jersey was on sale before he even played his first game. During the 2011 NBA lockout, Lin received a patellar ligament injury to his left knee. He recovered from it, and in September of 2011, he played for the Chinese Basketball Association for the club Dongguan Leopards, and was looked at also by the Shanghai Sharks (owned by former Rockets player Yao Ming). Then in December, the New York Knicks claimed Jeremy Lin on waivers and he plays guard for them as #17. Jeremy Lin has stated that even though his passion is basketball, his true passion is Jesus Christ. Lin, who was raised as an Evangelical Christian, said that he would not be anything he is today if it were not for Jesus watching over him. When his basketball career is finished, Lin wants to become a preacher, he also wants to work with inner city kids, and kids that have come from broken homes. I had heard Lin’s name several times, both on radio and on the TV, but didn’t really know who he was, where he came from, or what his goals were. I have found out more about Jeremy Lin’s life, and how he got to where he is today, and now I can say that I have diagnosed myself with Linsanity.

Online dating sites yield negative results for many By CATY CHRISTY San Jacinto Times

Sitting on the living room couch around 11p.m., with a bowl of chocolate ice cream and the perfect pajamas, a commercial comes on TV. It’s for an online dating site that promises 100% happy endings. Hopeful, you get up and go to the computer. You think, “Hey, it’s been a while since I had a date, so why not try it?” Wrong. When reading stories about relationships started on eHarmony or Match.com or whichever site you choose, the only stories ever seen are the ones with happy endings. Never do we see anything about those who were rejected. My mother is a very kind, generous, and fun-loving person with a beautiful soul.

Yet, since my father, she remains alone. At work last week, on our way back from lunch, everyone in the car started ganging up on my mom. They were all accusing her of being at fault for not having a date since before I was born. But what those people don’t realize is that my mother has, in fact, been on just about every dating website you could possibly think of. After awhile of rejection it becomes too hard for a person to continue. On her Facebook page my mom posted, “Having been soundly dissed and rejected coldly on each of those sites long ago, I have come to the conclusion that most of the people on those sites are conceited liars, and that I am actually a wonderful, kind, interesting and beautiful person that someone out there is really missing out on!” It is sad that people come to this. There are people in this world who do try very hard to find “the one,” and then there are those lucky people who have love fall into their lap. Very few people realize that life

just isn’t that easy (those are usually the people who are happily married). It is not my mom’s fault because she doesn’t spend every minute of spare time she has trying to find someone. Nor is it anyone else’s out there who is going through a similar situation. There are reasons that factor into it. My mom has a full time job (and works insane overtime just to keep the people she works with happy), she’s spent the last 20 years taking care of my grandmother and me, and she has a dog to take care of, too. She is a Latter Day Saint with a role in the church that requires her to prepare lessons every Sunday and sometimes on weekdays as well. My mother doesn’t have a lot of free time, and what time she does have; she chooses to spend with family, and I don’t blame her. Regardless of whose fault it is there are other problems with online dating as well. In this day and age there are a lot of creeps out there. Many of whom choose the Internet as their means of finding victims. online dating for whatever reason. They could be saving their own life. Another issue is the cost of online dating. Like I said, my mother has been taking care of me for 20 years. That takes a lot of income. She’s a single parent. Lot’s of women are. Not everyone can afford a year’s subscription to a site that may or may not yield positive results. I know these coworkers mean well, but can we not expect more from each other? We can. After her post, many of my mother’s friends, from high school until now, have responded with very inspiring feedback. People obviously know she is a wonderful person and will stand behind her no matter what decisions she makes.

It’s awful what people say sometimes. It can really hurt a person. Who cares if she’s not a picture perfect housewife? My mom always told me, “Remember who you are and act accordingly.” My mom knows who she is, and she likes it that way. A shocking tale of murder By TIFFANY SEXTON San Jacinto Times

Do you remember what it was like to be 15? Not a care in the world, most likely just starting high school and trying to figure out where you belong. Your biggest worry was trying to decide what clothes to wear on your first day of high school, or which boy in your math class liked you. Unfortunately for every teenage girl that is not always the case. Alyssa Bustamante was a 15-year-old girl living in Jefferson City, Missouri. She had been through a lot of struggles in her life mentally and she also had been suffering with severe depression. “During a testimony, Bustamante's grandmother described how the teen had tried to commit suicide on Labor Day 2007 by swallowing a large bottle of Tylenol pills and slicing herself hundreds of times — even carving the words "hate" and "pain" into her arms,” confirmed by the Huffington Post. Alyssa Bustamante was also prescribed the anti depressant Prozac, and while taking this medication her dosage was changed frequently. “Dr. Edwin Johnstone testified that Bustamante received several different dosages of the drug over a two-year period -- including an increase to a higher dosage than ever before, only two weeks before the murder,” stated by CBS News Crimesider Staff. It was no secret to Bustamante’s friends, family, and school that she was suffering from mental distress, but no one thought it would go this far. In October 2009 Alyssa Bustamante committed a murder of a 9-year-old girl. Both lives were forever changed after that day. Elizabeth Olten was the girl that lived next door to the Bustamante family. One day Bustamante convinced her little sister to bring Olten over to play. Little did Bustamante’s sister know, she had other plans for Olten. “In Oct. 2009, then fifteen-year-old Bustamante lured Olten into the woods where she brutally stabbed her to death because she ‘wanted to know what it felt like to kill someone’,” confirmed The Washington Times. Not only did Alyssa Bustamante brutally stab Elizabeth Olten, she also strangled her, and slit her throat. Although that evidence is unsettling enough, there are more chilling details.

There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that this act of violence was premeditated. Two days after the murder and through a chain of events the authorities had a lead in the case and Bustamante confessed to the killing of Olten. When Bustamante led the authorities to Olten’s grave they discovered that she had dug two graves. “When 15-year-old Alyssa Bustamante of Missouri had a Friday off from school, she spent the day digging two holes in the ground to be used as graves. Then she waited,” confirmed by HubPages blogger Antonia Monacelli. Although Bustamante dug two graves we will probably never know what her plans were for the second one. In October of 2009 after Bustamante had lead Olten into the woods and committed her act of violence she came home and wrote in her diary. The authorities were able to get a hold of her journal entry and use it as evidence. 'I just (expletive deleted) killed someone. I strangled them and slit their throat and stabbed them now they're dead. I don't know how to feel atm [at the moment]. It was ahmazing. As soon as you get over the "ohmygawd I can't do this" feeling, it's pretty enjoyable. I'm kinda nervous and shaky though right now. Kay, I gotta go to church now...lol.’ confirmed by a Daily Mail Reporter. Bustamante proved she had no remorse at all for what she had done. Bustamante just took an innocent life and she just walked away from it and went about the rest of her day. Bustamante actually attended a youth dance at her church after she killed Olten. Bustamante was a teenage girl who committed a crime that will change the rest of her life. She was tried as an adult. “Cole County Circuit Judge Pat Joyce then sentenced Bustamante to the maximum possible sentence for second-degree murder — life in prison with the possibility of parole. She ordered the teenager to serve a consecutive 30-year term for armed criminal action, a charge resulting from her use of a knife to slit the throat and stab Elizabeth after she had strangled her into unconsciousness,” confirmed by David A. Lieb. Alyssa Bustamante was sentenced to second degree murder and now that she is eighteen she will not be eligible for parole until she is at least 48 years old.

A special day to share

By LAUREN MOTLEY San Jacinto Times Happy Birthday to me. Birthdays are the one-day to celebrate the person born on that day. Well it isn’t just me we have to celebrate. My younger sister and I have the exact same birthday just five years apart. When I was four years old my parents told me I was going to have another little sister. I was thrilled one more person my other sister and I could play with. I couldn’t wait the nine months seemed to take forever. Finally the day came we went to the hospital at the time my mom was going to have her C- Section. Keep in mind this is March 6, 1995, as they prepped her for surgery the doctor found antibodies in her blood. Because of this the doctor could not preform surgery in the case my mom was to start bleeding they would not be able to give her any blood. It was the beginning of spring break and her doctor looked at her and said “I’m going skiing for five days so your having the baby on the 12th whether you like it or not”. The 12th that was birthday my dad was furious he had said from the beginning that he did not want us born on the same day. At four years old I did not realize that I would be sharing my birthday with her until the day I die,

but I was excited she was going to be my birthday present. On March 12th, 1995 my sister Miranda was born at 10lbs 5oz she was so cute I didn’t want to stop holding her. My friends Lauren Motley/San Jacinto Times from church even brought up cupcakes for me and we had a little birthday party in the lobby. Everything seemed ok until now that we are older. I love my sister but sometimes I wish we had our own days. The hardest thing is we never can decide on where to go out to eat so normally our parents end up picking. This year we are going our separate ways she is going to Galveston for the day with a bunch of friends and I’m still to be determined. As we get older and start our own families at least there will be one day our families can celebrate our birthdays March 12th.

Remembering classics

Creatures still kickin’

Remember the episode of that show when Sideshow Bob rescued Timmy from the well and then went to have a stiff drink at Miss Kitty’s place? Or the time that Lassie got into a gunfight at school and had to write, “I will not shoot bad cowboys” on the blackboard over and over again? What about the time that Matt Dillon got sick of working at the nuclear power plant and ran away from home? Man, that was some good television. Too bad it never happened. Okay, it happened. Just not exactly like that. The shows featuring these characters and plots, Gunsmoke, Lassie, and The Simpsons, are, however, now tied together in a very unique way. As of February 19, 2012, The Simpsons joined Gunsmoke and Lassie on the hallowed list of primetime shows that have run for 500 or more episodes. Though different, they have all possessed a unique quality that kept audiences coming back for more, year after year. The newest member of the 500 club, The Simpsons, has run for 22 years and continues to dish out humor that is sometimes irreverent but always chock full of hilarious pop culture references. The family themselves, while not role models, do not encourage idiotic behavior so much as they brilliantly lampoon the imperfections that already exist among us. The Simpsons is also the kind of show that has kids memorizing lines so they can laugh about them at school the next day. In honor of this feat, here are some especially good Simpsons’ quotes that are great for a laugh among friends:

It is twenty minutes until midnight on a Saturday and outside of the River Oaks Theater stands a line of half naked men, women, transvestites and genetically engineered muscle men. What could possibly bring this wonderfully wretched mix of people here on a monthly basis? A science-fiction double feature, of course, better known as the 1975 cult musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Rocky Horror, as the film is commonly referred to, has been the inspiration behind episodes of Glee, The Venture Brothers, and The Drew Carey Show. Although the film itself has a large following it is not the main attraction on this particular night. Those standing in line have come to watch a select group of individuals leave their inhibitions at the door and perform Rocky Horror live in front of an original print of the film. These are people who sit next to you in class or work in the cubicle across from yours. They have families of their own and by all appearances seem normal. They are The Royal Mystic Order of Chaos and they want to take you on a strange journey.

mands all of the virgins to stand. A virgin is a person who has yet to see Rocky Horror performed live. Contrary to popular belief, the virgins at this cast’s show are not humiliated. They are only instructed to recite an oath and accept the fact that they are disappointments to their parents. This may sound humiliating but it is the least awkward situation they will experience for the next hour and a half. The movie and cast performance begin as the crowd chants, “Start the (expletive) movie!” From here the profanity flies and the sexuality roars like a cyclone through the auditorium until the credits roll. With twenty-five years of Rocky Horror under his belt, Foss, along with the other cast members, sacrifice a great deal of time to produce a show that continually impresses audiences. The cast uses revenue generated from Rocky Bag sells as well as part of the ticket profits to improve production. The most recent improvement is a large flat used for the introduction of the Rocky character. Cast veteran Cody Hoefar was tasked with the building of said flat which he did alone in a garage. This is but one

As the nearly naked masses flood the uniquely beautiful theater the cast dawns their makeup and undress into their costumes. Cast members not performing play the role of crew, which entails handling the spotlight, set pieces and the selling of Rocky bags. These bags contain all of the supplies an audience member needs to participate in the show. Rockabilly fills the auditorium; black and white pictures of Betty Page and Brigitte Bardot grace the screen with the cast’s name scrawled across them. One by one the seats fill while laughter and encouraged profanity flood the grand auditorium. A kilted man treads the carpeted aisle ways with a glass bottle of Coke in his right hand. His left hand proudly gives a one-finger salute to the crowd. He wears a Hawaiian style tiki pattern button down shirt, black motorcycle boots with slicked back hair exposing the fake scar across his forehead. His name is Jeff Foss, the casting director for The Royal Mystic Order of Chaos, and when he starts yelling non-virgins know the show has begun. Foss warms the crowd with vulgarly witty banter while going over the participation rules. Next, Foss com-

example of the contributions made for the betterment of the show. Hoefar is married and has a son; his wife, Whitney, enthusiastically performs along side him. In addition to being a husband and father he is a graduate of San Jacinto College. He has been performing with the cast for 6 years and does not plan on stopping any time soon. Formed in 2005, the cast’s original name was The Beautiful Creatures. Recently the decision was made to change the cast name due to irreconcilable differences between founding members. They have primarily performed at the River Oaks Theater, which is a perfect place for the quirky entourage to hang their undergarments. According to the Landmark River Oaks Theater they have boastfully exhibited independent, foreign, and restored classic films for thirty plus years. They believe hosting these live performances will continue to contribute to the unique entertainment experience the theater proudly provides. If you are easily offended it is probably best that you steer clear of River Oaks every second Saturday of each month. Visit the Royal Mystic Order of Chaos Facebook page for photos and show schedules.

2012 NFL draft wants its quarterback - with change By STUART STOCK San Jacinto Times

With the 2012 NFL combine under the belt, the upcoming draft is the biggest news going on right now in football. Every year there is much hype regarding who will be the best quarterbacks and be the next superstars of the National Football League. Through much analysis and speculation, there are two obvious front-runners that will almost certainly be drafted as the top two quarterbacks in the draft: Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III. These two young men have shown both spectacular athletic ability and leadership, raising them to a level of status far beyond others in this year’s draft class. These two will not be available after the beginning of the first round. When quarterbacks are drafted in such high positions, they are expected to make a significant impact to the team investing in their talent right away. When it comes to safety, these two guys are extremely low risk and will most likely be very successful. What about everybody else? As we have seen in the past, some quarterbacks that were not regarded as the best in their draft class have gone on to be elites in the league. Tom Brady went as low as the sixth round and he is now the best in the business. Somebody unexpected always manages to rise up and surprise people, and somebody always ends up being a bust. Just this past year for example, nine out of 10 experts would have told you that Blaine Gabbert will be the best quarterback chosen in the 2011 draft. Turns out the guys who bet on Cam Newton were right, as he garnered Pro Bowl and Rookie of the Year honors. Perhaps the most overused term we will hear for the next weeks will be “upside. Experts, scouts, coaches and analyst coined this word as being a reasonable way of gauging the potential an athlete has to strive at the next level. Whatever it really means, there is no way to really

tell how a player will pan out. That is why the draft is such a gamble. Besides Luck and Griffin, this year’s draft offers tons of talent at the quarterback position. The next tier of players are ones that will need a developmental stage early before they make an impact, and there is a great deal of risk involved in choosing who will up their game to the next level. Who will be the next guys taken? Here's some worth noting:

Nick Foles, Arizona When you see Nick Foles, the first thing you notice is his size. He stands at 6' 5, and can effortlessly see the field from the pocket. His presence has improved since he became a starter as a sophomore in 2009, and has gained the skill of stepping up in the pocket when necessary to avoid pressure. Not the most athletic player, he has mediocre footwork, as he sometimes tends to “hop around while looking for open receivers. Foles' arm motion might also need some tweaking, as it involves a wind-up motion. He'll need to quicken his release if he wants to survive in the pocket in the NFL. Foles has an outstanding work ethic and watches a lot of film. He is willing to put forth the effort to make himself a better player. He is a tough player mentally and has played his way through injuries as well as having a short memory, easily getting over mistakes. Ryan Tannehill, Texas A&M Ryan Tannehill is an exceptional athlete, who was highly touted out of high school as one of the top duel-threat quarterbacks in the nation. During his freshman and sophomore seasons, he played receiver and led the team in receptions both years. He took over for a struggling Jerrod Johnson his junior year, leading the team to six straight wins and a Cotton Bowl birth.

He has shown to be exceptionally accurate in short range, putting the ball where it needs to be for the receiver to make a play. However, Tannehill must improve his ability to get the ball downfield as he struggled at times this season. His athletic ability allows him to make good throws on the run and off of his back foot when needed. Has big play potential with his feet, but needs to learn to slide as he takes to many hits down field. He has a very inconsistent release, changing the motion of the ball's delivery in different situations. He also has a tendency of feeling pressure too early, and hitting his offensive linemen on throws. Tannehill will also need to improve his coverage recognition if he wants to be successful. It helps that he is very cerebral, earning Academic All Big 12 honors most years. Brandon Weeden, Oklahoma State Brandon Weeden has the ability to hit his receivers in pinpoint locations, and has outstanding arm strength. This isn't much of a surprise since the New York Yankees drafted him as a pitcher. He has shown his ability to be a natural leader as well. What looks good about him is also what scouts are saying could be his biggest hindrance. Weeden is 28 years old. The situation strikes a resemblance to 2001,when the Panthers took a shot on Chris Weinke who was 28 at the time. He went on to have an almost nonexistent stint with Carolina for six years, never seeing the field. Granted players in the NFL can play into their mid-30s, starting your career this old is a risk that not a lot of NFL teams are fond of. However, when he is given a good pocket to work out of, he can put the ball anywhere on the field. He doesn't miss a lot of receivers, and shows a lot of touch on his throws, long or short. He is resilient as he played most of 2010 with a ruptured tendon in his throwing thumb. Weeden is the type of player that can take a hit and pop right back up.

Houston Aeros making difference to those in need By STEVEN TALLAS San Jacinto Times

From hockey games to doggy treats, on Feb 22, three Aeros players, Drew Bagnall, Kris Fredheim, and Jarod Palmer, found themselves fighting to enhance the lives of many seniors across Houston as they visited InterFaith Ministries to help package treats for senior’s "aniMeals." Serving 4,500 seniors a meal every day, while also feeding their pets, InterFaith Ministries provided support to its national movement, Meals for Wheels and aniMeals for Wheels, which sends out more than 7,000 pounds of pet food a month feeding about 1,000 pets every day. As the players filled numerous Zip-lock bags with doggy treats and loaded them into boxes, they made it a goal to get as many ready to be sent out as possible. Player, Kris Fredheim explains, “We really like to get out into the community and help out. We’re pretty fortunate individuals and whenever we can get out and help people who may be in more need it makes us feel like we’re helping the community and hopefully it goes a long way. Because the Aeros don’t have a home game from Feb. 6 to March 10,

The Aeros will manage to do 40 events in 40 days for the “Aeros 40 Events-40 Days; We’re In, Are You?â€? banner. This includes serving dinner at Star of Hope, delivering canned goods at Search Homeless Shelter and supporting the American Cancer Society at Houston Children's Museum. “The purpose of the campaign is to connect directly with our fans and the community as a whole,â€? Aeros President David Burke said. Calder Cup Champions, Aeros, and the largest provider in the Houston area, Interfaith Ministries, led the fifth year of aniMeals on Wheels to a success. However, there is a lot more to accomplish as the vision is to end senior hunger by 2020; all while feeding the biggest companion in a senior’s life — their pet. Communication Manager, Andrea Fineman explains, “A lot of time the seniors live alone and they don’t have any family nearby so the pet is really their only companion‌It really makes a difference for them to have the pet. We want them to be able to keep it.â€? A study sponsored by the Meals on Wheels Association of America reveals that 6 million seniors face the risk of hunger. Today, the Meals on Wheels Association reports, that there are more than 7.5 million seniors in the United States are facing the threat of hunger. A senior citizen in a video recorded by Meals on Wheels explains, “It means a lot to me to be alive and able to live by myself and do for

myself. Feeding more than 5,000 seniors, InterFaith Ministries and Meals on Wheels are asking for volunteers to help. To become eligible to receive meals, fill out an application and have identification that you’re 60 years old or older and spouses of current service recipients. There is no fee for this service. As the Aeros players wiped out the last bit of dog treats from the shelves, Fredheim concludes, “[This] feels great. A lot of the guys on the team have pets of their own and I can’t imagine them not having their food or their treats. It makes us feel great.

Players prepare packages for the upcoming event.

Gay Straight Alliance masquerades for AIDS walk By NICHOLAS PAGE San Jacinto Times

The night is quiet and cold; a gentle wind blows across the courtyard in front of the San Jacinto College Central Student Center. Two women, eager to escape the elements, walk rapidly toward the front steps. Inside, music from the second floor echoes downstairs, past the red and purple tinsel lining the balcony railing. In front of the Student Center Ballroom on the second floor a masked woman in a black dress stands behind a table and greets patrons. Upon the table lie sign-in sheets, donation jars and three medium-sized bowls holding prophylactics. The occasion for such surroundings is the Gay Straight Alliance’s first Masquerade Ball benefit to support the annual Houston AIDS Walk. Through the silver and gold streamers hanging from the ballroom door frame; the masked guests dance in unison. Each circular table is dressed with black, purple and gold tablecloths. Centerpieces explode with color from the innermost point of the table while a variety of beads are scattered about. An impressive buffet of fruit, cheese, wraps and sweets fill the ballroom with a pleasing aroma. Signs promoting the Houston AIDS walk and GSA meeting times are placed at the front of the venue. As the night progresses, the room fills with increasingly impressive costumes and outfits. Faceless strangers acquaint themselves with one another over beverages and food. There is no judgment, hate or intolerance in this room. Happiness, love and understanding grace the smiles of every guest. A young man wearing a red, long sleeved collared shirt and a rainbow pattern sash walks across the balcony and surveys the decorations. His name is Adam Guevara, and he is the President of the San Jacinto College GSA. The GSA was formed at San Jacinto in 2008 under the name Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender & Friends or GLBT & FRIENDS. Guevara changed the name because he claimed GLBT & FRIENDS sounded like a sandwich shop. The GSA is the first club of its kind that Guevara has taken part in. In addition to his position in the GSA, Guevara acts as Vice President of the student government. During his tenure as GSA President, Guevara has been essential to the growth and exposure of the group. A simple act such as replacing a “missing” flyer promoting the GSA with two more flyers exhibits his relentless calm and pride. The support of his family and friends motivate him to keep the GSA strong and active. Although he has two more semesters to attend at San Jacinto, Guevara will step down as GSA President after the Spring 2012 semester. When asked if he felt confident turning over the Presidency to another Guevara replied, “I am happy with the time I have served and I feel it is time for someone new to bring a fresh perspective to the

group. I am comfortable and confident that I have left a good platform for a new president.” Guevara will continue to serve in the San Jacinto Student Government with aspirations to obtain the Presidency.

Inspired by Mardi Gras and a revival show he recently attended, the masquerade ball is a new way for Guevara to show his support for the Houston AIDS Walk. Guevara participates in the walk every year and encourages GSA members as well as non-

Destinations for Spring Break: Student perspective By KARINA ARGUELA San Jacinto Times

“Ahhh Spring break!” says John in relief, “That’s the time when it all goes down! I can’t wait! Spring break needs to hurry up and get here!” A good friend of mine I interviewed this past weekend was excited when I mentioned Spring Break. Not only does this holiday week bring relief and relaxation for students everywhere, it is also a time where partying takes place and vacationing becomes the reason for the season! If you haven’t decided where you will go for the wonderful week, here are some places that you might have interest in going. The first most common place that was mentioned was South Padre Island. For all you party seekers, this is the place to be! When interviewed, 20-year-old Jacob had a pretty interesting thing to say about the famous place.

“South Padre Island is the place where people go to party hard and meet new people. That’s the place where people don’t care where you’re from, what you look like, what you wear! It’s said to be a very fun yet crazy place.” Even though he has never been to the famous South Padre Island, he claims to hear the stories from family and friends about it. I asked him if he recommended this place to be family friendly and he laughed and said, “Yeah it just depends where you go because there is a section for the crazy party people and a section for the family. So if you’re going with family I suggest staying with the family section.” If you are planning to go out of State with your family, Florida was mentioned during my interviews. The reason? Disney World! "Who doesn't want to go to Disney World?" claimed Sarah, "that's the place where dreams come true!" she laughed. Although Disney World is a place of dreams and magical fun, some of you may think that a pricey trip is really what you are not looking

for! No worries. Other places were mentioned. If you do not want to travel so far, here is a place that might seem a little interesting for you! If you like to camp, swim in natural water, enjoy the fresh breeze, then Austin Tx. is the place to go! Austin is known for their famous water parks and natural cold water. Not only that but there is security guards and protection services around the park for a safe family adventure! Another well-known place to go here in Texas is San Antonio. San Antonio is famous for their River walk and it is beautiful! If you have never been there, you are missing out on something beautiful! Filled with night-lights and good restaurants, the River Walk always receives new comers with a warm welcome! Here are a few of the many spring break ideas that may help you decide where to go. May everyone have a good time and a great spring break! Whether you stay home all week or go out and have fun, make sure to enjoy it because it is just one week long!

Las Vegas can be a great spot, even if you are too young to drink or gamble.

Continued from Page 1 Animal lovers are able to reside at the Animal Kingdom Lodge, an “African lodge-style hotel set amidst a 43-acre wildlife preserve, where more than 30 species of exotic animals roam” (Disneyworld.disney.go.com). While others who enjoy the South Pacific environment can enjoy their stay at the Polynesian Resort. All in all, Disney World provides an unforgettable vacation for every one of all ages. Although Disney World covers approximately 30,500 acres, others would prefer to enjoy their stay in a city. Taxis speed back and forth continuously on these streets, no matter what time of day it is. Many areas are open for something to do 24 hours a day. Rides, restaurants, and a variety of places to stay are also provided at this location. Gambling and clubbing are among the most popular attractions, causing people to choose this location over Disney World. Also known as the “city of lights”, Las Vegas, NV excites many; however, this city has a stereotype of its own as well. Many people consider Vegas “only for people who want to gamble and drink the night away” stated Bobbie Culver, a local from Houston, TX who obviously has never traveled to this city. For Spring Break, many people can agree that the city itself does have a lot of places for partying, yet, there is much more to see and do. Options given of driving your dream car at the Exotic Driving Experience on a racetrack, to watching entertaining comedians such as David Spade live onstage. It is recommended to travel to Vegas when you are at least 21; however, an endless amount of entertaining live shows can be watched for people of all ages. Also, the experience of gambling is not such a bad thing as long as the

machine doesn’t eat all of your bank account. Your stay at a Las Vegas hotel is also important, providing travelers a variety of places to choose from. The Bellagio hotel has been rated number 1 according to websites such as Five Star Alliance and Expedia. The older style of the hotel has been the main complaint by customers; however, the classic view of the famous Bellagio fountain is what attracts many to that location. Other hotels such as the Venetian and Caesar’s Palace give an enjoyable stay for travelers as well. All these locations have easy access to fine dining restaurants with mouth-watering meals to splurge on. Astonishing views of the Las Vegas Eiffel tower also awe people every day with the breath taking view of the lit up buildings. If you want an even higher view, the Las Vegas Stratosphere is also a place to travel up to, providing a view of the entire city 1149 feet up. All in all, there is a lot more than just gambling, clubbing and alcohol to Las Vegas, NV. Disney World does provide excellent customer service to their travelers, helping them every step of the way. Las Vegas, NV doesn’t have very much customer service for travelers, so you’re more off on your own when venturing to the city. Also, Disney World allows customers to fix a set price on places to eat and visit with the option of meal plans and tickets to visit the parks. You can to reserve places in Vegas as well; however, the environment is more of a pay-as-you-go location. Disney World is for travelers who enjoy a more safer and secure environment to venture in, while Las Vegas is a more care-free and spontaneous location for vacation. The choice for your Spring Break trip between traveling to Disney World or Las Vegas, NV can be a tough decision. It all truly depends on your taste in traveling. You can even have a free vacation or permanent one if you are granted with good luck at the Vegas casinos. However, this method of payment for the trip is strongly unadvised, and the chance to win is luck most people don’t have.

with friends and family. Since schoolwork keeps students busy all the time we hardly have time to even say hello to people. Websites such as Facebook and Twitter help us reconnect with those who we have lost touch with. Since the invention of YouTube, we’ve been able to enjoy music and learn many things. Some things may be good but a lot of things are bad. YouTube can be used to learn positive things. Whether it is how to do your makeup like a celebrity or how to cook spaghetti, the learning never stops. Parents would really appreciate coming home to a hot dinner their son or daughter just whipped up for them and the experience will be used the rest of your life. Go online shopping. If technology has taught us anything, it is that we can do something that would usually take us a couple of hours, like walking around a mall, in just 10 minutes. Splurge on a new pair of shoes or a new dress. Everybody loves new things. An addition to your wardrobe can be a reward for having worked so hard the first 7 weeks out of the spring semester. Spring Break can also be a time to do spring cleaning. Everyone has junk that they haven’t used in years, so finding that junk can be beneficial in the end. Once you’ve taken out old teddy bears given to you by your ex or the pair of jeans you haven’t been able to fit into for ages, you can donate them or even hold a garage sale on the weekend and make money while you’re on your break. And a little less clutter never hurt anyone. Last but not least, why not plan your summer break so it doesn’t suck as much as your Spring Break did? There are many great destinations near Houston to enjoy. Places such as Huntsville State Park, Schlitterbahn, or the upcoming Pleasure Pier (as mentioned in the San Jacinto Times’ previous issue) are fun destinations just down the road. If going out of the state won’t be so harsh on your wallet, why not plan a road trip for the summer? Alas, there are endless amounts of things to do around the house during Spring Break without having to step out the door. You don’t need a car to have fun or enjoy the break. The point of Spring Break is to take a break. During that break make sure to relax and unwind from the daily routine. Clear your head from the stress and most of all: stay safe in order to enjoy the many more Spring Breaks to come.

Road trips a favorite past time ready to be revisted By EDITH MANZANARES San Jacinto Times

Deciding where to go for vacation during Spring Break is quite the challenge, taking the fact that there are many hot spots in Texas. A college road trip is a rite of passage in the states, everyone is doing it, therefore everyone should go on one even, if there is a tight budget. For some college students, not knowing where they are going makes the road trip interesting. For others, it’s grabbing a map, having an adventurous spirit, and exploring small towns. Road trips in Texas are unique, taking the fact that strange and bizarre characters are encountered. Also, eating in authentic Texas style cantinas, and staying in antique hotels. All the more to take one, wouldn’t you agree? One thing is certain, these road trips won’t be anything like the ones taken with family members, in which the youngest sibling sings, “This is the song that never ends” in a cramped minivan. Each year, college students prepare to experience a whole new road of fun. This list of the top road trips in Texas will help students get started with the planning and so they can be ready to jump into their vehicles when the time comes. 1.) South Padre Island, TX- This is the number one hot spot most college students take during Spring Break. It’s located on the tropical tip of Texas and bordered by the Gulf of Mexico, with beautiful beaches and warm waters. It is no wonder why students choose South Padre. Activities such as fishing, boating, windsurfing, parasailing, jet skiing, and horseback riding on the beach are only a few of the many things to do there. Usually, the weather is excellent this time of year. At night, the party scene is renowned and restaurants become the social scene in which the music comes alive and the dancing goes on all night. 2.) San Marcos, TX- Known as the “City That Charms” and home to Texas State University, is also another popular spring break destination.

Outdoor activities are what draw most students and families to San Marcos. One of the most popular water sports there is tubing the San Marcos River. There are plenty of other water sports as well such as kayaking, canoeing, snorkeling, and swimming in the clear waters of the Guadalupe River. However, although most of the charm there lies in the water, there are also ways to stay dry. Wonder World Park offers caver tours, a wildlife park, train rides and so many other activities. Finding a place in San Marcos has never been a problem, and college students always enjoy their stay there.

Buc-ee’s always a great stop on a road trip. 3.) Canyon Lake, TX- My personal favorite road trip vacation. It is centrally located between Austin and San Antonio and only minutes away from New Braunfels. Canyon Lake has beautiful clear water, camping and day parks, hiking trails, and water activities are abundant. Not to mention, for college students who lean more into the wildlife area, the cedar and oak woods are saturated with wildlife. Dozens of deer have been spotted there and practically describes the area, in which it is calm and natural. The most popular section of the Guadalupe River stretches between Canyon

Lake and New Braunfels, with so many options for lodging.

4.) Uvalde County, TX- Located in the northern part of Uvalde County; Garner State Park is the major attraction of the Texas Hill Country. Hundreds of students have visited this park and enjoyed it. Special attractions in this area include Garner State Park itself, scenic views, hiking fascinating nature trails, camping, swimming, and fishing. Even on warm nights, people meet at the concession building for jukebox dancing every night during the summer season with some good

ol’ country songs. With so many activities at this park, it’s hard to choose where to begin. What sets this park apart from other parks and rivers is the fact that its scenic views and canyons are breath taking. At night, the Big Dipper is seen across the sky and millions of stars are more visible than ever. 5.) Luling, TX- Enough about hiking and parks. If you are just looking to get away and dine at an authentic Texas BBQ joint, Luling is the place to be. People usually agree that the state’s best barbecue comes from Central Texas. This small town,

with two-lane roads cut through rural landscapes. For the most part, it’s mostly historic and appears to be a small, sleepy town. But back to the barbecue, there is a small smokehouse barbecue restaurant named “Joel’s BBQ”. You know that you’ve arrived at Joel’s BBQ when you are able to sniff the air and smell the smoke. Smoke coming from real wood, preferably post oak, to fire the grill. Joel’s BBQ is truly authentic and has won many awards for the best barbecue in Texas. The meat is so moist, fresh, and delicious and has that smoked taste to it, down to the very core. It’s usually served with white bread, pickles, and onion slices. With a huge Texas flag right outside this barbecue joint, it’s hard to miss it. Customers are usually lined up to get a taste of their scrumptious barbecue dishes. This makes a perfect get away spot from the college life for a whole week, and you can enjoy the peacefulness of this small southern town.

Whether college students choose the party scene, or a peaceful trip with nature, the whole idea is to have a great time. Spring semester can sometimes be overwhelming and taking a small vacation during Spring Break definitely helps ease the mind. There is something about Texas that even lures other out of state college students to the Lone Star state. What’s fun about Texas road trips is that they are affordable and there is plenty to see on the road. With a Buc-cee’s store in almost every small town, college students like to take road trips just to visit the store itself and have a taste of their beef jerky or simply buy their shirts with the famous beaver on it. Regardless of the motives for each trip, getting away from the city always helps relieve stress. So, make sure to take plenty of pictures on your spring break vacation, because once you visit one of these locations, you are most likely to go back.

Spring Break Swimsuit Edition: dressing down By ANGELICA RODRIGUEZ San Jacinto times

Finally, the time has come for a great time of the year. Time for a short vacation, getaway or even to just spend time with friends. Maybe fishing, camping, or going to a spring break party. No matter what you do this spring break, you’re almost sure to go out for a swim sometime. Ready or not, bathing suit season has arrived. And finding which ones are in style and work for your body is important. If you’re feeling a little shy, you can’t go wrong with this green swim suit. It’s cute and comfortable and you don’t have to show too much of your body. Animal prints are fun to wear since there are many types of animal prints and of different colors. Like this pink cut out bathing suit? The color not only stands out but so does your body. This bathing suit helps show a little more of your waist to appear more curvy if you has small hips. The takini top is great since you don’t have to completely hide your tummy. Since the top is simply a tank top with bottoms your still sexy, but not uncomfortable. Guy bathing suits are pretty easy to find, all you have to do is pick the color that best fits you. You can’t go wrong with these. Having fun and forgetting about work or home-

work make spring break a great week. But all of these ideas are for you to look great too.

Hey San Jac students! Ever wanted to see your name or picture on the newspaper? Well, now is your chance. Each week we will pick one out of many photos to be on the “San Jacinto Times”. The pictures will be taken of our current students each week who are wearing the latest trends or season styles. We will also describe a little about your outfit and why it was chosen. How to participate you ask? It’s easy, just being yourself, if you stand out you’ll see me and my camera at any San Jac campus looking for you. All you have to do is answer a couple of questions about your apparel so your picture and description can be printed here for the “Pic of the Week”. So San Jac, whether you dress up or dress down, be on the lookout, the next person might be you. Don’t see me around campus and want to participate? Take a picture at any SJC of your seasons’ outfit and send it in to: rodriguez.a2412@student.sanjac.edu only from your San Jac e-mail. Tell me what you consider your style to be and why you chose that outfit. Don’t forget to mention your first and last name, age, hobbies, major, and also include the campus you attend.
