A Face of the Past-Colombia

A generous sample of the historic and culturally revealing photographs from the Archive of Daniel Rodriguez, photographer for the Colombian national daily newspaper " el Espectador". The photographs are in black and white, spanning three decades and many themes. The exhibit is scheduled to open on September 9th at 9:00 AM and will run until October 15, 2013. Two special presentations will be made; the first being on September 24th at 12:00 noon in the UP building "Digitaurium" (Auditorium) at the Seminole Campus. The second presentation will be at the same location on October 2nd at 6:00 PM. All are invited to attend, and there is no entrance fee. Place:

Kick -Off Celebration/Election of Cultural Ambassador.

THHt I hosts the annual Kick-Off Celebration for National Hispanic Heritage Month by partnering with Centro Tampa. This is a free event for the community. THHI orchestrates the Cultural Ambassador Extravaganza, where Hispanic women are given the opportunity to compete by showcasing traditional dances of their native culture. Candidates representing differen countries put together a choreographed dance and compete to become the next "Tampa Hispanic Heritage Inc. Cultural Ambassador". The cheers of attendants from different Hispanic countries, together with the cultural ambassador election and music, guarantee a lively atmosphere at this outdoor event. Also, during the Kick-off Celebration, the official Tampa Hispanic Heritage, Inc. posters are autographed by the winning artist and distributed free to the public. CENTRO Tampa hosts the Festival del Sabor Cook-Off and entertainment. There are food vendors and many free items provided by sponsors as well as children`s activities. It is a family event! Place:

Celebrando Nuestra Independencia y Herencia Cultural.

We will be celebrating our Independence and Heritages from various countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. We showcase folkloric dances, art, and tradional customs from each country. We will also be having an educational panel to disscus DACA (Deffered Action for Childhood Arrival). Place:

September County Hispanic Heritage Celebration.

First of its kind event in Hernando County. Miss Hispanic Queen of Hernando was created to empower latin girls by education, mentorship and cultural values. The pageant will begin at 6:00 and will be followed by a dance party to kick off Hispanic Heritage Month. Proceeds will be for scholarship funds for Latino students residents of Hernando County. Celebration Leadership Class of 2013.

Tampa Hispanic Heritage, Inc. promotes leadership in the community by recognizing Hispanics who excel in their field and service in the Hispanic community, with the exception of the "Orgullo" category where an individual of non-Hispanic descent is recognized for his/her service to the Hispanic community. The community is encouraged to nominate individuals in different fields. During this wonderful reception Tampa Hispanic Heritage, Inc. will recognize the following deserving individuals: Gabriel Cartaya in Arts, Eileen Rodriguez in Business, Luis E. Viera, Esq. in Civic Involvement, Daniel Valdez in Education, Maria Barrios in Media, and Linda Friedman Ramirez in the "Orgullo" categories. Join USF Hispanic Celebration Kickoff Event 2013 this October 2. In a festive environment, USF students, faculty, staff and local members of the community who have contributed to the Latino culture will be recognized. Musical performances from USF students and members of the community will be featured. USF student organizations, USF colleges/departments and local vendors will be showcased during the table exhibit. Parent/teen workshop on keeping teens safe and healthy.

Parents and teens will participate in engaging discussions about health and risky behaviors, through small group settings. Topics will include: dating violence, drugs, alcohol, nutrition, physical activity, sex, etc. The parents’ workshop will be in Spanish and the teens’ workshops will be in English. Teens will be with other Latino teens and parents with other Latino parents, and during the day both groups of parents and teens will join to practice some of the skills that they learned in their individual sessions. Workshops are lead by well trained community facilitators. As part of the project, teens and parents will answer questions in a computer, before and after the workshop, and we will pay them $50 for questionnaire that they complete. MOSI will host Tampa’s first-ever S.T.E.A.M (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) Professional Leadership Forum on Thursday, Oct. 10, at 11:30 a.m. With a prestigious panel including Dr. Raul Cuero, an inventor and microbiologist who was recently named MOSI’s National Hispanic Scientist of the Year, the forum will address the challenges and opportunities that Tampa faces in regard to becoming a leader in S.T.E.A.M. education. Our 5th Annual Town n Country Parranda or “Block Party” celebrates Latino cultures, music, food, and art. We will be having ethnic foods by parents from our free after school program, and performances from various cultural dance groups. We are also going to be offering free HIV testing to celebrate Latino HIV/AIDS Awareness day. We will have bounce house, games, etc. vendors and sponsors are welcomed. Forum "María Zambrano: between the Mediterranean and the Caribbean"

This type of academic meeting is designed to highlight key moments in the life and thought of the Spanish intellectual María Zambrano (Velez Málaga 1904- Madrid 1991), who inherited from and contributed to, the European classical tradition and Latin American utopias. Instituted by the Fundación María Zambrano in the summer of 2011-which hosted the first two events the initiative is now revisited in United States. The University of the South Florida, will hold the III Forum on 14, 15 and 16 October, 2013. The event will take place in the Grace Allen Room, in the Main Library in Tampa Campus. The conference counts with the support of the Fundación María Zambrano and the University of Malaga. Our purpose is to continue generating spaces for dialogue among scholars of the Atlantic’s banks that Zambrano was able to reunite in her life experience and her philosophical practice. Participants are “zambranistas” Spain, Cuba, Canada, Puerto Rico and United States. The sessions will be open to students and teachers as well as members of the community. Conga Caliente.

Conga Caliente is a family festival which is focused on Arts and Culture. The festival includes an Arts Festival with many local Hispanic artists exhibiting their works. It is also about education. There is a Health fair developed to educate the festival goers about health issues. Keeping tradition, there is a domino tournament, cigar rolling demonstrations and a plethora of ethnic food vendors in the food village. Many exhibits! There is a professional sound stage for youth entertainment and a main stage with artist mostly nationally and many internationally recognized yet there is no fee. Place:

El Mundo de Achu by Feathered Serpent Gallery.

Artist Reception and Exhibition Opening, November 9, 2013 5:30-8:30 p.m. Visiting Panamian artist Oswaldo DeLeĂłn Kantule ("Achu"). Oswaldo was born in Ustupu, Kuna Yala, Panama, in 1964. He began painting (self-taught) in the 1980`s and graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Panama. He has exhibited his work in several countries including Panama, Cuba, Canada, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico and the USA. In 1996 Oswaldo won First Prize in the National INAC Painting Competition (Panamanian National Institute of Culture), and was invited to participate in the Sixth Biennial Art Competition of Panama in June, 2002. In 2004 he received a research grant for visiting artists at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C. and in 2010 he was recipient of a prize at the II Bienal of Indigenous Art in Quito, Ecuador. He was also a finalist in the first Bienal of Contemporary Indigenous Art in Mexico in 2012. Besides dedicating himself to painting, Oswaldo has curated various expositions and has illustrated many publications. He currently resides in London, Ontario. Place:

Un rostro al pasado de Colombia

Una amplia presentación de las reveladoras fotografías históricas y culturales de los archivos de Daniel Rodríguez, fotógrafo del diario colombiano "El Espectador." Las fotografías son en blanco y negro y cubren un periódo de tres décadas y muchos temas. La exhibición será del 9 de septiembre a las 9:00 AM al 15 de octubre del 2013. Habrá dos presentaciones especiales. La primera será el 24 de Septiembre al mediodía en el auditorio del edificio "Digitaurium" en el Campo de Seminole, St. Petersburg College. Kick -Off Celebration/Election of Cultural Ambassador.

THHI celebra anualmente la apertura del mes de la Herencia Hispana con Centro Tampa. Este es un evento gratuito para la comunidad. THHI organiza el concurso de la Embajadora Cultural, donde las mujeres hispanas tienen la oportunidad de competir y de exhibir las danzas tradicionales de su cultura nativa. Las candidatas que representan a diferentes países crean juntas una coreografía de baile y compiten para convertirse en la próxima "Tampa Hispanic Heritage Inc. Cultural Ambassador". Los aplausos de los asistentes de diferentes países de habla hispana, junto con la elección de la embajadora cultural y la música, garantizan un ambiente animado en este evento al aire libre. También durante esta celebración, los directores de la Herencia Hispana de Tampa, Inc. distribuyen los afiches ganadores al público. El artista ganador estará presente autografiando los afiches que serán distribuidos gratuitamente al público. Centro Tampa acoge el Festival del Sabor y el entretenimiento. Forum “María Zambrano: entre el Mediterráneo y el Caribe” Este tipo de encuentro académico se ha creado para destacar momentos claves en la vida y el pensamiento de la intelectual española donde se cruzan la tradición clásica europea y las utopías latinoamericanas. Instituido por la Fundación María Zambrano en el verano del 2011que acogió los dos primeros eventos- la iniciativa es retomada ahora en Estados Unidos. La Universidad del Sur de la Florida, celebrará los días 14, 15 y 16 de octubre, en su recinto de Tampa, el III Forum con el apoyo de la Fundación María Zambrano y la Universidad de Málaga . NOVIEMBRE 2013 02 Hablando con su adolescente sobre sexo, droga, salud, riesgos, etc. by USFProject Latino STYLE Parents and teens will participate in engaging discussions about health and risky behaviors, through small group settings. Topics will include: dating violence, drugs, alcohol, nutrition, physical activity, sex, etc. The parents’ workshop will be in Spanish and the teens’ workshops will be in English. Teens will be with other Latino teens and parents with other Latino parents, and during the day both groups of parents and teens will join to practice some of the skills that they learned in their individual sessions. Workshops are lead by well trained community facilitators. As part of the project, teens and parents will answer questions in a computer, before and after the workshop, and we will pay them $50 for questionnaire that they complete. El Mundo de Achu by Feathered Serpent Gallery.

Recepcion por Artista y Exposicion de Arte. Oswaldo De León Kantule (conocido también como "Achu") nació en Ustupu, Guna Yala, Panamá, en 1964. Comenzó a pintar de manera autodidacta en los años 80. Luego de estar pintando por varios años, decidió estudiar formalmente, obteniendo su licenciatura en Artes Plásticas y Visuales de la Universidad de Panamá. Ha tenido más de 18 exposiciones individuales y ha participado en varias exposiciones colectivas en Cuba, Canadá, Portugal, Italia, México, Francia, Estados Unidos y otros. En 1996 Oswaldo obtuvo el Primer Premio del Concurso Nacional de Pintura del Instituto Nacional de Cultura de Panamá y fue seleccionado para participar en la Sexta Bienal de Panamá en junio de 2002. En 2004 recibió una beca de investigación para artistas visitantes del Instituto Smithsonian, en Washington D.C. y en 2010 fue merecedor del premio único de la II Bienal de Artes Indígenas y Milenarias de Quito, Ecuador. También fue finalista en la primera Bienal de Artes Indígenas Contempor?áneos de México en 2012. Además de dedicar su tiempo a pintar Oswaldo ha curado varias exposiciones y ha ilustrado un sin número de publicaciones. Actualmente vive y trabaja entre Canadá y Panamá. Lugar:
