Wrenchmonkees THE RIGHT OF REFUSAL

In a red brick building on the outskirts of Copenhagen, Nicholas Bech and Per Nielsen build motorcycles under the name Wrenchmonkees. The waiting list to discuss a project with them is at least six months. When it’s your turn, there’s still a good chance the answer will be no.

which was once home to a Jaguar factory, is muted and black. There is a noticeable absence of chrome. Instead, the motorcycles are dominated by shades of grey and monochrome. “Chrome rusts and doesn’t have a nice patina. I see our motorcycles as an extension of classic Scandinavian design where the colors are removed to instead highlight the function,” Bech says. This attitude, removing something instead of adding it, has made Wrenchmonkees one of the world’s most celebrated and renowned custom garages. Their breakthrough was in 2009 when they rebuilt a 1976 Honda CB 750 for an exhibition on the history of motorcycles in Copenhagen. The result, a brutal but pared down café racer named Gorilla Punch, went viral online and was also featured in various motorcycle magazines around the world. Nicholas and the other half of Wrenchmonkees, Per Nielsen, met in 1998 when they rented a small garage to work on their own motorcycles. They quickly began to work together, and in 2007, they launched their own company. Thus far, they have created around 60 motorcycles under their joint venture, but the goal is to be able to charge enough that they only have to build four or five bikes a year. Per has a background as a mechanic and has previously worked in a motorcycle shop. Nicholas started out as a photographer.

T

he Kawasaki KLR 600 '84 might not be the world’s sleekest motorcycle. It actually looks more like a disproportional lump of plastic. But a broken-down example of the Japanese bike was the only thing Nicholas Bech could afford when he got his motorcycle license. Nicholas didn’t really like how it looked – or how it ran, so he took it apart, fixed it up, and put it back together. When he was done, he wanted to do it again. This was the start of what would become Wrenchmonkees, one of the world’s most reputable custom garages. The neighbors on Uplandsgade in Copenhagen are used to the sound of revving motorcycles out in the street. That’s where Wrenchmonkees test drive their creations. The noise doesn’t cause too much disruption though as this part of town is primarily industrial. The interior of the red brick building,

“I definitely draw on my background. I have a good eye for images. I can look at a bike from a distance and see if all of the lines come together. I can see immediately if something is off. That’s partly why our bikes are so edited down.” When Per and Nicholas started out together, they couldn’t afford to buy the classic Italian, British, or American bikes. Instead, they ended up with small, forgotten Japanese bikes from the 80s that no one else wanted. “We took ugly bikes and made them beautiful. After a while, we began to see the beauty even within those ugly bikes. We will accept these unwanted bikes.” Wrenchmonkees’ clients can either donate a motorcycle they want to start from, or they ask the shop to find them one – most of them can be improved upon. “The Suzuki GSX-R750 and Kawasaki Z1000 from the mid-1980s are already so complete both ascetically and functionally, but they are almost the only ones that are,” Nicholas says. Wrenchmonkees has clients from all over the world. When Sandqvist Journal pays the workshop a visit, Per and Nicholas are building a bike for a client in Corsica. There is no upward limit to what a custom build might cost, but often the final price is € 20,000–30,000. Those who turn to Wrenchmonkees do it because they like their particular style. “Sometimes people have seen the TV series American Chopper and get in touch with us. But our style is not the same as Orange County Chopper. We’ve reached a level where we can say no if it’s something we don’t like. We have our brand to think about – there has to be an aesthetic cohesion. Our waiting list at the moment is six months, so we turn down a lot of projects.” When asked if they work with sketches or blueprints, Per and Nicholas say no. “Then you know how it’s going to end up. That’s no fun. It’s more fun to allow yourself to be surprised while you’re working. We know when a bike is done. We are restless and always want to move on, so there’s no risk that a bike will be overworked.” For the untrained eye, it’s not always easy to recognize a Wrenchmonkees’ bike since the Danes’ logo is small, hidden, or sometimes missing altogether. “It’s the client’s bike, not ours, so the bike itself becomes our signature instead of some kind of giant logo,” Per says. I ask if there is a risk in using so much matte black. There's

“WE TOOK UGLY BIKES AND MADE THEM BEAUTIFUL. AFTER A WHILE, WE BEGAN TO SEE THE BEAUTY EVEN WITHIN THOSE UGLY BIKES”

a fine line, after all, where the bikes might become some sort of Mad Max monster. “The whole Mad Max concept is wrong. In the first movie, they just drive the regular Kawazaki Z1000. It’s not until Mad Max: Beyond the Thunderdome where you see this whole stealth meets post-apocalyptic thing. It’s historical revisionism to compare our bikes to Mad Max,” Nicholas says. I don’t have anything to say. These guys know what they are talking about. That’s why they can charge € 30,000 for a bike, have a six-month waiting list, and have the right to refuse bad taste and stupid questions.

17

SANDQVIST × WRENCHMONKEES Wrenchmonkees and Sandqvist work in the same handcraft and no nonsense tradition. A collaboration was inevitable. The result is a classic tool roll, a small tool bag, and a roll top bag, a saddlebag based on Sandqvist’s backpacks. Both bags are made of black, thick canvas with leather detailing. The backpack holds a 15" computer and has a built-in aluminum frame that can attach to a

motorcycle. It works just as well on your back, like a backpack. “The new modern motorcycle bags are generally kind of ugly and don’t fit our vision. Together, we’ve created a classic, beautiful bag that is still discreet. The function also follows the aesthetic”, says Nicholas Bech of Wrenchmonkees. The design collaboration will be launched in January 2014. 18

SANDQVIST + GRANDPA

It has been exactly ten years since a nervous Anton Sandqvist stood and gathered his courage outside of the newly opened fashion boutique Grandpa in the Stockholm neighborhood of Södermalm. He had a bag that he had made himself, and he wanted to see if Grandpa might be interested in selling it. They were, and it was the beginning of a long and fruitful collaboration between the two Södermalm-based companies. To celebrate, they have developed the Sandqvist + Grandpa Leather Care Kit. The kit comes in a durable canvas case with leather detailing. It contains leather conditioner, a horsehair brush, and a polishing cloth. All of the leather care products are made by French shoe care company Saphir. “It’s about time we had a collaboration between Sandqvist and Grandpa,” says Jonas Pelz, one of the founders of the fashion retailer. 19

TIKI PETE

Tattoo artist Peter Johnsson, better known as Tiki Pete, is a conspicuous figure on the streets surrounding Malmö’s Möllevångstorget square in southern Sweden. He’s recognizable because he towers at 1.97 meters, a head above everyone else, but he’s best known for his art, his tattoo studio, and his huge collection of 78 RPM records.

on both butt cheeks and spelling ‘MOM’ with your asshole. Another classic example is a lawn mower cutting a swath from a patch of pubic hair. I’ve done a variant of that with a skeleton driving a large riding mower on a really hairy guy.” You collect 78 RPM records. It’s 2014. Why?

“Strangely enough, I only have two. I usually say that I don’t think tattoos are all that attractive, but it’s mainly the fact that I don’t feel a need to get anymore. But it might also have something do to with age…”

“I prefer old music, and I have an urge to collect things. It’s a compulsion I need to control, so 78s work well: it’s good to collect something in limited supply. It’s getting harder to find good records here in Sweden, so the collecting has died down a little. That also means I find the time to listen to the records I already have.”

Describe your tattoo style.

Where does the name Tiki Pete come from?

“I’m inspired by woodblock printing and copper etching scratch art. When I studied cartooning, I learned to draw with a fountain pen. I have worked a bit with illustrating fanzines that are still attractive when photocopied, and screen printed for posters and t-shirts – a combination of wood blocks and cartoon aesthetics.”

“It started as a joke during a European tour with the band SUMA, when I made a guest appearance playing the saw. I said something about tiki culture, and suddenly everything was about tikis. ‘Is this tiki? What about that?’ It was a funny situation and the name stuck.”

So…how many tattoos do you have?

But is there room for humor in the tattoo world? “Of course, there’s definitely humor. There are a lot of crazy motives that might seen cool in the moment, but it’s seldom inspiring artistically, like tattooing an ‘M’ 20

FRIDA EK

When American artist Erik Foss exhibited at a gallery in Stockholm, he chose to take the picture framer, rather than the curator, out to dinner because he was so impressed by her work. Her name is Frida Ek and she has quickly become a darling of the contemporary art world. Why frames? “I did a lot of photography several years ago and wanted to frame my pictures. I thought all of the pre-made frames were crap, so I found a Danish mitre guillotine from the 1960s online. I bought it to learn how to do it myself. I held a mini art exhibition here in Norrköping, and that’s where it all started. Now I’ve stopped photographing almost altogether and just work on others’ pieces.” How does a frame affect a picture? “To begin with, the picture will last much longer. It’s cool to know that you can extend a piece’s physical lifetime. Secondly, a picture changes when you put it in a frame. It becomes so much more than just an image.” How do you choose a frame for a piece? “You might pick out a color in the piece. In the beginning, I made very simple, discreet frames since I didn’t want to distract attention from the piece. But now I can bring in more, and allow the frame and the picture to interact.” What is your favorite material? “Maple is nice. It grows slowly and is dense. I also use a bit of pine and oak as well. The most important thing is that it’s real wood, not aluminium or plastic. Wood is a very vivid material to work with, and I buy strips by the meter from a little place in Hälsingland, in central Sweden. But I don’t want to tell you where, it’s my little secret.” How many framed pictures do you have on your walls at home?

Name: Frida Ek Age: 26 Lives: Norrköping Occupation: Runs her own framing studio. Her main clients are galleries and artists.

“None at all. I get enough pictures and frames while I’m working at my studio.” 23

BON COIN

Camille Picot and Cecile Lacan, both from Bordeaux, are trying to export a little southwestern French food culture when they drive around the streets of Stockholm in their food truck, known as Bon Coin. They serve crêpes and galettes from the old Citroën.

it has looked exactly the same since 1947. It is true French nostalgia. It appears in a cartoon album from Spirou. My grandmother also had a van like this,” Cecile says. What do you miss most from Bordeaux?

How did you end up here? “When I was a student, I did my internship at Swedish company and I ended up staying afterwards,” Cecile said. “I was also studying design. I have always liked Swedish design, so I came here on a little bit of a whim,” Camille added. Do Swedes understand French food? “Not really. Crêpes are fine because they are sort of like pancakes. Galettes are a little more challenging, so we try to adapt them to Swedish tastes, for instance cloudberries. We are a fairly exotic addition to Swedish street food.” So what do you think about Swedish food? “Better than expected. There is really good salmon and fantastic pickled herring. And meatball of course. And moose!” Tell us about the truck. “It’s a Citroën H Van. It’s from 1978, but 25

“The wine, of course. And the cheese. But we have friends who send us boxes of cheese.” Now we need insider tips. What Bordeaux wines should we buy? “Chateau Petrus is unbeatable, but it’s insanely expensive. We would lean towards the Rhône area instead. Why not Châteauneuf-du-Pape?

Tyresta National Park THE DEAD FOREST LIVES AGAIN

Just fifteen minutes from Stockholm is Tyresta National Park, an untouched wilderness of deep virgin forest, an archipelago, and extensive rocky terrain.

WORDS BY OSKAR HAMMARKRANTZ & PHOTOGRAPHS BY KNOTAN

35

T

hree hungry Russian diplomats, a package of spicy sausage, persistent summer drought, and a few stray flames: was that all it took to start one of Scandinavia’s most devastating forest fires of all time? Maybe it was, at least according to the police investigation. But since the men had diplomatic immunity and couldn’t even be interrogated, we’ll never know for sure. The call was received at the command center at 10:58 a.m. on 1 August 1999. Seventeen minutes later the first rescue personnel, six firemen in two fire trucks, arrived on the forest’s edge. The summer had been extremely warm and dry, so the firemen had already responded to hundreds of fire alarms in June and July. But this time was different. The smoke could be seen and felt in central Stockholm. Emergency calls were received in Åland, an island 140 km northeast of the Swedish capital, because of the smell of smoke, as the sky over Stockholm

was shrouded in black. Sixty people from the fire department, the Swedish National Home Guard, and the military worked around the clock to fight the flames. Helicopters from Muskö and Visby water bombed the fire and an 180 km hose pumped in water from the Baltic Sea. It took a week before the firemen declared the fire extinguished. The burned out 4 hectare plot was a sparse and charred landscape. It wasn’t a regular forest with a few spruce and pines that burned, it was a unique virgin forest that had remained untouched since the beginning of time – woods that had never been exploited by human agriculture or forestry. In Sweden, less than 0.5 percent of all forests are virgin. The Tyresta forest, just fifteen minutes from Stockholm, is also unique as a national park. The 1,970 hectare area is home to a number of lakes and ponds, dense virgin forests, plateaus, and

37

meadows. The easternmost part of the park an archipelago. It is the perfect place for Stockholmers who wanted to experience a mini adventure – to get away from the sidewalks and cafes for several hours or days into a miniature wilderness. So, several of us from the Sandqvist Journal and company started to feel restless. We needed to get away from our desks for awhile. We decided to take a trip out to try out some of the recent improvements on some of our new backpack models. Tyresta was the perfect destination since we could experience dramatic nature and wilderness and still be back at work the next afternoon. The first stretch into the forest from the parking lot wasn’t especially exciting. It was the same lackluster, green coniferous forest we trudged through during elementary school field trips. Our delegation, who were properly weighted down with backpacks, sleeping pads and bags,

38

and hiking boots, passed people chatting on their mobile phones while pushing strollers on the broad, even and well-groomed trail. Not quite the excursion we had had in mind. On a small wooden bridge over a little marsh, we come across a discarded and forgotten latte cup. As we left the stroller brigade behind, it was time for the real adventure to begin. As we pushed farther in, the forest became denser and the rays of sunshine no longer warmed the ground. On one side there was only the dark green colors of the forest, but soon a black woodland lake opened up on the other side. The frenetic tapping of a woodpecker broke the lake’s silence. White, dead trees were partially submerged in the dark water. Many of the trees that weren’t destroyed in the fire fell afterward anyway because their root systems were damaged by the dry earth.

In the rocky areas, the ground was almost entirely covered by a large, continuous blanket of lichen and moss. It had dried out during the rainless summer and provided the fuel for the fire. We fought our way up from the marsh area to rockier terrain and through the woods. A few handfuls of bright yellow chanterelles we found just off the path provided the perfect spice for our lunch of pasta. Tyresta National Park is as difficult or easy as you want to make it. It has many well-trodden paths, great for short day trips, and manicured campfire sites with windbreaks. Alternatively, you can crash into the dense forest and fend for yourself. But even if you choose the well-marked paths, there are still obstacles. Here, the wilderness has been left to live a life of its own. If a tree falls, it stays where it lands, which can mean a lot of climbing over trunks and upturned roots.

“WE COULD EXPERIENCE DRAMATIC NATURE AND WILDERNESS AND STILL BE BACK AT WORK THE NEXT AFTERNOON”

Despite its relative smallness, the Tyresta forest is never monotonous. The landscape is different around every bend. You wander through deep virgin, mixed, coniferous, and hardwood forests, and even over rocky ground and marshlands. The walk along Bylsjön and Årsjön lakes and into the barren burn area down to Stensjön and Lanan lakes began to take its toll. Even if we

39

were physically capable of going further, it was quickly becoming dark. Not even our head lamps were sufficient as the impermeable darkness fell. It would be too dangerous to walk any further. A small slip on a slippery tree trunk would end with a 20-foot fall straight down into a pitch-black pond.

“THE TINY PAW PRINTS OF A FOX ARE DISCERNABLE. MAYBE WE WERE NOT AS ALONE AS WE THOUGHT.”

TYRESTA NATIONAL PARK 59° 11.227', 18° 16.013'

We camped at a shelter along the lakeshore, and with our head lamps turned on, we got to work. Cooking a junipersmoked goulash from scratch was the perfect remedy to keep the cold and boredom at bay in the thick darkness. Night comes early in the forest. Since we left the stroller brigade in the morning, we did not see a single other person. Besides an eagle majestically gliding over the lake at dusk, the animals were mostly heard and not seen. The feeling was a bit surreal given that Stockholm is only fifteen minutes away by car. We sat around the fire for an hour or two after we finished eating. We passed a flask of whiskey around the circle. Anton Sandqvist read aloud from Swedish author Hans Lidman’s book of tales about eccentrics living in the forests of Hälsingland. This is a tradition he picked up from Sandqvist brothers’ cottage in Härjedalen, where large parts of the library are made up of Lidman’s books. Even though temperatures crept down towards zero, we slept well in our sleeping bags, with Lidman’s description of the reclusive Finn Hindrik and his huge fist and humpback in our heads. When the sun rose over the lake again, I went for a stroll behind the shelter. The grass tussocks where we poured out the remains of the goulash is green and clean. No trace of the food is in sight. But small tracks, the tiny paw prints of a fox, are discernable. Maybe we were not as alone as we thought.

The Sandqvist house in Glanshammar village 1981.

The story of Sandqvist Ten years ago Anton Sandqvist sat by himself in a basement, experimenting on a laptop bag. Now the company sells bags and accessories in 350 stores in 30 countries around the world. Here the founder tells the tale of Sandqvist Bags & Items.

52

“THEY SHOULD BE DURABLE AND RELIABLE WITH A FOCUS ON FUNCTIONALITY.” How did you get started? “In 2004, I was working as a civil engineer at a multinational tech company. I made a good living, got to travel a lot and generally enjoyed what I was doing. But there was nowhere for me to go in the company and I didn’t have any control over my situation. I wanted to start something of my own.”

How did you get into bags, of all things? “I always carry my laptop with me, but I never found a computer bag that I liked. I was already a bit vain, so I wanted something that would be attractive and durable but still reasonably priced. I decided to make a bag myself. The first version was in gray tarpaulin and the handle was made from a seat belt. The inside was lined with awning fabric. People seemed to like it. At work and when I was walking down the street, people would come up to me and ask me where I got it.”

So you just started sewing and made a bag? Did you know how? “I found an industrial sewing machine online and bought it mainly just for fun. I’ve always been handy and took sewing lessons at school. When I was a teenager in Glanshammar in the 1980s, there were a lot of patchwork jeans to be had. I tried my hand at piecing together my own clothes. It took me 30 hours to piece together the first pair.

How did you get out of the basement and into a successful company? “In 2006, I decided this needed to be more than just a hobby. My brother Daniel Sandqvist and our mutual childhood friend Sebastian Westin joined the company. They had published a lifestyle magazine and had the experience and

contacts in the fashion world than I lacked completely. We wanted to do fashion, but our backgrounds were in nature, in the Swedish craft tradition and outdoors.”

Where do you get your inspiration? “We are all outdoor enthusiasts that are happiest when out in the wild. We have done a lot of skiing, climbing and camping. Daniel has been fishing a lot and has taken up fly fishing. So we bought a cabin in northern Sweden to be able to get out more often. Our trusty photographer Knotan also enjoys the open air. We wanted to make everyday products inspired by nature that work just as well in the city as they do in the mountains or by the stream. They should be durable and reliable with a focus on functionality. At the same time, we don’t want to drown in technical features. Our Swedish heritage, quite simply.”

Where do things stand now? “Now we have around 200 different products, 11 employees, two of our own stores, and 350 retailers in 30 countries around the world. We plan to continue in the same direction. We want to be the top choice and the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a quality bag with feeling and attitude. We’re not quite there yet, but we’re on our way.”
