Paphiopedilum Vanda M. Pearman (bellatulum x delenatii) Paphiopedilum Vanda M. Pearman is a hybrid made between Paph. delenatii from Vietnam and Paph. bellatulum from Thailand. This is a delightful plant with large flowers up to 4" across in colors of light pink finely spotted in dark purple and are very often 2 flowered. They have beautiful foliage in colors of dark green, blue green, silver, and burgundy and are stunning plants even when not in flower.

David’s Monthly Orchid Tips

will tolerate water with more minerals such as calcium and magnesium and iron.

David Off is a 3rd generation member of the highly respected WALDOR ORCHIDS family.

Fertilizer For best results, use GrowMore Urea-Free 20-10-20 if you use municipal water, which has limestone added, or Cal-Mag. 15-5-15 if using rain, distilled, or reverse osmosis water.

The Tough Bloomers We all have those few plants in our collections that we just love to see the flowers, but for one reason or another we simply cannot bloom them. We have had several cases of this even at the shop. One of these is L. lobata ‘Estrella’. We bought the plant from H&R and even at wholesale, it wasn't cheap. It was blooming size when we bought it and after growing it for 3-4 years we finally flowered it. As "seasoned" growers we tried everything we could think of; more light, cooler temperatures, less water, changes in fertilizer, etc., all with no luck until now. The plant looks no different than any other year, some divisions are even stronger than the ones that bloomed. So what I'd like to say is just to persevere, and don’t give up. Change what you can, and just be patient, the prize is well worth it.

Flowering This hybrid tends to bloom mostly in the late spring to early summer months with one to two flowers in the range of 3.5 to 4"

Light Paph. Vanda M. Pearman requires the same light as for other paphiopedilums, about 800-1000 foot-candles.

Temperature This plant likes intermediate to warm temperatures, with night temperatures from the mid to low 60's, and day temperatures in the 70's to 80's. Somewhat cooler temperatures can be tolerated during the winter months if the plant is kept a bit more on the dry side.

Humidity

across. Flowers are long lasting, and quite beautiful in colors of pink and burgundy. Flowering season is usually triggered by longer, warmer days, having come out of a somewhat drier period during the winter.

Repotting

The best time to repot Paph. Vanda M. Pearman is in the spring before flowering or in the fall at the onset of the dry Water season. Keep this plant dry for Water as this plant the first couple of weeks after approaches dryness. Allowing repotting in the fall. Use a the plant to just dry out between medium grade fir bark mix with waterings is important for this 10% charcoal and 15% perlite type of hybrid. In the winter, it added. Adding dolomite to the is best to keep the plant mix, dusting the top of the somewhat drier between medium will help this plant to waterings, perhaps watering perform better. every week and a half to two weeks rather than every 4-7 ...thanks to the days in the summer. By late Orchid Web website. March or early April, the plant should be getting moisture on a more continual basis. This plant This hybrid will grow well in humidity of 45% or above.

After 3 years, I'm blooming 2 standard Catt’s in a window at my house. Here is my L. purpurata var. Carnea; the plant I referenced above. Remember… PATIENCE.

New Jersey Pine Barren Orchids

2009 Summer Sale at Waldor Orchids June 19th & 20th Waldor invites you to our Annual Summer Sale. We will be offering 20% off all plants and supplies.

….. by Chrissy Schairer, a charter member of the Sandpiper Orchid Society, who is well known as an expert on the native orchids of the New Jersey Pine Barrens. June is another great month to look for orchids. You can find the Lily-leaved Twayblade, Liparis lilifolia and Grass Pink, Calopogon pulchellus, also known as Calopogon tuberosus. Lily-leaved Twayblade grows along oak forests from late May to late June. The flowers are a translucent purple color. As a result of the translucent color, it is difficult to find the Twayblade. One location I know of to find Twayblades is at “Head of the River” off of Rt 50.

Another wonderful plant blooming at this time is Grass Pink. The Grass Pink blooms from early May to late June. This plant is similar to Meadow Beauty and blooms at the same time. The flowers are purple in color and they look like they bloom upside down. Calopogons grow in boggy sphagnum areas. Some of the best locations to find Calopogons that I have found are the fields at Batsto, bogs within the Wharton State Forest and Greenwood State Forest, Great Creek Road Bog in Galloway, and along the roadside at 5th Avenue and Moss Mill Road in Mullica Township.
