From the Chairman, Michael Miller CPA You may have noticed that, over the past year or so, there has been heightened interest in Sanibel and Captiva, both in the media and around the Islands. This has not happened by chance. Our Chamber staff has worked hard to create a proactive media relations program with the objective of providing both local and national media with more and better information about Sanibel and Captiva. I thought I might share with you some of the ways they have been achieving this. Locally, we have sent regular news items and tourism information to our newspapers, websites, magazines and radio and TV stations. By distributing carefully prepared information about Chamber events, such as the 4th of July fireworks, Luminary, the Retail Expo and our 50th anniversary, they have managed to get some great media coverage. The staff has also targeted media outside Southwest Florida in the staycation market. Journalists active in markets such as Tampa, Sarasota and Miami have accepted our invitation to visit us and write about the unique beauty of our islands. Nationwide, Chamber staff identified and contacted important media in key states such as Massachusetts, New York, Illinois, Wisconsin and Ohio. Travel, Leisure and Lifestyle magazines have also received our press materials with the result that during the past year Sanibel and Captiva have been featured in key publications like the Miami Herald, the New York Times, Chicago Sun Times, Orlando Sentinel and the Boston Globe. We have also been featured in Travel and Leisure Magazine, Southern Living and Coastal Living. Internationally, markets like Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, Ireland and Sweden have been the focus of our communications efforts. Many of our members have commented on the increased frequency of visitors from these countries. On behalf of our Board of Directors I want to thank our Chamber staff for the results that their hard work has achieved. We look forward with added confidence to the coming season.
