‘Coming together is the beginning, Staying together is progress, Working together is success.’

Fantastic days at all the athletics competitions this year. Year 7’s qualified for county, year 8 boys came 8th and girls 4th out of 15schools, year 9 both boys and girls teams came 4th out of 8 schools. Some pupils manage to set PB records such as Kaci Palazon (7) shot 6.29metres, Ellie Stone(7) high jump 1.25m, Billy Read (7) javelin 20 metres, Haydon Ketteridge (7) discus 19.72metres, Josh Lee (8) 200m 27.40 seconds, Emma Wallis (8) javelin 27metres, Mikey Smith (10) shot 10.04 metres.

Year 7 boys and girls. Out of 15 schools who competed in the Western Area Athletics Competition boys finished 1st as winners and girls 3rd. This was an exceptional achievement where both teams qualified to the County Finals at Northgate Stadium in Ipswich later that month! At the County Finals both teams finished 4th in the County. Well done captains Hayden Lawrance and Ellie Stone!

Year 8 boys and girls athletics team. Boys finished 8th and girls 4th out of 15 schools

U13 boys cricket have played impressively this season. The boys won against Sudbury by 8 wickets, Castle Manor by 6 runs, Stour Valley by 24 runs. Captain was Evan Nortfield. Best bowler award to Josh Hulyer who was very economic every game and regular took wickets and key times. Best batter was Josh Lee who had to retire most times he batted and won us several games. He was also top run scorer!

Year 9 boys and girls athletics team. Both teams girls and boys came 4th out of 8 schools

U13 Boys tennis won 3 out of their 5 games, including teams they won against Thomas Gainsborough and Stour Valley. Unfortunately the team were runners up in their group and did not qualify. However this years squad were all year 7’s so they will be prepared and ready for next year!

We entered a yr 9 team into the west Suffolk league, despite lacking competitive game play experience they showed determination and grit in the face of defeat. Hollie McGerty in particular showed excellent leadership and tactical knowledge and we demonstrated excellent team batting consistency throughout.

Samuel Ward recently entered a team into the Western Area Golf competition. The team consisting of Jason Carpenter, Josh Hulyer, James Iron and Thomas Turner all performed well and were unlucky to miss out on a team trophy. Thomas however performed exceptionally well and won the Boys Nett Competition with a score of 61, meaning he had completed the 18 holes in 11 shots under his normal handicap. His best round ever!!

The Samuel Ward Sports day took place on Thursday 25th June and was the biggest yet. Every student in the school took part in both traditional track and field events and a sports team event. On a hot day every student performed well in their events and contributed towards their house total, once all the results from the different year groups had been collated Darwin were the eventual winners. Well done to all involved.

Since Sept - Jul the school has represented in various sports participating in over 160 competitions/events for sports leaders. Big Thank you to the PE Department, and well done to all pupils who took part!

SWA currently has over 90 sports leaders from years 7-11 enrolled as Young Leaders, Sports Leaders Level 1 and Sports Leaders Level 2. We have had loads of encouraging and positive feedback from the pupils and parents at the primary schools about the clubs we run. We have now been booked up for many events in the next academic year. Well done all sports leaders!
