Year 7 Rugby team had a fantastic start in their schools competitions. Despite only a handful of players have previously played a competitive match the school came runners up out of 14 schools in the Western Suffolk Competition. The team did not lose a game, drawing with the eventual winners and only missing out on top spot down to the number of tries scored. The whole team were excellent, but stand out performances came from Harry Cooper, Kyran Everitt and Louie Burke. This team have more fixtures arranged to look forward to and also the County finals on March 24th at Woodbridge Rugby Club where they will represent the area. Year 8 rugby team were involved in a tournament for western areas. There were 16 teams in total and SWA team came 3rd in their respective group, one place short on making the county finals. Team showed an amazing amount of cohesion and were expertly led by Bradley Sparrow.

This February half-term Samuel Ward Academy went out on their second annual ski trip. The 33 excited pupils and 4 enthusiastic staff travelled all 25 hours by coach to Foppollo, Italy. The group were blessed with a delightful hotel and the friendliest Hotelier in the World who looked to please our every need. On the first night in resort, we were lucky enough for it to snow over a foot and a half. Then the clouds cleared, and the sun came out, meaning conditions were perfect for skiing and snowboarding! Whilst the resort wasn't all that big, it did have several lovely runs down the mountain for beginners and some more challenging slopes for the more advanced. After a long day of skiing/boarding was over, the group would come back to delicious home cooked Italian food. Once this food was polished off by the ravenous students of SWA, we were quickly back into the thick of it with a fun packed aprèsski programme. Unfortunately, the fun had to come to and end at some point, and all pupils and staff made the long journey home (despite one pupil losing his passport). Everyone had an amazing time and would recommend to anyone to make sure they are on the trip next year.

Leaders SWA currently has 80 sports leaders from years 7 -11 enrolled as Young Leaders, Sports Leaders Level 1 and Sports Leaders Level 2. Last year sports leaders helped out at various events such as: Primary school experience days held at SWA, Kedington sports day, Thurlow sports day, Wickhambrook sports day, and the Go Run For Fun event with Olympic athlete Mark Lewis-Francis. This years new sports leaders have helped out at numerous events, for instance: scorers for U12, U13 , U14 home basketball games, scorers for U14 and U16 badminton tournament at SWA, Westfield after school clubs once a week- netball and handball, Kedington after school clubs twice a week- table tennis, netball, basketball, skittle ball, and football. And we have many more events planned for the rest of the year. We have had loads of encouraging positive feedback from the pupils and parents at the primary schools about the clubs we run. Kedington have also asked for our sports leaders to run their summer sports club too!
