Ready to try something new with Leeds University Union? Our Give It A Go sessions are a great way to try a club or society with no pressure to join afterwards. We have a range of trips to UK cities and attractions, helping you to see more of the country, along with film screenings, craft workshops and relaxation sessions – there’s always something to get involved with! Some sessions require you to book a ticket – make sure you do this early to avoid disappointment. Tickets can be purchased in two ways:

General Interest Thursday 28th January Anime & Manga Come along to our Give It A Go session to get an idea of how our regular showings work. Bring in anime films you want to showcase and together we’ll vote in five of them. Baines Wing Miall LT 2.34, 5.30pm – 9pm.

Thursday 28th January Monday 25th January BattleShop Hosted by the Pokémon Society Battling is a major part of the society, both casually and competitively. The Battle Shop is comprised of both of those aspects, and as such reflects the society's regular activities.

RockSoc Goes Bowling RockSoc takes over Merrion Centre bowling alley. Unlimited bowling all night with drinks and snacks available at the bar. Newcomers welcome, even if you don't have membership or couldn't make it to any socials last term, we're always wanting to meet new people. Wednesday 27th January

Leeds Model UN Society Debate current affairs as members of the United Nations and try to solve the world’s problems one resolution at a time. Our session is beginner friendly, and everybody is welcome, from veterans of the high school MUN circuit, to those who've never even heard of it. It's is a fantastic way to try your hand at debating with no strings attached. Parkinson SR B.08, 6pm – 7.30pm, £1.

"The Martian" Film Evening with Book Club

Saltaire Brewery Club

The first book we will be reading in 2016 is The Martian by Andy Weir. We will kick the term off by watching the amazing 2015 film adaptation of the book. Free snacks will be available.

We will be travelling to the Saltaire Brewery to taste some of the beers they put on over the day.

Quidditch & Harry Potter

Wednesday 3rd February

Come and decorate your own Quidditch broom, design a necklace, and play some board games with us. It's a nice relaxed atmosphere to play interesting games and gain obscure Harry Potter knowledge.

Whether you can only draw stick men or you're the next Matisse, life drawing is the ideal way to build your artistic skills and try something a little bit out of your comfort zone. In a really relaxed setting, you can draw our nude models to a soundtrack of ambient tunes. All snacks and drawing materials are provided.

Friday 5th February UML Presents: A Music Quiz Celebrate the end of exam season with an action packed music quiz from UML. There will fun rounds such as "who have we tried to draw?" and "do you recognise this song that we slowed down in Audacity?" Expert musical knowledge not needed. LUU – Old Bar, 6.30pm – 9.30pm.

Thursday 4th February Henna DIY Tutorial Henna Society From complete beginners to absolute pros, Henna Soc is perfect for all abilities. A chance to learn something new, build on your old skills, or just get in touch with your creative side, there is something for everyone. There will be a chance to learn designs in a tutorial, or freestyle to create something tailored to you. All you need to bring is yourselves, and snacks will be provided. LUU Room 2, 5pm – 6pm.

Hosted by the Harry Potter & Quidditch Society Inspired by Harry Potter, Quidditch is a mixture of rugby, dodgeball and handball. It is the UK's fastest growing fully gender inclusive sport. In this session we'll be providing some exciting drills that explore all aspects of gameplay as well as some scrimmages to get newcomers experiencing how Quidditch works in the real world. Wednesday 17th February AIESEC – Global Leadership AIESEC is the largest studentled organisation in the world. We develop global leaders by providing practical learning experiences. This leadership skills workshop is a chance to see how and why we do it. LUU Room 6, 2pm – 4pm.

Monday 22nd February Jurassic World Film Screening Sci Fi & Fantasy Join us for our weekly film and TV showing. This time we’ll be watching Jurassic World. LUU Room 5, 6.30pm – 9pm.

Folk Soc Spring Open Mic Night Our October Open Mic session was so successful we thought we would do it again! Come to listen or to play. There will be ballads and beards aplenty with space for lots of new faces and styles. We love music of all varieties. Packhorse Pub, 8.30pm – 10pm, £2.

Middle Eastern Studies Society The Arabic script is incredibly beautiful, so why not come along and learn how to write your name (or some else's), as well as greetings and other little phrases in Arabic?! LUUMS Chorus is a choir open to anyone who wants to come and sing, regardless of experience. We sing a range of music from classic pieces to Disney medleys.

LUUMS Brass Band is an open ensemble for any brass player to turn up and have some fun. We play all sorts of music, from traditional marches to film music.

Gliding is the ultimate free-flying experience. It is a truly diverse sport that can be enjoyed at all levels, where you can enjoy seeing the world from a different viewpoint, or perfect your basic flying skills. Mind Over Matter: Can Hypnosis Help in Psychosomatic Illness?

Hosted by Psyched The interaction between mind and body has long been studied and the most effective treatment for psychosomatic illness debated. Psyched is proud to present a talk from Dr Grahame Smith and Catherine Potter on whether hypnosis can be used as a tool to control psychosomatic illnesses affecting both mental and physical health.

Performance & Cultural Industries We would like to give all students a warm welcome to semester two with our popular Quiz Night! The quiz will be based around theatre, film and TV. Exploration of the Stations of the Cross

The Malaysian Society will bring you the theme of Colours of Malaysia. On the day of the event, four booths will be set up which are food, culture, traditional games and tourism. Each booth will be exhibiting different aspects according to the booth specification. We're also going to have performances during the event, which signify Malaysian culture such as traditional dances and martial arts.

Catholic Society As it's coming up to Easter, it's a great opportunity to see exactly what happened leading up to the Resurrection. Whether you're familiar with the story of Easter or not, come along to this interactive session to better understand what the big deal behind Easter really is.

TRIPS Saturday 6th February Stratford-upon-Avon Join Give It A Go on their trip to this beautiful market town. Featuring more than 800 years of history, there is plenty to explore including the buildings where Britain’s most famous poet and playwrite William Shakespeare grew up. Walk down the River Avon past the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, visit the Mechanical Art and Design Museum, and wander the shops and restaurants taking in the historical architecture. Saturday 13th February Manchester (with Manchester United Stadium Tour) Visit Manchester, the largest city in the North of England with lots to do including the Museum of Science and Industry, National Football Museum and Manchester Art Gallery. We are doing another Give It A Go workshop – a two hour workshop designed to give you a taste of what we're all about. No experience necessary – we want any aspiring directors, producers, writers, designers and/or performers to get involved! It will be a practical workshop focusing on devising, improvisation, physical theatre and fun. Bring yourselves and bags of enthusiasm!

Wednesday 3rd February Thai Boxing Thai Boxing or Muay Thai is a form of hard martial art originating from South-East Asia, most famously Thailand. The sport differs from kickboxing through its emphasis on the use of knee and elbow strikes as well as kicks and punches. All equipment is provided. Turn up in loose clothing. Get Lost in Otley Chevin with Orienteering & Fell Running Challenge your brain and legs in a beauty spot of Leeds. Learn to map read in woodland and test yourself in our hillside orienteering event. Horse Riding Hello fellow equestrians! We are opening up our stable doors to give those of you who have never ridden a chance to see what all the horsey hype is about and those who want to retake the reins a chance to get back into it. Want to try something new that puts both your body and your mind to the test? Then try Fencing! The only sport where you'll be able to fight with swords for the whole session. Wednesday 10th February Korfball Korfball is the only mixed team sport in the world. It is a team sport that both men and women can play together on equal terms, encouraging both teamwork and co-operation. It is a fast growing sport in the UK and all over the world, meaning plenty of competitive, fun matches around the country and internationally! The Edge Sports Hall 1A, 5pm – 7pm.

Thursday 11th February Women’s Football This is a free event where all abilities are welcome. The session will consist of fun games along with football specific drills before progressing onto friendly matches. It’s a great chance for you to give LUUWAFC a try and see whether it's something you're interested in getting involved in.

Saturday 13th February Caving Ever wanted to discover places that very few people ever see? Come caving and experience the rush of adrenaline you get when going somewhere totally new. We'll be heading underground in the Yorkshire Dales for a varied taster of the frequently overlooked sport. Meet at Parkinson Steps, 9am – 6pm, £30.

Ultimate Frisbee Ultimate Frisbee is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. It can be played both indoors and outdoors, men’s, women’s and mixed. It is self refereed and relies on integrity and spirit of the game to help overcome conflict resolution. It's fast paced, exciting and the BUCS #1 sport to try at university. A perfect opportunity for beginners or even people who have previously played and want to get back into the game, to come and experience and learn what LUUMCC can offer you. We are able to provide kit.

We'll be heading to a lake in the Dales for an afternoon of windsurfing. We have instructors and kit so all you need is a towel and a swimming costume. Beginners are welcome.

Want to experience life underwater? LUU Sub Aqua Club will be running scuba diving experience sessions in The Edge swimming pool. All you need to bring is a t-shirt, swimming costume and towel. The Edge Swimming Pool, 8.45pm – 10.30pm, £5.

That's right, and we're holding a session where we'll give a presentation to tell you all about how you can get involved with Leeds' most extreme society! Thursday 3rd March Karate A free taster of everything Karate Leeds has to offer, whether you're a complete beginner or a black belt. Including traditional karate training (Basics, Kata), as well as sparring and some self-defence. Beginners should wear loosefitting clothing. Cromer Terrace, 8pm – 10pm.

Thursday 10th March Rifle At Rifle Club we welcome complete beginners and experienced shots alike. For legal reasons attendees will need to fill out a Section 21 form at least two weeks prior – these forms will be sent to those who have purchased a place on the session. Wednesday 16th March Wakeboarding Wakeboarding is the UK's fastest growing sport, originating as a sub-sport of waterskiing. Any previous experience on any type of board will help, but this session is essentially for complete beginners, and as such we will ensure everyone gets the amount of coaching they need to make sure they get up on the water!
