Hi kids!

I love going to amusement parks. It can be so fun to go on rides and roller-coasters, eat yummy snacks, such as cotton candy or pretzels, and spend the day with friends or family. Canada has many great amusement parks, such as Canada’s Wonderland in Toronto, Calaway Park in Calgary, and Six Flags in Montreal. Have you been to any of them?

As fun as it is to ride a roller-coaster, waiting in lines is difficult. The lineups can be so long (and boring!), and it is hard to be patient while you wait.

The Bible teaches us what it means to be patient. Being patient is more than just waiting. It means going through an unpleasant situation without complaining or getting upset. This issue of Just for Kids will teach you an important Bible verse to help you stay patient the next time you’re stuck in a long line or facing an unpleasant situation.

Anyone who is patient has great understanding. But anyone who gets angry quickly shows how foolish they are.

—Proverbs 14:29

What does this mean?

Sometimes when we feel impatient, it can make us angry. The Bible tells us that people who have patience are very wise and do not get angry quickly. But if you can’t control this anger, you might do and say things that are hurtful or wrong.

Hi kids!

What did you have for dinner last night? I ate tacos. They were very yummy, and I was super hungry! I had to wait a while for my food to cook, but it was worth it for a delicious meal.

In the Bible, there is a story about a man named Esau who just couldn’t wait to eat his dinner. He was so impatient, he made a bad decision and traded something very valuable to him. Read this issue of Just for Kids to learn what the decision cost him.

And next time your dinner is taking too long to cook, remember to have patience!

TEsau’s Impatience

Genesis 25:24-34

here were two twin brothers named Esau and Jacob. When their mother, Rebekah, was pregnant, the babies inside her seemed to be fighting, and she was curious about what was happening. So, she asked God, and God told her that she had two nations inside her womb and that the older one would serve the younger one.

When it was time for the babies to be born, Esau came out first, and he was all red and hairy. His brother, Jacob, came out holding onto Esau’s heel.

As the brothers grew up, they turned out to be very different from each other. Esau loved the outdoors and was a skilled hunter, while Jacob worked at home.

One day, Esau came back from hunting feeling very hungry, and Jacob was cooking some lentil stew. Esau asked Jacob for some stew because he was so hungry. Jacob told Esau that he would give him the soup in exchange for his birthright. The birthright was like a special blessing and inheritance that usually went to the older son. Esau, not thinking much about the future and being very hungry, agreed and traded his birthright for a bowl of lentil stew.

Hi kids!

Would you ever cuddle with a cow? Despite their large, bulky bodies and stinky farm smell, cows are very loving and affectionate animals. In recent years, some farms have even introduced “cow therapy,” where people can spend time with (and hug) cows. How silly does that sound?

Cows might be smelly, but they are super cute! In the Bible, there is a story about a golden calf. Some people from Israel, called Israelites, became impatient while waiting for God. So, they made a bad decision and chose to worship the golden calf instead. Read this issue of Just for Kids to find out what happened to them.

As much as we can love animals, we should never put anything else before God. So, trust in Him and be patient.

The Golden Calf

Exodus 32:1-35

The Israelites were on a long journey through the desert, following Moses, who was their leader. Moses had gone up a mountain to talk to God, and the people were waiting for him to come back. But the Israelites became tired of waiting for Moses, and they began to worry. They wondered if he would ever come back. So, instead of waiting patiently, they went to Aaron, the high priest, and asked him to make them a new god.

Aaron took all their gold jewelry, melted it into a golden calf, and built an altar around it. They started worshipping it instead of God, and danced wildly around it.

When God saw what the people were doing, He was not happy. He told Moses about it, and Moses hurried down the mountain. When he saw the people worshipping the golden calf, he was very sad and disappointed. Moses talked to God and asked Him to forgive the people. God did forgive them, but there were consequences for their actions, and they were struck with a plague.

• Cows don’t need a lot of sleep —only about 30 minutes a day.

• They are very social animals and live in groups called herds. They can even form close friendships with other cows in their herd.

Hi kids!

Chances are you’ve had to wait for something or someone. Maybe you are waiting for a new bike for your birthday, but your birthday is a long time away. It can be hard to wait!

I remember waiting for my mom to pick me up from school. Sometimes if she was running late, I would have to wait. I would look out of the school window and watch for her car and when she arrived, I was relieved.

Once, there was a godly man named Simeon who was waiting for someone very special. Read this week’s Bible story to find out who. And remember, even when you have to wait patiently for something or someone, God is with you. He is very patient and can teach us to be patient, too.

Simeon Waits for Jesus

There was a good man named Simeon who lived in Jerusalem. He was waiting for God’s promise to Israel, that Jesus would be born, to come true. The Holy Spirit told Simeon that he would not die before he had seen Jesus.

Simeon went to the temple courtyard. Jesus’ parents, Mary and Joseph, brought the child in. Simeon took Jesus in his arms and praised God saying:

“Lord, You are the King over all.

Now let me, Your servant, go in peace.

That is what You promised.

My eyes have seen Your salvation. You have prepared it in the sight of all nations.

It is a light to be given to the Gentiles. It will be the glory of Your people Israel.”

Jesus’ parents were amazed by what Simeon said about Him. Simeon blessed them all. He told Mary that God had sent Jesus and that He would know people’s hearts.
