Someone must have told the ladies to “put your make up on, fix your hair all pretty,” because they were looking fairly done up – much more so than for your average surf movie – when they met in Atlantic City on July 16th. But this was more than just a surf movie premiere, it was the long awaited premiere of “Dark Fall”, the stunning actiondocumentary for NJ surfers about NJ surfers – specifically the ones who manage to scrap together a living in such an unlikely place to be pro surfers. And the premiere being at the House of Blues in Atlantic City was as fitting as the final segment, set to the Springsteen tune of the same name. You don’t normally see the ladies so decked out for surf films, nor do you see thrash bands like local boys JumpShip. You almost thought there was going to be “a rumble down on the promenade,” as the raucous crowd gathered in an evening of contagious stoke and ballistic local pride. The film itself, shot with the ultra-high def RED camera over two years at the Jersey Shore as well as Hawaii and Tahiti, takes the viewer through a year in the life, from the hectic work-party-surf-work schedule of the summer to the brutal but barreling winter (2010 was among the most wave-laden winters in years) to the glorious namesake autumn that we just can’t get enough of. In addition to the skilled storytelling and narration (by Ocean City’s Andrew Gesler) the film is highlighted with stunning cinematography. Catch the upcoming Monmouth County premiere in September. -Jon Coen

While wandering through Indonesia filming the award-winning surf movie The Drifter, Rob Machado met up with various friends for surf sessions on the best waves the Islands had to offer. Set across the vast Indonesian island chain, Melali: The Drifter Sessions features Rob Machado — one of the most stylish and skilled wave riders of our time. Melali returns to the fundamentals of surf cinematography by focusing on the surfing experience, the artful relationship between man and surf, and the sharing of this experience with good friends.

MELALI: THE DRIFTER SESSIONS // the new film from machado & steele Spearheaded by Machado and director Taylor Steele (the godfather of modern surf film), this two-disc set contains two versions of the 35-minute surf film, an audio CD of the original score, and a short film documenting the recording of the soundtrack. Joining Rob at the finest surfing locales Indonesia has to offer is an eclectic and world-class cast of wave riders: Dane Reynolds, Kelly Slater, Kalani Robb, Shane Dorian, Dan Malloy, Mike Losness, Marlon Gerber, and Rizal Tanjung. Set to an original score written by Jon Swift, Todd Hannigan, Fernando Apodaca, and Machado (The Melali Sessions Band), the music complements the imagery of the synergy born from longstanding camaraderie. “When we premiered The Drifter across the country, the best part of the night was the live improvisation with the band to the surf bonus footage,” Machado says. “That inspired us to make another movie with the unreleased surf footage and record some music as the score.” Swift, a fellow surfer and Machado’s friend of 25 years, led the intense creative push by this team of accomplished musicians, who recorded the score in a barn in rural southern California. The result is a diverse mix of musical compositions ranging from simple ballads to full band improvisations that captures a broad spectrum of moods tailored to the soulful and dynamic surfing.

The people, the food, the music, the juju. I see a lot of New Orleans in Asbury Park - both places are surrounded by water, feature uptowns with tree lined streets where the freak flags fly free. Cookman Ave. is our Magazine St., The Boardwalk is our Bourbon St.

AP HEART NOLA // words by Tim Donnelly

When the chance came to bring a bit of N’awlins in the form of GALACTIC to Asbury Park, I jumped at it like a kid going after Mardi Gras beads. The funk, rock, jazz jam collective will bring their signature sound to the Stone Pony on Wednesday August 4th. Opening will be this summer’s local break out band: Brick & Mortar. Bassist and Galactic co-founder Robert Mercurio is excited to come to Asbury Park, as the band will even spend their day off in the city. “The Stone Pony is special for us. Clarence Clemons is a hero. He and Bruce have kept the saxophone alive in rock n’ roll and to us, that means a lot.” A staple at such festivals as the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and Bonnaroo, GALACTIC also reflects the soul of the Crescent City, always there to help through their music. They were one of the bands telling the world about the devastation of Katrina through their music, but most of all just like us, they take care of the home front.

“How simple is it for us to do a show? Whether it was for Katrina and now for the oil spill, it’s a no brainer for us,” says Mercurio. We are directly affected by it as well because we live here. All we have to do is play music and it helps and it heals. I’ll do it every time.” -Tim Donnelly
