Dear Neighbors: We invite you and your family, once again, to read about the many exciting recreational opportunities offered to Salem residents through our Park, Recreation and Community Services Department. Even during the fall and winter months, the City of Salem is springing with activities and events for all ages to enjoy.

Many of the activities and events that have become popular over the years will return this season. Whether you enjoy running the Wild Turkey Race, shooting hoops on a Youth Basketball League team, or seeing the talents of your neighbors in the Carmen Thompson Variety Show at the Senior Center, there will be plenty of ways to stay busy this fall and winter.

Snow permitting, we will hold our fourth annual snowshoe race at the Olde Salem Greens golf course. Snowshoers of all levels have participated and I’m hoping to see an even larger crowd this year.

The programs offered through the Park, Recreation and Community Services Department are a great way for us to take advantage of everything Salem has to offer. The City’s parks and playgrounds are the envy of the region and, thanks to these wonderful natural resources, we can offer a wide array of programs, activities and events. I’m grateful for all the talented and dedicated staff members who make these wonderful opportunities possible.

Participating in Salem’s recreation programs ensures they will be available in the future, since all programs are financially supported by the Recreation Revolving Fund. This self-supporting fund generates revenue through registration fees and special events.

Regardless of your age, whether you’re interested in playing sports, arts and crafts, exercise classes or, perhaps, starting a new hobby, there is an activity for you. We hope you’ll take advantage of some of the scores of programs listed in this booklet. You won’t regret it.

TUMBLE WEEDS

Age: 2-3 years, with parent participation Date: Session I: Thursdays, Sept. 20 to Nov. 8; Session II, Thursdays, Nov. 15 to Jan. 17 (no class Nov. 22 and Dec. 27); Session III, Thursdays, Jan. 24 to March 21 (no class Feb. 21) Time: 9 to 9:45 a.m.

Fee: $45 Place: Senior Center, 5 Broad St. Along with valuable social skills, a USYGA-certified gymnastics instructor will teach children balance through tumbling, singing and dancing.

TUMBLE ROLLERS

Age: 3-5 years Date: Session I: Thursdays, Sept. 20 to Nov. 8; Session II, Thursdays, Nov. 15 to Jan. 17 (no class Nov. 22 and Dec. 27); Session III, Thursdays, Jan. 24 to March 21 (no class Feb. 21) Time: 10 to 10:45 a.m.

Fee: $45 Place: Senior Center, 5 Broad St. Similar to the Tumbleweeds program; however, in the Tumble Rollers program there will be no parental participation or snack provided. The class is limited to 10. Instructor: Joan Wilkins

PRESCHOOL YOGA

Age: 3-5 years Date: Wednesdays, Nov. 7 to Dec. 12 Time: 8:45 to 9:30 a.m.

Fee: $55 per child, $75 for two siblings Place: Senior Center, 5 Broad St. A fun way to introduce your child to yoga through games, poses, music and play. Yoga is great for all body types and helps foster positive self-image and physical flexibility. Yoga has been shown to help acclimate children to daily changes and reduce anxiety-related behaviors.

No yoga experience required. Have your child bring a small, peanut-free snack and water in a spill-proof container. Pre-registration required; class limited to eight. Instructor: Sandra L’Italien

LEARN TO PLAY GUITAR

Age: Grades 6-8 Fee: $35, includes book Date: Thursdays, Oct. 18 to Dec. 6 (no class Nov. 22) Time: 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Place: Senior Center, 5 Broad St. If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to play the guitar, this is the class for you. You’ll start learning how to read music and play guitar chords so you can begin playing your favorite songs. Bring your own guitar. Pre-registration is required. Instructor: A.J. Connolly

VIDEO BOOT CAMP

Age: 8-14 years Dates: Wednesdays, Oct. 3 to 24 Time: 3:30 to 5 p.m.

Fee: Free to Salem children Place: Salem Access TV studio, 285 Derby St. Learn the basic operation of Salem Access TV’s digital camcorders and video editing. Participants will use footage they shoot themselves to create a program in which they call the shots.

YOUTH HARRY POTTER LEGO PLAYLAND

Ages: 5-10 Fee: $50 Date: Saturday, Oct. 27 Time: 9 a.m. to noon Place: Senior Center, 5 Broad St. Create LEGO structures based on your own ideas. Work with thousands of LEGOs and Harry Potter LEGO characters. This program fosters individual creativity, as well as teamwork/cooperation skills. LEGOs stay with instructors, but the experience is yours forever.

Children will keep a framed picture of themselves and what they create, as well as a magical hands-on science experiment. Bring a nut-free snack and drink. Program limited to 25.

STAR WARS DAY

Age: 5-10 years; limited to 30 participants Date: Thursday, Feb. 21 Time: Jedi Training Workshop, 9 a.m. to noon; Star Wars LEGO Playland, 1:2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Fee: $50 per child per workshop; lunch supervision is included if registered for both workshops.

Place: Senior Center, 5 Broad St Jedi Training Workshop: Interested in becoming a Jedi student? Activities include: designing and making your own recycled Droid; making a training light saber and learning what it is to be a Jedi Knight. Bring a nut-free snack and drink.

Star Wars LEGO Playland: Use imagination to build Star Wars creations, like a Star Wars Space Craft, a Droid Factory, or a Jedi Training Arena. LEGOs stay with instructors, but the experience is yours forever. Children keep framed pictures of themselves and their creation, as well as a hands-on project they will make. AMERICAN GIRL DOLL CREATE & PLAY

Ages: 5-10 Fee: $50 Date: Saturday, Oct. 27 Time: 1 to 4 p.m.

Place: Senior Center, 5 Broad St. Bring your special friend (does not have to be an American Girl Doll; or feel free to bring a favorite stuffed animal) to this workshop. Each participant will design an item for their friend that they will both love. What you make and take home will lead to hours of continued play and enjoyment. Send your child with a nut-free snack and drink. Program limited to 20.

YOUTH MAD SCIENCE: NASA ACADEMY ACTING FOR YOUNGSTARS! OF FUTURE SPACE EXPLORERS Age: Grades 1-5 Grades: K-5 Fee: $99 Date: Oct. 1 to Dec. 3 (No class Oct. 8, Nov. 12) Time: 3:15 to 4:15 p.m.

Mad Science of Greater Boston brings you the excitement and wonder of space in the Academy of Future Space Explorers After-School Program, featuring exciting activities from the NASA Langley Center for Distance Learning.

The Academy of Future Space Explorers takes children on a voyage of discovery. With unique hands-on activities, amazing demonstrations and fun, educational take-homes, this experience is out-of-this-world. Topics: Planets & Moons, Atmosphere & Beyond, Space Phenomena, Sun & Stars, Rocket Science, Space Travel, Space Technology, and Living in Space.

Minimum enrollment for class to run is 12 children and the maximum is 20 children.

BABYSITTING COURSE

Age: 12-15 years Date: Thursday, Dec. 27, or Tuesday, Feb. 19 Time: 9:30 a.m. to noon Fee: $45 Place: Senior Center, 5 Broad St. Learn prevention, basic first aid, CPR, and what to do if someone is choking. Instructor Joan Wilkins has been teaching at the North Shore Medical Center since 1993 and has taught numerous babysitting, safety, First Aid and CPR courses. Participants will receive a certificate of completion.

Fee: $55 Place: Witchcraft Heights Elementary School This program explores techniques required to perform a character onstage in front of an audience, increase speaking skills and build overall confidence and creativity. This is done through a series of theater games and culminates in a showcase in front of an audience of family and friends. Class size limited to 12 students. SUPERHERO SQUAD NEW!

Ages: Grades K-3 Date: Oct. 3, 10, 17 and 24 Fee: $7 Time: 5-6 p.m.

Place: Senior Center, 5 Broad St. Promote your sidekick to superhero. Come dressed as your favorite crime fighter (or villain) and get ready to make superhero-themed crafts. Your tiny titan will learn about the origins of their favorite characters-and may even create some of their own.

YOUTH COMIC BOOK CLUB

Ages: Grades 4-6 Date: Feb. 27, March 6, 13, 20 Fee: $7 Time: 5-6 p.m.

Place: Senior Center, 5 Broad St. If your head spins when your child explains the difference between Robin, Nightwing and Red Hood, send them to Comic Book Club. Here, they can discuss the various incarnations of Robin, as well as many other age-old comic book questions, such as: “Who is faster, Superman or The Flash?” and “Who is Batman’s fiercest foe?” Students may bring their own comic books to class to share. The instructor will also provide some.

Note: Just like the movies, comic books come with ratings. Comic books that appeal to this age group are rated ‘T’ for teen and are appropriate for most readers 13 and up.

POTTERY FOR TEENS

Age: 13-18 years Date: Session I Sept. 21 to Oct. 26; Session II Nov. 2 to Dec. 14 Time: 4:30 to 6 p.m.

Fee: $250 Place: ClayWorks Pottery Studio, 53 Mason St. Join us in a small class environment with lots of individual instruction while you learn to throw on potter’s wheel and hand build with clay. Basic glazing techniques will also be taught.

POTTERY: HALLOWEEN

Age: 6-10 years Date: Oct. 3 and 17 Time: 4:15 to 5:45 p.m.

YOUTH POTTERY: CLAY TRINKETS

SECRET FAIRY GARDEN

Age: 6-10 years Date: Saturday, April 6 Time: 2 to 4 p.m.

Fee: $17, includes materials Place: Winter Island Function Hall (great art space with great views) Design and create a miniature fairy garden with flowers, small stones and dried natural products. Add a fairy house and some furniture made of natural materials such as twigs, acorns, stones, and shells. Add a fence to help keep your garden secret and a reflecting pool, too. Then, add your fairy and take home your completed garden. Class size limited to 15.

DESIGN AN AMUSEMENT PARK

Age: 6-10 Date: Saturday, Oct. 13 Time: 2-4 p.m.

Place: Function Hall at Winter Island Cost: $17, includes materials (minimum children needed: eight) Have an afternoon of fun using your imagination to create the amusement park of your dreams.

Be the designer, architect, engineer as you work with a variety of art materials to create a 3-D bird’s-eye view. What kind of rides will it have? What will make yours different than any

other? Are there certain things you need to include in your design? What will you call it? Local artist and art educator Paula Beaulieu will assist you with your ideas. Then, take home your completed amusement park.

PAINT PARTY FAMILY NIGHT

CRAZY COMBOS FAMILY NIGHT

Fee: $10 Place: Senior Center, 5 Broad St. See what interesting effects you can create when you mix up some unusual art combos.

Participants will use aluminum foil and acrylics to create textured art that shimmers. Loosen up, experiment and enjoy the process with your child. No painting experience necessary. YOUTH CHESS

Age: Grades K-5 Date: Tuesdays, Feb. 26, March 5, 12, 18, 25 Time: 6 to 7 p.m.

Fee: $7 Place: Senior Center, 5 Broad St. Volunteer Steve Dibble has taught and supervised chess for more than 1,000 children over the past 20 years. Participants will become skilled at playing the oldest game in the world against new friends in a fun, relaxed setting. No knowledge of chess is needed and children of all abilities are invited. Many of these children go on to play well in Salem’s Annual Chess Tournament, held on Saturday, March 31.

ANNUAL CHESS TOURNAMENT

Age: Grades K-5 Date: Saturday, March 30 Time: 9 a.m.

Fee: Free Place: Winter Island Function Hall Volunteer Tournament Director Steve Dibble will host this double-elimination tournament in a low-pressure way, teaching good sportsmanship. Trophies will be awarded to the top four players. The tournament is exclusively for Salem residents. This event will determine the 2012 City of Salem Youth Chess Champion.

Pre-registration is encouraged.

TENNIS (YOUTH)

Age: 6-12 years Date: Thursdays, Oct. 4 to 25 Time: 6-7 p.m.

Fee: $35 Place: Salem Willows tennis courts Learn the elements of the tennis court and how to keep score. Lessons will focus on the proper way to serve and hit, as well as all strokes.

OPEN GYM PROGRAM

Age: Grades K-5 Date: Fridays, Jan. 4, 11, 18, 25, Feb. 1 and 8 Time: 5 to 7 p.m. for grades K-2; 7:15 to 9 p.m. for grades 3-5 Fee: Free to Salem children Place: Bates Elementary School Instructors will supervise youth and organize games during these drop-in open gym hours.

Parents are asked to sign their children in at drop-off and sign them out upon pickup. If Salem schools are dismissed early or closed due to snow, the program will be canceled for that night.

YOUTH BASKETBALL CLINIC

Age: Grades 3-5 Fee: $30 Date: Thursdays, Jan. 10 to Feb. 14 Time and Place: TBA This six-week program is designed to introduce basketball skills in a fun and exciting way. The drills and game play are designed for children of this age group in a way that they’ll have fun while learning and developing. Skills targeted will be; ball handling, shooting, passing and defense. Children of all skill levels are welcomed and individual attention will be given to each participant with their particular level of play in mind. Pre-registration is required. Instructor: Jamie Campbell, former coach for both Salem High and Marblehead.

CARTOON LEAGUE HOOPS

Age: 5 and older Date: Registration is Saturday, Nov. 24 Time: 9 a.m. to noon Place: Register at Senior Center, 5 Broad St. Children may stay in the program until they feel comfortable moving up to the more competitive Recreation League. For information, call Leo Higgins at 978-741-1893.

WINTER BASKETBALL LEAGUE

Age: Boys and girls, 9-15 years Fee: $40 Place: Registration at Senior Center, 5 Broad St. Registration will be held on Thursday, October 4, 5 to 8 p.m. If unable to attend the registration night, stop by the Senior Center during office hours in September to register. HOLIDAY COLORING CONTESTS

Celebrate the holidays with the Salem Park, Recreation & Community Service Department’s Holiday Coloring Contests, open to children from Salem, up to age 12. Entries must be the child’s own work, with a limit of one entry per child. Paint, crayons, markers or pencils may be used. Use your imagination! SANTA’S MAILBOX

Santa will have a mailbox at the Salem Park, Recreation & Community Service Department!

Children up to age 8 are welcome to mail their letters to Santa, in care of the Recreation Department, and he will mail a reply. Santa’s mailbox opens Monday, Nov.12. Letters must be received by Monday, Dec.17, in order to give our Santa plenty of time to respond. Program is free, but include a self-addressed stamped envelope with your letters. This program combines fast and slow rhythms that tone and sculpt the body using an aerobic/fitness approach to achieve a unique balance of cardio and muscle-toning benefits. Dancers and nondancers alike can immediately master a ZUMBA class. Exercise in a healthy, fun, party-like environment. Instructor: Don Bizzaro, Licensed ZUMBA teacher.

BEGINNER BALLROOM DANCING

It is dedicated to preserving and interpreting the social history and material culture of the 17th century, as well as providing information about the Salem witchcraft trials of 1692 and their connection to the house’s longtime owner, Judge Jonathan Corwin. The Witch House, listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of Salem’s historic McIntire District, was built between 1642 and 1675. It is the only home in modern Salem with direct ties to the witchcraft trials of 1692. The Witch House was restored to its

17th-century appearance in 1945 by Historic Salem, Inc., and opened to the public in 1947. Hosts are committed to providing an exemplary program that interprets history, architecture and collections in a relevant, educational and engaging way. Self-guided admission is $8.25 for adults, $6.25 for seniors (62 and older), $4.25 for youths (6-14), free for children under 6. AAA members receive $1 off. Guided tours are an additional $2.25. ADULT FITNESS RACE SERIES 2013 The Salem Race Series gives runners a chance to experience a wide variety of seasonal events. The annual Medicare Open Enrollment starts Oct. 15 and ends on Dec. 7, during which people may enroll in a new plan or change Medicare coverage for the following year. We offer curb-to-curb transportation to and from the Senior Center, 5 Broad St., as well as to medical appointments, stores, and other places in and around Salem. Vans are handicapaccessible (please specify when reserving a ride), and are available Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Reservations are required two business days in advance and donations are accepted. Nutrition

Hot, nutritious meals are available, with prior reservation, Monday through Friday, 11:30 a.m., at the Senior Center. Home-delivered meals are offered to homebound elders. A donation is requested. Call 978-744-0924.

Social Services

Licensed Social Workers provide information and referral, support and assistance to folks who have questions or concerns. They can assist with problems related to Social Security, health insur-

ance, housing and many other personal issues.

Wellness Clinic

A registered nurse is available, during certain regularly scheduled hours, for checking blood pressure, reviewing medications and conducting a variety of health screenings. Explore a new path by volunteering. We have a wonderful group of volunteers at the Senior Center. F.Y.I. DOG PARK

The Salem Dog Park is located at Leslieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Retreat Park on the North River, off North Street. A yearly Pooch Pass is required. They may be purchased during office hours at the Park, Recreation & Community Services Dept., 5 Broad St., for $25. Proceeds are dedicated to maintaining and improving the Dog Park. For the safety of park users, to purchase a Pooch Pass you must present your town/city dog license, documentation from your vet that your dog is current on rabies and distemper, and is spayed or neutered. The Dog Park was built by Salem Play Areas for Canine Exercise (SPACE), a 501(c)(3) non-profit group that continues to work to improve the park.
