CSJ Sponsored Schools Unite to "Serve the Dear Neighbor"

Name: Alicia

Valladares '18 Accomplishment: Alicia was a recipient of the 2016-17 "Bishops' Scholarship for Excellence Award." She was one of eight students who received the award. Alicia's awardwinning essay explained how accepting the Holy Eucharist in her heart helps her avoid temptation and make good choices in her life. Fun Facts: Alicia volunteers throughout the school year at the Arrupe Neighborhood Partnership."I love building relationships with the children. It's rewarding to help them understand how to make good choices regarding what they eat and in life. It's also fun to help them explore possible careers and how to get there." This past summer, Alicia was among the students who went on a CSSJ Leadership Conference in Kansas City, MO (see "CSJ Schools Unite" article for more information). She is a member of the Unity Club and the CARE Club. Alicia's favorite subject is English

L-R (Juniors): Lucy Casper, Mary Sessions, Kayla Lenahan, Jadalise Pacheco, Isabel Sandoval, Marisleysis Gonzalez, Jocelyn Perkins, Alicia Valladares

In June, eight SJA students participated in the CSSJ Leadership Conference. They traveled to Kansas City, MO to join students from other CSJ sponsored high schools, such as St. Joseph Academy (Baton Rouge, LA), Nazareth Academy (Chicago, IL), Mount Saint Joseph Academy (Philadelphia, PA) and St. Teresa's Academy (Kansas City, MO) and two students from LycĂŠe Saint Jacques de Compostelle (Le Puy, France). The purpose of the trip was to understand and experience leadership through the charism of the Sisters of the Congregation of St. Joseph. A portion of the time students gleaned strawberries, which were then donated to area food pantries and food banks. They also spent time at the Journey House, a home founded by four nuns who wanted to help women transition from incardination to being capable of going back into society rather than prison or the streets. During their time at the House, students listened to the former inmates' stories and planted a vegetable garden for them. Throughout their time together, students spent time praying and reflecting upon their experience. "The CSSJ Leadership Conference was an amazing experience," said Jocelyn Perkins '18. "I got closer to not only the girls I attend school with, but also with the others from our sister schools in other states! I also gained the desire to do more service and help others in my community through my experience."

Guardian Angel Box Located in the Chapel

Location: Columbus, OH (2 hours from Cleveland Metropolitan) Enrollment: 42,000 Undergraduates Strongest Programs: A top 25 public university and a top 10 research school; known for business, pre-med, engineering, education Fun Facts: With the opening of a new state-ofthe-art recreational facility for students, OSU has more square feet dedicated to recreation and fitness than any college or university on the planet www.osu.edu

Feeling blue? Worried about a friend or acquaintance? The Guardian Angel box is in the Chapel, placed above the petitions for prayers/special intentions, to help. Students may place notes in the box when there is a concern about themselves or someone else. The purpose of the box is to open communication if students are dealing with issues that could have serious consequences. This program was started six years ago when a Saint Ignatius High School senior, Joe, "Ski", Anielski, committed suicide. His parents believed he suffered from undetected and untreated depression. Their thoughts are that if only one person may have written a note, maybe the outcome would have been different for their son. Since that time, the Anielskis have been providing Guardian Angel boxes (also called the SKI boxes) to schools from kindergarten through college throughout Ohio, West Virginia and Tennessee. Students, please continue to notify a responsible adult, teacher, coach, counselor or administrator if you have concerns about someone or yourself. The Guardian Angel box will be checked daily and appropriate action will be taken with the information that is provided. Questions? Please contact School Counselor Maryann Marek here.

Love to Perform? Auditions for Fall Musical, 'Play On!', Are Just Around the Corner "Play On!" is a hilarious story of a theater group trying desperately to put on a play in spite of maddening interference from a haughty author who keeps revising the script. Auditions are September 6 and 7 at 3:30 p.m. in the auditorium. Show dates are Friday and Saturday, November 4 and 5, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, November 6 at 2:30 p.m. New this year, tickets will be available to buy online. For more information, contact Drama Director Ms. Anne Chriszt at achriszt@sja1890.org.
