Letter from the President Dear Alumnae, Parents and Friends of Saint Joseph Academy, Certainly one of the joys of my role at the Academy is my interactions with the students. I find these young women to be a delight, in their learning and their yearning to grow intellectually, socially and spiritually. 3430 Rocky River Drive • Cleveland, Ohio 44111 216-251-6788 www.sja1890.org

aint Joseph Academy, rooted in the spirituality of the Congregation of St. Joseph, promotes academic

excellence, fosters love and unity with God, one another, and all creation and educates young women for compassionate leadership

This past summer, I had the experience of participating in an immersion service program with eight students and one of our teachers, Ms. Alison Barberic J’01, as we painted a home and helped replace a roof for a woman in rural Kentucky. Yes, the students worked hard in the hot weather. All of us gained an appreciation for the manual labor involved. But what brought me the most satisfaction was seeing them interact with the people of Appalachia with genuine joy and openness. They focused on what we all have in common as daughters and sons of God. Our students brought sunshine into the lives of people who have had a difficult time. As we reflected each evening with prayer, our young women were thankful for their many gifts and committed to sharing what they had with others less fortunate. I was inspired by these teenagers and their gift of self. Surely we are doing something right at Saint Joseph Academy, to be blessed with young women like these who are a living witness to the Gospel message of Jesus Christ - whatever you do for the least of my brothers and sisters, you do for me. Another moment of joy for me is meeting with alumnae, especially when we gather for reunions. In October, the Academy hosted our fifth Grand Reunion, when all the graduates marking milestone reunion years are joined together for a festive celebration. There were peals of laughter and heartfelt hugs as these classmates greeted each other. For some, decades had passed since they were last together, but the years of separation quickly melted away. Seeing this evidence of friendship and love is also inspiring. What is it about our years shared at Saint Joseph Academy that forever binds us together? In this season of Advent, as we prepare the way of the Lord, I am reminded of the many blessings that have been bestowed on Saint Joseph Academy and its many women, the young women currently at the Academy and those from years gone by, including the Sisters of the Congregation of St. Joseph who continue to guide and inspire us. So it is with a grateful heart that I wish you and yours all the blessings of this holy season and a happy, healthy 2009!

and service in a global society. Sursum corda! Lift up our hearts!

The Literacy Initiative at SJA: Information Technology Literacy Google used to be a noun, a web site, a tool that helped people find information on the Web, but ask most students, and, indeed, their parents, to search for information, and Google suddenly becomes a verb, a word of action. “I’ll Google that!” However, the results of the search may lead to confusion rather than enlightenment when the hit list yields millions of results. This glut of available information makes educating students to become information literate citizens more vital than ever. The Ohio Department of Education, the American Library Association, the Association for Educational Communications and Technology, the International Society for Technology in Education, and the National Forum on Information Literacy,1 among others, have all included information literacy as part of their 21st century skills standards. Although the wording is somewhat different among the various groups mentioned, the competencies of an information literate person include these common elements: the ability to know when there is a need for information or a problem to solve;

the ability to identify, locate, and evaluate information; the ability to deal with information in a legal and ethical manner; and the ability to effectively use information in order to produce a product, solve problems, or create new knowledge. Saint Joseph Academy recognizes that lifelong learners will use these information literacy skills well beyond the need to write research papers in high school and college. All grade nine English classes include a twoweek information literacy unit taught in the Saint Joseph Academy Library/Media Center by teacher-librarians. The librarians stress all of the competencies needed by an information literate person, but they begin by asking students to discuss, reflect, and

write about the information needs they may face outside of the classroom. The information literacy skills can be applied not only to academic problems, but also to simple issues such as which car to purchase, or where to go to college, or life-changing decisions such as which presidential candidate to vote for or which physician to trust with open heart surgery. Of course, the unit covers such topics as plagiarism, developing a search strategy, checking for author credentials and bias, Internet safety, and evaluating information for relevancy, timeliness, and reliability. Teachers help students recognize that effective problemsolving and informed decision-making need to be guided by a plan that includes all of the steps leading to information literacy and successful problem solving. Google, Wikipedia, Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, and Digg are not dirty words. They are the comic books, the dime novels, rock ’n’ roll music, Captain Billy’s Whiz Bang, and pool hall of the 21st century. They are here to stay, until something different comes along tomorrow, and we need to acknowledge them, embrace them, and teach our students their strengths and weaknesses as they become information literate, life-long learners. Grandparents’ Day a Great Success This year over 150 grandparents joined their freshmen granddaughters for lunch in the Academy auditorium for the second annual Grandparents’ Day celebration. This is a unique opportunity for grandparents to learn about their granddaughter’s high school and the programs available. A special lunch was prepared for the attendees who really seemed to enjoy the chance to have lunch together on a school day!

Mrs. Yuanjing Liu who teaches English in Qingdao said, “We truly enjoyed our visit to Saint Joseph Academy. In China, we are trying to reform our educational system by having students participate and discuss ideas as they do here in America. We look forward to working with Saint Joseph Academy in the future.” Mrs. Menard invited the teachers to work with our teachers and students on some science and mathematics projects through the Internet. “It’s great to have the opportunity for our young women to collaborate and problem solve with students in China. This really prepares them for the future in a global economy,” she remarked.

Welcome, Mrs. Sun For a second consecutive year, the American Councils for International Education has awarded a grant to Saint Joseph Academy to provide a faculty member to teach Mandarin Chinese at the Academy for the 2008-2009 school year. The State Department program provides secondary schools in the U.S. with programs in Chinese and Arabic with faculty from China and Jordan, respectively. Saint Joseph Academy is one of only 19 schools approved from applications submitted from across the country, and only one of two schools to receive a grant for a second year. Mrs. Xiaobo Sun is teaching Mandarin Chinese I, II, and III, and moderates the Chinese club. She also plans to chaperone the Academy’s spring trip to China. Mrs. Sun grew up in Tengzhou in northern Shandong province. She graduated from Shandong Normal University in 2002 with a BA in English Education and has been teaching English in Qingdao Number

Exchange teachers selected for the program must have at least the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree and at least five years teaching experience in their home country, and must also speak English fluently. At the end of the academic year, the teachers return to Washington, D.C. for a conference to report on their experiences teaching and living in the U.S. “I am excited to be here. I really enjoy being with the students in the classroom. The girls are very attentive and excited to learn Chinese. I am also learning quite a bit about America and its culture at the same time,” said Mrs. Sun. Saint Joseph Academy Principal Audrey Menard added, “Our students are very

Saint Joseph Academy Welcomes

Class of 2012 The arrival of the Saint Joseph Academy Class of 2012 was eagerly anticipated. At the start of school, 192 freshmen joined the sophomores, juniors and seniors. As is typical of our current SJA community, these young ladies bring us diversity from nearly 55 elementary schools and 24 cities. The message we hear is that SJA is worth the trip! Also typical of our students, the incoming class has many legacy ties to the Academy. Students are considered “legacies” when they have a

mother or grandmother who has graduated from either St. Therese Academy, Nazareth Academy, or Saint Joseph Academy. In the Class of 2012, there are 50 legacy students – 37 with mothers that are alumnae and 13 with grandmothers. The freshmen also have 40 sisters that have either graduated from SJA or are in attendance now. Of special note, two of our freshmen are fourth-generation students

attending the Academy after their mothers, grandmothers, and great-grandmothers. As we continue to see declining enrollment among elementary schools, it is both exciting and rewarding to see the Academy’s enrollment remain at full capacity. We credit our success to the coordinated efforts of our dedicated faculty, our welcoming and informative students, and our diligent administration and Admissions team.

SJA student receives Bishop Anthony Pilla Scholarship Saint Joseph Academy senior Joan Yokie was chosen as a recipient of the Catholic Education Endowment Trust scholarship. The scholarships are named in honor of Bishop Emeritus Anthony Pilla. The program awards six scholarships to high school students entering their junior or senior year and 16 scholarships to students entering the 7th or 8th grade. One of the requirements is an essay. This year’s entrants were asked to write an essay on the prophet Job, who kept his faith through disaster and misfortune. For Joan and her family, living like Job and keeping the faith against overwhelming odds is exactly how you could describe her life over the past 17 years. The Yokie’s were a happy middle-class family until civil war broke out in Liberia. Joan was born in a refugee camp. During the war, fearing for their safety, they fled Liberia for Sierra-Leone where her parents made great sacrifices to enroll their children in Catholic school. In 1999, when the war spread to Sierra-Leone, the family again had to leave everything behind. After years of living in refugee camps, struggling for basic necessities like food, clothing and shelter, the family was selected for resettlement in the United States. And like Job, they had kept their faith.

Joan is very active at Saint Joseph Academy and around the area. She is a member of the Unity Club and an office assistant. Joan volunteers with S.T.A.I.R.S. (Steps Toward Advancing In Resettlement Skills) Girls Teen Group, and serves meals to the homeless at St. Colman parish. She is also involved in the Esperanza Youth leadership program and the C.A.A.O. (Consortium of African American Organizations) Youth Innovation Forum. This summer, Joan was selected to participate in the Oelschlager Summer Leadership Institute at the University of Akron. According to her Guidance Counselor, John Ryan, “Joan is an extremely outgoing young woman who, even with

her life experiences, puts a positive spin on everything. She is someone I will remember long after I retire.” Describing her life, Joan says, “In my own experience, my Catholic education has helped me gain better insight into the sorrows and misfortunes that befall us in life.” She continued, “Being here in the United States with my family, and attending a very good Catholic school like Saint Joseph Academy, has taught me the guidelines of a good Catholic Christian life. I apply this to my daily life and hope to continue throughout my entire life.”

Saint Joseph Academy drama group performs “Into the Woods” Saint Joseph Academy drama group performed the Steven Sondheim and James Lapine musical, “Into the Woods” in November. Directed by Music Department Chairperson, Patrick Janson the musical is an interesting twist on the fairytales we remember from our youth. According to Mr. Janson, “This is a story about lessons learned.” He continued, “The show explores what happened to the characters after they got their wishes, where sometimes their choices led to dire consequences. In the end the characters learned community and sticking together in even the toughest times.” The show features Red Riding Hood (Idaliz Baez J’09), Cinderella (Sara Masterson J’09), Snow White

Saint Joseph Academy Celebrates the Charism of the Congregation of St. Joseph Celebrating the charism of our founding Sisters, the Congregation of St. Joseph, is a yearly tradition at Saint Joseph Academy. Fostering this spirituality of the charism within the Academy community is important, and helps both students and faculty alike to deepen their spirituality. The charism theme this year focuses on being one with creation, and it teaches the idea of loving and caring for the earth. In September, the school year began with a prayer service that honored the significance of water in our lives both at a spiritual level with the baptismal promises of Jesus Christ and at the physical level as one of the essential elements of earth and of life. The entire SJA community 8

Saint Joseph Academy UPDATE

was given a BPA-free water bottle printed with the words “We are one with Creation,” and the SJA logo. The water bottles not only offer inspiration, but they also provide students with a visible opportunity to live out the charism. Students are encouraged to use the reusable water bottles during the school day, translating into fewer disposable water bottles in the trash. The students were also asked to help with a special project. For twenty-five years, civil war ravaged the nation of the Sudan, causing the deaths of over two million people and orphaning or displacing more than 27,000 boys who were separated from their families. With the help of aid organizations, several of the boys eventually settled in Cleveland. Sr. Mary Frances Harrington, CSJ, mentored these “Lost Boys”, including a young man named Isaac. Now grown, Isaac has traveled back to the Sudan to return to a village which has only one well for 41,000 people, leaving many to use contaminated waters from the river. Isaac, along with others have started a project called Isaac’s Wells. The project seeks to raise money to help build wells in Isaac’s village, so that the villagers have access to an adequate and safe water supply. The students began fundraising efforts for Isaac’s Wells which represents one of the many ways Saint Joseph Academy is manifesting the spirit of the charism. “Our celebration of water is rooted in being one with creation. This expression of the symbolism in our faith is exciting, profound and invigorating when we celebrate together as one community,” according to Dr. Darlene Khoury, Saint Joseph Academy Campus Minister.

(Housing Oriented Ministries Established for Service), a Christian organization based in Southeastern Kentucky that provides home improvement services for disadvantaged families. The students spent the week roofing and painting a house for a woman in rural Kentucky. The students were immediately impressed by how friendly everyone in the area was, and how much the homeowners valued their commitment to serve others. Senior Lauren Patton said, “This was the best part of the trip, getting to meet people who needed help, and then doing what they needed. It was awesome!” Theology teacher Alison Barberic noted, “The students were remarkable. They immediately recognized that their mission was not just to roof and paint a house, but to spread the love of Christ to the people we served.” Junior Ellen Wallenhorst remarked, “I did things that I have never done before, for people that I had never met. I got to know them, and we became friends. It was a

great week.” Senior Campbell McNeeley added, “It was so heartwarming to see the homeowner’s reaction when we finished. I can’t wait to go back next year!” While there, the group also practiced “living simply” by making and sharing meals, and sharing conversation and spiritual reflection. Ms. Barberic commented, “I was humbled and impressed by the students’ willingness to serve their dear neighbors. They represented the spirit of Saint Joseph Academy that I have come to know so well.” Senior Maureen Wolf summed up the whole experience by saying, “We learned to scrape, prime, paint, roof, and to serve others. All this, and we even learned to square dance!” At the end of their week of service, it has become a tradition of each group of

students to paint a mural to commemorate their experience. The students chose to paint the quote from Margaret Mead that began this article because a small group did come together and indeed changed a small part of the world. As part of the Saint Joseph Academy spirituality experience, all students perform service hours each year. “After working in the corporate world and now in my third year as president of the Academy, I felt that I too should experience some service hours. Reflecting on our trip, it was an honor to work alongside these eight young women who so cheerfully served Christ by serving those less fortunate than us,” remarked Mrs. Corrigan-Davis. Development 2008-2009 Annual Fund Kick-off Every year, young women graduate from Saint Joseph Academy ready to become compassionate leaders. However, an excellent high school education is not affordable for every student that wants to attend SJA. In today’s economy, it is getting more difficult to find and keep the resources necessary to ensure success for all. That is why your help is vital. Saint Joseph Academy continues to provide tuition assistance each year to deserving students who otherwise could not afford the chance to attend this great Catholic high school. Over 54% of our students receive some tuition assistance,

although we are unable to meet every family’s needs. When Pope Benedict XVI visited Washington earlier this year, he encouraged us to make our Catholic schools accessible to all through our financial support. In fact, he said, “It provides a highly commendable opportunity for the entire Catholic community to contribute generously to the financial needs of our institutions. Their long-term sustainability must be assured. Indeed, everything possible must be done in cooperation with the wider community to

Erika Krasienko J’09 with Tom and Patricia Kramer Holland J’55 at the Endowed Scholarship Luncheon

Endowed scholarships help many young women attend Saint Joseph Academy. These bright, talented and articulate young women are given the chance to succeed through the generosity of many people who have honored a family member, friend or former teacher, or even set up a scholarship in their own name to honor their experience as a former student of the Academy. Kathy Robinson, Director of Development said, “We thought this luncheon would be a nice way for donors to meet the girls their scholarship supports and for the girls to get to know their sponsors.”

Many donors met their scholarship recipients and learned about their interests. Senior Erika Krasienko met her sponsors, Tom and Patricia Kramer Holland J’55, who came from Boston for the event. “We had a wonderful time, I really enjoyed meeting the Hollands and to thank them for opportunity.” Mrs. Marie Konys, whose family set up the Dr. Harry and Marie Konys Scholarship remarked, “I really enjoy getting to know the girls and watching them grow.” If you are interested in establishing a scholarship, please contact Kathy Robinson, Development Director at, 216.671.0166.

Business Entr

Joan (Joey) Dever Conrad J’49

Joan Conrad’s initial foray into a familyowned business came shortly after her marriage to Edward Conrad Jr. in 1951. She was working for the FBI after attending Notre Dame College in Euclid when her husband and his brother were called to serve in the Korean War. Joan replaced them at their family’s business, Conrad’s Church Goods. As the years passed, Joan and Ed nurtured a desire to start their own business, and in August 1969, they opened the first Conrad’s Total Car Care and Tire Center location in

Parma. In the 39 years since, Joan and Ed have grown their business to 30 Conrad locations in five counties throughout greater Northeast Ohio. The wife and husband team also own and operate Elyria Spring Manufacturing, which makes springs for industrial use, and S & H Industries, an automotive after-market products company. According to Joan, she and Ed chose tires and car care because these were commodities all households would need. As a team, they divided and conquered, with Joan handling the administrative work—payroll, accounts receivable, accounts payable, financial reporting, insurance, inventory—and Ed overseeing the operations. Nearly 40 years later, Joan and Ed are still involved in the overall operations of their company. Both talk to the office every day. It’s one of the attributes Joan says is imperative for owning a business—a commitment to many hours of hard work. But the satisfaction of controlling your destiny, and the sense of independence gained, more than compensate. Joan’s entrepreneurial spirit was stoked

during her years at Saint Joseph Academy. She credits the school and the Sisters with helping her grow in the Catholic faith, giving her great discipline, teaching her the highest standards of ethics in life, and instilling leadership in her. In fact, in each of Joan’s years, she held a leadership position: as a freshman homeroom prefect, a sophomore Sodality leader, and junior and senior class president. The Sisters’ teachings provided a great basis for being a goal-oriented entrepreneur. The business curriculum fueled Joan’s desire to someday own a company. Sister Mary David’s business classes—and her disciplined style— were very influential to Joan. While she thrived academically—and earned an academic scholarship to Notre Dame —Joan also gained lifelong friends at SJA. She remembers being very proud to spend time outside on the Academy’s beautiful campus. And she loved attending school dances, especially her senior prom with Ed. In fact, her affection for and dedication to her alma mater continued after graduation, as Joan served on the Academy’s board of directors in 1989 and

Nancy knew she’d get a good education there. Many years later, after being trained as a recruiter for an executive search firm, her instincts prompted her to start her own business. NS Charney & Associates, a recruiter for manufacturers of medical diagnostic and biomedical equipment, opened its doors in 1994 and currently has a staff of six full-time and one part-time employees. Operating a business wasn’t Nancy’s longterm dream; she just needed to make a change. She realized the clients at the search firm where she had been employed were interested in working with her, not necessarily the firm itself. In time, she also concluded there was no one else in the city for whom she wanted to work. She knew her industry, and she knew

herself: she thrived in a commission-based profession like recruiting when the harder one works, the more placements one makes, the greater the rewards. So she made the leap— and hasn’t looked back. In fact, sustaining her business for 14 years is what Nancy considers her greatest professional accomplishment. She’s been able to make a difference in people’s lives by mentoring employees and by guiding people toward careers they might never have thought of. And there’s a life-affirming certainty that her business is exactly where she’s supposed to be right now—where she can grow to become, in her own words, “a better me”. Nancy graduated from Baldwin-Wallace with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Interpersonal

also worked on the school’s first capital campaign committee. During their 57 years of marriage, Joan and Ed raised four children along with growing their business, making them partners in every sense of the word. Ed III works in real estate; Mary Jo is an attorney; Sharon is a CPA and CFP (who works for the company); and Bob is an investment adviser. All six members of the family are actively involved on the board of directors in running the companies and planning their future. Joan enjoys traveling and golf—and being “grandma” to nine grandchildren, ranging in age from five to 22 years. In May 1996 Joan and Ed were privileged to attend a Mass celebrated by Pope John Paul II in his private chapel at the Vatican. After Mass, they met the Pope, “It was a spiritual, uplifting experience,” fitting for a woman who has always placed great reliance on her faith and considers herself very blessed by the opportunities she has had.

Tricia Rhea was just a baby when her father started Norton Industries, an innovator of creative ceiling ideas. Today she serves as vice president of the Lakewoodbased company, a position she’s held since 1998. Her responsibilities include oversight of marketing and design directives, customer service philosophy and guidance, management of a national sales staff of 26 and product design concepts. Additionally, she manages the daily financial activities and participates on the board of the corporation. She works alongside her father, Jack, who is the company’s president, and her husband of six years, Alan, who serves as general manager. She considers herself very lucky to have joined a business in an industry she enjoys, and she acknowledges that at every stage of her life, she’s realized a different set of lifestyle benefits from running a family-owned business. For example, as a mother of three young children, she has a flexible work schedule. Tricia attributes her success as an entrepreneur to a high energy level, circular thinking, and being able to effectively communicate the genuine excitement she feels about the products and services her family’s business provides. In fact, she considers her

Communications. She worked full-time and went to school at nights and on weekends, graduating at age 29. She says all the jobs she held throughout college gave her the experiences she needed to run her own business today. She also credits the Congregation of St. Joseph with influencing how she operates her business. Their teachings of justice, compassion and doing what’s right always come back to her when she finds herself at a crossroad. Nancy believes when you make the commitment to start your own business, you should do it for the right reasons—because you believe what you bring to the table will make a difference and because what you do

will bring you satisfaction. When you are a business owner, your responsibilities and life experiences become farther-reaching, and the rewards you reap can be greater. All of the people who have come in and out of her life have helped her grow personally. She points out that while every experience was not good, each still helped shape the person she has become. And she considers herself very fortunate to be in a position now to be generous with her family, friends and causes as well as with sharing her knowledge. Nancy has been married 20 years to Doug Charney. She likes to travel and last spring she and her husband traveled with SJA students to China. She currently serves on the board of directors at the Academy.

most rewarding professional accomplishment taking the “small” out of marketing the company and, as a result, successfully competing on a national level with corporations much larger than Norton Industries without losing the small, friendly touch the company’s customer service and sales staff exhibit. As a business owner, Tricia has this advice for those interested in striking out on their own: be committed and be prepared to work hard. She says there’s a lot of joy in success, but on the flip side, when you run your own business, in your mind, you never really “close.” She mandates having a business plan and sticking to it—but, at the same time, always keep planning. She says you must manage in a way that allows your business to grow but also keeps you focused on your company’s mission. She’s also found from personal experience that being an optimist helps you learn from your mistakes and keeps you from getting discouraged. Tricia gives a lot of credit to Saint Joseph Academy for influencing her entrepreneurial life. She says that her alma mater not only prepares students for their next step in education, but promotes leadership and teamwork. Additionally, with the diverse student body at the Academy, students learn respect for others. She calls her experience at the Academy life changing. The friendships she made during those years are at the top of her list of favorite high school memories, and she recalls the daily lunch time cafeteria meetings as treasured times with lots of laughter. She believes the Academy’s leadership did a great job at choosing teachers who enjoyed teaching which made it fun to learn. She remembers former principal Sr. Judy Cauley with particular fondness, citing her unique ability to lead with gentle firmness, her perpetual smile and her ability to relate to students on their level as admirable, endearing qualities. According to Tricia, the respect that students had for Sr. Judy came from that approachability more so than from her title. Tricia and Alan live in Bay Village with their three children: Jack, 4; Brooke, 2; and Katie, born in October 2008. When not enjoying their time running Norton Industries together—a dynamic that Tricia says is truly energizing—they enjoy every second of their family time. Saint Joseph Academy UPDATE
