PREFACE Branding is a mark of trust, a warrant, and a promise. Although developed for the commercial sector for creating differences in products and make ways through competitions, branding in academic Institutions is extremely important to create and define a strong identity and improve landmark qualities in them. This exercise began as an academic assignment coursework for the students of Urban Design in the second semester of Masters in City Planning session 2017-18, and was further developed into a fullfledged, two day workshop with a collective participation of 16 students comprising of postgraduates and undergraduates of the Architecture and Regional planning department of IIT Kharagpur. The workshop entailed creating two distinct groups: the physical domain group who would look after improving the physical aspects of the institution through effective urban design interventions; and the digital domain group who shall focus on developing digital applications and portals for the inmates of the campus and outside. The physical domain group was further subdivided into: macro features which shall include the overall campus interventions, and the micro features which shall be covering the micro level interventions. This compiled report out of the efforts in the workshop, is intended as a first step towards the branding of our institute, IIT Kharagpur and it is hoped that it shall further lead to deliberations and discussions helping to develop an effective result in the near future.

MAPPING THE ATTRACTION POTENTIAL WITHIN CAMPUS Mapping the current areas and zones of attraction, we discover that there is an unequal distribution of such areas. Secondly, one , may also infer that the attraction zones are mainly on one of longer stretches of the Scholar’s Avenue. The campus currently lacks a well defined hangout zone for resident students, and the students visiting the campus. The hangouts are currently either eateries, which are available for only a certain time period; or there are these vestigial spaces, with no defined use and absence of amenities. During exam days, students spend their time in Central Library for discussion and studies. There is no space in campus to hang out for them such that they have access to light, electricity for CURRENT HANG-OUT ZONES IN CAMPUS charging their laptops or equipments, public amenities, etc. In other days, they do not have any space Eateries at all.

Reclaimed Spaces

Considering the above two factors, there is a need for an activity zone, or simply a defined hangout zone in the land between the Sister Nivedita Hall and the Jnan Ghosh Stadium. This will act a counter magnet to the existing attractors. N

33

THE ‘ADDA’

Presently, to reach Cafe Coffee Day, Mother Teresa Hall and Sister Nivedita Hall residents have to travel either through the Pepsi Road or the Main road, which is lengthy and at night is not preferred venture. Therefore, a new pedestrian connection can be introduced between the Cafe Coffee Day, Mother Teresa Hall and Sister Nivedita Hall. This will connect the two arms of Scholar’s Avenue in a better manner.

EXISTING PREFERABLE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THE CCD AND SNVH

Secondly, to activate the area recognised for future potential earlier, a hang out zone can be proposed in the that area- ‘Adda’. Currently, the space is characterised by green grass that gets overgrown in a few months and needs to cut at regular intervals. Making that space lively will provide a place for people to spend time and save the effort and money spent on grass cutting.

The Adda is envisioned as a space that is carved out of the ground, about 2 meters below the surface, such that the low lying character and the skyline framed from this area does not get hampered. It will be space with public amenities such toilets, eateries, kiosks, the info kiosks, etc., wi-fi, electric outlets, lamp posts, seating (both movable and fixed), etc.

TECH MARKET REJUVENATION- EXISTING STATE Tech market being one of the happening places for shopping and hanging out in this institute needs an intervention having been very poorly managed and utilized. The issues that were thought for the intervention are as follows: • The improper or misuses of the open spaces inside, creating a few semi-formal or informal shops • The eateries don’t have a proper seating places for the people • Not enough parking spaces during the peak time in the evening • The shops facing Radhakanta side don’t attract much of customers NO SEATING AREA FOR EATERY SHOPS

TECH MARKET REJUVENATION- INTERVENTIONS To provide a place for the market where not only transaction of goods happens, but also become a place of hanging out that can have a sense of belonging. We consider a thorough redevelopment of the Market building. • To create more enclosed built form by making it two storied • Redesigning the courtyard with some sustainable and smart technologies • “Ultachhata” can provide an opportunity for ground water recharge. • Use of light poles with solar panels will be sustainable solution • The design of the vegetables and perishable items’ market was made with much structural and builtform openness to make more user attractive

A portable and partially deployable prototype is designed for the café. The ply cladding over the steel structure ensures that the kiosk is portable. The canopy and steps can be folded back into the structure when the kiosk needs to be closed. The benches too can be folded and inserted in the metal mesh store at the back, which can be locked. The mesh is used as an interactive wall – with activities like leaving messages, tying ribbons for a cause, etc. Planters grown in used plastic bottles can be attached to the mesh. A digital panel at the side shows the map of the campus and aides in navigation.

DIGITAL BRANDING

Digital branding of the institution to the outside world is a challenging process. We had divided the whole branding process into two different categories. The categories were based on the target groups, one group were the people who stay inside the campus and the other group of people were the ones who come to the college for various purposes. The people who stay in the campus could have customized app for themselves for various purposes. The people who come from outside i.e. the outsiders would require an app that would guide them to the various facilities inside the campus as well as connecting to the events happening in the campus.

INTERACTIVE SCREEN

An interactive screen is a computer driven device, allowing user to access and manipulate electronic files by means of LCD display. The interactive screen will be connected to a computer. Interactive screen help to guide the people with various features associated with it. These include news feed, upcoming/past events, navigation, and others. It helps in adding a helping hand or guide to the new visitors. People love seeing, interacting, touching and experiencing things. We are more likely to be drawn to something interactive than to something static. We like being pulled into an experience and being part of something instead of having to read something static. Advantage of interactive screen: • Attention Grabbing – The design is usually well thought about and eye-catching. They tend to have a WOW-effect to visitors. • Visitors Engagement - Interactive retail displays have an enormous impact on visitor’s engagement. Engaging your visitors creates more confidence and loyalty towards oneself. This interaction makes the visitors more likely to remember the things they see. • They Educate - Clever integration of video and touch screens help interactive displays to educate visitors. Advise them about the events and news going throughout the campus. • They are Flexible - Interactive displays don't just offer interactivity to visitors but to the institute as well. Often these kind of display solutions are also fitted with high quality touch screens. They give institute the option to change the screen's content whenever they want into whatever they want.

KNOW KGP & MY KGP Know KGP KGP is designed to act as a window, to the outside world, of the events, conferences and happenings at IIT KGP. It is a platform to showcase current and upcoming research works, collaborations amongst departments, universities and other organizations. This up to date and easy access to research works will not only improve transparency in the system but also articulately present all the research being carried out here. It will also facilitate access for potential funders for various projects like the government agencies, alumnus and well-wisher of science and technology.

my KGP The internal information needs to be further segregated and presented in an easy access manner as per demands of various user groups which range from: • Residents: comprising of Professors, Administrative Staff, Technical Staff, etc. • Students: Bachelors, Masters, PhD and a further department wise breakdown which can be accessed by roll number. • Guests: such as Alumni, Parents of students, Guests of IIT. My KGP is a day to day activity and utility app that provides common ground for hall and department activities, student teacher interaction, grievances and feedback, etc. It further provides information about a variety of issues ranging from Schedule of Doctors in B. The app follows a simplistic approach where the focus lies on accessing maximum information in least time consuming manner. It follows the standard colour scheme of blue, black and white as per IIT KGP branding along with a tinge of yellow. The cover page opens with a minimalistic line drawing of IIT’s iconic main building which then shrinks to the top in a bubble and a series of cogs on a wire is lowered down which become the various links. The cogs are taken from the outer profile of the main logo of IIT KGP to maintain a synchronicity in design. The blue bubbles are fluidic in character almost dropping off while the cogs give strength to the whole structure while at the same time maintaining the lightness in aesthetics. KGP GO

One of the many utility Apps is KGP GO, which is developed as a navigation and way-finding app for the campus. It goes a step forward than generic way-finding to build a large database of “sets of probable information. For example, users can ask for toilets or ATMs, it directs them to the nearest and also point out all the locations of the facility. The navigation interface is a 3d model of the campus, which enhances the imagability as users will be able to correlate and recognize buildings and places from map to real life by identifying with certain architectural features. Though for giving directions it will function as a 2d map with detailed focus on directing towards pedestrian paths, bicycle lane or main roads as per the bifurcations on the roads in the campus. The app will be of assistance especially during period of new admission to the campus and during various fests and events. It will help determine the mode required for reaching different destinations also direct to bike renting stations or rickshaw points. During event it can double up as an event manager and lead participants and spectators to exact rooms or halls within buildings where certain events are being held.
