Thinking Kid-Sized in the Kitchen

By Abigail Owen I’m constantly on the lookout for little ways to give my kids opportunities to do for themselves. So early one Saturday morning, I tried telling my 4 year-old that he could pour his own cereal. I had shown him how first, but after a couple incidents of spilt milk, half the cereal box being dumped in his bowl, broken bowls and cereal explosions in my kitchen, I decided that maybe a different solution was needed.

I found that with just a few easy, organizational tricks, you can help your kiddos become more independent in the kitchen—and bonus—they may even let you sleep in a little longer!

All you have to do is think kid-sized. Put things on their level. Make items easy for them to get out, open, close, pour and put away. And make sure they have access to non-breakable dishes. The tips below are related to easy independent kid breakfasts. However, they can also be applied to snacks and lunches.

Breakfast Helpers: • Reachable Bowls/Cups/Utensils Place kids’ plastic bowls, cups and utensils in a bin or cabinet that is at kid-level. I find that bins inside cabinets help keep the bowls from ALL being pulled out and left on the floor as they hunt for a specific one. The bin makes it easier for them to slide out and “dig.”

• Easy Open/Pour Cereal Get some plastic cereal bins. Choose ones that your kids can easily open (some of the snaps are not the most kid-friendly). These are also great because you can pour Costco-sized amounts into them. Another option is to go with single-portion cereal boxes (excellent for sleepovers as well), though you’ll spend more on cereal going this route.

• Smaller Milk If you’re like us, you go through a lot of milk on a weekly basis. So I’m not saying to buy a ton of half gallon or quart milk cartons. Instead, pour some milk in a smaller plastic container that is easy for your kids to lift and open. Place it on a shelf that is within their reach and make sure it’s at the front so they don’t have to move items to get to it.

• Pre-measured Servings Invest in a set of cup-sized containers (I’m a big fan of Fit Fresh, http://shop.fitfresh.com). You can use Ziploc bags too, but they don’t stack as well. Place various healthy choices in these (some good options are hard-boiled eggs or cut fruit). This is also useful for grabbing healthy snacks on the go.

• Kid Bin in the Refrigerator Reserve one of your crisper bins in your refrigerator as a “kid bin.” You can put the single-sized servings from the previous tip in there. You can also put any prepackaged items like yogurt, cheese sticks, jello, etc. in their bin. That way they know exactly where in the fridge to look for their food. You can also have a kid bin in your pantry for non-refrigerated snacks and food.

My kids love that they get to select and serve their own breakfast. It makes them feel independent and trusted and helps them develop life skills. Meanwhile, I get a little more time to sleep in knowing that I won’t wake up to a kitchen disaster!

Think Outside the (Toy) Box: 11 Creative, Non-Toy Gifts for Kids

By Alyssa Chirco If you are tired of spending your hard-earned money on presents that get played with briefly and then tossed aside, keep in mind that toys are not the only type of gift that will surprise and delight children of all ages. When doing your party or holiday gift shopping this year, try thinking outside the proverbial toy box.

1. A Membership.

When you invest in season passes or annual memberships, your kids get to visit

the places they love all year-long. Choose from favorite local destinations like zoos, wildlife centers, amusement parks, water parks and children’s museums.

2. An Experience.

Why not give a gift certificate or voucher for an experience or activity your child

would enjoy? Consider options like bowling, ice skating, horseback riding or indoor rock climbing. Or fill a bucket with tokens from a nearby arcade and plan a day to go play.

3. A Subscription.

Popular children’s magazines like Highlights and Cricket help build literacy skills–and

they also encourage kids to read for fun. Give your child one copy for Christmas, and then watch his eyes light up each time a new issue arrives in the mail or becomes available for download.

Tickets to a sporting event like a basketball, baseball or football game make a great gift for

5. Lessons.

From weekly dance or karate lessons to a special, parent-child cooking class, kids love the

Caring For Aging Parents

By Nora Heston Tarte As parents, caring for a young brood is an oft-overwhelming endeavor on its own. When your aging parents go from helpful childcare assistants to adults who need your care, everything changes. Lucky for Sacramento parents, there are a slew of helpful resources available to assist them in navigating the murky waters of simultaneously caring for both their children and their parents.

Just as the local La Leche league or mother’s club carried you during your first adventures in parenthood, a local support group can offer the help you need in your new situation.

Whether it’s simply talking to another person who has been in your shoes, or finding someone to help you locate facilities and resources you can trust, there are several places to start. Some (such as Del Oro Caregiver Resource Center) offer broad resources, while others (the Alzheimer’s Association, Alzheimer’s Aid Society and Parkinson’s Association), offer more specialized support.

While many people go through this—and you are certainly not alone—no two situations are identical. That’s one of the reasons there are so many local organizations that work to benefit senior care. Gerontologist and Aging Life Care™ Specialist Diane Houlton says proactive planning can help you achieve peace of mind. Everyone gets older and there are a slew of issues that go hand in hand with aging. For many, maintaining independence and staying out of a care facility is the goal, a goal that is within reach if you follow these necessary to-dos.

Adults that have chronic conditions need to manage them. Making this a primary focus can help stave off more serious medical issues down the road. Staying healthy is one of the surest ways to put off a transition to a care facility. One of the first steps a child can take, with their parent’s permission, is getting involved with their medical appointments and prescriptions. Medication management is a complex task since older adults average 6 to10 prescriptions each, so ensuring all medications are taken routinely is imperative. As is, staying on top of doctor’s appointments and following up on pain.

This, however, brings us to our next challenge. Getting your parents to frequent doctor’s appointments can be time consuming, especially when you’re shuttling your own kids to and from soccer practice. Both Seniors First (which serves Placer County) and the Asian Community Center (which serves Sacramento and western Placer County) offer transportation services for seniors. If grocery shopping is of concern, both organizations also have meal delivery programs. The latter runs Meals on Wheels.

While technology may bewilder many older individuals, it can also help them keep their independence. “Passive monitoring systems are inexpensive and can reduce in-home care hours until more assistance is necessary,” Houlton says. Consider buying your elderly parent a Life Alert Emergency Response System or similar device to keep them self-sufficient.

For the elderly, a fall can cause irreparable damage. Outfitting a home with proper safety equipment should be at the top of your list for aging adults living on their own.

Approximately one-third of the elderly population over the age of 65 falls each year, according to LearnNotToFall.com. “A home safety assessment is one of the first steps in (Continued on page 60)

assessment and care planning,” Houlton says. If you need to complete minor repairs or additions to your parent’s home to make it a safer environment, contact the nonprofit Rebuilding Together, which installs safety modifications such as grab bars and ramps as well as completes minor repairs for low-income seniors.

Financial security is another concern. “The elderly are frequent targets of financial scams and abuse,” Houlton explains. “Adults have the right to make their own mistakes but steps can be taken to minimize risk of financial exploitation.” For example, if your aging parent has a condition that affects their memory or reasoning skills, it may be necessary to designate a Power of Attorney, whether it is yourself or someone else. This person will be able to make financial, and other life decisions, on behalf of your parent.

Most importantly, however, remember to take care of yourself. The stress of caring for your children and parents puts adults at greater risk of stress-related illnesses. Utilizing local resources can help you pare back on your own responsibilities—so can asking other family members to help.

Sensory Kids: The Top 10 Gifts to Get Them

Gifts can be tricky for kids like my son Dylan. Sure, they like all the same things that other kids do but when their world already seems overwhelming, a calming sensory-activity based toy is really what they crave. Think simple. Check out these top 10 gifts for your sensory seeking child.

1. Water Beads. These things are amazing. They start out as tiny little beads (about the size of a tip of a pen) but when you soak them in water for 4 to 6 hours, they expand to marble-looking bubbles. This will probably be one of your child’s favorite gifts because it is so unique.

2. Rice bucket with small toys. Just go to the dollar store and pick up a cheap shoe box container. Grab a (big) bag of rice and a few trinket-like toys. Dump the bag of rice in the shoebox container and hide the toys in the rice. This activity will keep your child busy for a long time.

3. LEGO lunchbox. This one is awesome. Do you have any old-school lunch boxes lying around? The tin ones that your kids like to play with? Take a LEGO base, score it to fit the inside lid of the lunchbox. Superglue this down. Add a few LEGO pieces inside the box.

Voila! Your child now has their very own LEGO lunchbox to play with at home or on-the-go.

4. Moon Sand. Hands-down one of the best sensory-based activities you will ever come across. Moon sand can be bought pretty much anywhere. All major retailers carry it so plan on spending around $10 to $20 for a nice-sized kit. Moon sand is similar to playdough but it feels like sand.

When you pick it up with your hand, it falls through your fingers just like sand does but without the mess. This is also great for hiding toys in.

5. Playdough. A family favorite. Children with Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) like the way playdough feels because it is relaxing. The feeling of squishing something and molding something into whatever your imagination will come up with is such a soothing activity for really anyone but, especially those who have a hard time processing things around them.

6. Stress ball. A simple stress ball is great for children with anxiety. This is also an ideal ‘tool’ to have in your child’s classroom.

His teacher can store it in her desk and when she sees that your child is starting to feel overwhelmed, stressed or fidgety, she can give him the stress ball. This is a great way to get the child to refocus their attention without making a big deal about it in front of the rest of the class.

7. Balloons. This was one I had never thought of before but my son’s occupational therapist used it in one of his sessions. Buy a bag of regular old balloons. Blow them up.

Let your child toss it in the air, swat it around and watch his face light up with a smile.

Better yet, join in on the fun and take turns hitting it back and forth with each other.

8. Gum, lollipops and Tic-Tacs. These would make great Christmas stocking stuffers. They are small, practical pieces of candy that help with oral stimulation.

I use these all the time with my son when he is having a hard time focusing.

Whether it be him being hyper, moody or a little bit of both, he knows he can go to the pantry in our home and take one of these items whenever he needs to.

9. Electric toothbrush. There are so many cool toothbrushes out there for kids now. Chances are, your child has already showed you (and begged) for that new Barbie or Superman toothbrush. Use this as an opportunity to teach them about the right way to brush their teeth and invest in a quality, electric toothbrush. These are great for making sure your child is brushing their teeth for the suggested two minutes and the vibrating of the toothbrush head helps children actually feel the process of what they are doing.

10. Seamless socks and tag-less shirts and pants. Clothes can feel like the end-all beall for children with SPD and most families steer clear of asking friends and family to buy clothes for their child because what feels good one day for your child, doesn’t always feel good the next day. But, chances are, your child’s wardrobe consists of primarily seamless and tag-less items. Under Armor is a great brand because there are no tags on their clothes. Seamless socks can be found online and look for elastic-free pants so that your child doesn’t have to worry about getting their pants to ‘feel right.’

You and your child’s daily lives are probably stressful enough. Make things as easy as possible on yourself this year and use this article as your go-to shopping checklist.

Hundreds of colorful marchers dressed in green, along with Irish and Highland dancers, pipe and drum bands, historic re-enactors and a variety of cultural organizations, will all join together to be a part of the 20th Annual St. Patrick’s Day parade.
