Introduction Hi everyone It’s been a manic month for S40 Local, we went to Holland for two weeks - I was green with envy about the cycling culture out there, everywhere you go old and young are pottering about doing local trips on their bikes. Obviously, it’s flatter than here - but there aren’t that many hills in Chesterfield and the weather in Holland is as rainy as it is here (believe me, we hardly saw the sun for two weeks!), but people just get on with it. I loved it! So as well as going away for two weeks, we decided it would be a good idea to do a Christmas gift guide to try and give you some inspiration for Christmas presents - so I‘ve been chasing round trying to get that done. I’ve been working manically with all sorts of excellent local businesses - if you take a look through the magazine there are loads of new people, so check out what they’re doing. In the Christmas bit we’re trying to give you ideas for spending your Christmas budget closer to home, where possible - wouldn’t it be great if you could do all your preparation without one trip to Meadowhall in December (let us know if you manage it!) and our local businesses had their best Christmas ever!

There’s loads of other new stuff happening in the area, one thing that’s particularly exciting to me has to be our friends at Brampton Brewery having their own licence premises at the “Rose and Crown”. The Derbyshire Excellence in the Community Awards is an initiative set up by Derbyshire County Council (DCC) to recognise outstanding work and extraordinary achievement by individuals, groups and communities. DCC recognise that there are many adults, businesses, voluntary and charitable organisations throughout the county Janet & PC David Randell whose selfless work is helping to improve our communities and the lives of local people. Janet Ayres was nominated under the Safer Derbyshire category. Here DCC are looking for individuals, businesses, voluntary and community groups who have made a significant contribution to making our communities safer.
is a big passion for Janet and she is busy helping the church build links with the local shopkeepers, residents and agencies, including the police. Extra volunteers are Litter Picks in Walton always welcome, especially for the local litterpicks. Janet was nominated by Marsha Mann from the Chesterfield Community Safety Partnership (CCSP) for her work to make Walton a safer place to live. Janet has liaised with the CCSP as they promote the SmartWater scheme locally, and worked in partnership with the police to organise locations for the mobile police unit to visit. She works with local partners, her church (Walton Evangelical Church) and residents to organise litter picks in the area and also helps to arrange positive activities for young people during holidays, which have included Ozbox and dance mats. In the summer Janet helped organise a big community event on Queen’s Park, linking up with other churches and local organisations, including the Chesterfield South Safer Neighbourhood Team. Janet grew up on the Walton estate and has been attending Walton Evangelical Church for the last 17 years where she now works as their Administrator. Community involvement
Safer Neighbourhoods News PC David Randell’s update on the Safer Neighbourhoods Team (SNT). “We’ve identified the offenders responsible for Graffiti in Somersall Park, and the Police along with their local partnerships using Restoritive Justice have been able to ensure those responsible give something back to the community, make good the damage caused and learn from their mistakes. We also rana further Smartwater initative took place on Monday the 12th October 2009 in conjuction with the community Safety Partnership in the Brampton and Ashgate area. October School half term activities were hosted by the Walton Evangelical Church these included Sporting Futures and Gamezone. “

Community: Somersall United Under 18s We recently received a press release from Simon Newbold of Brookside who manages Somersall United. Chesterfield FC star Jamie Lowry celebrated with recently formed team Somersall United Under 18s as they lined-up in their new kit sponsored by local solicitors GRAYSONS. Graysons have for many years been involved in local football sponsoring not only Chesterfield FC but also local youth teams of boys and girls.
