Editorial

To be honest, this month has been less than ideal, and this editorial shouldn't even be by myself but instead by Zebedee. Sometimes you get those months where they fly by, there are never enough hours in the day, and just too many things to do! Please accept my apologies for a smaller eZine than usual, but I'd like to thank everyone that did contribute, chip in, help out, and all the people that have said to me that they're willing to do what they can. If anything, I hope everyone takes some time to read the birthdays and shout outs, and that you all have a great Easter no matter what you are or are not doing! Oh, and for those that get to have/do things after lent - enjoy! Rachael, x (Puppet Strings)

Butterflies It was Flo and Ben’s first night in together and Flo was anxious. Would they sleep together? Wouldn’t they? She didn’t know, but she knew she had to look her best incase they did. She’d gone dress hunting a few days before their night in and found a red summer dress that she intended to wear. It frilled out a bit at the bottom but she worried that it would make her look huge. In spite of this she knew Ben would like it seeing as red is his favourite colour. She wanted things to be perfect as they hadn’t slept together yet because of how much they liked each other, so they decided they would wait for the perfect moment. They weren’t virgins but they didn’t want to regret anything as they had done with their ex’s. Flo thought it was so romantic and decided she needed to get herself a bath and get ready in time for when Ben arrived. Ben was a chef in a top restaurant and had offered to cook them a surprise dinner. Flo hadn’t been so excited since her prom in year eleven at school. **** Flo had come back from her bath smelling of strawberries and cream and she sniffed her arms as she made her way out to her bedroom. She decided to put some music on. It was Young Hearts Run Free by Candi Stanton. She danced around the room singing along to the words as she got all the things she needed from around her room. Suddenly the underwear draw was staring at her in the face. She didn’t know what kind of underwear to wear. It was a Bridget Jones style situation. She held a pair of underwear in front of her. Big black ones that women only like to wear when they’re having a lazy day in the house. Then she held up a very sexy looking red thong. “Sexy?” She read out as she raised her brow at the red thong. She put the black underwear away and decided that wearing the thong would be ideal for tonight. She began to get ready and by the time she had finished she loved the way she looked for the night. She couldn’t wait for Ben to arrive. She checked the time to see if Ben was due soon. It was 5pm so she’d got ready a bit early, but seeing as Ben wasn’t getting there until 6pm she decided to keep herself occupied until he turned up.

**** It was 5.45pm and Flo was watching television and reading a magazine before Ben arrived, when all of a sudden there was a knock at the door. She turned the television off and threw the magazine under the bed. She quickly lit some vanilla candles and made her way over to the door. She straightened down her dress and smoothed down her hair and opened the door to see Ben standing there with shopping bags. He was wearing a pair of light coloured jeans, light coloured green shirt, his brown leather jacket and his black sneakers. His hair was spiked up, as usual. “Wow! You look amazing!” Ben said as he smiled, showing his dimples as he looked up and down at Flo. “You don’t look too bad yourself, apart from the shopping bags. Very bad accessories I must say.” Giggled Flo as she gave Ben a kiss and let him come in. But as soon as Flo shut the door one kiss lead to another and before she knew it Ben had dropped the bags of shopping had now moved his hands to cup Flo’s face. “What about the food?” Whispered Flo as she started to feel soft kisses on her neck. “**** the food!” He replied as he picked her up and carried her to her bedroom. The door slammed behind them both and Flo’s butterflies fluttered away. By Nat/Field Of Paper Flowers

Music Review The Horrors A few weeks ago there was a countdown on The Horrors website. A lot of fans were thinking it was going to be album details. At the end of the countdown, a video appeared. The video was over 7 minutes long and is FINALLY their new song, Sea Within A Sea. As a massive fan of The Horrors, I can safely say that this single is amazing. It sounds nothing like the debut album, Strange House. If the new album, Primary Colours sounds like the lead single, then I see no reason as to why those who ignored The Horrors back in 2006 will no longer be foolish and ignore them. You'd think that 7 minutes is a long time for one song, but Sea Within A Sea just builds and builds. 4 minutes in and it becomes this epic dare I say it (oh I will) masterpiece. I've been playing it constantly. Faris didn't sing that much with their earlier material, but he has proved that he can. 2009 seems to be a good year for music- whether it is bands returning or last year's unsigned finally getting somewhere. Hopefully Primary Colours will be one of the albums of this year. YouTube - The Horrors - Sea Within A Sea [HQ]

The Enemy The other week I walked past Andy from the band in Leamington Spa. I debated whether or not I should follow him. But I thought, I'm 22 not 12..so I carried on. I've seen the band 4 times and every time, they just get better. Tom Clarke is an astounding frontman with confidence that some may see as arrogance- it's really not. Their lyrics are honest and powerful. They reflect on the every day lives of ordinary people. The new album (Music For The People) comes out at the end of April, and they've said it's a bit more raw than the debut, We'll Live And Die In These Towns. Going by the lead single, No Time For Tears- I'd have to agree. Their gigs are quite brutal (not really in a bad way to be honest) but it's really beautiful to see a few thousand huddled together in the Ricoh Arena in Coventry sing-a-long to songs like This Song and We'll Live And Die In These

Towns. It's been said many times that homecrowds are the best, and they're bloody right. YouTube - The Enemy - No Time For Tears (OFFICIAL VIDEO)

Billie Holiday- Strange Fruit I'm not going to write too much about this poem turned song. Strange Fruit is about the lynching of two black men from the South Of America in 1930. The poem if you read it, is graphic but if you listen to Billie Holiday sing it- it becomes something that's quite difficult to describe. You can hear the pain and disgust in her voice, it's easily one of the most heartbreaking songs ever recorded. There have been covers of this song, but nobody sings it like Billie Holiday does. If it doesn't get to you in any way, then you're made of stone. I can't listen to it all because it just gets to me. It's beautiful yet horrific at the same time. Book Review The Butterfly House - Marcia Preston

I was fifteen when my mother finally told me the truth about my father. She didn’t mean to. She meant to keep it a secret forever. If she’d succeeded, it might have saved us all. Roberta and Cynthia are destined to be best friends forever. When both your fathers are missing you have a lot in common. Unable to cope with her alcoholic mother, Roberta finds Cynthia’s house the perfect carefree refuge. Cynthia’s mother keeps beautiful rare butterflies in her sun porch and she’s everything Roberta wishes her own mother could be. But just like the delicate creatures they nurture, the women are living in a hothouse. Years later, a hauntingly familiar stranger knocks on Roberta Dutreau’s door, forcing her to begin a journey back to childhood. But is she ready to know the truth about what happened to her, her best friend Cynthia and their mothers that tragic night ten years ago? ----This is another of my favourite books. It shows the kind of secrets and

pain that can be hidden behind the happiest of masks. Author, Marcia Preston, describes is as, ‘…a story about mother-daughter relationships, and about the way teenage girls search for who they are and sometimes find the wrong answers. But most of all, it’s a story about the power of enduring love and the infinite possibilities we are given for redemption.’ Another book with stories inside of stories that are all pulled together and tied up as the book comes to a close. It also shows the dynamics that can arise in the closest of friendships and the lengths that people will go to to protect the ones that they love regardless of the relationship; along with the attitude that people still have regarding close inter-family relationships. This month in history This month in history April the 1st is April Fools Day which started in the 18th century. The best TV prank was on the BBC news in 1957 about the spaghetti harvest (spaghetti growing on trees) being announced on BBC news.

Following April fools is world autism awareness day on April 2nd.

The end of the tax year happens on April the 5th for the UK, with world health day on the 7th.

Random Facts Superstitions

With friday the 13th appearing twice in a row, heres some facts you didn't know about friday the 13th.         

2009 is seen as an unlucky year, as there will be three friday the 13th's this year. Having three in a year is said to happen once every 11 years. More than 80% of high rise building lack a 13th floor. Many hospitals and hotels regulary dont have a 13th room. Many airports skip the 13th gate. Some airplanes do not have a 13th aisle. Italians have ommited the number 13 from the national lottery Some streets in italy do not have the number 13 as a house number, instead it is 12.5. Many cities do not have a 13th street or avenue. In france, you can hire an extra guest if a dinner party consists of 13 people. They serve as the 14th guest to keep a dinner party from an unlucky fate. It is said with 13 guests one of them will die in the next year. If you have 13 letters in your name, you will have the devils luck. So with friday the 13th covered, lets move on to some other superstitions....

       

On the first day of the month it is lucky to say "White rabbits" three times, before uttering anything else. Seeing an ambulance is very unlucky unless you pinch your nose or hold your breath until you see a black or brown dog. Placing a bed facing north and south brings misfortune. If you say goodbye to a friend on a bridge, you will never see them again. You must hold your breath going past a cemetary or you will breath in the spirits of people who have recently died. The spose who goes to sleep first on thier wedding day will die first. It is unlucky to see your face in the mirrior by candlelight. If you sing before seven, you will cry by eleven.

All wishes on shooting stars will come true. Easter

Now that easters comming up, its time to learn some facts that you didnt know about easter.        

 

  

90 million chocolate bunnies are made each year for easter. The next time easter will be one the 23rd of march will be in the year 2228. The last time it happend was in the year 1913. The egg symbolizes life, and the symbol was adopted by the church in relation to the ressurection of christ. The easter bunny also symbolizes life. The first Easter baskets were made to look like bird's nests. The traditional act of painting eggs is called Pysanka. The custom of giving eggs at Easter time has been traced back to Egyptians, Persians, Gauls, Greeks and Romans, to whom the egg was a symbol of life. In medieval times a festival of egg-throwing was held in church, during which the priest would throw a hard-boiled egg to one of the choir boys. It was then tossed from one choir boy to the next and whoever held the egg when the clock struck 12 was the winner and retained the egg. Easter is now celebrated (in the words of the Book of Common Prayer) on the first Sunday after the full moon which happens on or after March 21, the Spring Equinox. Easter Bonnets are a throw back to the days when the people denied themselves the pleasure of wearing fine angels for the duration of Lent. Some Churches still keep up the old tradition of using evergreens - symbolic of eternal life - embroidered in red on white, or woven in straw, but most now prefer displays of flowers in the spring colours of green, yellow and white. Americans celebrate Easter with a large Easter egg hunt on the White House Lawn. Next to Halloween, Easter holiday paves way for confectionary business to boom. When it comes to eating of chocolate bunnies, it is the ears that are preferred to be eaten first by as many as 76% of people.

Hello and Welcome to the Aprils Moving forward highlights. Spring is certaintly here and with summer on it's way, lots of you are tackeling your SI and ED's. "Great things are not done by impulse, but by a series of small things brought together." Vincent Van Gough Ranger~Fairy has helped with this edition of moving forward by setting us all a project and sharing some suggestions and distractions. Ask yourself these questions:

Write A list of ways to release emotions and which help you and why Reasons you want stop harming. A list of things that have really helped you and A list of quotes and which you like The reasons you self-harm and how your trying to tackle them. Write a list of your achievements Here are some of Ranger~Fairy's distractions and suggestions. Distractions 1. Crying, this one really helps me sometimes, just to let it out. 2. Writing e.g. a journal, I like this one to, but I find when writing a journal if I don’t write when I’m feeling good as well as when things aren’t so good that when I look back on it, it seems a bit depressing. 3. Writing a story 4. Reading/writing poems 5. Reading book you can relate to. 6. Gym 7. Walking out your stresses, this one I find helpful, particularly if I’m angry and walk somewhere calm. 8. Take up a sport e.g. kickboxing 9. Learn to play an instrument 10. Listening to music, I find this one good, sometimes I pick music I can really relate to, it helps put my feelings into words. 11. Photography , I like using it an art sense as in a collage of photos I like or one that put my feelings into photos e.g. A photo of something I like or a photo that’s dark. And Suggestions 1. Take all the support from professionals that you can get, a therapist, a consular even if its charity run or it’s private. If your trust isn’t offering you enough support and help or you’re not happy with what they are offering tell them! If it still doesn’t change their mind, access your local advocate services, they can help get your point across or help you if you decide to complain. A weekly session with someone even if it’s just to get things off your chest can really help. If your NHS trust are still not offering the support/treatment you want/need, (as my trust did) I urge and recommend to look into the private sector, some therapists/ consular work on a sliding scale and can go as low as £10 an hour. Look into your nearest MIND centre they can offer consoling at much reduced rates and some

do therapy at a reduced rate also. I’ve found seeing a professional for therapy can really help you work through issues from the past I.e. Traumatic experiences or grief. 2. When accessing support through a CPN, therapist, psychologist, and consular est. make the most of the sessions as possible - Try your best to open up. -Tell them what YOU want to work on -Tell them what they need to do to help you. -Tell what you have problems with -Tell them when you’re finding things hard, they’re there to help you. - Let your emotions/feelings out when you them. - Make a plan for out of hours when they’re not available, plan crisis situation I.e. Who you can contact, what to do that helps. - Talk about your achievements however small they seem they all add up!

3. These ones you can do alone but it is better if it’s possible to talk it through with a professional or if that’s not possible maybe a friend who you trust. - Set your short term and long term goals, the short ones in particular need to be realistic and they DON’T HAVE TO be related to self-harm. You struggle with depression; your goal for the next few weeks could be to get up and dressed every day, If taking your meds are important for you to stay well and you have problems forgetting to take them, an aim could be to remember by setting alarms or writing notes on the fridge. If you do feel ready to set goals that relate to self-harm, Go for it! Your long terms can be anything from being able to do your dream uni/college course to being able to wear short selves in a public place. Remind yourself of them. You could ask someone you trust to help keep you on track, e.g. Wake you up in the morning to get you out of bed. Write a list of why you think you self-harm, you add to and work on it; slowly try cross each one out, by no-longer making it a reason for exampleIf one of your reasons is- To release an inside pain, i.e. Built up emotions. You could try work on it by slowly looking at other ways of releasing emotions like creativity or talking to someone and learn not to bottle up feelings as it always makes things worse (I know from my own experiences) Warning this can be very triggering at the time, so pick a time you’re feeling safe. 4. Put as many barriers as possible between you and self-harm, this one’s really helpful some you’re struggling to fight the urges. Get rid of all your SI stuff, go to a public place for the day where it’s not possible

for you to do it, ask not to be alone, if you know or think you could do it, as your alone for a period of time plan ahead go out with a friend to do something fun. 5. Rewards and incentives can be helpful for some people but others find it more triggering. For me I find it helpful, it’s more helpful for me when I set the rewards further apart as in make it slightly further away, (Remember what is realistic is different for different people, so bear in mind it does need to achievable or you could be setting yourself up for a fall.) It’s also more effective and helpful to me when the reward I set isn’t something I’d normally do or buy. Memorable rewards like a day in London with someone you care about are much more rewarding and enjoyable than just buying something; it gives me a better and well reversed sense of achievement that I can remember when I look back. 6. Build a general support network of people you trust and you feel helps you, that aren’t professionals. Join clubs, groups, go out to meet people with similar interests, join sports group. Build stronger relationships with the friends and family you have, plan to see them more, talk to them more about you and them, do fun things with them. If you have more support and it helps that isn’t medical professionals it can really help you feel less scared about one day coping without professional support however close or far away that may be. 7. Always remember that recovery can be a slow, long hard process, it won’t happen overnight and can take years. But remind yourself that small steps DO add up, look at the big picture. Slips are part of recovery, you can learn from your mistakes. Things do go up and down, some weeks will be harder than others, but you CAN get there in the end. Keeping at it is the main thing, however many times you fall and however far get on and try again because one day the time you get up will be the last. 8. Notice your achievements, even if don’t set rewards, be proud that your moving forward. Treat yourself? Look back, notice your long-term progress. Be proud that you’re trying, that you want change. Notice the things in life that are better because of recovery. It doesn’t have to be self-harm, it could be that you’ve started a course, that your tackling social fears, or even that your taking all your meds or getting dressed and washed everyday. 9. I find it helpful, that when I’m feeling upset or distressed that I push myself to do something I would normally enjoy, something I would do when I’m happy. Talk to; spend time with people whose company you enjoy. Do the opposite action that you would normally do for the emotion your

feeling. E.g. If you’re feeling sadness and normally you would lay in bed and hide, get up talk to people, listen to uplifting music. NOTE: This is not a way to block emotions; it is a way of changing your emotion but not blocking/ignoring it. Thankyou Ranger~Fairy for sharing that with us. I'd like to congratulate Kel for becoming free of her ED. I'd like to congratulate fresh-mint on a year free from SI. I'd also like to congratulate Lace-me-up-x for a month free and also going swimming. I'd like to finally congratulate Blue_KK for 11months free Wether your an hour, a day, a week,a month or a year free congratulations to everyone for fighting the urges to SI.

If your tackling your ED right now check out the challenge 09 thread and for SI check out the white wednesday thread and if your feeling up to supporting remember the 1 day,2 forums,3 replies, 4 smiles thread And until next time, Be safe, Take Care and Good luck.
