RYE YMCA 2018 SPRING PROGRAM GUIDE

CREATING COMMUNITY

Nationwide Membership Dear Friends, The YMCA has always been a welcoming presence in the communities we serve, opening our doors to members of all ages and walks of life. Through Nationwide Membership, we are now extending that warm welcome to members of other Ys. More importantly, we are giving you the chance to take advantage of YMCAs across the country, free of charge, whenever you want! Nationwide Membership is a new YMCA initiative that allows active, full facility members to work out at other Ys. For example, you may have joined the Rye Y with a family membership but find that the Stamford Y is more convenient to your workplace. No worries! You can now use the Stamford Y while also enjoying family time at the Rye Y as long as you use your home Y at least 50% of the time. Traveling for business or pleasure? Before you leave, go to ymca.net/nationwide-membership, type in the name or zip code of your destination, and find out if there’s a participating YMCA in that location. We’re excited about this new member benefit and hope you are too. For more information about Nationwide Membership and what to expect when you visit another Y, feel free to ask our Member Services staff. Enjoy your visits to other Ys. And when you’re here, we’ll be happy to welcome you home. Sincerely,

Gregg Howells Rye Y Executive Director

We moved here two years ago from the Netherlands and joined the Rye Y in April. I wanted a way for the whole family to be together instead of going to a million places with my kids scattered all around. The kids need time to play and not spend their time sitting in the car going from place to place. They both do an activity on the same day here – one swims and the other plays basketball. Next session they are both going to swim. I think that is so important because it is a lifesaving skill. The best thing about here is that you can just try different things out – one will also take a gymnastics class and the other wants to try karate. I love dancing so the Zumba class is great. I also take kickboxing and exercise in the fitness center. My husband cycles outdoors but will be coming here more as the weather gets colder. We had a nerf birthday party here recently and my kids loved it! We also did Family Nerf night, which was so much fun.

Manon

I love the atmosphere here and the way people help you. I have a back problem and a trainer in the fitness center, Brendan, gave me some advice. It was so helpful to me. And that’s amazing.

PROGRAM REGISTRATION REGISTRATION Glossary of terms ROLLOVER WEEK - (In Person at Member Services Desk Only) Rollover week is for Family and Youth Members currently in a class during the current session. Evaluation forms for swimming classes must accompany the registration form when registering for the next session. (If your child moves up, days and times may have to change.) If your child remains in the same class day and time, your space will be held for you the entire week of Rollover. However, if you have not re-registered during Rollover Week, you will have lost your placement in the class for the next session. Any class offered free is NOT eligible for rollover. This applies to both Family Members and Youth Members. Anyone wishing to re-register for these classes may do so by filling out a lottery form or going online. Please note that Rollover week is not applicable when registering for summer and fall sessions. MEMBER REGISTRATION - Mail in or Online Registration is mail in/drop off or online for all classes. Members' best chance of securing a place in a class is to use online registration (when available). Online registrations begin at 6 am on day of registration. Member online registration requires a current membership at the Rye YMCA. Visit our website at www.ryeymca.org and click on the blue tab that reads “Register Online. Aquatics, ASA and other select programs are not eligible for online registration. See details on page 8. Forms and instructions can be found in the back of this brochure. Additional copies of the registration form are available at the Member Services Desk. Mail in/drop off registrations are processed through a lottery system beginning on the first day of registration at 9 am. Forms may be dropped off or mailed beginning one month in advance of registration dates. An email will be sent to confirm your successful registration. Visit our online registration portal to check the status of your class choice at www.ryeymca.org. NON-MEMBER REGISTRATION Non-Member Registration is for Non-Members of the Y who wish to participate in a specific program or class. This registration is done in person at the Member Services Desk beginning at 7:30 am, or you may use the online registration beginning at 6 am (see page 8) on the specified Non-Member registration dates (page 6). Must register for youth aquatic classes in person only. FAMILY MEMBER FREE CLASSES Of the free classes offered to Family Members, there is a limit of two free classes per family, per session (additional fees will apply if more than two free classes are selected). Because of the popularity of these classes, free classes are not eligible for rollover. At the end of each session, you will be required to re-register for the class through Member Registration. In addition, if your child misses more than two classes in a row without notifying the Y, the child will be dropped from the class.

CHECKING-IN AT THE y Scanning your membership card is important for security and accurate facility usage records, so that we can better serve you. We appreciate your cooperation. STRONG SWIMMERS, CONFIDENT KIDS Many have learned to swim at the Y, but drowning still poses a considerable risk for youth and adults. Swim Lessons Keep People Safe. At the Y, we believe that swimming is a life skill. Because of our reach and long history with aquatic programs, the Y is in a unique position to help bridge the gap in the delivery of swim lessons and water safety education in the United States. Our swim lesson curriculum begins with basic swimming readiness skills and, as results are achieved, progresses to stroke introduction, refinement, and technique. This approach provides students with a solid foundation for refining their swimming skills as they progress through the stages of the program. Emphasizing Water Safety The program includes information and instruction not only in swimming skills and keeping students active and engaged but also in water and personal safety. The importance of asking permission to get into the water is emphasized with parents, students, and instructors at every lesson. Safety topics address issues that affect the day to day lives of students and their families.

88% of children drown under some type of supervision and 60% do so within 10 feet of safety.

• Swim Starters are parent child lessons. Stages include: Discovery and Exploration. • Swim Basics are beginner level classes focusing on recommended skills for all to have around water. Stages include:

Acclimation, Movement, and Stamina.

• Swim Strokes focus on skills to support a healthy lifestyle. Stages include: Introduction, Development and Mechanics. • Pathways are specialized tracks such as competition and leadership.

WATER EXERCISE

FOSTERING CONNECTIONS

AQUATIC GROUP EXERCISE CLASSES (INCLUDED IN MEMBERSHIP) Ages 15 and up WATER STRETCH: In this 30 minute class, participants will relax and release tension throughout the body caused by daily living. Class

is performed in the shallow end of the pool and uses the warmer water to assist the muscles during stretches. Class focus is on stretching muscles, balance, and peace of mind. A series of exercises designed to stretch your muscles and relax your mind.

DEEP END WATER STRETCH: Participants wear deep water exercise belts in a warmer pool to facilitate a series of stretching. We create an opportunity to lengthen, balance and strengthen the spine, muscles, tendons and ligaments. Series begins with gentle physical movement to unwind your body, stretches continue in attempt to release tightness in the hips and low back, neck and shoulders. By working from our foundation, the spine, the end product should improve daily movement. AQUA PUMP: This 45-50 minute class focuses on using the deep water to enhance fitness of all levels. The water provides a natural resistance for your body to move against. Movements in the water increase your level of endurance and cardio strength. Participants will use noodles, barbells, and their own body weight for added resistance to help overall fitness with cardio, strength, and core. WATER AEROBICS: This 50 minute shallow water class combines movements such as jumping, moving your arms, and using a variety of exercises and equipment to improve your fitness. Water resistance is used to develop your muscle tone, flexibility, cardiovascular fitness and general well-being. Concentrating on both upper and lower body, exercises are taught at a quicker pace to burn calories and increase endurance. AQUA ZUMBA: This 45 minute energetic class features rhythmic music and dance moves to enhance fitness. In a fun, energetic environment you will be burning calories and strengthen muscles as you move along to the music!

H20 HIIT: A 45 minute class held in the shallow end, H20 HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) in the pool is a great form of cardiovascular training. HIIT involves brief bursts of very high intensity training followed by a recovery period to bring your heart rate down. Studies have shown that these intense bursts of exercise boost your metabolism and may burn more total calories than steady cardio. DEEP WATER BASICS: This class stresses the basic techniques necessary to effectively utilize the unique properties of the water to get the most from your deep water exercise class. Emphasis will be placed on posture and proper technique for a variety of exercises designed to strengthen and align your skeletal structure, build endurance, and strengthen and enhance your ability to redefine the use of your body for daily living. POWER AQUA FITNESS: Splash your way to a full body workout that emphasizes agility, strength, and endurance. Prepare for quick and powerful movements that will tone your muscles and increase your cardio! A complete head to toe workout that exercises large muscle groups, increases your heart rate and makes your lungs work harder. Member: FREE; Non-Member: N/A aqua exercise personal training:

Aquatic training offers advantages one cannot achieve on dry land, regardless of the participant's condition. I moved here from the city in 1999, when my kids were small. Charlie Clute (former Health & Fitness Director) hired me to teach the Alexander Technique, which we don’t teach here anymore. He then coached me and spurred me on to teach older adult fitness. Ever since then, I’ve been working at The Osborn, and at the Wainwright House teaching the Limbercize class. I’ve taught a lot of fall prevention classes and now I teach Dynamic Balance at The Osborn. I also teach Tai Chi and Enhance Fitness. I think people are becoming more mindful about what they do, so there are a lot more yoga classes than there ever was. But there are also a lot more classes geared towards older adult fitness. The Y is really addressing that niche. And there are a lot of older adults —and not necessarily older adults—who take my Tai Chi class. Again, for more mindfulness as well as balance and staying in shape.

The connections that I make with people here give me satisfaction. I see them three times a week and it’s Group Ex Instructor just a nice family feeling. People know each other and come to exercise and have fun. I love to make people laugh and dance and lighten up a little. I also work out at the Y and I’ve had amazing teachers here. Kaleena was a coach of mine for a long time and I really, really love the Basic Training class that Yvonne and Laura are teaching now. There’s a lot of heart at the Y and that’s why I’m still here. I probably could have gotten jobs in other gyms but I like the sense of community and the friendliness of this place.

FOR COMMUNITY: SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY “Go into the world and do well. But more importantly, go into the world and do good.” -Minor Myers Jr., Author, Scholar, Composer

The YMCA as a movement has done well. Started in London in 1844, the Y has spread to 119 countries across the globe, with more than 2,700 branches in the United States alone. We’ve become widely respected for teaching millions of kids to swim, for our nurturing childcare, for summer camp, and so much more. But just as important, we go into our communities and “do good.” At the Rye Y, we go into schools and teach potentially life-saving water safety skills to young children, free of charge. Through our Togetherhood program, we engage members in community service projects that create ripples of positive change. We welcome everyone who walks through our doors, regardless of age, income, or background, turning no-one away because he or she can’t pay. This spring, we’re excited to be launching another social responsibility initiative called Derby Goes Green. The Rye Derby is a signature event, combining road races for all ages with Healthy Kids Day activities in a fun-filled celebration of family, community and health. Working with local partners, we’re taking steps to make the Rye Derby and Healthy Kids Day more environmentally friendly. You’ll see less waste and more recycling and composting. It’s the right thing to do…for our planet and our children’s future. Social responsibility is the third leg of the YMCA stool, as strong and vital as Youth Development and Healthy Living, though perhaps not as well known. We invite you to learn more about all the ways they Rye Y makes a difference for our neighbors, our communities and in the world.

FOR COMMUNITY: Y CARES "Thank you for allowing my family to belong to the Rye Y family. Your help has provided us with the opportunity to create priceless memories." The Y Cares program allows the Rye YMCA to keep a powerful promise to the communities we serve: no-one will be turned away from Y programs and services because he or she can’t pay. In 2016 alone, the Y awarded over $455,000in financial aid to 354 families and individuals in need. Scholarships allowed children to join their peers at camp, whilemembership subsidies gave individuals and families the full Y experience, often during difficult times. It's easy to support Y Cares. Make a one-time donation online or at Member Services. Or speak to a Member Services staff person about making an ongoing gift through your monthly bank draft.

EMPOWER MORE THAN YOURSELF. When you join the RYE Y, you’re committing to more than simply becoming healthier. You are supporting the values and programs that strengthen your community. At the Y, children learn what they can achieve, families spend quality time together, and we all build relationships that deepen our sense of belonging.

For more than a workout. For a better us.
