CELEBRATING

THE Y IN YOU! RYE YMCA | ANNUAL REPORT 2014

Our MISSION...

The RYE YMCA is a family-oriented community service organization which welcomes all people and promotes positive values through programs that build spirit, mind and body.

AT THE Y, WE STAND FOR: YOUTH DEVELOPMENT We believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. Our goal is to help youth cultivate the values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behavior, better health and educational success.

HEALTHY LIVING In communities across the country, the Y is a leader for health and well-being, bringing families closer together, encouraging good health and fostering connections through fitness, sports, fun and shared interests.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY For over 100 years, the Rye Y has been the hub of community life and a catalyst for positive change. From financial assistance that keeps the Y affordable for people who need our programs most, to the partnerships that foster strong communities, the spirit of social responsibility infuses every aspect of our work.

Dear FRIENDS...

Reaching the ripe old age of 100 is a pretty big deal, whether you’re a senior citizen, a business or a non-profit organization. Last year, the Rye Y celebrated its centennial with special displays, family events and a gala dinner that was truly an affair to remember. And thanks to the hard work of our board of directors and the generosity of our community, we raised nearly $2 million through a Centennial Campaign to ensure our future. Not bad for an organization that started in a room above Guerin’s Drugstore on Purchase Street in Rye and used a local riding stable as a makeshift gymnasium. As wonderful as our centennial year was, we never lost sight of our core mission. Every day, our dedicated staff found new ways to support our members and further our cause-driven work in the communities we serve. Flip through these pages and you’ll see that we were busy throughout 2014 with programs and initiatives that addressed a range of issues: diabetes prevention, pedestrian safety, access to health care, wellness in the faith community, school gardens, stronger families and senior fitness, to name just a few. Last November, one of our youth members observed “the Y is such a great place to learn and is so popular because it’s been around for100 years. So it’s had a lot of time to grow and become great.” Thanks Sam! With all due modesty, we’re proud of the work behind us. But we’re even more excited about the work yet to come. We hope you will join us as we embrace the next 100 years – stronger, bolder and more effective than ever. Sincerely, Gregg Howells Executive Director

Kevin Tice, President Board of Directors

WINTER at the Y

JANUARY – MARCH

RYE YMCA | ANNUAL REPORT 2014 | PAGE 4

Thanks to a grant from Westchester Community Foundation, we hired two bilingual Community Health Workers, one in February and one in July. These part-time staff members are on the ground in Port Chester and Mamaroneck, reaching out to low-income Latino and African-American residents at churches, soup kitchens and senior centers with information about healthy living and chronic disease prevention.

We believe that giving students the opportunity to garden fosters healthy eating and physical activity habits that last a lifetime. In March, 60 teachers, principals and parent volunteers shared information and inspiration at SEEDS TO SCHOOLS, a free half-day workshop on school-based edible gardens organized by the Rye Y and co-sponsored by Jay Heritage Center. The Rye Y brought a SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL workshop to the Port Chester Middle School. Attended by a broad cross section of the community and led by a consultant from Alta Planning + Design, the workshop resulted in the formation of a Safe Routes to School Committee that is exploring ways to make walking safer for students at all Port Chester schools.

Thirty families took to the high seas (a.k.a. Pa Cope pool) in boats of all shapes, sizes and degrees of seaworthiness during the first annual CARDBOARD BOAT REGATTA. While most of the homemade boats (made entirely of cardboard and duct tape) were crewed by kids, a few parents squeezed in with their children in a valiant effort to reach the far end of the pool.

SPRING at the Y

APRIL – JUNE

RYE YMCA | ANNUAL REPORT 2014 | PAGE 6

An estimated 3,300 students walked to schools in Rye, Larchmont, Mamaroneck, Port Chester and Harrison, during Walk to School Weeks in April and October. Part of the Y’s Safe Routes to School initiative, this bi-annual event shows families that walking to school can be a fun, healthy and earth-friendly alternative to driving.

Now a Rye tradition, the 26TH ANNUAL RYE DERBY AND HEALTHY KIDS DAY attracted hundreds of runners, from families with strollers to marathon athletes. In addition to the one-mile Fun Run, and 5-K and 5-mile races through downtown Rye, community members enjoyed a free barbeque, give-aways from event sponsors and activities for the kids.

In May, the Rye Y celebrated older adults at SENIOR FITNESS DAY, held at the Y and Osborn Home in Rye. Approximately 90 seniors enjoyed a healthy lunch and sampled classes such as Zumba, Yoga & Breathing, Enhance Fitness, Tai Chi and more. This annual event was free and open to the public.

The Rye Y teamed up with the Hispanic Resource Center, Open Door Family Medical Centers and other community partners to host the ACCESS TO CARE FAIR IN MAMARONECK. An estimated 200 Sound Shore residents took advantage of free screenings for everything from high blood pressure to breast cancer and left with vital information about health and wellness.

SUMMER at the Y

JULY – SEPTEMBER

RYE YMCA | ANNUAL REPORT 2014 | PAGE 8

Most of them were strangers to each other. Some could barely manage a full lap in the pool or ride a bike. Others were cancer survivors. Yet 56 women ranging in age from 19 to 69 formed unshakable bonds and achieved the unthinkable through the Rye Y’s TRIBE, a training circle for women triathletes. In 2014, the group pulled together to support one of their own: Valerie Romanello who was fighting Stage 4 pancreatic cancer when she and the others competed in the Iron Girl Triathlon in Sandy Hook, NJ in September.

Over 1,200 children and teens learned new skills, made friends and grew in confidence at the RYE Y’S SUMMER CAMP. In addition to the traditional camp experience, the Y offered oneweek sessions for those interested in fine arts and LEGO, gymnastics, sports and adventure trips. In 2014, to stem summer learning loss, we introduced journaling at the Discovery and Gymnastics Camps. Each camper received a journal and time was devoted each day to writing or drawing.

When the Y’S FITNESS CENTER re-opened after our August maintenance period, it sported new flooring, and several pieces of new cardio and strength equipment, all designed to better serve the health and wellness needs of our members.

In September, the Rye Y kicked off FIRST FAMILY FRIDAYS with a Back to School Crafts Night. First Family Fridays bring families with young children together for monthly themed activities at the Y.

FALL at the Y

OCTOBER – DECEMBER RYE YMCA | ANNUAL REPORT 2014 | PAGE 10

In November, more than 55 faith leaders, elected officials, health insurers and representatives from non-profit organizations gathered at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Port Chester to share inspiring stories and presentations on successful practices of faith-based wellness programs. The "Interfaith Wellness Conference" was sponsored by Healthier Port Chester and Healthier Mamaroneck, community coalitions led by the Rye Y.

In October, we held the THIRD ANNUAL LIVESTRONG AT THE YMCA DAY. Over 70 LIVESTRONG at the YMCA alumni and staff gathered for fitness, food and fellowship. This year’s event featured interactive workshops that focused on holistic healing and remarks by Patty Chang Anker, author of “Some Nerve: Lessons Learned While Becoming Brave.” In 2014, 94 cancer survivors found hope and healing through LIVESTRONG at the YMCA.

In October, our HEALTHIER SOUND SHORE COALITION sponsored a panel discussion that gave us a sobering glimpse into the scope and face of hunger in Westchester County, and how we can help. This event was the second panel discussion organized by Healthier Sound Shore in 2014; the first, which focused on the critical issues facing today’s teens, helped mobilize local leaders around teen substance abuse prevention.

Cool, rainy weather didn’t dampen the spirits of nine families who traveled upstate for the 2ND ANNUAL CAMP-OUT AT CAMP GREENKILL, part of the Rye Y’s Adventure Guides program. In 2014, Adventure Guides involved 81 dads (or favorite male role models) and kids in fun activities designed to strengthen family bonds. At Camp Greenkill, dads and their young children paddled on the lake, learned survival skills and toasted marshmallows during one unforgettable weekend.

TOGETHERHOOD In May 2014, the Rye Y launched Togetherhood, a national YMCA social responsibility initiative that involves YMCA members in community service. By year-end, we had formed a Service Committee of seven people and engaged dozens of other members in two projects: painting the walls and stairwells at St. Ignatius School in the Bronx and a children's clothing drive and day of service for The Sharing Shelf in Port Chester. All interested Y members are invited to join Togetherhood and start making a difference today! “The team from the Rye YMCA did more than brighten the walls of this little gem of a school in the Bronx. They brightened the lives of our students through their act of kindness and generosity.” Eavan O’Driscoll, President St. Ignatius Middle School RYE YMCA | ANNUAL REPORT 2014 | PAGE 12

WHAT WOULD A CENTENNIAL YEAR BE WITHOUT CELEBRATION?

We launched our year with a 100-day step challenge and ended with a Gala that topped any party in recent memory. In between, families enjoyed a Harlem Ambassadors basketball game in Mamaroneck and a Scavenger Hunt in downtown Rye. And through a special Centennial Campaign, we raised nearly $2million to ensure that the Rye Y remains a vibrant force for change for the next 100 years.

RYE Y STORY PROJECT In November 2014, Rye Y members and staff shared their personal stories, from the back stories that brought them to the Y to the successes and challenges encountered on the road to healthy living, during the Y’s 3rd Annual “Voices from the Community: The Rye Y Story Project.” Below are excerpts from just a few of the stories collected. To read the full stories, visit www.ryeymca.org/membership. I have been coming to the Rye Y for 26 years. I meet the most fascinating women in the locker room at the Y. Today, I met a woman who teaches dance to people with Parkinson’s and another woman (also a dancer who studied with Twyla Tharp) who is an Endocrinologist at NYU. And that was just another morning at the Y. - Julia Schwartz-Leeper We have been Rye Y members for 22 years. In the beginning we joined for the kids' programs - swimming, gymnastics, Mommy and Me with Ellen Watermelon. The Y taught all four of my kids how to swim and all my girls took gymnastics classes here. Approximately 20 years ago, I started taking step classes at night. The classes were held in the old gym. I remember sneaking in through the roll-up garage door that was located off of the parking lot. We had a lot of laughs in that class; that’s when I realized the Y was a special place for the young, old and somewhere in between! - Nancy Pryor I love swimming and thought it would be good to practice year round to become a better swimmer. My mother suggested the Y. Besides the fun swimming program, I like the game room and the gym. All of the coaches are nice. They are helping me with stroke development. My goal is to go into competition. The people here at the Y make the difference. I come to the Rye Y because everybody here is really good at what they do and they are all friendly. That makes the Rye Y different. Everyone here is very nice. - Jay Biondi

Y CARES

The Y Cares program allows the Rye YMCA to keep a powerful promise to the communities we serve: no-one will be turned away from a Y program or activity because he or she can’t pay. In 2014 alone, we awarded nearly $564,000 in financial aid to 473 families in need. Scholarships allowed children to join their peers at camp, while membership subsidies gave adults, seniors and families the full Y experience, often during difficult times. Thanks to generous support from individuals, businesses and foundations, Y Cares is meeting a critical need in our communities. “I would like to thank all the donors and volunteers involved with the Y Cares Program. It means so much to me to have the chance to re-build my body and mind since my accident a year and a half ago. Now that I am disabled and can’t go back to my job I love, it is great to have somewhere I can go to feel like I have a purpose in life. A place to re-build and have a second chance, to meet people and feel good about myself again. You are all very kind to help make this possible for me again. Thank you!” -David, Y Cares Financial Aid recipient RYE YMCA | ANNUAL REPORT 2014 | PAGE 16
