OUR IMPACT IN 2022

A Snapshot of the Ways We Put Our Mission in Motion COMMUNITY IMPACT 2022

Dear Friends,

After a hiatus of three years, we’re pleased to bring back the Rye Y’s Annual Impact Report. Those years were filled with tremendous challenges, but even greater accomplishments. Through it all, we have been here for our members and our community, running programs, providing child care, collecting food for the hungry, and so much more.

In these pages, we have highlighted a few of the ways the Rye Y made a difference in 2022, both inside and outside our walls. It was an exciting year to say the least! With recovery from the flood and the worst of the pandemic behind us, we forged ahead with a new strategic plan, revitalized and expanded our programming, and opened a beautiful new facility!

We couldn’t have done all of this without a hardworking staff and dedicated board and support from our members, donors and volunteers. It takes all of us to keep our “mission in motion.” Thanks to our collective efforts and our belief in the power of community, the Rye Y is more vibrant and vital than ever!

Thank you, as always, for being part of the Rye Y family.

Sincerely,

8,075+ members

(as of December 31, 2022)

Supporting Children and Families: Early Learning Center

Safe, nurturing, affordable child care is a critical need for working parents and the Rye Y has stepped up. Launched in the fall of 2021, our Early Learning Center provided full-day licensed care for 89 children ages 18 months to five years in 2022.

“My daughter Sienna loves school so much and has learned so many things since joining the class. She is reading and learning to write and most important loves herself, her friends and school! She says affirmations like ‘I am brave’, reads and understand books and takes such good care of her friends. The amazing teachers are the reason!”

– Renee and Danil- ELC parents

Fostering Health and Wellness: The Studios at the Rye YMCA

The Y Studios opened in June and was an immediate hit! Featuring four state-of-the-art fitness studios with brand new equipment, a bright and cheerful child care room for members, and a spacious community room, the Y Studios became the place to go for group exercise, personal training and camaraderie.

Helping Children Thrive: Summer Camp

The Y’s summer camp was back in full post-pandemic swing in 2022. Children ages 3–14 enjoyed fun activities, exciting field trips and skills development in six camps at the Rye Y and Resurrection School.

“I’m so pleased at how much my daughter enjoyed camp. The counselors were amazing and she enjoyed all the field trips. I’m so happy we decided to send her. It made such a difference in her confidence and also challenging herself. Thank you so much for such an amazing summer for her.”

Mentoring Youth: Teaching Core Values

Rye Y staff are proud to model and teach the Y's core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. In 2022, our staff shared these values through bullying prevention workshops with faculty and students at Resurrection School, by running school recess programs in the Rye Neck School District, and by coaching youth in our sports programs.

Providing Access for All: Y Cares Financial Assistance Program

Y Cares allows the Rye YMCA to keep a powerful promise to the communities we serve: no one will be turned away from a Y program or activity because they can’t pay. In 2022, we awarded over $450,000 to 571 families and individuals so everyone could experience all the Y has to offer. Thanks to generous support from individuals, businesses and foundations, Y Cares is meeting a critical need in our communities.

Offering Hope and Healing: LIVESTRONG at the YMCA

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a free, 12-week small group program that helps adult cancer survivors reclaim their health and well-being following a cancer diagnosis. In 2022, 29 survivors grew stronger, became more flexible, and increased their endurance thanks to LIVESTRONG at the YMCA.

“Our group consisted of 5 warriors who all had their own story. We smiled, teared, inspired, motivated, and most of all understood one another. We knew the inner turmoil, scary moments, the pain that we had endured and we united and worked hard towards getting stronger. I appreciate the guidance and support from this program and to our amazing coach…You Rock! Your knowledge, passion, and motivational skills are contagious.”

Preventing Drowning: Safety Around Water

Learning how to be safe around water is one of the most important life skills a child can learn. Our Safety Around Water drowning prevention classes are offered to community organizations free of charge. In June 2022, we once again brought the program to Port Chester families through a partnership with the Carver Center.

"We face constant shortages of nonperishable food items due to the everincreasing demand at our Rye pantry. The generosity shown during the Rye Y's food drives for Bread of Life help us to never turn anyone away hungry. Truly we are better together. Thank you!"

Supporting our Neighbors: Togetherhood

Social responsibility is at the core of everything we do. In 2022, 50 Rye Y members and friends volunteered at six community service projects that tackled hunger and food insecurity and protected natural habitats.

Y CARES

The Y Cares program allows the Rye YMCA to keep a powerful promise to the communities we serve: no one will be turned away from a Y program or activity because he or she can’t pay. In 2022, we awarded over $450,000 to 571 families and individuals that needed a helping hand. Scholarships allowed children to join their peers at camp, while membership subsidies gave adults, seniors and families the full Y experience, often during difficult times. Y Cares also funds such programs as Safety Around Water and LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, both of which are offered free of charge.

Thanks to generous support from individuals, businesses and foundations, Y Cares is meeting a critical need in our communities.

To the Y Cares Donors Who Made My Daughter's Membership Possible

Thanks to you, my daughter is able to participate in Kinder Camp and swim lessons. I am a single mother and I would never have been able to enroll my daughter in the programs had it not been for the Y Cares Program. You have truly helped a 3-year-old!

HONORING THE PEOPLE WHO MADE AN IMPACT

Community Service and Gold Spirit Awards

The Rye Y’s Community Service and Gold Spirit Awards were given to three outstanding volunteers at the Y’s Annual Better Together Benefit on June 3.

Left to right: Sara Goddard, Community Service Award winner; Doug Donohue, Gold Spirit Award winner; Sue Kelly, Gold Spirit Award winner.

Woof Haneman Award

For 24 years, the Woof Haneman/Rye YMCA Scholarship Award has supported the college dreams of exceptional Rye High School seniors. The 2022 winners of this $1,500 scholarship were Kelsey Walsh and Kajol Khatri, shown with Rye Y COO Randal Ikeda and Nancy Haneman, widow of Woof Haneman.

A Fond Farewell to Gregg

Rye Y staff gathered to present Gregg Howells with a token of their gratitude and appreciation days before his retirement in June. A new bench, with a plaque in Gregg’s honor, was installed outside the Rye Y, where it is enjoyed by members wanting to sit in the sun, chat with a friend, or just rest for a bit.

2022 FINANCIAL STATEMENTS

STATEMENT OF ACTIVITIES AND CHANGES IN NET ASSETS

NOTES ABOUT FINANCIAL STATEMENTS

The Rye Y’s finances were greatly impacted by the pandemic in 2020 and the flood of September 2021.

The 2021 Statement of Activities shows one-time government funding of $1,520,200 from a Paycheck Protection Program grant and payroll tax credits. It also shows a net loss of $2,471,200 for rebuilding after the flood.

STATEMENT OF FINANCIAL POSITION

In addition to the physical damage from Hurricane Ida, we lost program and membership revenue while the facility was closed. Although we slowly began to rebound in 2022, we still ended the year with a slight operational deficit. In addition, market conditions resulted in unrealized investment losses, which further increased our book deficit for the year.

In 2022, the Rye Y’s cash on hand decreased due to the buildout of the Y Studios and new child care classrooms. The cash outlays increased our capital assets and we are now seeing extremely positive trends in both membership and programming.
