CREATING CONNECTIONS Dear Friends, We are pleased to share our 2018 Impact Report, a snapshot of our mission in action. With a new, streamlined format, larger photos, and even an interactive page, we’ve tried to show the many ways our members connect – with each other, with our staff and with the community at large. Throughout the year, but especially during the Rye Y Story Project, our members told us how much they value those connections. Emilio shared that his family joined the Y shortly after moving to Rye to make sure his “children felt welcome in the community.” He added “being here was a welcoming experience for us.” Sue told us that by attending “mommy and me” classes with her daughter, she “met a lot of moms who have become very good friends.” And Jeanne said “I come to the Y every morning at 8:30am for aerobics class or spinning – or for any class that is on at that time. Everyone says hello here. The parking guys are amazing, always smiling and being helpful. I feel happy coming here.” This is what makes the Y special for many of our 9,000+ members. You can come for fitness, swim lessons, child care, group exercise classes or Canasta. And through the connections you make, become part of a community. Whether it’s your relationship with a class instructor, the friendly locker room banter, or the friendships your child has made at summer camp, we hope that you too have found ways to connect here at the Rye Y. Sincerely,

Gregg Howells Executive Director

At the Rye Y, we stand for…

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT We believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve.

“My name is Yendy. I was adopted by my mom Janett from Jamaica. I came to the United States in December of 2017. My mom told me about [the] YMCA because my cousin has been attending for the past five years. It was my first time attending a summer camp. I have to say it was quite an experience. When I first started, I was scared, but my counselors were there to help me understand. The Rye Y also helped me with socializing and making new friends. I want to say thank you to all the counselors that helped me to accomplish all my skills. The YMCA also has great swimming lessons. I still can’t believe I’m swimming.” – 13-year-old Rye Y member, Yendy, September 2018

NEW IN 2018:

PRE-SCHOOL ENRICHMENT PROGRAM Launched in September 2018, our Pre-School Enrichment program offers three to five-year-olds a variety of fun activities, including swim lessons, sports instruction, movement, cooking, art, science, gardening and playground time. As one mom remarked “We’re super happy with the program. Jack comes home tired from all the activities and asks to come back the next morning.”

At the Rye Y, we stand for…

HEALTHY LIVING The Rye Y is a leader for health and well-being, bringing families closer together; encouraging good health; and fostering connections through fitness, sports, community service and shared interests.

“I started coming to the Rye Y about two years ago. I was a cancer patient. The chemo and the radiation really wore my body down so someone hooked me up with the LIVESTRONG program here. And it’s the best thing that ever happened to me. I had no balance, everything was bad then. We worked for weeks with a group and nobody had balance so we all learned and we got better and stronger. They showed me a million different ways to exercise – do this, do that, try MELT, and I could pick out what was best for me. It’s a great program.” – Debra, a LIVESTRONG at the YMCA participant

NEW IN 2018:

PICKLEBALL FOR ADULTS! Pickleball is a racquet sport that’s sweeping the nation and now it’s at the Rye Y! In January 2018, we introduced Pickleball to our members through a monthly class for adults. It was such a hit that we now offer a weekly class for beginners. “I love the strategy. I love the action. It’s not overly demanding, but for all ages you get a really, really good cardio workout.” – Sheila, Pickleball class member n

At the Rye Y, we stand for…

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY From the financial assistance that keeps the Y affordable for all, to the initiatives that foster stronger communities, the spirit of social responsibility infuses every aspect of our cause-driven work.

“I was so excited to bring my 4-year-old daughter to International Coastal Cleanup Day. I'm always looking for opportunities to expose her to community service and this was a great chance to do that in a way that was age appropriate, and a lot of fun!” – Togetherhood Committee member Kelly Bourassa with her daughter Penny

NEW IN 2018:

DERBY GOES GREEN Going green makes perfect sense when you consider the Y's three focus areas: youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. In 2018-the Rye Derby's 30th anniversary-we took significant steps to reduce waste, increase recycling and raise environmental awareness at the Rye Derby and Healthy Kids Day. “Derby Goes Green is a wonderful initiative that involves community members in reducing waste and educates participants about the importance of taking care of our planet. As a runner, I'm excited that the Rye Y has set a high standard for environmentally responsible athletic competitions.” – Kerry Linderoth, Director of Sustainability, Rye Country Day School

IN 1948, when the Rye Y was a lot smaller, we started a summer day camp. The first campers enjoyed swimming at Playland and playing kickball, softball and badminton in the field where the parking lot now lies. TODAY, the Rye Y summer camp serves approximately 1,500 children a year, offering seven different camp programs for ages 3-16 at the Rye Y and Osborn Elementary School. Through our Y Cares Financial Assistance program, we make sure that every child who wants to attend camp is able to, regardless of their family’s ability to pay. THE WORLD has changed a lot since 1948, and so has the Rye Y’s summer camp. However, our core values remain the same. As one Y Cares family told us “The Y camp’s emphasis on respect, caring, honesty, and responsibility challenges [our children] daily to grow into caring, honest and responsible people.” n
