RYE YMCA 2016 FALL PROGRAM GUIDE Session 1: September 10 - November 11, 2016 Session 2: November 12, 2016 - January 29, 2017

Welcome to the RYE YMCA! Dear Friends, What makes the Y so special? Many people would say that it’s the warm greeting they receive when they walk in the door. Or the support they’ve found from our trainers and teachers. Others appreciate a sense of community that’s missing from other facilities. As one of our members remarked “I felt like family from day one.” Creating a welcoming environment for our members and guests means a lot to us. Through our hiring practices, staff training and the effort we make every day, we strive to make your member experience second to none. Over the past year, we have dug even deeper, exploring ways to move beyond customer service to a better understanding of what it means to be truly inclusive. How can we be more sensitive to the needs of a diverse membership? What does inclusion mean for the communities we serve? And how can we ensure that everyone feels supported by the Y? These are sometimes delicate conversations to have. To help us through, we enlisted a Y-USA Diversity and Inclusion trainer who led a one-day staff retreat last December. After many follow-up conversations, we developed a Diversity and Inclusion Policy for our employees and a simple, brief statement for our members. The statement for our members, which can be found at the top of page 43, builds on our mission, which defines the Rye Y as “a family-oriented community service organization which welcomes all people…” It puts into writing our commitment to inclusion. And it acknowledges that we are stronger when people with diverse beliefs, backgrounds and life experience come together in community. If you ask me, that’s what makes the Y so special. Sincerely,

Gregg Howells Rye Y Executive Director

My dad grew up in Rye, on Milton Road. Coming here was like a return to a piece of family history. It felt very comfortable. There is always a welcoming, smiling face greeting me when I come in. It’s a warm welcome upstairs too. I’ve become friends with some of the folks on the Fitness Center floor. I play golf with George. It’s all part of the friendly atmosphere. The staff is always very available to help. The Rye Y offers so much. It is a resource to keep me healthy. Exercising has extended my good health and physical vigor. When I have a good workout I leave with a mental payoff. My disposition towards the day is enhanced. I enjoy passing by Child Watch and waving at the kids. The Y seems to serve the seven ages of man, from infant to elderly. If the Y’s mission is to serve the community in as broad a way as possible, then it’s succeeded. I am looking forward to being here for a LONG time.

PROGRAM REGISTRATION REGISTRATION Glossary of terms ROLLOVER WEEK - (In Person at Member Services Desk Only) Rollover week is for Family and Youth Members currently in a class during the current session. Evaluation forms for swimming classes must accompany the registration form when registering for the next session. (If your child moves up, days and times may have to change.) If your child remains in the same class day and time, your space will be held for you the entire week of Rollover. However, if you have not re-registered during Rollover Week, you will have lost your placement in the class for the next session. Any class offered free is NOT eligible for rollover. This applies to both Family Members and Youth Members. Anyone wishing to re-register for these classes may do so by filling out a lottery form or going online. Please note that Rollover week is not applicable when registering for summer and fall sessions. MEMBER REGISTRATION - Mail in or Online Registration is mail in/drop off or online for all classes. Members' best chance of securing a place in a class is to use online registration (when available). Online registrations begin at 6 am on day of registration. Member online registration requires a current membership at the Rye YMCA. Visit our website at www.ryeymca.org and click on the blue tab that reads “Register Online. Aquatics, ASA and other select programs are not eligible for online registration. See details on page 8. Forms and instructions can be found in the back of this brochure. Additional copies of the registration form are available at the Member Services Desk. Mail in/drop off registrations are processed through a lottery system beginning on the first day of registration at 9 am. Forms may be dropped off or mailed beginning one month in advance of registration dates. An email will be sent to confirm your successful registration. Visit our online registration portal to check the status of your class choice at www.ryeymca.org. Non-Member REGISTRATION Non-Member Registration is for Non-Members of the Y who wish to participate in a specific program or class. This registration is done in person at the Member Services Desk beginning at 7:30 am, or you may use the online registration beginning at 6 am (see page 8) on the specified Non-Member registration dates (page 6). Must register for youth aquatic classes in person only. FAMILY MEMBER FREE CLASSES Of the free classes offered to Family Members, there is a limit of two free classes per family, per session (additional fees will apply if more than two free classes are selected). Because of the popularity of these classes, free classes are not eligible for rollover. At the end of each session, you will be required to re-register for the class through Member Registration. In addition, if your child misses more than two classes in a row without notifying the Y, the child will be dropped from the class.

FOR COMMUNITY: Celebrating 5 Years of Hope and Healing Nearly everyone has been touched by cancer, either through their own experience or through the diagnosis or a friend, family member or colleague. Recognizing the need to support adults who are facing this dreaded disease, the Rye Y launched LIVESTRONG at the YMCA in July 2011. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a free, 12-week small group program designed to help cancer survivors regain their total health. Over the past five years, 458 adults have grown stronger through the program’s focus on physical activity, stress reduction and emotional support. Along the way, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA reached several notable milestones. In 2013, the Rye Y was recognized by YMCA of the USA and the LIVESTRONG Foundation with the Excellence and Innovation Award for hosting LIVESTRONG week—a celebration of cancer survivors and their families that has continued every year since 2012. In 2015, we started an alumni group to keep program participants connected to the Y and each other. Also, in 2015, we became the first YMCA in the country to offer LIVESTRONG at the YMCA at a Federally-Qualified Health Center. Thanks to a strong partnership with Open Door Family Medical Centers and Soul Ryeders, we began holding Spanishlanguage classes at Open Door’s Port Chester facility. Lori-Beth Patsy, an Open Door exercise physiologist who led the first class, wrote of her group: “You have NO idea how grateful they are for this. After going through what they went through and then not being able to share their stories because of language and other barriers, they were so happy.” For additional information about LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, see page 34 or call Tanya at 914-967-6363, ext. 206 or email: tanya@ryeymca.org

FOR COMMUNITY: Y CARES A member writes: Without the support of Y Cares, my children would never have been able to take classes such as swimming, dance and gymnastics. We would not have been able to even be members! It has also allowed our daughter to experience camp, which would have been impossible due to our financial situation. We have been able to use the gym to get ourselves in shape as well. We have met amazing friends all because of the Y!

The Y Cares program allows the Rye YMCA to keep a powerful promise to the communities we serve: no-one will be turned away from Y programs and services because he or she can’t pay. In 2015 alone, the Y awarded over $520,000 in financial aid to 391 families and individuals in need. Scholarships allowed children to join their peers at camp, while membership subsidies gave individuals and families the full Y experience, often during difficult times. It's easy to support Y Cares. Make a one-time donation online or at Member Services. Or speak to a Member Services staff person about making an ongoing gift through your monthly bank draft.

In the summer of 2012, I became an Aquatics Instructor for the Rye Y. I have had breast cancer, cataract surgery, and I also lost my husband to ALS. Throughout my ordeals, the Rye Y has been extremely supportive and concerned. Teaching has been my salvation. It gets me out of the house, socializing, exercising and feeling better. I love to help people and it feels so incredible when someone tells me how much better they feel after taking my classes. I love the water aerobics ‘pool crowd’ at the Rye Y. They are lots of fun and so friendly. The key to the Rye Y is the people! They are so great and the Y is very responsive to its members!
