2015 SPRING PROGRAM GUIDE Session III: January 24 - April 10, 2015 Session IV: April 11, June 22, 2015

Welcome to the Rye YMCA! Dear Friends, By the time you receive this program guide, we’ll be blowing out the candles on our Centennial year, and what a year it’s been! We celebrated 100 years with family events, including the Harlem Ambassadors basketball game and a scavenger hunt for all ages. We celebrated physical activity with our 100-day step challenge. We celebrated our past through photographs, displays and stories. And we celebrated our volunteers at a Gala that topped any party in recent memory. Through it all, we never lost sight of our core mission: to strengthen the communities we serve through programs Centennial Scavenger Hunt that support youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Energized by a spirit of possibility, we seized new opportunities, expanding our community health initiatives and finding new ways to support our members. As we look ahead to 2015, we are rolling up our sleeves and preparing for the next 100 years. Our board of directors is already meeting to develop a strategic plan that will chart our course into a future that is stronger, healthier and more exciting than ever. We invite you to walk with us into that future, so you can one day say, “I helped shape the Y’s second 100 years.”

"I came to the YMCA just for a swimming class. During my visit I learned I could sign up for a family membership and use all the other great resources that are available. Along the way, I discovered the service committee, which I could be part of and give back to the community. Now I do not see the Y as a place where I come and learn how to swim or exercise; I see it as a institution which is the house of the community, where people gather to collectively make a better society.” Edison Blanco, Togetherhood Committee Co-Chair (shown with his wife Heather and daughter Eleanor)

HEALTH/MEDICAL RECOMMENDATIONS:

For your own safety, we recommend that you consult with a physician prior to enrolling in an exercise class if one of the following applies to you: female over 45 years old, male over 34 years old, smoker over the age of 30, personal or family history of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes or other chronic illness, have had recent surgery, or limited by any musculoskeletal problem. The YMCA reserves the right to require a physician’s approval for participation in any activity.

I feel like I ask the people in the gym how to use those machines a thousand times. Every single time, there's a smile and they help. It is absolutely wonderful. Now there are new machines so I'm going to have to ask again soon!!"

LIVESTRONG AT THE YMCA

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a FREE twelve-week, small group program designed for adult cancer survivors. Our goal is to help participants build muscle mass and muscle strength, increase flexibility and endurance and improve functional ability. Additional goals include reducing the severity of therapy side effects, preventing unwanted weight changes and improving energy levels and self esteem. A final goal of the program is to assist participants in developing their own physical fitness program so they can continue to practice a healthy lifestyle, not only as part of their recovery, but as a way of life. In addition to the physical benefits, the program provides participants a supportive environment and a feeling of community with their fellow survivors, Y staff and members. Y fitness instructors work with each participant to fit the program to their individual needs. The instructors are trained in the elements of cancer, post rehab exercise and supportive cancer care. The Y: We're for Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility

FOR COMMUNITY: TOGETHERHOOD Even with the press of work and family obligations, our members still feel the need to connect with their community and each other in meaningful ways. Togetherhood is a national Y initiative that involves members of all ages in projects that benefit the communities we serve…and beyond. Togetherhood was launched at the Rye Y in May 2014, when we formed a Service Committee composed of Rye Y members. The Committee’s role is to identify, plan and implement at least four projects over the course of a year. Along the way, we’re creating new friendships, building new partnerships and making a real difference outside the walls of the Y. Our first service project was held in August 2014. Nine adults and five teens traveled to St. Ignatius Middle School in the Hunt’s Point section of the Bronx to paint walls and stairwells. The mission of St. Ignatius is to “break the cycle of poverty through education.” Our second project brought us to The Sharing Shelf in Port Chester, a small organization with a big job: collecting and distributing new and gently used children’s clothing to families in need all over Westchester County. In November, the Togetherhood Committee conducted a clothing drive for The Sharing Shelf, which was followed by a day of service at the organization’s warehouse.

We hope you will join us in community service. If you would like to become a member of the Service Committee or be notified of upcoming volunteer opportunities, please contact Denise Woodin at 914-967-6363, ext 101 or at denise@ryeymca.org

FOR COMMUNITY: Y CARES A Member Writes: After my husband lost his job, with our low income, our 3-year old daughter would be affected by this situation. But thanks to God and thanks to donors and volunteers who make financial assistance possible, now our daughter will continue to enjoy all [the] great programs at the YMCA.

The Y Cares program allows the Rye YMCA to keep a powerful promise to the communities we serve: no-one will be turned away from Y programs and services because he or she can’t pay. Between January 1 and October 31, 2014 alone, the Y awarded over $535,700 in financial aid to 446 families in need. Scholarships allowed children to join their peers at camp, while membership subsidies gave individuals and families the full Y experience, often during difficult times.Your support helps us keep that promise every day.
