SAFETY FIRST Dear Friends, Last April, the Rye Y tightened our check-in procedures to require every person entering the Y—members, parents, caregivers, staff, visitors and program participants—to sign in. Launched during National Child Abuse Awareness Month, this policy protects not only the hundreds of children who pass through the Y every day, but all members and visitors. Knowing who’s in our facility and when, helps us deter crime and account for everyone in the unlikely event of an emergency situation. The new check-in procedure is one of the most visible signs of our commitment to safety. However, behind the scenes we’re doing so much more, including (but not limited to): • •

An extensive application process for all staff, including interviews, reference checks, criminal background checks (for applicants over 18) and mandatory child abuse prevention training First aid, CPR and AED training for staff as required by their position

• • •

A comprehensive and detailed Emergency Procedures plan, which was updated earlier this year Regular sex offender screenings on all members Detailed policies and procedures to keep children from harm.

We are fortunate to live, work and play in a beautiful city where crime is relatively low and children are loved and protected. However, we know that safety requires vigilance. You can help by making sure we have photos of you and all family members who belong to the Y, and by keeping your personal and emergency contact information up to date. As a family-oriented community facility that welcomes all people, the Rye Y is dedicated to your health, wellness and safety. So show us your card, scan your phone or sign the book and…welcome! We’ve got your back. Sincerely,

Gregg Howells Executive Director

I was so happy to find the Rye Y this year! We moved from South Africa two years ago and the Rye Y has accommodated us and made us feel very welcome. My 6-year-old daughter, Alexia, went to summer camp and loved it. She keeps talking about it. She learned how to swim at camp. Now she is a good swimmer – better than me! The Rye Y has really opened up our lives. Alexia goes to Fun Club on school vacation days and likes seeing the staff she knows from camp. And I bring her to Child Watch when I exercise. She will definitely be back at camp next year. The Y has changed me too. I started with the Zumba class on Saturdays. It was so fun! I was Chenai lost at first but just loved the energy. After that I said, let me just try the treadmill. I started coming twice a week. After class I had so much energy, I went to the Fitness Center. People started noticing the positive change in me. My body has taken on a new shape. I feel so motivated and I have so much more energy. I’m so excited about my experience here! The Rye Y has changed both of us and our everyday lives!

PROGRAM REGISTRATION REGISTRATION GLOSSARY OF TERMS ROLLOVER WEEK - (In Person at Member Services Desk Only) Rollover week is for Family and Youth Members currently in a class during the current session. Evaluation forms for swimming classes must accompany the registration form when registering for the next session. (If your child moves up, days and times may have to change.) If your child remains in the same class day and time, your space will be held for you the entire week of Rollover. However, if you have not re-registered during Rollover Week, you will have lost your placement in the class for the next session. Any class offered free is NOT eligible for rollover. This applies to both Family Members and Youth Members. Anyone wishing to re-register for these classes may do so by filling out a lottery form or going online. Please note that Rollover week is not applicable when registering for summer and fall sessions. MEMBER REGISTRATION - MAIL IN OR ONLINE Registration is mail in/drop off or online for all classes. Members' best chance of securing a place in a class is to use online registration (when available). Online registrations begin at 6 am on day of registration. Member online registration requires a current membership at the Rye YMCA. Visit our website at www.ryeymca.org and click on the blue tab that reads “Register Online. Aquatics, ASA and other select programs are not eligible for online registration. See details on page 8. Must register for youth aquatic classes in person only. FAMILY MEMBER FREE CLASSES Of the free classes offered to Family Members, there is a limit of two free classes per family, per session (additional fees will apply if more than two free classes are selected). DEVELOPMENT: NURTURING POTENTIAL EVERY CHILDAND ANDTEEN TEEN YOUTHYOUTH DEVELOPMENT: NURTURING THETHE POTENTIAL OFOF EVERY CHILD

STRONG SWIMMERS, CONFIDENT KIDS

At the Y, we believe that swimming is a life skill. Our program is categorized by age range and swim abilities.

• Swim Starters develops water enrichment and aquatic readiness in children ages 6 months to 3 years. This category

focuses on developing swim readiness skills through fun and confidence-building experiences. Parents also learn how to supervise children in the water, how to prevent accidents and how to plan for emergencies.

• Swim Basics develops personal water safety and basic swimming skills in students of all ages. Swimmers develop a

high level of comfort in the water by practicing safe water habits, engaging in underwater exploration, and learning how to swim to safety and exit if they fall into a body of water.

• Swim Strokes introduces and refines stroke technique. Having mastered the fundamentals, students learn additional

water safety skills and build stroke technique, developing skills that prevent chronic disease, increase social-emotional and cognitive well-being and foster a lifetime of physical activity.

The biggest gift of joining the Rye Y, the Rye Y Tribe, and the Rye Tri group, was that I re-discovered that I had something to offer others, especially those who were the most nervous about swimming in pools or open water. Mark [my husband] and I now help swimmers of both triathlon groups to be more comfortable and efficient in the water. Some friends even call me the swim whisperer. Many people I have met at the Y have helped me learn to function on land (biking, running, core and strength training) so it is so nice to give back and help others. All the people I teach in my “Pre-endurance” swim class, private lessons, all the people I workout with, and the people I meet in the locker room have become pretty special to me too. The Rye Y has become a place where I laugh, get stronger inside and out, and catch up with fabulous friends. It’s my second home.

FOR COMMUNITY: SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Some partnerships are meant to last. In 1963, Rye Mayor H. Clay Johnson formed the Mayor’s Committee for the Handicapped, which soon evolved into the Rye Association for the Handicapped. Now celebrating its 50th anniversary as an incorporated non-profit organization, the Association for the Handicapped serves adults with permanent physical disabilities through activities that enhance quality of life. Its volunteer leadership includes John Annunziata (president) and Dottie Little (vice president). From the beginning, the Rye Y opened its doors and its heart to the group. Every Friday and Monday morning, year round, Rye Association for the Handicapped members enjoy an hour of free therapeutic and recreational swim, led by a Y instructor. After drying off, they adjourn to the Y’s Multi-Purpose Room where they socialize over coffee and refreshments. Charlotte Vaughan, a member of the group since 1974, remarked “I just love the exercise. It keeps me going. And it’s a nice group of young folks. The swim instructor is great. I’ve been here for so long, I just feel like, it’s my place! I had four children, but they’re all over the place. This is like another family to belong to.” Of all of the Y’s community partnerships, our relationship with the Rye Association for the Handicapped is the longest running and one of the most special. Our staff looks forward to seeing the familiar faces twice a week and checking in with group members on topics as mundane as the weather and as important as their health and families. Charlotte’s cousin Ilse Wirth told us “I’m just thankful to the YMCA that we have this program. We feel just like a family here. And I really enjoy that. I come with them twice a week and I exercise with them in the water. I’m 81 years old and my doctor says ‘keep up what you’re doing!’ So, it’s good.” We salute the Rye Association for the Handicapped on their 50th Anniversary. You inspire us with your dedication and your perseverance in the face of challenge. Here’s to another 50 years!

FOR COMMUNITY: Y CARES “We are a senior couple. We live on a fixed income. Without financial help it wouldn’t be possible to attend the Y. Swimming in the warm pool helps to relieve pain and support health. Since we started attending [the] Y we feel better. Thanks a lot to the donors and the administration for making it possible.” The Y Cares program allows the Rye YMCA to keep a powerful promise to the communities we serve: no one will be turned away from Y programs and services because he or she can’t pay. In 2018 alone, the Y awarded over $418,000 in financial aid to amilies and individuals who needed a helping hand. It's easy to support Y Cares. Make a one-time donation online or at Member Services. Or speak to a Member Services staff person about making an ongoing gift through your monthly bank draft.
