Football REPORT

President’s REPORT Dear Member, Welcome to the May edition of our Journal and the opportunity to update you on all that is happening in your Club. And there is certainly much to report on. Members that have visited recently would have noted the foyer is closed as work progresses on renovations there, which are expected to be completed by early June. Members and guests have adapted well to the temporary entry area. We appreciate your cooperation during the renovations and we are sure you will appreciate the new area, once completed. The renovations will include a new promotions area adjacent to the foyer. To celebrate the completion of this area, the Club is giving away a 2017 Mazda 3 Maxx hatch, linked to membership renewals and new members joining. Full details of this promotion are in subsequent pages and I encourage you to renew your membership and receive your entry tickets to ensure you have a chance of winning this great prize. It is with sadness that I report on the passing of Martin Westbrook, our long-standing Beverage Manager. Although Martin had been bravely battling illness for some years his passing was sudden and unexpected and our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Shirley and family. Each quarter I report on our long-term planning for the Club and adjacent property holdings, and each quarter I advise that we are inching forward, albeit much slower than we would like. It is much of the same for this report, although we have had some recent discussions with Council on two of our planning proposals. At the time of writing we are awaiting further details from Council to ascertain the likelihood of either proposal proceeding to the next step. We will keep members informed of any progress. I mentioned in my last report in February that the Club had made a further donation to Ryde Hospital for $50,000 toward the purchase of an operation traction table for use by orthopaedic patients. This follows a previous donation by the Club in July last year of $54,000 for a new ultrasound machine. Board members and management were recent guests at the hospital to view the new ultrasound machine in action and also the facilities that will house the new traction table. We are confident that both these facilities will be well used by the local community, which includes many club members and their families. While on the health front, a get-well message to Directors John Dunlea and Allen Douglas, who have both suffered health setbacks in recent weeks. Our best wishes for a speedy recovery to both. On a personal note, I too have had a period of illness but can report that I am now on the mend and hope to see you around the club in the future. As always, I thank you for your continued support of the club. Keith Aggett President

Our Wests Tigers State Cup side has had a dismal start to the season. The first game was against the Wyong Roos and played out in the most atrocious wet and windy conditions. It was a game that we never really got into and were beaten 42-0. The second game was against the Penrith Panthers at Campbelltown, and sadly again we were never in the game, this time beaten 56-12. Our third game, again at Campbelltown, was against the New Zealand Warriors and the less said about this game the better, as we were beaten yet again, by 36-0. Round 4 saw a major improvement with a narrow loss to Newtown Jets, 24-26, followed in Round 5 with an upset win over then competition leaders North Sydney, 18-16. Round 6 saw a 22-30 loss to Mounties and that left us 1 and 5 after six rounds. We look forward to better results in coming weeks. On a brighter note, you may have seen in The Weekly Times publication that Ryde-Eastwood Football Club would be entering two U19s football sides in the Sydney-wide competition. This is very exciting for the Football Club as we have not had a football side playing exclusively in our colours for the last fifteen years. All games will be advertised within the club, detailing venues and times, and on our website. The Wests Tigers State Cup team will also be playing six games in our scarlet and white colours. More details plus the draw for these games can be found on page 13 - Up the Hawks! Malcolm Chapple - President Ryde-Eastwood District Rugby League Football Club

MEMORABILIA As part of the current building refurbishment, we intend to provide a dedicated memorabilia area for both the Football and Leagues Clubs. If you have any items of historical interest related to the Leagues Club’s early years or the Ryde-Eastwood Hawks, and which you believe might be a good addition to this display, please contact General Manager, Chris McCarthy on 9807 2444 or info@releagues.com.au Thank you.

Interior Revitalisation Project COFFEE CLUB Renovations to The Coffee Club service area were completed on 1 February 2017 and the premises were re-opened on 2 February 2017. The perimeter area screening is a separate building project and is not yet complete, with light boxes and decorative inserts still to be installed. A temporary black insert has been placed between the screen sections for safety reasons. These will be removed when the other items mentioned above are installed. There is also new tiling to be completed around the base of the screen on the outside. The screening work was done at the time of the Coffee Club refurbishment to minimise any further impact on Coffee Club trading. In addition, there is still a section of the perimeter to be installed near the column where the TV is located, and the handrail area is to be modified. These works will be completed as part of Stage 2. An image of the proposed finished look of The Coffee Club perimeter is depicted to the right. MAIN ENTRY, FOYER AND PASSAGEWAY TO BISTRO Stage 1 of the refurbishment project commenced on 27 February 2017. STAGE 1 Involved work on the ceiling from the Auditorium stairs through to the Bistro, as well as new joinery to the toilets and adjacent areas. These works have been completed out of normal trading hours to minimise disruption. There are still tiling works, painting, signage and new carpet to be completed, but these works can be accomplished mostly during normal working hours and without impacting on members and guests. This work will be completed along with stage 2 works. STAGE 2 This stage involves the complete closure of the main entry and foyer and the provision of a temporary entry area via the small waiting area near the fish tank. The sign in facility and reception desk have been relocated during this period. These works involve a major redesign of the foyer and a substantial upgrade of the entry area including new floor tiling, ceiling and frameless glass walls, a new promotional display area, as well as other structural changes. This second stage commenced on 20 March and will last approximately 11 weeks with completion expected in early June. We apologise for any inconvenience during these works but also note we will do our best to minimise that.

Why use a Fitness Edge

Personal Trainer?

1. MEASURABLE RESULTS Going it alone in the gym can lead to a lot of self-speculation about how well you’re doing in your workouts. All too often, over a period of time you start to see diminishing results. Many gym goers even give up at this point. Just like any business, the necessity for accurate record keeping is the key to track both volume (say, the amount of weight lifted in a session) and intensity (your repetitions used as part of your workout). At the Fitness Edge, our knowledgeable exercise professionals will work closely with you to manipulate these two key variables using the most efficient exercise protocols. This will be the stepping stone to set you on your way to achieving you exercise goals. 2. EXERCISE PROPERLY Our fully-qualified instructors know exactly how to train you correctly, not just from a safety point of view but also in delivering the results within a realistic time frame. Many people visit the gym and go about their exercise routine without using proper form, so they never optimise their true benefits. This can also lead to a greater risk of injury. Working with a Fitness Edge personal trainer

will change all that. Our personal trainers will show you how to do it right the first time. No longer will you have that self-conscious feeling that you could be doing it all wrong. 3. THEY CAN SHORTEN THE TIME YOU SPEND WORKING OUT Using a Fitness Edge personal trainer means you will work out smarter – not longer. Spending longer in the gym does not equate to better results. Think smart, think ‘intensity’. Our personal trainers know all about intensity. They know how to get the job done quickly and efficiently – and still deliver results. The highly popular HIIT programmes or ‘High Intensity Interval Training’ delivers short bursts of high intensity exercise that delivers proven weight loss results. We don’t advocate launching you straight into one of these programmes, but instead of spending an hour strolling along on the treadmill, we will ramp up the intensity of your training. This will deliver a challenging but satisfying workout to achieve your goals (including not spending all of your life in the gym)!

4. THEY MAKE YOU MORE ACCOUNTABLE Our PT team makes you more accountable. Couldn’t make it the gym? If you’re working out alone, you’re only letting one person down - yourself! Having a Fitness Edge personal trainer should motivate you not to let down your trainer, too. By working together, you will remain focussed on your fitness journey and on course to achieving your goals. 5. VARIETY IS THE ‘SPICE OF TRAINING’ When you work out alone, do you follow the same routine? Maybe a few weights to start and then a canter on the treadmill? A Fitness Edge personal trainer will certainly give you ‘the edge’ when it comes to exciting new workouts designed to work every muscle in your body. Workout with one of our fully qualified exercise specialists and add excitement and variety to your routine. You won’t regret it! * Subject to Exercise Safety screening.

INTERNAL CLUBS CAMERA CLUB Great news, the ‘Two Eastwoods Camera Club Competition’ (Eastwood in the UK and Ryde Eastwood Camera Club) is ‘run and won’ and we came out on top this year for the first time in four years. We scored 349 to Eastwood (UK) 343, a close contest. A real credit to all the great photographers in our club. News like this is fantastic as we see improvements in members’ photography with mentors matched up with less experienced photographers. The club is moving forward with a lot of changes in the past 12 months, and we would love to welcome even more new members. We have had six new members so far this year and we would love to see more. Whether you’re a novice or experienced, come and join one of our meetings – they’re fun and entertaining. CHESS CLUB The club’s 46th annual general meeting was held on Wednesday 25 January, and the following officers were elected for 2017: President – Les Mikolajczyk; Vice-president – Bill Gletsos; Treasurer – Mohan Pagadala; Secretary – Rob Watson. In February we held our annual Rapid Championship tournament (25 minutes flat), which was won (again!) by Donato Mallari on 9/9, a point and a half clear of Chris Ball in 2nd place and three points ahead of Arthur Huynh in third. The U1600 division was won by Norm Greenwood and David Zanon on 5/9 with Xerix Mohseni third. The Club Championship Preliminary round-robin tournament has passed the halfway point and after 6 rounds has the following leaders: Group A – Donato Mallari (5½/6) and Michael Anderson (4/6); Group B – Shane Dibley (5/5) and Richard Galwey (4½/5); Group C – Chris Ball (4/4) and Mohan Pagadala (4/5). As always, new players of any standard are welcome on Wednesdays at 7:30pm. Visit our website at www.rydeeastwoodchessclub.blogspot.com. Contact Les Mikolajczyk (0412 970 059) or Rob Watson (0408 463 759). EUCHRE CLUB The Euchre Club held its Annual General Meeting on 22nd February in the Willanda Room. There was a great attendance by the members and the following were elected for 2017. President: Don Baillie, Vice President: Rhonda Fekete, Secretary: June Stewart and Treasurer: May Griffiths. Best wishes to the committee for the coming year. Our congratulations go to our monthly winners - January 2017: 1st Peter Keast, 2nd Bede Bendeich & Celeste Norman. February 2017: Equal 1st Marita Dann & Don Baillie. March 2017: 1st Elaine Duncan, 2nd Liz Carroll. An invitation is extended to any experienced Euchre players to join us on Wednesday nights at 7.20pm in the Willandra Room. At the conclusion of play each night we enjoy a light supper. For further information contact our President Don Baillie on 9869 2857. June Stewart. THE FISHING CLUB The annual Fishing Club presentation night was held on Friday 24 March in the Golden Hawk Restaurant. Thirty members with their partners attended. Our patron and Leagues Club President, Keith Aggett, was unable to attend due to ill-health. I think it is only the second time in forty years that he has been unable to attend. His duties were undertaken extremely well by club director, Malcolm Chapple, who was accompanied by his lovely wife Judy. The Keith Aggett Trophy for the biggest fish was won by Steve Adamson with a 1.55kg morwong, a bit down on his previous win with a 6kg snapper. The LJ Hayes trophy for the heaviest weight of fish for the year went to Sam Sundar with 44.75kg of eatable fish. The runner-up was Gary

Lee with 34.8kg of fish, followed by Winston Foo with 25.46kg in 3rd place. The biggest fish second place went to Sam Sundar with a 1.35kg morwong, George Varga came third with a 1.26kg fish. The fishing club organises monthly deep-sea charter boat fishing trips on the first Sunday of most months. Any interested club member should contact Sam Sundar on 0413 000 303, or attend the monthly fishing club meeting on the third Thursday of each month at 8pm (except December). Fishing Club President, Trevor Fahey. GOLF CLUB The season started where it finished the year before, at Fox Hills with Valery P winning A Grade Keith Chan B; runners-up on the day were Hendo and John Nilan. Jeff has been requesting a game at North Turramurra and now we know why - he won the B grade medal with 12 under his handicap; Ulla had a win in A Grade. Runners-up on the day were Hendo and Chris Spence. The Ridge was the start of the Stableford Trophy with day winners Hendo in A Grade and Natalia P in B Grade. Runner-up prizes went to Ulla Wood and John Nilan. Richmond was a team event with Frank and Valery narrowly beating Rick and Dave. The Coast hosted the qualifier for Matchplay in very challenging conditions. The day’s event was a medal round and congratulations go to Robert and Brian. Runners-up were Valery and Frank. Brian had a very profitable day winning the Eagle’s Nest after 3+ years of it not being won - 81 balls. Lynwood was another wet day, but that didn’t seem to bother our winner Slava or runner-up Sharon. First round of matchplay was contested at Windsor with congratulations to the top 8 progressing to the next round (plenty of upsets on the day). The winner on the day was Slava on count back from John Nilan. Don’t forget to check the website for full results www.relgolfclub.com Annika. INDOOR BOWLS At our recent AGM the following were re-elected unopposed to committee: Narelle Waldock (President), Olive Meredith (Vice President), Cath Lynn (Secretary/Treasurer), Janet Boyd, Shirley Robertson, Marie Munce, Anne Sim, Jim Harvey, John Trost and Tony Maratona. A big thank you to these people for their continued service to the Indoor Bowls Club and thanks also to our Patron, Mr Jack King, for his attendance. Recent successful social functions were a buffet and Hat Parade for the Wednesday ladies, and dinner for the Thursday night players. As usual, Sidney and his staff provided us with an excellent menu. We are pleased to welcome new members to both our bowls sessions. Learners welcome. Ladies play Wednesday 10.15am to 2pm, and mixed play Thursday 7.15pm to 10pm. Enquiries, phone Narelle 8065 9284 or Cath m: 0413 600 019. SENIORS CLUB For the last three months we have been very busy with a trip to Morpeth (replacing the booked outing on the Cockatoo Run, which was unfortunately cancelled at short notice). However, we had a delightful day taking in all the historic buildings and shops with lunch at East Maitland Bowling Club. We celebrated St. Patrick’s Day at Waterview Restaurant, Berowra Waters where we had a three-course lunch and were entertained by a wonderful Irish singer. We enjoyed our luncheon cruise aboard the Macquarie Princess in April. Lots more trips are scheduled for later in the year so come along and join us. On the first Monday of the month we have a walk. Every Thursday is a game of cards (Solo) and members are very welcome. For more information on Solo please contact Pam Davey on 8065 2391. We have two meetings a month - on the first and third Thursday at 11am in one of the function

rooms at the Club. On the third Thursday we also have a speaker. Our joining fee is only $5 for twelve months. For more information please contact Marie Weston, Secretary, on 9638 7419. SQUASH CLUB The recent inclement weather may have sabotaged other sporting clubs and their members from engaging in their favourite past times, but not the squashies. Regardless of the weather outside or the time of day, the squash courts are always well lit, protected from the elements and a great place to pit yourself against an opponent. A date for your diaries – 5th May heralds the presentation dinner for Ernie Speed. The cost is $50 and includes a 3-course meal plus drinks. If you are available to celebrate with Ernie or would like more details, please contact Ernie Speed (number below). Lastly, anyone who would like to play squash with the RELSC squash team, in the upcoming competition starting mid-year, should contact Ernie Speed on 9807 3348. All players are welcome. TRAVELLING BOWLS CLUB Hello to all, since our last update we have held our Annual General Meeting on the 9th February 2017. Details from that meeting are, re-elected members: President: Brenda Paterson. Vice-President: Ray McDonnell. Secretary: Maria Armstrong. Treasurer: John Dixon. Committee members: Maureen Campbell, Jan De Vries, Milly Farrell, Patricia Stewart, Robyn Newton and Robin Burrows. Our first trip of 2017 was on 19th February when we went to Towradgi Bowling club, where we enjoyed a lovely lunch and chatted happily to members. Our next outing is on Sunday 23 April when we are off to Picton Bowling Club, which should be a great day as we have always enjoyed ourselves at that Club. The dress code is Mufti and hopefully the weather will co-operate and the sun will shine. As always the bus leaves at 9.30am from Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club. After that, we have a trip Umina Bowling Club on the 18th June, in Club dress uniform. Everyone is welcome to come along and join in the fun, and as the saying goes, “The more the merrier”. Hopefully all our members who have been ill have now fully recovered and can join us once again. Also, hoping everyone had a great Easter. Please contact Robyn Newton on 9858 3014, Brenda Paterson on 8819 9650 or Milly Farrell on 9874 4667. TRAVEL CLUB The year is well under way after the Christmas fare. We started January with a warm-up lunch at the Club, a meet and greet for Members. February saw us enjoy a great trip on the Nepean Belle. Firstly there was a run around the Olympic sites in Penrith, then down to the paddle steamer and a leisurely trip up the river. The day was perfect. In March, we held the AGM in the Ryedale Room to hear the Report on the year 2016 and the election of Committee. With all positions filled we start looking toward future events. First up was a luncheon at The Mean Fiddler on St Patrick’s Day. After a lovely drink on arrival, we sat down to a hearty meal and lively entertainment. We sang some old songs led by a fine musician and some liberal lubrication. For the sweet-toothed there was a visit to the Lindt Chocolate Shop on the way home. Our next outing in April featured a trip up the Hawkesbury to see the Seven islands in the river, with a morning tea and lunch to follow. See you at our next Meeting!

COMMUNITY NEWS

Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club Donation Ryde Hospital has been able to upgrade its medical equipment thanks to two donations from Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club.

“Every single day my team in the Emergency Department has a need for this machine,” Dr Roberts said.

The Club recently raised $50,000 for a new operation traction table after already donating more than $50,000 for a portable ultrasound machine last year.

Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club manager Chris McCarthy said he was glad the club’s donation could make a difference to their local hospital.

The operating traction table is used in orthopaedic surgeries to carefully position elderly patients during their procedures.

“Ryde Hospital has been an important part of our community for the last century, and we want to assist in ensuring it continues to proivide that great service by helping pay for these important facilities,” Mr McCarthy said.

Ryde Hospital undertakes a high number of orthopaedic surgeries on elderly people and the new equipment is replacing an operating traction table that was at the end of its working life. The Hospital’s Emergency Department was also able to replace its 10-year old ultrasound machine last year with a brand new portable unit thanks to $54,100 donated by Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club. Ryde Hospital’s ED director Peter Roberts said the ultrasound machine was an important piece of medical equipment.

“The majority of our club members live in the local area and a large number are also senior citizens, which means that the equipment would likely benefit many of our members or their families at some point in the future. The Leagues Club also recognised the significant donation of $10,000 from the Ryde Hospital Pink Ladies who do a fantastic job for the local community,” he said. Dr Roberts wrote the above letter thanking the club for its donation and detailing how the ultrasound machine is used by the Emergency Department to assist patients.

DARTS OR SQUASH Are you interested? Earlier this year the Club’s long-standing Darts Club was disbanded due to a very low number of active players. Shortly after, the Squash Club was temporarily suspended for the same reason. If there are any club members that are interested in joining the Squash Club to keep it going or reforming the Darts Club could you please email your interest to darts@releagues.com.au or squash@releagues.com.au. Alternatively, please leave your contact details at club reception.

The Fitness Edge Swim School offers a safe, friendly and encouraging environment for people of all ages and abilities. Our youngest students are six months of age and our most senior member is in their 70s. It’s never too late to learn the life skill of swimming.

While the main focus in these levels is still correct technique, we also develop speed and racing skills.

All staff at The Fitness Edge are Austswim Qualified and all hold current CPR certification.

Adult classes These classes are held on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning.

Babies & Pre-School Classes These classes are held from Monday to Friday between 11am and 1pm. There are limited pre-school positions on Saturdays. All Instructors on these classes are qualified in Austswim Infant & Pre-school Aquatics. Pre-schoolers’ safest option is to attend classes consistently. Our indoor facility makes this a great place to learn to swim, a skill for life, all year round. School-Age Learn to Swim Classes The classes cater for all school ages and abilities. The focus for younger children is on safety and gaining confidence; from there we develop all swimming strokes. Our consistent swimmers move on to Dolphins, Marlin and Squads.

Places in these classes are very limited and are subject to an assessment of new swimmers’ ability and available classes.

Beginner classes are for members who are not confident to Swim with their faces in the water, or just want some tips to improve their skills. Classes are run in school terms only. For further details, please call the Swim School office on 9808 7617 or check out our website at www.thefitnessedge.com.au Our office hours during term time are: Monday – Friday: 10am – 6pm Saturday: 8am – 1.15pm

“Learning to swim has many benefits for our children. It’s great for their health and well being, it enhances their selfesteem and importantly teaches them a respect for water. While children are capable of being independently mobile in the water from a very young age, they must never be left unsupervised. No child is drown proof”. Laurie Lawrence
