Old Dominion University College of Arts and Letters Graduate Program in International Studies Dissertation Defense

When the Wind Blows: An Evaluation of Key Factors that Enabled the Proliferation of Wind Energy Generation in the United States Through 2016 Mary Sodini Bell Increasing CO2 emissions have led to extreme weather phenomena labeled as climate change. Energy consumption and the burning of fossil fuels are primary contributors to climate change, which necessitates finding ways to decrease fossil fuel consumption critical to preserving the planet while helping nations reduce dependence on costly fossil fuels. Renewable energy is one part of the solution to reducing CO2 emissions. Wind energy is the fastest growing form of renewable energy across the world and within the U.S., but the key factors that enabled the U.S. wind industry to grow from zero installed capacity at the beginning of 1981 to enough capacity to power 25 million average U.S. homes by the end of 2016 remains unclear. The dissertation examines the wind industry growth and identifies the factors of public opinion, presidential leadership, state incentives and mandates, technological developments, and fossil fuel prices as crucial to wind energy development in the U.S. COMMITTEE: Dr. Peter Schulman (Chair)* Dr. Austin Jersild Dr. Glen Sussman

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, The Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers fellowships abroad for one academic year to graduating college seniors, graduate students, young professionals, scientists and artists. Program participants pursue graduate or professional study, advanced research, or English teaching in elementary and secondary schools or universities. Each year, approximately 1,600 Americans

The Graduate School is gearing up for the fall 2018 3MT (3-minute-thesis) competition. We are hosting a spring information workshop for interested graduate students. We will discuss the competition and its rules, as well as outline plans we’ll offer to assist student competitors with their preparations through summer into early fall. The 1st and 2nd place winners of the inaugural 3MT will also demonstrate their presentations. Students who expect to defend their final thesis or dissertation product in the fall 2018 to summer 2019 time period are eligible to compete. They can be in the project proposal, data collection, and/or final writing stage as long as their supervisors verify to us that they will be fully completed within this time period. PLEASE share this email with your students as widely and as often as possible. The spring workshop is Thursday, April 12, from 12:00 – 1:20 p.m. in the Strome Entrepreneurial Center in the Visual Arts Building. We are providing LUNCH to those who attend. Space is limited. Grant Period: 9 months Affiliation Fees/Tuition Independent Study/Research: USIEF will cover tuition for grantees other than Ph.D. candidates up to an amount of $4,000 for the full academic year. For Ph.D. candidates, USIEF will pay the cost of affiliation to the university, but not tuition for courses. USIEF will also cover Hebrew or Arabic language study fees up to a maximum of $1,700. Internships and Opportunities ODU Gay Cultural Studies Research Grants - Announcement & Application Information ODU Gay Cultural Studies is excited to announce the creation of two new annual Arts & Letters research grants aimed at supporting faculty and students engaged in projects that promise to advance LGBTQ scholarly and creative work at Old Dominion University. The faculty grant will be awarded annually to a full-time member of the College research/teaching staff and will cover direct costs up to $3,000 for one academic year. The student grant will be awarded annually to an undergraduate or graduate student whose research/creative project is supported and supervised by a full-time member of the faculty, and will similarly cover direct costs up to $3,000 for one academic year. Students and faculty who are working as partners on a single research/creative project may apply for both grants. If no grantee is selected for one category, two awards may be made in the other category. Successful applicants will be selected by an ad hoc committee of college faculty and the A&L Associate Dean of Graduate Studies & Research, in consultation with the Dean of the College and the President of ODU Gay Cultural Studies. The application deadline for Gay Cultural Studies Grants for Research and Creativity (AY 2018-19) is April 20, 2018. 2018 ICPSR Summer Program in Quantitative Methods of Social Research The ICPSR Summer Program provides in-depth, hands-on training in statistical techniques and research methodologies used across the social, behavioral, and medical sciences. We strive to fulfill the needs of researchers throughout their careers by offering instruction on a broad range of topics, from introductory statistics to advanced quantitative methods and cutting-edge techniques. From May through August 2018, the Summer Program will offer more than 80 courses in cities across the US, Canada, and Europe. Registration is now open. FOUR-WEEK SESSIONS Held in Ann Arbor (MI), the Summer Program’s Four-week Sessions provide an immersive learning experience—think “summer camp for social scientists”! Participants in our First (June 25 - July 20) and Second (July 23 – August 17) Sessions can choose from more than 35 courses, including regression, Bayesian analysis, longitudinal analysis, game theory, MLE, SEM, causal inference, multilevel models, race/ethnicity and quantitative methods, and more. New courses in 2018 include social choice theory, as well as two-week workshops on meta-analysis and network analysis. Scholarships are available for researchers and students in political science, public policy, and other disciplines, as well as for returning Summer Program participants. SHORT WORKSHOPS For researchers needing to learn a specific methodological technique in just a few days, the Summer Program offers more than 40 short workshops in 7 cities. New locations in 2018 include Houston and St. Gallen (Switzerland). Workshops of interest include: - Regression Discontinuity Designs (May 21-23, Ann Arbor) - Survival Analysis for the Social and Behavioral Sciences (May 21-25, Chapel Hill) - Qualitative Comparative Analysis (June 4-6, Ann Arbor) - Machine Learning: Applications and Opportunities in Social Science Research (July 9-13, Ann Arbor) - Spatial Econometrics (July 9-13, Ann Arbor) - Bayesian Multilevel Models (July 30-August 3, Berkeley) - Machine Learning for the Analysis of Text as Data (July 16-20, Chapel Hill) - Machine Learning: Uncovering Hidden Structure in Data (August 13-17, Berkeley)

Internships and Opportunities Program Assistant Description: The Peace Operations Training Institute is a small non-profit organization that develops and distributes online training materials for peacekeepers and humanitarian relief workers worldwide. We are based in Williamsburg, Virginia. We are seeking a Program Assistant to provide administrative and clerical support to the Institutional Relations Department in building partnerships as well as engaging with and serving the Institute’s current institutional partners. We accomplish this by publicizing the worldwide distribution of our online training courses to various student populations through several outreach channels and staying in contact with all current and potential institutional partners. The applicant’s duties will include but are not limited to: Development of the Institute’s partnerships -Researching and recommending new institutional partnerships and -Implementing steps that would be needed to engage with these new partnerships. Engaging with current partners -Maintaining a comprehensive list of current institutional partnerships worldwide; -Assisting with data entry of Institutional Partners’ information; -Assisting in the coordination and execution of preparing and sending out letters and promotional packages post mail, email and sometimes by fax; -Calling/Emailing to set up and schedule phone, Skype or in person meetings as needed. Serving current partners -Maintaining inventory of customized platform elements per partner webpage; -Reviewing partner websites to ensure correct information and active links are on the Institute’s partner webpages; -Assisting in the creation of promotional materials per national peacekeeping training center and for other partnerships; -Assisting in the creation, distribution to, receipt of and analysis of surveys. Entering relevant findings in partner excel reports. Other Tasks -Assisting with the writing of narratives on institutional outreach efforts that were undertaken; -Assisting with the collection and analysis of data for PowerPoint presentations as needed; -Assisting with other special projects as needed. -Applicant should be proactive, an innovative thinker, self-motivated, dependable, flexible, comfortable taking direction, and comfortable working at a high volume when necessary. We are a small organization and all employees fill in as needed in response to changing needs. Requirements: • Bachelor’s degree in International Studies, Political Science, Communications, Business or a related field or the equivalent combination of higher education and comparable skills • Prior experience working with a non-profit organization or NGO • The ability to communicate effectively and professionally, both verbally and in writing • Strong command of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Mail Merge, Excel and PowerPoint especially) • Basic familiarity with Adobe Acrobat DC • Willingness to learn about the Institute’s programs and unique line of services Highly desirable: • Professional working proficiency in a second language (French or Spanish preferred) • Lived, studied and/or have traveled abroad • Worked within an international environment and/or with individuals where English was not their first language This is a three-quarter time position and compensation will be $21.50 per hour.
