Director Dr. Roy Breiling is the Director of Instrumental Music Activities at Yavapai College. He conducts the Symphony Orchestra, the Symphonic Band, and Big Bands I and II, and also teaches the music theory courses and gives private lessons. A native of West Allis, Wisconsin, Roy Breiling earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Instrumental Music Education from the University of WisconsinMilwaukee in 1976, and a Master of Music degree from Michigan State University in 1980. He earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Wind Band Conducting, with a minor in trumpet performance, from the University of Arizona in 2000. Prior to his appointment to Yavapai College’s music faculty in 1995, Dr. Breiling has been the Director of Bands at Eastern Arizona College in Thatcher; at Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, Minnesota; and at Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minnesota; and for two years he was an adjunct band director at Minnesota State University-Mankato. Roy Breiling served in the United States Air Force for eight years as Commander and Conductor of Air Force bands in Texas, Mississippi, and New Jersey. His Air Force bands performed at such noteworthy occasions as the Fiesta in San Antonio, Mardi Gras and the 1984 World’s Fair in New Orleans, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parades and the 1987 World Series in New York, and in Glassboro, New Jersey for an appearance by President Ronald Reagan. After an additional fifteen years in the Air Force Reserves, he retired in 2006 as a Lieutenant Colonel. Under Dr. Breiling’s direction, the Yavapai College Symphony Orchestra performs major works by Beethoven, Mozart, Berlioz, and other master composers. The Symphonic Band performs original wind band compositions, marches, show tunes, movie soundtracks, and novelty pieces. The Trailblazers Big Band has made two CD recordings and received First Place at the Reno Jazz Festival in 2012. Dr. Breiling is active as a guest clinician, and conductor for regional band and orchestra festivals, such as the Northern Arizona Regional

Director High School Orchestra Festival in February 2007. He also serves as a adjudicator for scholarship auditions including the Sedona Jazz on the Rocks. He is a member of the College Band Directors National Association, Arizona Music Educators Association, and the Music Educators National Conference. He is a member of the International Trumpet Guild and performs regularly on trumpets in church, in the central Arizona Concert Band, and as the founder-director of the YC Brass Quintet.

Friends of Music About Friends of Music – Yavapai College Friends of Music – Yavapai College (FOM) was founded in the fall of 2009. This all-volunteer organization supports the Music Department students and programs at Yavapai College and is an auxiliary of the Yavapai College Foundation.. We hope to expand our scholarship award funds for instrumental, choral, and piano students through special programs, fundraisers, and Pocket Change. Our newsletter, MUSIC NOTES, showcases YC scholarship recipients, informs about concert, recital, and Brown Bag concert dates, and gives other music department news in an easy-to-read format. Pocket Change collections fund private music lesson and tuition scholarships.

Friends of Music About Pocket Change “Pocket Change” at our concerts is now a long-standing tradition. When you reach into your pockets, purses, or wallets for loose change or a bill or two, you have just helped us give out another music scholarship! Look for the volunteers with the balloons and buckets at intermissions and after concerts and drop in a donation. It’s fun, simple, and definitely appreciated. There, didn’t that feel good? Thank you!
We did not really get the whole wallet, but, what a nice idea!

Instrumental Ensembles Concert Band
This ensemble is for music majors and community members who would like to begin playing a wind or percussion instrument, or for those who have not played an instrument for a number of years. Students will be given group instruction to demonstrate the proper techniques in learning an instrument. Some school instruments are available, but students are encouraged to provide their own. Meets Tuesday afternoons from 4:00 until 6:00 pm.
Symphonic Band
Music majors and community members who play a wind or percussion instrument are encouraged to enroll in this ensemble. The Symphonic Band presents programs of standard wind band literature, concert marches, medleys, and novelty pieces. Meets Thursday evenings from 7:00 until 9:00 pm.
Symphony Orchestra
Music majors and community members who play orchestral string, wind, or percussion instruments are encouraged to enroll in this ensemble. The Symphony Orchestra presents programs of standard orchestral literature and light popular classics. Meets Tuesday evenings from 7:00 until 9:00 pm.
Big Band I (Roughriders)
Open to intermediate-level students and community members through audition who play trumpet, trombone, saxophone, keyboard, percussion, bass and lead guitar. This ensemble primarily focuses on jazz, latin and rock music from the 1940s to the present. Meets Wednesdays from 4:00 until 6:00 pm.
Big Band II (Trailblazers)
Open to advanced-level students and community members who play trumpet, trombone, saxophone, keyboard, percussion, bass and lead guitar. This ensemble focuses on jazz and latin music from the 1940s to the present. Meets Mondays from 4:00 until 6:00 pm.

Instrumental Ensembles YC Brass Quintet
The Yavapai College Brass Quintet is the newest ensemble within the Yavapai College Instrumental Music Department. The current members are: Dr. Roy Breiling, Trumpet, Flugel Horn Dave Holbrook, Trumpet, Flugel Horn Steven Rumbold, French Horn Bill Bowers, Trombone Ben Bueler, Tuba This exciting ensemble has already performed numerous recitals, college events, park concerts, presentations at elementary, middle, and high schools, and at senior living centers throughout northern Arizona. The quintet’s extensive repertoire includes works from the 16th century Renaissance to 21st century world premiere compositions, from classical, Broadway, and patriotic favorites to the sounds of Big Bands and Dixieland. Various-sized groups are organized to give students more experience in developing their improvisational abilities in many different representative jazz styles.
Small Ensembles Various brass, percussion and woodwind ensembles are formed each semester for the enjoyment of playing with a small group. These groups present concerts for the community on and off campus.

Instrumental Music Adjunct Faculty Position: Guitar/Bass Guitar Instructor The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate the potential for success in the following areas: Experience teaching academic college courses in applied guitar (classical, folk and popular), applied bass guitar and beginning and intermediate guitar classes. Experience with solo instrumental performance in guitar and bass guitar. Evidence of professional achievement and professional leadership. Will consider separate guitar and bass guitar instructors.
