Report on the RWTA Energy Efficiency Benchmarking Survey Results of the 2014-2015 Energy Efficiency Benchmarking Survey conducted by Anthony Frosh.

The survey was conducted over 12 months, from July 2014 to June 2015. There was a much better participation rate than during the previous year’s survey although many national members chose either not to report at all or to report only for their Victorian facilities. The result for “All States” reflects the average of all submissions and is an accurate reflection of the energy efficiency of the Australian cold storage industry.

As expected, the southern state of Victoria, with a much cooler and less humid climate, used the least amount of electricity per cubic meter. Victoria’s performance was also enhanced with the completion of a number of new, high efficiency cold storage only facilities.

The RWTA Energy Efficiency Subcommittee wishes to thank Anthony Frosh from Compact Research and Consulting for his hard work in chasing up submissions from a large number of companies and compiling the data during the last two years.

The energy efficiency results were also skewed with the busy meat freezing season in Queensland and the lack of blast freezing in many of the Victorian facilities built for storage only.

From July 2015, the quarterly Energy Efficiency Benchmarking Surveys will be conducted by the Global Cold Chain Alliance from the United States. This will ensure that all data collated will be at arm’s length and secure from competitors in the Australian cold storage industry.

The Renewable Energy Charges were sharply reduced with the removal of the carbon tax from the 1st July 2014.

WELCOME

FUNCTION

Horizon Cocktail Lounge Wednesday 26th August saw the arrival at the Stamford Grand of Delegates and their partners, with the conference proper commencing that evening with a “Welcome Function” held in the Horizons Cocktail Lounge from 6.30 pm until 11.00 pm and sponsored by Linde Material Handling. Themed as a Vegas Casino, on arrival delegates were issued with “$100 in Linde Casino Cash” and were offered drinks by two Vegas Show girls. The night provided an opportunity to meet and greet friends from both local and overseas companies, and catching up with some that you maybe hadn’t seen since last year’s conference.

Entertainment was provided by a three piece Jazz combo, along with roving magicians, and the Vegas layout of the cocktail lounge enabled delegates to play roulette, Texas poker and blackjack, with food platters provided prior to a full buffet dinner. For those not wishing to have a flutter there were quiet corners set up with leather chesterfield lounges where you could have a chat and catch up with old friends while enjoying your meal with a few drinks and the jazz band playing in the background.

A great night was had by all, culminating in the awarding of two prizes, one for the Best Casino Player, and the other for the Best Poker Player, followed by a raffle draw conducted by Steven Bonner – SA Branch Manager of our event sponsors Linde Material Handling, who provided a Linde “Children’s Sized Fork Lift. The final draw ended up with two lucky winners, taking home the children’s forklifts and we would like to thank Linde for their support and sponsorship of what everyone agreed was a very successful Welcome Function. of the Foenander Brothers Swing Band, playing jazz numbers, while they arranged their individual table seating layouts. It wasn’t long before entree’s were being served, and while we were enjoying our first course we had our first introduction to Mike & Steve Foenander who came on stage and broke our into a very spritely rendition of Frank Sinatra’s “New York - New York” this instantly had everyone’s attention, and gave us a mere taste of what we were in for with the rest of the night, “these guys rocked”. Our main course soon followed and with the

Foenander Brothers pumping out tunes from a bygone era it didn’t take long for the dance floor to be full with a very excited crowd. Music continued for the night moving from tunes in the Sinatra and Buble style, onto more up tempo numbers. After their second break the band returned to the stage launching into the ever popular “Mustang Sally” and we were really rocking …. Everyone loved the numbers performed by the boys and their band, so much so that they continued at our request well until midnight.

[ CONFERENCES ] PARTNER PROGRAM Maggie Beers’ Farm House & Jam Factory Visit Our day started at 10.00am when we were picked up from our hotel for a scenic 90 minute drive in a luxury coach to Nuriootpa and Maggie Beers’ Farmhouse. When we arrived we had the opportunity to wander around the shop and taste all the products; in fact this is the only place in Australia where you have the chance to see and try just about every product they make. We then moved into the “Cook and the Chef” kitchen, where Maggie and Simon filmed their TV series, for a Verjuice cooking demonstration by one of Maggies’ staff, and we were all given our own bottle of Verjuice to try. Following the cooking display a picnic basket lunch was provided based a menu selection that we had made on the bus trip there, so we were then able to sit and eat our lunch in the kitchen area.

Maggie Beer is an Australian culinary icon and her eponymous farm shop encourages visitors to wander around and take the opportunity to taste her range of products, lingering on for coffee and cake or sweetmeats; perhaps an ice-cream or a picnic basket with a glass of wine. Her famed picnic baskets, framed around Maggie’s variety of pates, are served with wood fired oven bread and paired with vintages from both Beer Brothers Wines and Pheasant Farm Wines. As vignerons of the Barossa for more than two decades, Maggie and her husband Colin offer a full range of wines exclusive to the cellar door. Desserts, which include a scoop of Maggie’s ice cream, are accompanied with seasonal fruits plucked directly from the orchard, while even the coffee, tea and milk is local; the shop brewing Barossa Coffee Roasters, local Scullery Made teas, Kernich’s of Greenock un-homogenised Jersey milk. Load up the basket with Maggie’s range, from quince paste to Kalamata olives using traditional preserving methods.

Seppeltsfield Jam Factory Visit On our trip home we stopped off at the Jam factory at Seppeltsfield Winery. The Jam Factory Seppeltsfield provide an extensive range of hand-crafted ceramics, glassware, jewellery and other collectables by leading Australian artists and designers including the extraordinary products made on-site in the Jam Factory studios. Purchases from their shops directly support individual artists as well as their unique exhibition and training programs. National Wine Centre of Australia

Each attendee received a pre-loaded Enomatic Card (to the value of $15.00), a two cheese platter and a self-guided tour around the National Wine Centre, viewing the open Cellar and Wine Discovery Journey, followed by a sumptuous two course lunch, before being transported back to our hotel.

CoR & RWTA Conference The recent RWTA conference in Adelaide was a great event with lots of topics covered, but it was not all about theory there was a lot of “How to” in the sessions. From discussions at the conference I found many people had learned a lot from each speaker or had been stimulated into acting upon what was heard. I presented a session on Chain of Responsibility with my colleague Maurice, Maurice brings an interesting perspective to CoR. As Maurice is a lawyer he sees it from pure black letter law. So how does this impact on you? I tell the CoR compliance issue from an operator’s perspective and I am often accused of being all doom and gloom, however, if you hear it from a legal perspective I am the eternal optimist! Therefore the upshot of all of this is that this CoR stuff is real and getting tougher. So now that you are feeling fully inspired about what you need to be doing in terms of CoR, did you notice Maurice sneak in another component of transport compliance? Did you see the reference to the Road Safety Remuneration Tribunal (RSRT)? So what is it you ask? Just like CoR and in fact an adjunct to road safety the RSRT is about ensuring that all those engaged in transport are fairly remunerated. Is the RSRT just a guide? No, not at all, although the orders handed down on 27th August 2015 are only “draft” they are the pre-cursor to the mandatory rules which will become law on 1st of January 2016. And will cover all supply chain contracts, including Consignor, Consignee, contracted driver, body corporates etc etc…. sound familiar? Yes the same coverage as CoR. Having said that the initial orders will not affect all aspects of the transport industry. There are two initial targets: 1. Transport services wholly or substantially of goods for sale or hire by a supermarket 2. Any long distance transport as deemed by Road Transport (Long Distance Operations) Award 2010 In the area of refrigerated warehousing and transport it’s fair to say this will form a major part of day to day business for most, as such it needs some attention. Let us examine the basics of RSRT. It’s intent and design is to support the direction of CoR and ensure that road 26  OCTOBER 2015  I  COLDºRUNNING

safety is not compromised due to

1. Inappropriate contracts and or 2. Contract payments. As such it will be looking for legal supply chain contractors and will be requiring businesses to develop and check supply chain contracts. The use of the term “supply chain contract” has been quite deliberate in that although “Party A” may have a contract with ‘Party B” to supply goods FIS, thus meaning that the cartage is technically free. However, we all know this is a misnomer as someone is paying for the freight. As such you may think you escape any involvement with the rates that are being paid for cartage by having a FIS Contract. But the use of the terminology “Supply Chain Contract” is specific and means that when calculating what is fair in such a contract all the delivery components have been taken into consideration. This could include such things as delivery schedules, time slots, on site delays, demurrage, packing, restraint etc. so basically all the aspects of CoR. On top of this is also the rate, in that what is being paid to carry the freight. Freight costs, although maybe hidden into product pricing is still a major issue and have all parties ensured that the remuneration paid to a driver is appropriate and meets a minimum standard. Right here you are probably saying “what would I know about the minimum acceptable rate a driver should be paid?” RSRT have that covered also, they have developed a calculator to help you out. The calculator is basic but effective and sets out rate per hour and kilometres based on various vehicle configurations. Let’s look at a scenario. You have been buying product “X” from a supplier for some time at a set price of say $500 per unit, the freight charge was always $100 per unit. You need to get better pricing from the supplier and set about some robust negotiation to get the unit price down to $400. This meets with very strong resistance and there is no way the supplier drop the unit rate to $400 and the negotiations end and the supply of the product is now jeopardy. Later the supplier comes back with a suggestion that they could supply the product at $525 per unit including delivery. This is not a bad result and the $510 is accepted. Here we have a supply chain contract for FIS. Question; if the supplier was so adamant about not

dropping the unit rate below $525 and then comes back with a FIS rate of $525, what physically has changed to allow them to do that? At this point alarm bells should be ringing loud and hard. If you just accept the FIS rate, you may be contravening RSRT in that it maybe the transport has been pressured into a reduced cost. As such you need to do some due diligence on the new “supply chain contract”. Questions to ask: 1. Has the manufacturing cost on the item been reduced? 2. Has the profit margin on the item been reduced? 3. Are there changes to delivered volumes that will allow a reduced total delivery cost? 4.

Has a new cheaper carrier been appointed and any new rate struck between manufacturer and carrier been checked against RSRT Calculator?

If we look at the questions 2 relate to manufacturing and 2 relate to transport, from an RSRT perspective the first two are commercial between supplier and buyer and nothing to do with RSRT. The other two are transport operational and are of concern to the RSRT. Due Diligence needs to be completed to make sure that the change is cost is not due to pressure on a carrier. In summary, you need to review all Supply Chain Contracts prior to 1st January 2016 and reasonable steps of Due Diligence to ensure that any component of that contract does not contravene RSRT requirements. Colby Delivers High-Density Storage to Australian DC’s With New Push-Back Pallet Racking Solution

Dematic has launched a new high-density storage solution for warehouse operations - Colby PushBack Pallet Racking. Colby Push-Back Pallet Racking provides high-density storage where pallets are stored up to six pallets deep. Using a forklift, pallets are pushed back on carts on inclined rails mounted inside the racking. As a pallet is withdrawn, the cart holding a pallet behind automatically slides forward to the front position. Push-Back Pallet Racking is a great alternative to double-deep or drive-in racking because it makes great use of space, while still allowing fast and easy access to stock. The system operates on a First In Last Out (FILO) basis. Colby’s new racking is ideal for bulk storage, order consolidation, and despatch. Dematic’s structural engineers have designed the system with safety, integrity, and reliability in mind. All carts are of rigid frame construction and run on large wheel bearings for smooth performance. The rails enclose the wheels, preventing any dislodgement of the carts and keeping the running surface free of debris. Stopper plates locate the pallets securely on all carts. “We understand that safety and optimal equipment lifespan is a key focus for warehouse operators and that’s why we are committed to developing the best products possible,” said Tony Woodlock, Director Storage Equipment, Dematic. Colby’s Push-Back Pallet Racking includes all the superior features of Colby’s selective racking: the diamond-slot profile, which provides a stronger and more efficient interlock between upright and beam; front and rear upright protectors to avoid damage; and rack end protection for worker safety.

[ MEMBER NEWS ] The high costs of land, labour and energy are driving the increased use of space and costefficient Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (ASRS) for the distribution of foodstuffs and healthcare products requiring refrigeration. Dematic’s Manager Industry Logistics, David Rubie, outlines 10 ways ASRS reduces costs and improves cold chain performance. 1. Smaller building footprint with optimised use of the storage cube High bay ASRS effectively use the available footprint in a distribution centre (DC). With aisles in an ASRS also typically requiring up to less than a third of the space compared to those in conventional pallet storage systems, ASRS significantly reduce the total floorspace required to store a comparable number of pallets, typically by 25% or more, depending on the height of the system. 2. Significant on-going energy savings With ASRS enabling more pallets to be stored in a smaller cubic area, they reduce on-going refrigeration energy operating costs. The smaller surface area of ASRS cold stores also reduces the impact of thermal transfer through the walls and roof area, further reducing energy consumption. There is also limited lighting requirements within ASRS, and no need for large doors to be constantly opening and closing for forklift access, further reducing energy consumption. When evaluating the cost-effectiveness of ASRS in cold stores or freezers, it is important to factor in the continuing rise of energy costs over the system’s anticipated operational lifespan. 3. No need to work in harsh environments Employee turnover in cold store and freezer environments is typically higher than in conventional warehousing. With all pallet handling within ASRS cold stores and freezers handled automatically, and the use of integrated infeed/outfeed pallet conveyors, operational staff are not required to work in harsh cold store or freezer 28  OCTOBER 2015  I  COLDºRUNNING

environments, with stock put-away and retrieval, order fulfilment, load consolidation and shipping taking place in ambient temperatures. Staff working in freezers are also required to take regular breaks from working in sub-zero conditions, reducing productivity and increasing operating costs. 4. Reduced on-going product and equipment damage By eliminating the need for manually operated forklifts, accidental damage to products, racks, freezer doors and other equipment is eliminated. 5. Occupational health and safety benefits With no operational staff permitted within the ASRS warehouse, safety issues associated with the use of manually operated forklifts and pallet trucks are eliminated. 6. Guaranteed inventory location accuracy and inventory security Accurate, real-time computer control of inventory locations in ASRS cold stores and freezers eliminates stock putaway errors that can occur in manual operations. Furthermore, guaranteed inventory accuracy is a desirable selling feature for third party logistics (3PL) cold storage providers. With ASRS providing fully automated operation, another benefit is significantly improved inventory security, which greatly reduces the potential for stock pilferage/shrinkage. 7. Error-free order picking and FIFO stock rotation Manually staffed cold storage DCs can experience several picking errors every day. Accurate inventory location management in ASRS and FIFO (first-

in, first-out) inventory rotation ensures order accuracy and product freshness by eliminating the potential for costly to rectify picking errors. 8. Control of “quarantined” products With ASRS, inventory that is quarantined for whatever reason is electronically locked-in and not available for picking. 9. Enhanced product quality Within ASRS, pallets in cold stores and freezers are optimally spaced allowing chilled air to circulate adequately to ensure product quality is maintained at all times. 10. Customer service excellence Customers expect accurate orders and even the occasional error can badly damage the cold storage provider’s reputation and relationship with their customer.

Cold chain growth in Asia Pacific

According to a recent report from Markets and Markets, the global cold chain is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.2% between now and 2017, with the Asia Pacific region expected to constitute 22% of the frozen food market by 2017, if it continues to grow at the projected CAGR of 17%. The increased popularity of chilled and frozen foods in Asia Pacific is a reflection of changing food preferences as consumers become more affluent, and that the infrastructure to support cold chain operations in the region is expanding. In China, for example, the frozen food market grew from nearly US$10 billion in 2007 to an estimated US$16 billion in 2012.

[ MEMBER NEWS ] The growth of the cold chain sector is largely attributed to globalisation, which enables the import and export of perishable foods, technology advances in cold chain storage and transport, and growing acceptance of frozen foods amongst consumers. Chilled products account for the largest share globally, as most fruits and vegetables are stored and transported through this chain, with the frozen food market also expected to enjoy substantial growth for the next five years. Dematic has implemented a number of cold chain logistics solutions in Asia Pacific in recent years, and is currently in the process of implementing major chilled and frozen DCs in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand, where it is commissioning its largest single chilled and frozen food ASRS system in the region, which will house 25,000 pallets stored to a height of 30m.

Chilled and frozen case buffer storage, picking and despatch processing

In addition to ASRS pallet handling systems, Dematic has also developed a high-performance, accurate and cost-effective automated case storage, picking and despatch processing solution for chilled and frozen goods. Based on Dematic’s highly successful Multishuttle ASRS, the solution – which has been deployed by food processors, distributors and retailers in refrigerated environments in Europe and North America – provides an extensive range of advantages over manual distribution and despatch. Multishuttle systems can be linked to conveyors, with cartons conveyed directly to order consolidation areas or direct into shipping containers. Multishuttle systems can also be linked to automated palletisers, which can further reduce the costs, errors and damage associated with manual handling. The Multishuttle system solution greatly reduces the number of potential occupational health and safety (OH&S) hazards associated with the manual handling of heavy cartons, and reduces errors associated with incorrect picking. Through Dematic’s iQ performance optimising software, the Multishuttle systems provide full track and trace capabilities for every single carton of every individual SKU.

Dematic Multishuttle system advantages over cranebased solutions

• Better space efficiency – One of the key advantages Multishuttle offers compared to crane-based systems is that Multishuttle systems can be designed to fit within virtually any space, even unused headroom. Multishuttle systems also utilise the available cube more efficiently providing a higher density, more cost-effective case storage solution in chilled or frozen environments. • Unlimited order assembly flexibility – Multishuttle systems provide immediate access to each individual carton and the SKU is automatically delivered to operations or further automation. No manual interaction is required. • Increased system throughput capacity –Multishuttle systems can pick multiple SKUs concurrently within a single aisle, increasing system throughput and improving access to stock required for orders. • Accurate SKU location mapping – The location of every carton within a Multishuttle system is always known and can be queried in real-time by operations via Dematic’s integrated iQ software. • Improved system redundancy – Multishuttle systems provide the highest level of system redundancy possible. If one Multishuttle fails for any reason, the remainder of the Multishuttles continue to operate independently. • Minimal customisation – A key advantage of Multishuttle systems is that they require minimal customisation, reducing costs and enabling rapid installation and start-up. All of the hardware including storage systems, Multishuttles and system software is pre-configured. • Automated despatch labelling – Fully automated carton shipping labelling upon retrieval from the Multishuttle system can be integrated. • Optimised operational flexibility – Multishuttle systems can operate around the clock, every day of the week, providing the ultimate in operational flexibility. When not required for order processing, the Multishuttle system undertakes any necessary housekeeping processes, retrieving and reslotting products in ‘golden zones’ close to the front of the system to enable faster, more efficient retrieval of high volume SKUs.

• A safer workplace – Multishuttle systems significantly reduce the need for manual handling of heavy cartons or totes, reducing the potential for manual handling injuries. They also significantly reduce the need for pallet truck and forklift movements, further improving workplace safety. • A modular, scalable, flexible solution – Multishuttle systems can be easily scaled up with the addition of extra aisles or by increasing the height or length of the system, providing future flexibility and reducing initial investment, and building/leasing costs. • Rapid return on investment – The combination of productivity savings, reduced errors, lower building/leasing and operating costs, and the reduction of losttime injuries all contribute to a rapid ROI.

Summary

With the range of fresh produce that requires refrigeration and the on-going growth of the market for frozen convenience meals and foodstuffs, the demand for refrigerated storage is growing rapidly. DCs that are optimised through the use of automated storage and handling technologies will be better positioned to cost-effectively meet this demand, and deliver high levels of customer service. ASRS and Multishuttle systems provide competitive advantage by reducing labour touches and improving productivity, increasing service levels, minimising OH&S risks and enhancing order processing flexibility, while delivering comprehensive tracking, visibility and operational management capabilities. And ASRS and Multishuttle systems achieve this using significantly less space compared to conventional storage solutions. ASRS and Multishuttle systems also allows businesses to review their cold supply chain networks and identify where they can consolidate refrigerated storage and distribution to reduce total supply chain costs and deliver superior operational capabilities. With the cost of automation falling significantly in recent years, the business case and ROI for ASRS and Multishuttle systems has never been better. THE IMPACT OF THE COLD CHAIN

Consider again our banana. India grows 28 percent of the world’s crop and is the top producing nation in the world.16 However, like many rapidly developing countries, India does not yet have an extensive or mature cold chain. Of the 104 million metric tons of perishables transported among cities throughout India, only 4 million are transported in refrigerated vehicles, and that’s mostly milk.17 India’s 6,000 cold storage units accommodate only about 11 percent of the country’s crops, most of this potatoes.18 Without temperature control, observers believe that India loses 20 to 50 percent of its total production of fruits and vegetables each year.19 That makes local delivery of a highly perishable fruit like bananas wasteful, and export simply impossible. Of India’s 28 percent share of the world’s production, the country exports less than 1 percent.20 Observers believe that with an advanced cold chain, India could grow its banana exports from 3,000 to 190,000 containers. This would benefit 34,600 smallholder farmers.21 Reducing losses of this especially nutritious food could alternatively reduce hidden hunger and ensure food security for the country’s growing population. The reach and impact of the modern cold chain are extraordinary but terribly uneven. In the United States, 70 percent of all the food consumed each year passes through this seamless refrigerated network.22 In a rapidly developing nation like China, equivalent cold chain coverage is 25 percent for beef and 5 percent for produce.23 In parts of the world like sub-Saharan Africa, the installation of basic cold chain 32  OCTOBER 2015  I  COLDºRUNNING

practices is hindered by poor roads and infrastructure. Some 2.6 billion people worldwide who lack affordable and reliable energy services are simply beyond a functioning cold chain.24 Rapid urbanization represents an additional complicating factor. As the world’s population migrates to cities, the distance between food production and consumption grows. Dependence on an effective cold chain becomes ever greater. India is investing aggressively in refrigerated warehouses and transport. One example is Coldex Logistics, a leading cold storage transport company based in the historic city of Gwalior, some 200 miles south of Delhi. Coldex was founded as a dry storage trucking company and has evolved over the last decade to support the cold chain needs of a variety of international restaurant brands and confectionery companies operating in India.25 “We invested in the cold chain to help our customers reach out to their customers,” says Managing Director Gaurav Jain. “While doing so we have enabled the larger aspect of controlling wastage by prolonging the shelf life of raw and processed food.” Coldex is now expanding beyond transport to warehouses, adopting increasingly sophisticated IT systems, all with an eye toward managing every link in the cold chain. “And very clearly that’s the path a developing nation like India is taking to eradicate food waste and thus hunger and poverty,” adds Mr. Jain. “We feel this can only be done by efficient and functional integrated supply chains—from farm to fork.”26 Likewise, China is addressing its need for a modern cold chain. The Chinese grocery market exceeds $1 trillion, the largest on Earth. Yet most fruits and vegetables grown in the country are transported in open trucks, resulting

in losses that can exceed 40 percent.27 As China adjusts to meet the needs of its growing urban middle class, the country’s cold chain logistics industry is expected to grow at 25 percent annually. The first set of investments is being made in cold warehouses. Once there is a place to store perishables, China will invest in refrigerated trucks.28 In Latin America, supermarkets have grown segment share from as low as 10 percent to a current 60 percent by making massive investments in the cold chain.29 Globally, the total capacity of refrigerated warehouses grew 20 percent to 552 million cubic meters between 2012 and 2014.30 India is the world leader with 131 million cubic meters, followed by the U.S. with 115 and China with 76. Compared with the population, however, the U.S. has 360 cubic meters of refrigerated storage capacity for every 1,000 inhabitants while India has 102 and China 54.31 Were China and India to expand cold chain intensity to U.S. levels, global refrigerated warehouses would grow from 552 million cubic feet to 1.3 billion. New Book Highlights the Hidden Connection Between Food Waste, Hunger and Climate Change! If food waste were a country, it would be the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases behind China and the United States. Yet, the connection between food waste and climate change is often missing. UTC Building & Industrial Systems has released a new book to connect the issues of hunger, resource conservation and climate change mitigation. UTC Building & Industrial Systems is the world’s largest provider of building technologies, and is a unit of United Technologies Corp. As a world leader in cold chain technologies that advance the global food supply chain, Carrier, a unit of UTC Building & Industrial Systems, has a unique perspective on the global food system, witnessing the stunning amount of food wasted globally. In an effort to elevate global awareness of this issue, John Mandyck, chief sustainability officer, UTC Building & Industrial Systems, and Eric Schultz, former chairman and CEO of Sensitech, a United Technologies company specializing in cold chain monitoring and visibility, co-authored a 182-page paperback book, called Food Foolish: The Hidden Connection Between Food Waste, Hunger and Climate Change, which calls attention to the extraordinary social and environmental opportunities created by wasting less food. “Hunger, food security, climate emissions and water shortages are anything but foolish topics,” said Mandyck. “The way we systematically waste food in the face of these challenges, however, is one of humankind’s unintended but most foolish practices. We hope this book

will be a catalyst for a much needed connected global dialogue on an issue that we believe is essential to the sustainability of the planet.” One-third or more of the food we produce each year is never eaten. Meanwhile, more than 800 million people – a population equivalent to the United States and European Union combined – are chronically hungry. Food waste also has a devastating environmental impact. The embodied carbon dioxide emissions in food waste alone represent 3.3 billion metric tons. That’s the energy used to produce food that’s never eaten, including fuel for tractors used for planting and harvest, electricity for water pumps in the field and the power for processing and packaging facilities. In addition to greenhouse gas emissions, the water used to grow the food we throw away is greater than the water used by any single nation on the planet. “The very foods we need to address global nutrition and meet consumer demand are the most water-intensive and require the greatest protection along the supply chain,” said Schultz. “Their loss and waste not only intensifies hunger, but destroys our freshwater resources.” The impacts of food waste are magnified by our growing planet. The world’s population is expected to grow by another 2 billion people by 2050, with the added challenge of feeding more. “We already produce enough food to feed 10 billion people – everyone today and those expected by 2050,” said Mandyck. “We must implement readily available strategies to avoid food loss and extend food supplies – including energy efficient, sustainable and affordable technologies that better preserve food during transport and distribution, improved food safety standards and a change in consumer behavior. When we waste less, we feed more. Without action, the low-hanging fruit for reducing climate change will continue to literally rot before our eyes.”

Food Foolish was co-written by Mandyck and Schultz and features forewords from Philippe Cousteau, founder of EarthEcho International and Emmy-nominated television host, and Barton Seaver, explorer with National Geographic and director of the Healthy and Sustainable Food Program at the Center for Health and the Global Environment at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. To order a copy of Food Foolish, visit www.amazon.com or www.FoodFoolishBook.com. Proceeds from the book will be donated to food charities. How Airflow Management in Reefer Trailers Minimizes Cold Chain Losses The International Refrigerated Transportation Association (IRTA), a core partner of the Global Cold Chain Alliance (GCCA), recently received this question from a delegation from Eastern Europe: “Why does airflow in reefer trailers flow clockwise and airflow in reefer containers flow counter clockwise?” Dr. Patrick Brecht, a member of the World Food Logistics Organization (WFLO) Scientific Advisory Council responded. “The airflow answer is not simply clockwise vs counter clockwise,” said Dr. Brecht. “The superior airflow management system is vertical airflow (i.e., reefer container) and the less effective airflow system is horizontal airflow (i.e., reefer trailer).” Bottom air delivery systems (also known as “reverse air flow”) are substantially better with regard to temperature management of the chilled produce than horizontal airflow systems. In fact, international transportation companies ultimately converted their entire reefer container fleets from horizontal airflow to vertical air flow. A primary reason for improved temperature management with the

vertical airflow system is that the reefer container’s “T” floor is pressurized (to a certain degree like a forced air cooler) and the conditioned air is then forced a short distance up and through the cargo vertically from the “T” floor to the top of the load and back to the reefer unit. In a properly stowed ocean refrigerated container, conditioned air is delivered from the reefer unit located on the front (“nose”) of the reefer container, along the floor, through the “T” channels, and up vertically through the cargo so that the air is driven around and through the load to maintain produce temperatures. In contrast, reefer trailers are equipped with a top air delivery unit, which means that the air is delivered from the reefer unit to the cargo space via a duct extension and an air delivery chute that is attached to the trailer’s ceiling. The air returns horizontally from the cargo space through a front bulkhead and back to the refrigeration unit. The horizontal airflow system for reefer truck trailers results in less optimal chilled produce temperature management because (in part) the conditioned air moves “passively”

a long distance (picking up heat along the way) from the rear of the load to the front bulkhead. It should be noted that the use of bottom air flow systems for reefer trailers has been considered not practical due in part to the added trailer weight from the “T” floor. The end result is superior chilled cargo (i.e., fresh produce etc.) temperature management with reefer containers due in part to the pressurized vertical airflow (assuming of course that the cargo is stowed correctly in the reefer container!). For further guidance concerning reefer trailers and reefer containers, please refer to these additional publication coauthored by Dr. Brecht: ‘Marine container transport of chilled perishable produce’ (Univ. of Calif. Div. of Agri. & Nat. Res. Pub. No. 21595) and ‘Refrigerated trailer transport of perishable products’ (Univ. of Calif. Div. of Agri. & Nat. Res. Pub. No. 21614). This article was posted in the GCCA Cold Connection under Transportation & Logistics and tagged airflow management, reefer containers, Scientific Advisory Council on September 22, 2015 by Laura Poko.

Carrier Transicold pursues natural refrigerant technology October 6, 2015 by Dean Stiles

Athens, Georgia, US: Carrier Transicold has set its sights on natural refrigerant technology that surpasses current alternatives in terms of reducing environmental impact. The move voluntarily aligns Carrier with the US Environmental Protection Agency’s latest and more stringent refrigerant change listing for other commercial, non-transport refrigeration systems. As an alternative to R-404A used in truck and trailer refrigeration units, Carrier Transicold is building on its expertise with the natural refrigerant carbon dioxide, which has a significantly lower global warming potential than R-404A and other proposed synthetic replacements. Truck and trailer refrigeration units in North America use R-404A, one of a number of hydrofluorcarbon (HFC) refrigerants for which the EPA, through its Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) program announcement, established new restrictions in other applications, such as stationary commercial refrigeration systems. “Carrier Transicold offers customers some of the most environmentally sustainable refrigeration systems,” said David Appel, president, Carrier Transicold & Refrigeration Systems. “We are committed to expanding our proven, environmentally responsible natural refrigerant systems for road transport. Specifically, we are building on our expertise with the natural refrigerant carbon dioxide (CO2), which has a significantly lower global warming potential (GWP) than current synthetic

refrigerants and their alternates.” Effective this year, the European Union’s new F-Gas regulation (EU517/2014) aggressively ramps down the use of high GWP HFC refrigerants. As an option to the HFC R-404A for truck and trailer systems in Europe, Carrier Transicold and other transport refrigeration equipment providers now offer the refrigerant R-452A, a three-component blend that includes a hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) and has a GWP about 45 percent lower than R-404A. However, R-452A is awaiting required SNAP approval by EPA for use in the United States. R-452A, if approved by EPA, could become an interim option for U.S. truck and trailer customers seeking more environmentally responsible refrigerants. “Carrier Transicold’s greater goal for transport refrigeration significantly surpasses the benefits of R-452A,” Appel said. “The natural refrigerant CO2 is cost-effective, readily available worldwide and has a GWP of only 1, which is roughly 2,000 times better than R-452A (GWP 2,140) and 4,000 times better than R-404A (GWP 3,922).” Carrier has successfully applied CO2 refrigerant in both stationary commercial refrigeration and marine transport applications. Since its introduction in 2004, more than 1,600 supermarkets across Europe have adopted Carrier’s CO2OLtec® commercial refrigeration system, which uses CO2 refrigerant. In 2013, Carrier Transicold commercially launched the revolutionary NaturaLINE® unit, the world’s first marine container refrigeration system using CO2 refrigerant, which can lower carbon emissions by 28 percent compared to previous systems. The NaturaLINE unit is available to shipping lines and container leasing companies worldwide. To help facilitate greater adoption of CO2 as a refrigerant in the United States, Carrier successfully petitioned the EPA to approve the low global warming refrigerant for transport refrigeration. The agency now lists CO2 as ‘acceptable’ for new transport refrigeration applications. “With its GWP of one, CO2 is the basis for calculating the GWP of all other refrigerants,” said Appel. “It serves as the benchmark for environmental sustainability, which is what Carrier Transicold continues to relentlessly pursue.” COLDºRUNNING  I  OCTOBER 2015  35

“Yearbook”, highlighting both the RWTA and a number of our members. We have arranged for all of this at no cost to us, or to any of you, our members , as Business Review Australia derive their revenue from companies wanting to be associated with the RWTA and our membership. Business Review Australia have a very low key system by which an announcement is sent out to the companies you work closely with offering a chance for them to share in the project by way of a targeted advertisement which would appear in all facets of the promotion. Rob can explain more about that, but we hope you agree this is an excellent opportunity to draw attention to the RWTA, our values, and goals for the future. Business Review Australia’s objective in this project, is to promote our agenda, and highlight best practice operations from amongst you our members, including both the large International and National companies, right down to our smaller family owned companies. Again, there is no cost to you for this feature, or any of the subsequent marketing materials, and we believe this will be an excellent vehicle for promoting all the RWTA does, along with the companies responsible in the Australian Cold Chain. 2008 Frank Vale Winner Lauren Cavasin PROMOTED TO OPERATION’S MANAGER I started with Bidvest Brisbane in 2001 as a nightshift Despatch Clerk. I worked in this role for almost four years learning all aspects of the Night Distribution. I was asked to step into the Fleet Maintenance side of the business when we had been left shorthanded and soon received the promotion to Fleet Maintenance Coordinator for the Brisbane site. This was no mean feat as we have a large fleet of trucks and vans along with the Rep cars and all the building, plant equipment and machinery to look after.

After 2 years in this role I slowly moved away from directly running the Maintenance to overseeing the Maintenance and began to run the Distribution section of Bidvest, over the next 2 years I took every opportunity to achieve as much education as I could, I attended many different courses offered to me by Bidvest through the Australian Institute of Management all of which have assisted me in achieving all I have to date. In 2006 I was promoted to Distribution Supervisor and became the first female to be running one of the largest Distribution sections for Bidvest. It has not been an easy path but I have always pushed forward to continually set and achieve goals both personally and professionally. In 2008 I completed my Diploma in Logistics Management and soon after received my promotion to Distribution Manager. I continued to thrive in the role for the next 7 Years, in that time I made sure I completed as much study and took every opportunity available to me. I completed my WHS Cert IV and Fire Safety Advisor Certification. I enjoy what I do and for some reason love the day to day heartache of solving delivery issues, customer issues, truck and van maintenance and looking after my immediate 50 staff members plus the 21 Contractor Drivers and the remainder of the 200+ warehouse staff that I manage. A highlight of my career was being nominated for the Frank Vale award in 2008. I won the QLD Division and then went on to present a speech to approximately 350 delegates in the

Hunter Valley. I won the Frank Vale Award for 2008 and from this won a trip to Palm Springs USA and again presented to approximately 500+ Cold Chain Representatives from all over the world and received a Standing Ovation for my efforts. Also I was nominated in 2013 for a Distinguished Service Award for Bidvest and was lucky enough to travel to South Africa with the Company and attend the Gala Awards night and also spend some time enjoying and exploring the magnificent Country on Safari. In October 2015 I was promoted to Operations Manager for Bidvest Brisbane which is no mean feat and I am extremely excited to have the opportunity to show the company that they have made the right decision. It just goes to show that if you are willing to go the extra mile, to put in a little more than required or simply that you have a thirst for knowledge in your area, you can achieve anything you put your mind to because I assure you I never thought when I first started with Bidvest 13 years ago that I would have accomplished the things that I have. As a woman in a male orientated workforce it can be tough however with integrity, loyalty and hard work anything can be achieved. I have certainly paved my way with determination and hard work and it can sincerely happen for anyone who is willing to put in the hard yards. Bidvest have been extremely supportive and always willing to assist me in achieving my goals and I thank them for their continual support and encouragement.

CROWNE PLAZA RESORT, HUNTER VALLEY NSW

I would like to start by thanking the RWTA for there outstanding support through out the whole Frank Vale Award process.

I’d like to begin with the importance this award can mean to not only the staff member you nominate but the global recognition it can bring to your company. Being nominated for the FVA was just the beginning of an amazing and eye opening journey for me, not only professionally but personally as well.

The process for the FVA is one of learning and progression. As a nominee for QLD I was put through my paces firstly being interviewed by a select panel from the RWTA which enabled me to show off my knowledge of the warehouse in which I worked and also the area in which I specialized. Not long after this process I received a call in regards to the FVA and was informed that I had been awarded the winner for the QLD division.

The wonderful feeling of being acknowledged by your workplace is by far the best part of the whole experience. To know that they think that highly of you means so much more than you could imagine. Right there win or lose you immediately have been noticed in a way that makes you feel you are a valuable part of the team at your work place.

With this sorted it was it was time to get ready for the conference and prepare myself for the next grilling! A presentation and another set of gruelling questions were the next criteria, this time by the RWTA panel of judges at the conference in the Hunter Valley. The next few months was spent preparing myself for the conference, which was held in the beautiful Hunter Valley and was exceptionally organised by the RWTA.

All of the State winners were made to feel very welcome by all of the attending RWTA members and guests.

It was now that the panic, sick feeling and trembling began. I sat and watched the other state representatives deliver their presentations which I might add were all very well done. The calibre of the state finalists was outstanding proving my point again that there are young people in our industry wanting to make a difference.

2008 Frank Vale Award at the Lauren Cavasin (Distribution Manager) Bidvest, receiving the Valley NSW. 2008 RWTA Conference & Expo at Crowne Plaza Resort, Hunter Group of Companies, Lauren From Left to Right: Martin Porter (Managing Director) Retracom Chairman Cavasin (Distribution Manager) Bidvest, and Peter Quinn - RWTA

We all got through it though and I must say once up there I felt like I was a respected part of the FVA and that I was really being listened to. It helped that I got a few laughs!!

Once that was over I really relaxed, my knees stopped shaking and the butterflies dissipated but then came the interrogation from the judging panel. It was surprisingly relaxed and I seemed to be at ease with the questions they were asking. Then came the waiting period until the Gala dinner where they announced the winner for the 2009 FVA. Each state finalist was extremely worthy of this title and I would not have wanted to be on the judging panel.

We were all called up and the winner was announced, they called my name and it was awesome! I accepted graciously and the night seemed to end before it had begun. We danced and laughed it was a night I will remember forever!

Back at my workplace the staff and management were buzzing, it was a win not only for me but for Bidvest as well, and just when I thought it was done and dusted, I started preparation for the USA trip. Which was graciously paid for by Retrocom as part of the prize. Again I was prepping for another speech and psyching myself up to represent, Australia, the RWTA and Bidvest at the WFLO convention in Palm Springs! It was the most exciting thing I had ever achieved. Winning boosted my confidence, my professionalism and gave me opportunities I’d never thought possible.

I got to mix with Global Cold Chain representatives and I met some of the most influential members of the WFLO and the IARW. I got to network with people I would never have met if not for the FVA. Some of the people I met I still remain in contact with and will always be in debt for their hospitality. I was given a standing ovation for my speech and was made to feel like the centre of all things COLD!

Winning this award had made me feel like a superstar within the industry and allowed me to show the Cold Logistics of Australia and the world that I love what I do and that there are young people out there who want to make a difference and the FVA is the perfect way to motivate your staff and give them a voice. The whole experience has given me a new outlook; it has enhanced my confidence and self worth. I am happier within myself for the achievement I have gained. My workplace has a high level of respect for me and knows that they have a special kind of person within their management team. The FVA has opened doors for me and given me options; it has made me a highly regarded member of the Cold Logistic Industry. Nominate one of your own so that they too can have these same opportunities. You never know it could be them standing here next year, representing your company and our industry.

RWTA (Victorian Division) Adapt-A-Lift Hyster Golf Day Friday 9 Oct 2015 The 2015 RWTA / Adapt-A-Lift Hyster golf day was played at the magnificent Eagle Ridge Golf Club on the Mornington Peninsula. A warm 24°C spring morning had 120 players tee off in a shotgun start at the annual RWTA Victorian Golf event. The course was picture perfect with excellent playing conditions. Once again the staff at Eagle Ridge led by Wayne Lucas (General Manager & Jason Glanz (Golf Operations Manager) welcomed and treated us as old friends, including running out the red carpet as players arrived at the course. The feedback from those playing on the day was terrific; if word of mouth is anything to go by, a good time was had by all. The team at Eagle Ridge ensured everyone was looked after both on and off the course. Of course these days are never possible without the generous support of sponsors and we sincerely thank the following companies for their generosity. Adapt-A-Lift
