Dear Friends, The past year was nothing short of exciting for Roslindale. We were named one of the Best Places to Live by Boston Magazine; had unprecedented media coverage from the likes of TV Diner, Chronicle, The Boston Globe and our local papers; and were once again featured nation-wide for Small Business Saturday. A lurry of new retail shops have opened their doors in our district, making Roslindale not only a destination but a place to spend the day, with 30 events year-round and dozens of retail locations to explore. 2011 was also a year of progress and innovation with new projects like the Summer Stroll series, featuring concerts in the park and promotions throughout the district; and the positive movement on the Roslindale Substation, a joint venture with Historic Boston, Incorporated. We experienced record levels of participation, with nearly 200 volunteers donating over 3,000 hours of service to the organization. The dedication of the volunteer-board boasted a steep $6,100 in contributions for the organization, in addition to the $20,000 brought in by resident and business supporters. Karen Kirchoff was honored as Volunteer of the Year, for her work spearheading the implementation of the organic lawn solution in Adams Park, and Tony’s Market received the award for Business of the Year for the longstanding support and participation in the community. It is through the tireless efforts of our volunteers, supporters and business community that we are able to achieve so much. As we close out the term on our strategic plan, we will begin to evaluate our progress, seek input from the community and continue to pursue initiatives that make Roslindale a great place to live, work, eat and thrive. Join us as we move into the next chapter for Roslindale and our organization! It is through a community-wide effort that we are able to achieve so much. Thank you for your ongoing support! Steve Gag Stephanie Cave President Executive Director Board of Directors

Economic Development

Investment in our Community

In 2011, we welcomed seven new businesses into the district, and provided direct assistance to ive businesses during their irst year. Overall, Roslindale Village saw an increase of 30 net new jobs and a vacancy rate of less than 3% in 2011. Over 125 referrals or direct assistance was provided to business owners for technical assistance resources including designs, marketing, legal and permitting issues and inancing. Much of this success is due to the efforts of the RVMS Economic Development Committee, which conducted targeted outreach promoting Roslindale to potential new businesses, providing information and assistance to twelve prospective businesses considering Roslindale as a location. In an effort to bolster the important element of local investment in our district, a homeowner outreach initiative was also implemented this year. In order to better support foot traf ic in our district, RVMS invested $3,100 to secure a lease for MBTA parking lot on Saturdays during the Farmers’ Market season, alleviating parking congestion in Roslindale Village during peak times. In November, RVMS and Historic Boston, Inc. submitted a joint proposal to the Boston Redevelopment Authority for Rendering of Roslindale Substation, photo courtesy of the revitalized substation to Taylor & Burns host communal events, including a Winter Farmers’ Market and Catered-Event Center, and are now awaiting approval to advance to the next planning stage.

Business Networking

In April, RVMS hosted a networking breakfast workshop attended by more than 25 business owners and other community members, which focused on “Business Financing in Uncertain Times.” Given the challenging economic climate, the goal of the gathering was to discuss lending options for small businesses. A panel of experts from The Cooperative Bank, ACCION USA and local resident and retired business owner, Odessa Piper, offered a wide range of insight on inancing options to attendees.

“Roslindale Village Main Street was an excellent resource to the Marla’s Obsession team. We irst visited the Main Street Of ice during our initial search for a retail space in Roslindale. They kept in touch with us and kept us abreast of all the vacant retail spaces. The organization was very helpful in suggesting that we speak with other business owners to get a feel for the business district and how well we would it in the district, making our transition to Roslindale Village very smooth.” Tricia Adams, Marla McRae & Melissa Adams, Owners Marla’s Obsession

Design & Streetscape Design & Technical Assistance Provided

The RVMS Design Committee has dedicated its expertise to shaping Roslindale Village into an attractive and vibrant cosmopolitan hub. RVMS provided 1-1 design assistance to fourteen businesses for privately funded storefront improvements, interior design and window displays. Business packets were enhanced with current resources on green business practices and provided clari ication of the Restore grant process. Also, in an effort to provide consistent marketing system graphics for commercial signs in Roslindale Village, a lease poster was designed in consultation with City of Boston-sponsored renovation of the Taft Hill Lot.

Enhancing the Streetscape

RVMS Holiday Lights on display in Adams Park and throughout the business district.

Design Committee members have also been busy on the ground-level to showcase Roslindale Village as one of Boston’s premiere pedestrianfriendly destinations. Committee member and Architect, Sam Dennis, supervised the reconstruction of the brick sidewalks around the village. Last June, Committee Chair, Darlene Donovan worked with Common Boston in conjunction with the BSA to give a walking tour to thirty participants, most of whom had never been to Roslindale. In order to keep our district looking its best during the warmer months, RVMS organized 35 volunteers for a Roslindale Village neighborhood clean-up during Boston Shines in April. Also, a partnership was built with Roslindale Green and Clean to make $4,000 in an organic lawn treatment to rejuvenate the grass in Adams Park. As a means to brighten the Village during the holiday season, RVMS installed LED holiday lights and decorations on 113 lampposts throughout the district with funds raised through A Taste of Roslindale. Yearly installations, maintenance and storage costs for holiday lights add up to about $10,000 annually. Artist George Greenamyer working on Traffic. A considerable amount of effort has gone into the ongoing initiative to build a cohesive and unique visual identity for the business district through signage and public art. In early Spring, a custom-designed sign was installed in Adams Park as a means to provide a friendly welcome to the district. Recently, RVMS received approval to begin fabrication for a public wind-driven sculpture by artist George Greenamyer at the Belgrade-Corinth intersection. Funding for the $100,000+ project is provided by generous grants from the New England Foundation for the Arts and the Browne Fund, and grassroots fundraising by the RVMS Public Art Council. The sculpture will be installed in 2012. Also slated for 2012 is an exciting proposal to the MBTA for the Robert Street Bridge Lighting Project, which includes plans to illuminate the bridge, creating a stunning gateway into the district. 4 | Roslindale Village Main Street

Marketing & Promotion Roslindale Village Main Street sponsored 30 promotional events in Roslindale Village, including the new Summer Stroll series, which collectively attracted over 60,000 visitors to the business district in 2011. The organization also published or leveraged more than 30 feature articles in local media promoting Roslindale Village, including the Boston Globe; Boston Herald; WBZ-TV; WBUR; BNN; the Roslindale/West Roxbury Transcript; Bulletin Newspapers; JP Gazette; Patch and Roslindale Shopper. Notably, Roslindale Village was featured on NECN’s TV Diner and WCVB TV’s Chronicle.

We feel as much a part of the Roslindale community as other lifelong residents, even though we've only lived here for 2 years. The events in the square really put us into the spirit of each season, especially the Holiday Wander and the Farmers’ Market. The lively atmosphere makes these events a fun- illed way to spend our time. —Bess Frost, Resident

A Taste of Roslindale

RVMS’ annual Taste of Roslindale bene it, held at St. Nectarios Church in Roslindale Village, maintained impressive momentum in its 5th year, with 21 restaurants participating and a sold-out attendance for the second year in a row. More than 85 businesses and local organizations supported the Taste through sponsorships and in-kind donations, and over 500 people attended the tasting event, which raised over $20,000 to support Roslindale Village Main Street and the Roslindale Food Pantry.

The 2011 season of the Roslindale’s Farmers’ Market was one of the most robust and vibrant neighborhood markets in the city, bringing an average of 2,200 customers to the business district weekly, peaking at a record 3,000. With eight farms and an average of 22 vendors every week, along with live music and kids’ activities, the market has become a weekly community gathering spot and word -of-mouth destination for surrounding communities. More than 75% of customers surveyed patronize other businesses in the district when they come to the Farmers’ Market. Twenty-two district businesses participated in the Farmers’ Market in 2011 as vendors, advertisers, or participants in our coupon book.

Local residents Odessa Piper, Holly St. Clair and Eric Lewandowski partnered with RVMS to produce hand-made block print recipe card series Fresh in the Village. The series linked twelve independently owned specialty food shops in Roslindale Village with the Farmers’ Market in Adam’s Park, raising over $1,500 to bene it Roslindale Village Main Street Farmers’ Market and the Charles Sumner Elementary School.

Marketing & Promotions First Class Pass to Roslindale

In conjunction with the Bay State Model Railroad Museum’s popular annual Spring Open House, RVMS partnered with 15 district businesses to create a “First Class Pass to Roslindale Village,” a train ticket with “stops” around the Village that invited the Museum’s hundreds of visitors to explore the business district. Over 500 passes were distributed by RVMS volunteers, drawing foot traf ic directly into shops and restaurants throughout the weekend.

The synergy between the community, businesses and RVMS has been the mainstay of the Main Street program, as we have experienced it. This positive energy has brought the level of activity, acceptance, and cooperation in Roslindale to even greater heights and spurred incredible excitement. - Deb & Tony DeBenedictis, Tony’s Market

Egg Hunt Our annual egg hunt drew a record crowd this year, with 1,000 kids and adults locking to Adams Park to welcome the Spring, participate in the annual Egg Toss and Bunny Hop races, and hunt for the 5,000 eggs hidden by volunteers around the park. Mayor Menino and Mr. Bunny presided over the festivities, and the Roslindale Arts Alliance hosted a crafts table. Shoppers enjoy an evening in Roslindale during the Summer Stroll in July.

Summer Stroll through Roslindale Village Twenty-two local merchants and restaurants partnered to launch the irst annual Summer Stroll: a six-week long weekly Thursday evening stroll through Roslindale Village. This event was coordinated in conjunction with the City of Boston’s Summer Concert Series in Adams Park drawing upwards of 500 people into Roslindale Village to take advantage of promotions, free activities and live music.

Small Business Saturday

As part of a national promotion to support independent small merchants during the holiday season, Roslindale Village was selected again this year by American Express and the National Trust for Historic Preservation as one of the featured “small business neighborhoods” nationwide. With support from AmEx, RVMS sponsored a district-wide Small Biz Saturday raf le, with about 75 business participants. The campaign led individual merchants to offer their own promotions, and attracted signi icant media attention to Roslindale during the holiday season. Along with Mayor Menino, SBA Administrator Karen Mills also visited Roslindale Village, participating in the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for new boutique, Minerva’s Owl. 6 | Roslindale Village Main Street

Tree Lighting

Mayor Menino, SBA Administrator Karen Mills, RVMS and President Steve Gag kick off tree lighting.

A beloved community tradition, the 27th annual tree lighting ceremony brought thousands to Adams Park to ring in the holiday season on Thanksgiving weekend. The crowds enjoyed treats donated from local bakeries; hot chocolate provided by the Lodge of Elks, who also arranged for Santa’s annual visit by iretruck; and entertainment Blackstone Valley Brass Band. Children created ornaments for the community tree at a table sponsored by the Roslindale Arts Alliance. This year’s Tree Lighting also highlighted Small Business Saturday as a district-wide event.

Holiday Window Display Contest

More than 30 businesses participated in a city-wide window display contest this year. Shoppers and community members voted to award Sebastian’s Barber Shop First Place in Overall Design, with Centre Cuts coming in Second and Trethewey Brothers a close Third. Congratulations to Colorwheel Collection winning in the category of “Best Use of Store Product” in the window display. Sebastian's Barber Shop, 1st Place Winner of Window Holiday Wander Decorating Contest. Thirty-one local merchants, restaurants and community groups collaborated with RVMS to organize the third annual Holiday Wander through Roslindale Village, a month-long weekly Thursday evening stroll featuring extended hours and special free events at shops around the Village, as well as live music, special events, and other district-wide highlights each week.

Rozzie is a trip back to how community was intended to be. Local and sustainable. What a pleasure it is to walk to the village and encounter local business owners and community members who are one in the same. Roslindale comes alive through its events, from the farmers’ market to the summer stroll. One of our favorite things to do as a family is to walk down the village and visit the various store fronts to get the best produce, meats, bread, wine, cheese and the perfect gift for that special occasion. —Nate Harris, Resident

RVMS Holiday Party

In the spirit of community and gratitude, Roslindale Village Main Street hosted a holiday party at the Emerald Society, with nearly 150 people in attendance.
